I simply don't understand the demands for getting rid of GM Pioli. My subjective opinion is that our roster is better than it was under CP in the 00'es. I believe that it has more potential, and I really like the youth of the team.
The Chiefs have one big problem, and that is Matt Cassel. I don't think the Chiefs will ever win a Super Bowl with him at the helm. This is Pioli's guy, that haven't worked out and consequently it is his responsibility. However its not enough reason to fire Pioli when you look at the perspective of the possibilities he had.
Lets take a look at his possibilities for fixing the QB problem
In 2009 Pioli had a roster that had huge holes everywhere on the roster. I believe some of these holes have been fixed to a bigger or lesser degree. The possibilities at QB where Huard and Brokie, which are not NFL options. Pioli where aware of the problem and acquired Matt Cassel which were a huge chance to take (only 11 something starts). However maybe this where the best decision the chiefs could make at QB. If we look at the 2009 draft and see which QB where draftet after the 3. overall pick:
#5 Mark Sanchez, #17 Josh Freeman, #44 Pat White
Mark Sanchez (QB rating: 2009:73 ; 2010:75,3 ; 2011:78,2) has been under endless scrutiny and I believe the Jets has had success in spite of him and not because of him. They are build around a good defense and a excellent running game.
Josh Freeman (QB rating: 2009:59,8 ; 2010:95,9 ; 2011;74,6) had a break out year in 2010, but is still waiting to take the next step, based on a disappointing 2011. He has a similar QB rating to Matt Cassel (2009:69,9 ; 2010:93 ; 2011:76,6) in the period
Sure QB rating doesn't show the complete picture of QB play, however Matt Cassel seems to be equal to these players.
Could it be Pioli had seen there where a need and this was the best way to fix it? He took a flier on Matt and it didn't pan out. But did he had other possibilities to fix the problem?
These are the QB's chiefs had a chance to draft.
2010: Tim Tebow, Jimmy Clausen, Colt McCoy
2011: Andy Dalton, Colin Kaepernick, TJ Yates
2012: Brandon Weeden
While the jury is still out on Colin Kaepernick, TJ and Brandon Weeden, Andy Dalton (QB rating 2011:80,4) seems to be the only miss by Pioli to fix the QB problem in the draft. And this is not even a overwhelming miss.
When looking at FA's, really the only QB that has made it into the lineup is Manning and the Broncos gave him half the salary cap.
My point is:
I think Pioli have made good decisions that has helped this roster getting better during difficult circumstances. Sure it could have been better and i am not saying he didn't make any mistakes. But i think the Chiefs fans forget to put his decisions into perspective.
Therefore keep Pioli and give him a real chance to fix the QB problem! And I do think Cassel is the problem.
