Chiefs Hire Romeo Crennel Approval Poll
Now that the Kansas City Chiefs have officially announced that Romeo Crennel will be the next head coach, it's time to run our approval poll.
The Chiefs fired Todd Haley in December and Crennel took the Chiefs to a 2-1 record beating two playoff teams down the stretch (Green Bay Packers and Denver Broncos). Crennel's only loss came in overtime to the Oakland Raiders.
The Chiefs defense ranked 29th in points allowed in the two seasons prior to Crennel coming to KC as the defensive coordinator in 2010 and they've ranked 11th and 12th, respectively, in the last two seasons.
Multiple players and coaches have supported the move to hire Crennel full time. The players, in particular, seemed to rally around him in the final three games.
So, with that said, do you approve of the move to hire Romeo Crennel as the new head coach? Let us know in the poll.

You know, guys who’ve been out of football for a while but would somehow make us Superbowl bound in a year. This is a good hire.

Only because Vince Lombardi is not still alive
nor is Bill Walsh for OC, and Buddy Ryan probably isn’t up for DC duties anymore. Romeo will never live up to that.
Because you think Romeo
Like Norv Turner & Wade Phillips, is a great as a coordinator, but not really a HC. That’s where I am. I hope I’m wrong, but we’ll see.

I think it's sexy.
He was the only HC to lead a team to victory against the 15-1 defending champs.
Had the Chief not named him HC I almost guarantee another team would have come looking for him.

I think it will be more like
Romeo distracts Pioli while the new OC dumps Cassel off blindfolded in Canada. Then, they keep Orton, draft a QB, or get Manning.

i'm excited about it.
cant wait to c what chiefs do in the off season.
Predictions:
Chiefs will have a top 5 pass defense next season!!!
Tamba will lead the league in sacks.
Jamal Charles will lead the league in Rushing yards and YPC (again)
This is why I voted No to the Romeo hire
He’s just going to be a puppet for Pioli – we keep Cassel and the mediocre QB play continues. I would even go so far as to wonder out loud if Romeo will be allowed to hire his offensive staff – or if he will have to hire Pioli’s picks for those jobs.
What do you mean by puppet?
Chiefs D held Raiders, Bears, Packers and Broncos to their lowest point outputs of the season. #RAC
In essence to just be a yes man for Pioli
Hire Piolis choices for coaches. Keep Cassel and not allow a true QB competition. Not press for free agents, not push for offensive weapons he believes in.
Personnel is Pioli's job.
You are calling Romeo a puppet for not doing a job that isn’t actually his.

I approve the hire but...
some consistency throughout the org. would be nice. I would’ve given Haley at least one more year.
Philosophically, I agree with you.
But, I have nightmares of Haley sticking with the wrong players week after week. Palko will not be in the NFL next year. Yet, if Haley was coach, Palko would have been one Cassel injury away from leading our team again…for weeks and weeks. The man is THAT stubborn.

I thought haley deserved another year until the Palko nightmare. He had the chance to save his job and chose his way instead of actually giving our team a chance to win games.

Stay tuned for Gunther Cunningham Part 2.
You all probably loved the Gunther hire also. Chiefs are going no where with this move. It’s an offensive league, and the Chiefs hire on defensive minded coach.
I think RAC finds a good OC to handle the offense
something Gunther didn’t do, he just wanted to do the ground and pound offense.

by ArrowheadHunter on Jan 9, 2012 12:12 PM CST up reply actions
Gunther is a special kind of crazy though.
A lot of defensive minded coaches have done well in the league. Belichick, Coughlin, Ryan, Lovie Smith and others. Haley was an offensive minded coach and he turned out to be just offensive. It is an offense driven league but that doesn’t mean a defensive minded coach can’t do well.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
I really hope
that Romeo keeps it simple on the offensive side—just go get the best damn QB you can! Then, with all of our weapons, a good OC will be able to push the right buttons and generate points. The two most important moves this off season will be OC and QB. Moreso than this Romeo hire, those two spots will determine whether we move forward or just keep spinning our wheels.
I believe in the Chiefs' Way. Someday, we will set the standard for how to be a championship team!

I think a good chunk of the staff will stay the same.
Seems like the OC will be Zorn and DC will be Gibbs or Thomas. Then pick up lower level coaches.
I would be ok with Zorn. Don’t know a ton about Gibbs and Thomas though.
I think I am more worried about our O-Line and QB than anything else.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
It's an offensive league, and the Chiefs hire a defensive coach...
Yeah, that doesn’t make sense. Why would you try to stop all those high powered O’s?
Different animals by a long shot
Crennel has already had HC experience and can learn from his mistakes in Cleveland. There’s really no comparison to Gunther here other than they were both promoted from DC.
I’d say with all the high scoring offenses in the league now it’s pretty damn important to have a strong defense. How did we beat GB? How did we take care of the donkeys with a pathetic offense while the Steelers couldn’t take care of business.
Yes, we need some offense, but defense is every bit as important and 2003 proved that without a shadow of a doubt.

…now get the man a QB please, otherwise I’m afraid it could be just like his previous stint with Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn.
I'll hold my tongue for now
I’m still waiting on QB
I approve...
It keeps an element of consistency amongst the team. Had we hired someone else we probably lose RAC. By doing this I think it gives us a greater chance of bringing back Carr and bring in basically an ‘Offensive Head Coach’ to be the OC.
My only concern is his age
Means we will be getting a new coach again within 4-5 years which will put him around 70. I think he will do well and was a good choice otherwise. I also can’t think of another candidate that I wanted.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
If he's good enough to last 5 years.
I’ll take that. How many coaches stay longer than that anyway?

Your right this is an offensive league
But it doesn’t mean a defensive mind can’t win. Like everyone is saying OC is the most important hire right now. Who will take over that will shape how things go simply because the D had it’s moments for the most part it wasn’t the problem the Offense and occasional special teams (Return game) was.
And Yes
I know Arenas finished 3rd in punt return avg. That’s all good and dandy, but we still didn’t do anything with the ball, and had fumbles, muffs, punt ran back for a touchdown and other issues.
I'm curious as to how many
player’s coaches have won a Super Bowl? After all that is the goal. It’s not that I disagree with the hire but we still need to keep our eye on the ball and not get emotional.

Marty and Haley had a conservative philosophy.
It is more about what our philosophy is going to be on offense. The elite teams are creative with their play calling. Mike Martz got conservative with his play calling with the Bears because of their philosophy.
I’m not saying I want Mike Martz. I want a balanced offense that can run and pass.I hope Romeo is not a conservative coach on offense.
so we’ll run on first
throw on 2nd and 10
and run on 3rd and 10
sounds like our current offense
or do we run run run or throw throw throw or the old fashion run run throw?
or do we completely ignore punting?
I want Vermeil's offense.
We had a great running game and a great passing game, that was fun to watch. The Saints offense can run and pass too.

the real question is for how long has RC known? What was all the interviewing about, Pioli? Want to make your coach think he’s the 4-5 option? Or, has he known since October, and the rest was for show? maybe RAC was ok with a new HC, but Pioli required the new coach to retain RAC, and it didn’t pan out.

Don’t get me wrong I like Romeo – but I am afraid this is nothing more than a move to keep the status quo – Cassel (mediocre play) at QB – and I just can’t myself to approve of that.
Don't know how you equate Romeo to keeping Cassel as the starter.

If Romeo has players to evaluate at quarterback,
I think he will go with the guy who can win. Of course, if Pioli only gives Romeo Cassel, Stanzi, and perhaps a draft quarterback, the decision is nearly being made for Romeo.

He definitely did hire a coach who won't get an official say in personnel.
But I think that’s a separate issue. Cassel is probably a third separate issue. What do you think of Romeo the coach?

I very much like Romeo the coach
I just fear he won’t have the personality to tell Pioli no and thats what I want to see in a head coach. Someone who will have convictions and stick to them.
Well, we'll probably never know for sure if he does or doesn't.

who said anything about Haley?
Whats that called? A straw man argument?
just pointing out that "sticking to your convictions" doesn't always work.
we saw that first hand this season.

that may be
but I’d rather have that then a coach who sits by the phone waiting to be told what to do.
You'd rather the GM do what the coach tells him?

No
I would rather have a coach and GM that are about winning – not about keeping Clark happy with ticket sales.
You obviously have an issue with my position Brskr – how about telling me what you think instead of just deflecting my statements with questions?
Nothing sells tickets better than winning.
I see nothing wrong with wanting to sell tickets.

I think Romeo is a damn fine coach, and that he'll do well at that - coaching.
I think personnel is Pioli’s job, and I think he’s done a fair job so far and hope that he continues to learn and improve.
I think that speculating about the thoughts and personal agendas of people we don’t know and have probably never even met is a lot of fun. But that kind of speculation can have absolutely NO basis in fact, so it’s not worth getting worried over.
I don’t have any personal grudge with you, sorry if it sounds that way. I just see way too many people here talking like their own pure speculation, or the speculation of charismatic talking heads, is indeed fact. I mean, how can you make a value judgment like “he’s stubborn” on somebody you’ve never even met?

Fair enough
I have said that I hope to be wrong – and I do.
This team just doesn’t seem to have the same “soul” that it had under Lamar.
Yeah, I don't think any team does.

same "soul" that hasn't been to a super bowl in 40 years
or won a playoff game in nearly 20. hopefully a new “soul” is in place.

My fears exactly.
Pioli will NOT give up on Cassel and RAC will not put up a fight. Remember, Herm was a players coach too.
Huge Dino Hackett fan.
do you really think Pioli made the most important decision of his career by giving the job to a guy who takes it too easy on the players?
i don’t.

He may not take it easy on them
But he will not go against his GM’s wishes. Pioli has full control and will get no resistance.

so if they're on the same page
he’s a “yes man”? Please.

...and this necessarily is a bad thing?
Don’t you want your GM and coach to get along for the most part? I think too many people are assuming Pioli is somehow permanently bound to Cassel no matter what for some reason. The guy is not blind nor an idiot. If he is, then he shouldn’t be running this franchise any longer.
After seeing Orton at least move the ball,
go through his progressions, plus throw the ball downfield, I don’t want to see any more of Cassel at all. We would be better served by Orton than Cassel.

Why? Because Keitzman told you so?

Until I see otherwise, I’m thinking Orton is not offered a contract.

a hotheaded OC that never played a down of football in his life rode the coattails of HOF caliber players to success.
that would be status quo.

When I think of RAC as a head coach
I think of two others:
1. Herm
2. Wade Philips
I hope I’m wrong, but I see him as a big teddy bear type who will do whatever Pioli says. It’s great to be liked by your players, but you don’t always win that way.
Huge Dino Hackett fan.
...don't always lose that way either.
Dick Vermeil, Tony Dungy were player coaches who won.
According to Sporting News, Rex Ryan and Mike Tomlin were voted by players as coaches they’d most like to play for. I’d say both of them have had some success.
"Both Tomlin and Ryan have often been regarded as a player's type coach as both relate tremendously to their players."

Herm and Wade didn't get respect from their players

Truth be told.
It really depends. I think if Pioli had a plan, this could be it. Get an asshole (Haley) disciplinary type hot head to come in and kick start the rebuilding, while he finds the right 53 (right football attitude, unselfish) type of players to gel and find leaders in the lockerroom. Now, with that in place, the core group of young leaders can lead by example – thus with a players coach or the coach that players like playing for, it might just do the magic to get this franchise over the hump.
Todd Haley - Crennel just prove to the world that you're a f***ing Joke! Matt Cassel - Orton showed with 3 weeks of practice you can beat the world champions. #7 your legacy is...you don't have one, you're a backup all along. Should never have been a starter in the NFL.

I think RAC has an opportunity to do that
with his coordinators. At least with the OC. Get some asshole type to scare the crap out of the players, then RAC can play the father figure. Pretty standard coaching setup, Haley was doing some of that with Carthon.

I really hope this is it
We may never know. But there’s a chance something happen in the midst of Haley’s firing that prompted Pioli to realized the team is finally ready to take the Next Big Step. The core group – lockerroom leaders stood up led by example – also wasn’t a bad idea that a guy Pioli knows how to work with in Crennel got the core group of players to step it up during adversed times.
Let’s see who they’ll name OC and DC.

Let me clarify
I love Romeo as a coach – I think he gets players to play up to and at times above their skill level. The players obviously think highly of him and want to play hard for him – all very good things that I want to see in a head coach.
My issue is with the Chiefs as an organization in whole – I don’t see the “damn the costs” attitude in getting to the top. I don’t see the drive to do whatever it takes to be a winner. So for me the hiring of Romeo is raising the white flag and saying – we are keeping everything the same – we think we are good enough with what is here to compete in the top of the NFL. I do not agree.
The "damn the cost" attitude don't always work
see Redskins, Eagles, and Cowboys

It NEVER works if there's a salary cap.
And there is in the NFL, thank goodness.
When you gotta go in the lion's den, you don't go quiet. You go in loud, kick the door down and say WHERE IS THE SONUVABITCH. -B. Billick
you're overthinking it
I’m not talking about a Yankees attitude that spending fixes everything. I’m taking about spending when it’s needed and not a attitude that everything can be fixed with draft picks or street free agents.
I agree that just throwing money at it is’t the way to handle a roster in the NFL.
I’ll save some of my judgment for the off season. Let’s see if Carr and Bowe get resigned. If a legit NT is found. If back up safety and RB personnel are added. If we upgrade at ILB (Belcher) or if we stay millions below the cap and don’t actually try to improve with some FA’s.
With that being said this team is RIPE or spending this year. Any unused cap space moves forward into the Chiefs overall cap number for 2012. That means we have 20-30 million MORE we can spend the 90% of the NFL this season. I’d ;like to see the Chiefs leverage that position and make moves that make sense for this team going forward.
Sometimes it doesn't work
Ask Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder

I think Romeo is a good hire but.....
I find it very troubling that Fischer was not interested because he didn’t believe ownership was committed to winning. I don’t believe Pioli anymore when he says Hunt will let him spend what he wants.
You don't know that
Perhaps Pioli had a vision and a way of how a team should be build and for that reason alone, Fisher and Pioli have a very different philosophy in making a championship caliber team.

If they are committed to winning
they wouldn’t have hired someone who only did so only 6 times in 16+ years anyway.
