Who Our New Coordinators Should Be
I hope the Chiefs make it official and retain Crennel as our HC. I think he will do well as our HC, but he is going to need help. He is going to need a really good OC to fix the god awful mess that is our QB situation and get the offense rolling. Also, he will need someone to be the DC to delegate duties so he can focus more on HC duties, but he could still call the plays on game day. After the jump I want to highlight two guys who I think would be perfect fits for what we need.
This is Mel Tucker, who as many of you probably already know is the interim HC of the Jags right now. I don't think he gets the full time gig in Jacksonville. They have to bring in someone to fix Gabbert and he didn't exactly lead the Jags to any great victories. Plus, they are having trouble selling tickets in that town, and they have to make a bigger splash. Not to mention a change in ownership in the last week. Anyway, he has been a DC in the NFL for the last 4 seasons, 3 with the Jags and in 2008 he was the DC under Crennel in Cleveland. That defense in Cleveland finished 5th and the Jags have been in the top 10 the last 3 seasons. However, he didn't call the plays in Jacksonville, Del Rio did, until this last season. Jacksonville finished 6th in defense. He is more fiery coach, which would help compliment Crennel's more mild approach. One other note is that he is young at only 40 years old, might make a good successor one day to Crennel, who knows.
This is Tom Clements as many at AP probably already know. He was a CFL star and actually was a backup QB in KC in the 1980 season, the only NFL team he ever played for. Right now he is the QB coach of the Packers, the job he has had since 2006. His resume his pretty impressive. He has coached 5 pro bowl QBs including Elvis Grbac (2000), Stewart (2001), Maddox (2002), and of course Favre and Rodgers. One of the two things that jump off the page for me is that he coached what we would consider less than elite talent, with Grbac and Maddox especially, and help them put up pro bowl numbers. The other thing is that he was instrumental in the development of Aaron Rodgers. I caught Rodgers on Rome last week and he credited a lot of his success to Clements. I think he is what the doctor ordered for fixing our QB situation. With the prominent thought now that Manning will stay in Indy, as well as Luck being drafted one overall, the only real two solutions I see are a trade up for Griffen or to get Flynn in free agency. Maybe Flynn is another Cassel, but when it comes to the QB position, beggars can't be choosers. The fact of the matter is Flynn may flop, but he could excel and we have to take that chance.
However, that only covers half of his job as he would also have to game plan and call plays. This may be where the magic wears off. He was an OC with the Buffalo Bills for the 2004 to 2005 seasons. His offenses finished 25th in 2004 (although they were ranked 7th when you measure it by points) and 2005 they finished 28th. Definitely not good, but hopefully he learned a few things being under McCarthy in Greenbay. Hopefully, he does his first job in fixing the QB situation and everything else will follow suit as his QB situation in Buffalo was less than optimal, especially in 2005 where he had JP Losmann and Kelly Holcomb. I think he will have the talent here he needs to succeed. Oh, and I'm sure this goes without saying, but Zorn and Muir will have to be fired. Clements would be the OC and QB coach so that pushes Zorn out and Muir probably won't take a demotion, especially at this point in his career. I think he will retire anyway. Just my two cents, I think Tucker is very probable, but I have no idea what is going to happen at OC.

Not a bad choice in Mel Tucker..
Because Romeo is up there in age and grooming our future head coach for a couple years under Romeo might be a smart move at that??

I approve of both of these guys...rec'd
Clements has been my favorite for OC, and there were rumblings about it a couple weeks ago. I am sure Clements doesn’t want to make any decisions until after the playoffs. I just don’t think Zorn has done anything to deserve a promotion. Cassel regressed and I don’t trust him to develop a guy like Stanzi.
Rodgers was raw coming into the league and unimpressive early on. Matt Flynn was nothing special coming out of school either. Clements has done wonders for both of these guys. I don’t care if he doesn’t have experience calling plays, because priority #1 is “fixing the QB” and developing Stanzi. And he surely can’t be any worse than Muir about playcalling. Zorn and Carthon can also help him with gameplanning and playcalling if needed, as both have experience in that category.
We will also need a new OL coach to replace Muir. Not sure who that should be yet, but preferably someone with experience and success in the ZBS — maybe someone from the Kubiak coaching tree as mentioned in a previous thread.
I really like Tucker as well and the Jags have been successful developing D-Linemen as well. They are quietly one of the top defenses in the league and Tucker has a good track record developing young players. Unfortunately, it looks like Gibbs will get a promotion, which means no Tucker. I do think a Gibbs promotion is well-deserved, however. We could possibly look at a guy like Greg Manusky as LBs coach, which would give us a really solid defensive staff. He has experience in the 34 and would be an instant fan favorite.
Should be exciting to see how things play out. I had my hopes up last year and was pissed when we promoted Muir, so I am trying to stay reserved throughout the process this time.
Nicknames I have coined:
Jamaal Charles = 'Haley's Comet'
Shaun Smith = 'Big Nasty'
Kelly Gregg = 'Old Gregg'
Manusky was far from a fan favorite in SD.
They hated him!

Other guys
Brian Daboll-OC
Mike Martz-OC
Dirk Koetter-OC
Greg Olson-OC
Not sure about any of these guys.
I hope Crennel and Pioli can snag a good one.
How long should you try? Until.

I’ve no tuck with Tucker, if he’s what you say his is, fine. However, I’d be OK with Clements as QB coach, but I’d prefer Zorn as OC. He’s conversant in the current offense, and has been an OC in Seattle, so he could come up with a blend of the Pats offense & what he ran in Seattle, and he has also been a HC, so we could have two potential HC’s on the staff.
That was Haleys' Offense
We have no reason to stick with it now.
I would prefer to follow Bellichicks plan and go two TE and with our running game and WR’s we have everything cept Tom Brady to be a Better O than Theirs
The Pioli Plan ...

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
True.
We should also consider minimising the quarterbacks affect on this offense until we really have a QB.

I agree with you...
Promote Zorn to OC, then bring Clements in as the QB coach. After Romeo retires we can continue to promote from within. That way we don’t have to blow everything up again.
I highly doubt that Tucker ends up in Kansas City. Most likely its going to be Gibbs… and we will need a LB coach.
Go Chiefs!!!!
if picking at #11/12 where ever we are, I like ILB vontaze burfict from ASU.
The guy is a stud and would make our LB core unreal, not a big fan of any of the OT’s outside of the guy from USC, dont see RG3 or Luck falling there, Dont see blackmon falling there, dont see CB clairborn falling there, not a fan of taking RB richardson in round 1 having jamal, the gaurd from stanford scares me cause they use so many O-lineman and got so many good ones might be the ryan simms effect where he had julius peppers playing next to him and somehow ended up making people think he was better than he was? Dont see any stud NT with that pick, the CB from bama scares me cause they got 2 other guys in the secondary ranked really high also takes me back to ryan simms effect, give me a stud like vontaze who brings some nasty to our D and im happy. I call it the pioli type pick, BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE.

every raiders fan you hear hates rolando mcclain?
they say he is to slow, bla bla bla, but they all say he stuffs the run, here is a thought. Notice how raiders picked up curry from seatle? Kind of strange seatle just let him go so cheap? Think Oakland would do that with Rolando for maybe a 3rd round pick? They need picks and odds are a new GM will want him some picks to work with, personally I think he would be great in KC. He doesnt fit the scheme in oakland more suited for the 3-4 ILB, he could take jovans spot and be the run stuffer at ILB while DJ just makes the plays and drops in coverage in which he is great at. Any chance of something like that happening?

I say...
Trade Dorsey for more picks. He has made strides, but doesn’t fit our 3-4. Then with our first round pick take Quinton Coples out of NC. Dude is 6’6 with long lean arms. He reminds me alot of Julious Peppers

I love it
The idea of Tucker get’s me pumped. Gibbs may deserve a promotion, but Tucker obviously has a good track record and has Coached affectively under Crennel before. I think it’s a great idea to bring him in if possible and “groom” him. Sounds GREAT
like a Chris Thorman GQ makeover?

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Watch this Oakland thing
Al Saunders is sitting in Oakland and not doing anything. id LOVE to have him back in KC. Mike Martz runs a similar style offense. But both require a more reliable and consistent QB than we currently have on our roster.
I do like the Tucker pick as well.

Pete Carmichael
He has been the OC in New Orleans for 3 seasons and was their QB coach for 3 seasons before that. Sean Payton has been the playcaller prior to his injury this season, and New Orleans offense didn’t skip a beat once Carmichael took over the playcalling duties. Maybe, he would be interested in coming to KC and having the offense be his alone.
I like the idea of Tucker for DC, too.

As much as I like Clemets its just not likely going to happen as long as Cassel is in town.
I can’t see Pioli and Crennel giving Cassel yet another QB coach especially if Zorn has made any progress with him. So as long as Zorn is in town or unless Clements and Zorn can coexist I don’t see it happening.
