The Chiefs GM has been offered a 2-year extension, according to a report from CBS.

Earlier this week we noted that someone somewhere started a rumor that GM Scott Pioli and the Kansas City Chiefs had agreed to a contract extension. Now we hear from Jason La Canfora that the rumor may have some legs.

La Canfora reported on CBS' NFL Today pregame show:

According to my sources, he was offered a 2-year extension earlier this season by owner Clark Hunt. Nothing has been signed yet. Nothing has been agreed to. There's some issues with language in there so we'll see where that goes. But that in itself is a strong statement of loyalty from Clark Hunt at a time when the fans and the local media have been calling for the GM's ouster. Both Pioli and the Chiefs declined to comment on this report.

This is obviously in the "unofficial" stages as the Chiefs haven't commented, nor would they comment even if Pioli had already signed the extension.

The timing of this is interesting and important. We know where things stand right now with the Chiefs but earlier this season there was a lot more hope with this team, an expectation that they'd be successful. So I can see how the extension offer may have made sense earlier in the year -- before the Chiefs started 1-4.
