Chiefs Make It Official: Romeo Crennel Is The New Head Coach
The Kansas City Chiefs have officially confirmed that Romeo Crennel will be introduced as the new head coach at a 1:00 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) press conference this afternoon. The Chiefs official release on Crennel's hire includes quotes from owner Clark Hunt, GM Scott Pioli and Crennel himself.
Hunt: "We are very excited to name Romeo the new head coach of the Chiefs," Hunt said. "In 30 years as a coach in the National Football League, Romeo has established an outstanding track record of success, and we believe his experience and proven ability make him the best person to help us reach our goal of consistently competing for championships."
Pioli: "Romeo's vast experience and intelligence have helped him achieve success at the highest level. The way in which he creates accountability and respect amongst the team creates a very productive work environment and will be critical in continuing to develop our young core of players," Pioli said. "In addition, Romeo's extensive knowledge of our players, personnel, and needs make him a perfect fit to lead the Kansas City Chiefs."
Crennel: "I have a deep appreciation for the vision that Clark Hunt has and his commitment to building a championship-caliber team," Crennel said. "I believe in the types of players that we are trying to win with and the identity we are trying to create. It is a rare opportunity to be a part of an organization like the Kansas City Chiefs with its storied history and passionate fans and I am eager to get to work and bring this franchise and our fans the success they deserve."

Alright Romeo, let's get the assistant coaches in place so we can have a full productive off season for a change.

Right after, good, glad its Romeo.

So we need the Press Conference...why?
My earliest Chiefs memories are watching guys named Dawson, Podolak, Taylor, Thomas, Bell, and Buchanan. So, yeah...I'm kind of an old fart.
Passionate fans - were downright nuts
Ok – time to get an OC/DC, sign the players, and get us a QB that can throw the &%‘in football! Sad that Tebow has done halfway decent and we’re stuck with Plinko for 4 games.
Uhhh...I hate looking at the 1983 Draft and seeing 2 HOF'ers picked after our washed up QB pick.
Now get this mother fucker
some fools to contend with. #82 & #39 – make it happen!

Think RAC becoming head coach makes it more likely that we sign Bowe and Carr?
I think Carr comes back because of this.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
I think acquiring & keeping high caliber players just became a lot less difficult for one Scott Pioli.
D-Bowe says: "THAT'S MY BIKE, PUNK!!!!"
Never worried about Carr
Can’t say the same for Bowe. We got Baldwin on the back-burner, we’re sitting at #11with Michael Floyd & Alshon Jeffrey likely still on the board. Scott has leverage, notsomuch with Carr

by KansasCityShuffle on Jan 9, 2012 10:35 AM CST up reply actions
Yeah, Carr I wasn't as worried about unless a whole new staff came in
With his DC becoming HC though i think he sticks around.
I would prefer to keep Bowe over drafting a WR though. Bowe is solid when he has his head on straight. He is a legitimate #1 WR. I would prefer to keep him and draft an OL with that first pick. With Bowe, Baldwin, Breaston, Charles and Moeaki that is a nice set of weapons for any offense. Now fix that line and I think we can have something special. The Defense has a good chance to be top 5-10 next year. With a solid O-Line I think we can have a really good offense too.
Cassel may still be a weak link but who knows, the guy could wing it in NE but has never been able to here. I’d still rather have Orton or even Stanzi at this point.
If we have a solid draft, retain Carr and Bowe, and bring in a couple free agents I think this team can do really good things next year.

Preaching to the Choir
I’d be perfectly content if the only off-season signing’s we made were Bowe, Carr, and Orton. No doubt in my mind who would win in a QB competition between #7 & #8

I agree with the O-Line pick in the first
but I can’t say I would mind a ton if they decided to take Richardson in round 1 (assuming he’s available) and then took the top RT prospect available in the 2nd.

If Richardson is available then I wouldn't mind that
Richardson and Charles in the backfield would be nice. You can find a starting RT in the 2nd and another guard in the 3rd, maybe even sign another from FA. If they can get one of the top OL in FA I would be happy. Hudson can take center, Asamoah at guard, Albert at LT, then priority is to replace RT and Lilja if a good option is out there.

+1
I like Richardson to, unless RG3 is there..

I love it
All we need now is to hire a proven Offensive Coordinator and promote within a Defensive Coordinator. I hear all the talk about Gibbs, but i wouldn’t mind to see Emmitt Thomas as the DC. Any thoughts?
In Pioli We Trust
Not sure I know enough about either one.
Both were coordinators before right? I didn’t think Gibbs did well though with New Orleans? I don’t know though.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
Emmitt Thomas
He was a head coach for three weeks in ATL after the resignation of Bobby Petrino. He was 1-2 in his three games, he was then retain as an assistant head coach. I think he has what it takes, just look at what he did this year for our secondary over the past few seasons.

RAC: "I believe in the types of players that we are trying to win with"
This quote scares me as it leaves me to believe that the organization has made it clear to him that Cassel is going to remain as our starting QB.
by Detroit Buckets on Jan 9, 2012 10:44 AM CST reply actions
Don't read too much into that.
He said “types” not individual players. This is more about the philosophy of drafting and signing strong leaders.

exactly
i think we need a real LEADER on the field too…
Clark Hunt and Scott Pioli need to IMPRESS me in 2012....No Settling this year Chiefs Fans!!
I think that's set on the defensive side with Berry, DJ & Hali
On offense, not so much.
Predictions:
I'm going to stop predicting positive things
Cassel can be a good leader
Everyone seems to like him, he’s just not a playmaker.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
I think Cassel followes the cues in acting like a good leader
and doing the things a leader is supposed to do, but I don’t think those things are genuinely him…and other players can see through that.
Look at players like Peyton & Brady and how they each command the offense. I don’t see that in Cassel. But of course it’s hard to get on other players for mistakes when you yourself are responsible for so many of them.
Predictions:
I'm going to stop predicting positive things
That's just it...
you can do all the things that a leader is “supposed” to do on paper. But, if you can’t execute on the field, you don’t gain your teammates’ respect. Then, if the HC/GM sticks with that underperforming QB, the rest of the team loses heart.
I believe in the Chiefs' Way. Someday, we will set the standard for how to be a championship team!

Cassel doesn't seem to have confidence in himself...
And you can’t inspire confidence in others if you don’t have confidence in yourself.

That “leadership” probably cost KC more yardage than he contributed.

He gave credit to Hunt,
But failed to mention Pioli.
Never argue with an Idiot...... they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
sometimes I wonder how they would do that chalk outline, if you pushed someone into a tree chipper.
Ooooo... already a conspiracy theory!

at least he is "saying" things i like to hear
he said this same thing when he fired Haley

Nice
As long as we replace cassel with a better qb we should be competing . I read a very interesting article about how the only poor lineman score for the year on pass block was with Richardson . We have a pretty solid line outside him , “says the scores” . Problem was with run blocking . I think alot has to do with slow man jones and battle tho . Hopefully if we get two or so lineman we should be solid . Let’s go chiefs ! .
by chiefsman! on Jan 9, 2012 10:59 AM CST via mobile reply actions
I agree
I think we will be drafting an O-linemen in the first round of the draft, unless by some miracle we can steal RGIII, but most likely a tackle is coming our way. If we can then make a move in FA and go after Carl Nicks, we would be back to having one of, if not the best line in the league.
In Pioli We Trust
Ok choice
OC and DC are critical. Gibbs, just say no. Emmitt better choice. OC, suggestions?
The most important thing you can do in life is help other people.
I'm 100% with you
Emmitt Thomas deserves a shot at the DC position, he has done wonders with our secondary. Even with Eric Berry going down this year he got outstanding production out of Jon McGraw. Even Kendrick Lewis played great in his second year.
In Pioli We Trust
That's one way of looking at it.
Another way is that we cannot afford to lose a valuable secondary coach. IOW, maybe it’s better to keep him where he’s doing the most good.
Chiefs D held Raiders, Bears, Packers and Broncos to their lowest point outputs of the season. #RAC
A Valid Point
But why not let him try to get that production out of the entire Defense rather than just one group? I agree it’s a risk to move him, but i think to be a championship caliber team you can’t be afraid to make questionable moves.
In Pioli We Trust
I'm fine with either him or Gibbs.
As long as we hire within, with Romeo still overseeing everything, the defense should continue on the same path.
Chiefs D held Raiders, Bears, Packers and Broncos to their lowest point outputs of the season. #RAC
Yep
Thats pretty much where i stand as well. Just want it to be one of the two, personally leaning towards Thomas, but like you said it just needs to be someone from within.
In Pioli We Trust
i like rac
im praying for a legit oc…and also we resign bowe and carr i dono but im worried about losing them like im nervous for a job interview or something for the love of God pioli dont f*ck this up!

Excited but . . .
Not to be a Buzz Kill, but I expect someone within the organization to explain those incredibly ugly BLOW OUT losses this year? Our D gave up huge points on Romeo’s watch: Buffalo 41, Detroit 48, Miami 31, NY 37, NE 34? I know some are associated with turnovers from our offense (which obviously has issues), but none the less- this needs addressed.
They explained that
when they fired Haley.
It is time to anoint the Stanzi. He is The One.

Though Romeo was DC
Haley was still HC, and if they didn’t feel like playing for him they didn’t.

These guys are professionals
I’m not buying that they chose to “not play” because Haley was their HC and obviously a jerk. Haley was terminated for insubordination with Pioli, for sticking with Palko and for taking ownership of the ill prepared team that was blown out by the Jets.
If Haley’s micromanagement of the defense under Crennel was the cause of those blowouts, we likely will never know.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Romeo. I liked their performances (offense aside) once he took over. The players obviously like RAC as well. But the players also loved Frank Ganz and Gunther too and we all know how those ended.
I'm not saying it was all Haley
I’m just saying whether they didn’t like him or he was meddling or what, it had to have some effect on them. Not saying it was all him, but it had to have been part.

Chiefs have a god young team!
…But we are missing the most important position….QB. Until we find a legit QB, we are going nowhere. We won’t get a top line QB in the draft (unless he is a project), so go get an OT and OG and try to upgrade the QB position in free agency until we can land our franchise QB. I really hope Pioli understands that Cassell will make a great backup…not a franchise QB
Right.
Because he’s won it almost every year in Indy.
