Report: Romeo Crennel To Be Chiefs Head Coach
It appears we may have a decision on the Kansas City Chiefs head coach. At least according to ESPN. Adam Schefter is reporting that the Chiefs plan to retain Romeo Crennel as the head coach and remove the interim tag title.
Some reports are saying the move could be made official early next week. We shall see.
This is the direction many of us thought the Chiefs would go. Some members of the coaching staff have publicly backed Crennel. Many of the players have as well. Crennel went 2-1 down the stretch and the team seemed to rally around him. I can see how this makes sense.
Crennel has previous experience as a head coach when he spend four seasons as the Cleveland Browns head coach going 24-40 in that span.
Crennel now enters the 2012 season without a defensive coordinator -- that's the position he held before getting the interim tag -- and potentially an opening at offensive coordinator depending on what Bill Muir's future is.
Early thoughts on the move?

Any chance Philbin is hired as Assistant Head Coach/OC?
Perhaps Pioli can entice him to join the staff, where he can actually call the plays. And since RAC is unlikely to coach for an extended period of time, Philbin would then be the Head Coach in waiting.
Why would Philbin leave Green Bay for anything less than a Head Coaching gig?
Im not even sure you are allowed to talk to a team for a coach for a lateral move without the teams permission, and I doubt Green Bay would give said permission.

He would add
full gameplanning and playcalling. Right now he is just part of a whole… I agree that he wont leave GB for anything else but a HC job but there would be positives for him to get out of GB as far as actually getting a HC job over just being an interview.
What a year! At least we have the Royals... Oh Wait!
he doesn't even do the playcalling now ar GB
and if GB continues to roll, wouldn’t be available for over a month …

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
That was my point
If he did go somewhere else as an OC he would get his first shot at full gameplanning and playcalling. Right now he does the same thing as Carmichael and many other OC in the NFL with a HC that calls the plays.
What a year! At least we have the Royals... Oh Wait!
SO he can call plays on offense?
And get closer to his head coaching gig..
Because here hes has an opportunity to be HC within a couple of years.

Just mean he has a better chance of becoming one here then in GB if nothing else materializes elsewhere.

I don't agree with that at all...
He will likely have more opportunities next year if he stays in Green Bay… As long as they have Aaron Rodgers their coaching staff will continue to get more credit than they deserve.

Im not a big Philbin fan anyway.
Clements and McCarthy are the brain trust over there. Much rather see Clements come here because it’s at least a promotion for him.

That could happen too.
Talk about your plenty, talk about your ills/

Doubt he would leave too
However, in Kansas City he could run his own offense. At Green Bay he is only offensive coordinator by name, the true brains behind the Packers’ offense is Mike McCarthy.
Matt Cassel gives San Diego a win; Philip Rivers gives Kansas City a win.
An interesting possibility. Matt Flynn isn't going to get much playing time in GB, so I'd sure
like to see the Chief’s take a close look at him. Philbin and Flynn might be a great combination.
Haley and Leinhart might be a great combination ...
oh wait … never mind :-)

I think we have the DC on the staff
My vote is for Emmitt Thomas to be the DC he has been assistant head couch in Atlanta for 5 years and was the interim head couch. We go out and get an OC and let him be assistant head couch. I like the Packers OC for that spot. This way we will keep everyone on the D-staff and just have to add a couch or two. I think about half of the O-staff will be new people.
I'm down for some new couches.

I'm good with promoting from within for the DC.
Gibbs or Thomas. Keeps consistency on that side of the ball. And we all know Romeo is still going to have a huge influence there anyway.
Why Mel Tucker?
Guy has worked under him at Cleveland and now has head coaching experience.
Matt Cassel gives San Diego a win; Philip Rivers gives Kansas City a win.

was the best option for us give the candidates. now to find good OC/DC one of which could assume HC role later down the road after Crennel retires.

Would you be down for Philbin being named OC/Assistant HC and bring Flynn with him?
by photo700 on Jan 7, 2012 10:53 AM CST reply actions 1 recs
Yes but no Flynn...
Flynn had one good game, and the Chiefs have seen what happens when you take a backup QB(Cassel) and make him a starter just because he has one good season let alone one game.
But also we could bring Flynn in to compete with Cassel or Orton and Stanzi. Best man wins.
This is an option vs. drafting a QB. Not saying Flynn is amazing or anything. Just another route to take.
Agreed
Considering there will be no worthwhile QBs in the draft at 11 or 12 and to be honest I don’t want RG3, I am not a big fan of the QB option run type offense. As long as he goes to the NFC I could care less.
Philbin for OC yes
I’m not sure about Matt Flynn, it’s too Matt Cassel like. Don’t want to go down that road again.
Matt Flynn is not Cassel-like. Look at Flynn's college bio. No Comparison. Cassel never even
started. Flynn was the most valuable player of the Championship Game.

I just can't get hung up on someone's draft status
Probably puts me in the minority. But if they play well and are an asset to the team, I don’t care if they come #1 overall or are Mr. Irrelevant.
I like Kendrick Lewis. I’ll like him a lot more if he shows more solid tackling like he did in the last game or two of the season, instead of being the liability he was while tackling earlier in the season. His draft status means nothing to me. “Value for a 5th” is nice, but if we find a better FS to start in his place – good. If he develops and becomes the all around FS we need and a general feel-good story – good.
I just want guys on the field that can get the job done. Regardless of what round (or no round) they were drafted in.

He was our playmaker at safety, considering the progression he has made from last year to this year, I believe he was a remarkable pick up. And he finishing his second season. I loves me some Chiefs secondary.
by Pacific Chief on Jan 7, 2012 12:20 PM CST up reply actions
He's good in coverage.
But until the last quarter of this season, he was a liability with his poor tackling. People remember the INT’s but forget the costly missed tackles that he was prone to.
The last probably two games or so, he showed much better form tackling and wasn’t doing that god awful high arm tackle stuff that any decent runner just shrugged off like a cheap sweater earlier in the year.
If he continues that improved tackling form and stays healthy, I’m plenty happy with him. But so far, he has a larger body of work of being a bad tackler. So hopefully this most recent bout is a trend and not an anomaly.
Foxtrot Alpha November - Sierra Hotel Oscar Tango!
So
Where the SS at? He’s supposed take care of running backs, not your deep half FS.
Lewis isn’t the greatest tackler, but it’s not like he whiffed on many tackles. His instincts are phenomenal so he’d at least get a hand on the guy to slow him down. I don’t remember many TDs actually allowed by Lewis because he’doss a tackle.
Me and Matt Cassel just - you up, dog!
by ChiefWarPaint on Jan 7, 2012 1:32 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Your FS is your last line of defense before the long TD and the big play.
You want him to make the tackle. He doesn’t have be a hard hitter / fumble forcing maniac. He has to just show good form and bring the guy down.
Lewis was pretty bad at that several times last year and most of this year. Only in recent weeks did he show consistency.
Not sure why people think a FS shouldn’t have to know how to tackle. He’s one of the most vital people on the field who needs to make a high % of his tackles. They don’t have to be fancy earth shattering world splitting tackles that kill the ball carrier. But he has to bring them down.
Lewis showed a very bad tendency to try to arm tackle, and tackle too high – and he got shrugged off a lot by any ball carriers (RB’s and WR’s) who were worth a shit. It was a very bad habit of his.
He’s showing progress though, and that’s good.
Foxtrot Alpha November - Sierra Hotel Oscar Tango!
Not sure why people think a FS shouldn’t have to know how to tackle.
As far as I’m concerned, every single defensive player should know how to tackle. I understand people are going to miss from time to time, but how many times have we watched the defense be in position to make the tackle only to miss?

Has the bar REALLY been set this low?
Wouldn't be surprised if OC/DC are both in-house promotions.
Gary Gibbs and Jim Zorn wouldn’t be terrible options and keeps some continuity going for the team.
"You can't be fat and fast too; so lift, run, diet, and work." ~ Hank Stram
Emmit wouldn't be a bad choice.
But, in RAC’s defense, it’s all about the LBs and that’s what Gibbs does. Keeps the system a little more in tact.
Romeo will definitely keep whomever it is on a short leash with the defense though.

I'm not a fan of Gibbs...
Though I believe that if he doesn’t get promoted he will end up getting a promotion on someone else’s team next season.
Zorn taking over at OC seems like a no brainer to me. This would most likely mean Muir retires… I’d like to see a young up and comer take over at Oline, and QB coach… I just don’t know whom those would be, thought I think that those are going to be important hires.
Go Chiefs!!!!
I think Gibbs gets it just because he's the LB coach.
And Romeo is going to retain control over the defense anyways. He’ll try and bring Gibbs along a little more by giving him some more responsibility. He won’t really be a DC, but he’ll be one in training.

From the future??
Romeos a heck of a DC and I would have loved him to keep his focus on just the defense. Ah well, he’ll still run the defense. What oc’s are out there that are available, other than McDaniels?
To me the coaching staff will be as follows
Romeo-HC
Emmitt Thomas-DC
Joe Philben-OC
At any rate, any OC not named Muir will be an upgrade
KC Draft prediction: No OT taken in first round
I don't think there's any way Philbin comes here now.

not saying he couldn’t or wouldn’t be any good … just saying he’s unproven at it as of now
would he be the WORST choice? not at all … would he be the BEST choice? who knows … I rather imagine Crennel will consider him and talk to Pioli about it, if that’s who he wants or thinks he wants

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Yes, but he helped run the Seattle offense.
And did it well enough to get an OC job in Washington. Kinda got screwed by getting promoted though. He shouldn’t have been made HC right away like that.
Also, he did a lot with our offense this year. For the sake of continuity, I imagine that OC will be an in-house promotion. Zorn helped run the offense, so he’s likely to be the hire.
BTW, I’m not saying it’s who I want. Just saying that’s who I’m thinking it will be.

Is that he would have almost complete control over the offense and would call the plays. He has neither in GB.
Over a Miami, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, or Jacksonville HC job?

Carthon did the single worst job of calling a game I ever saw
I was at a Browns game against Detroit (emotional – the return of Jeff Garcia after the Browns cut him) and was amazed to learn the Carthon had never heard of the Play action pass. Browns dominated on the ground in the first half, but never once did Carthon take advantage of it by calling a play action pass, despite the fact that receiving corp was one of the teams strengths. It let Detroit stay in the game and ultimately win it. RAC kept Carthon on board FAR too long.

Solid Hire
I half suspect that Pioli only interviewed Fisher and Del Rio to show us just how unimpressive the other options were. Ad, mark my words, I think that Fisher is going to be very underwhelming wherever he ends up. I predict he will make it to exactly zero Super Bowls with whatever team hires him. And if he’s given control over personnel, I predict he will struggle to make the playoffs.
Saying a coach will have zero Super Bowls isn't exactly the most bold statement...
But I think any owner/GM should do their due diligence by at least talking to other candidates… Or did they have to interview a white guy?

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Actually, It's A Trend
In the history of the NFL, there have been zero coaches who have won a Super Bowl with two teams.
That's All I Care About
And the best they can hope for is that Fisher pulls a Vermeil…gets to a Super Bowl (and loses) with the Eagles then wins one later with the Rams. Judging Fisher by the mediocrity he pumped out for a decade-plus after his Super Bowl appearance, though, he’s no Dick Vermeil. He’s a coach who players like who doesn’t get them to do better than about .500.
I know this...
And it was the case in the college ranks too… Until Saban did it.
But if I had to vote on every coach hire if he was going to win a SB or not, I’d almost always vote no, because its so hard to do. Even the good coaches don’t all win one

I think Billick
could walk right into a HC job if the right spot came along. He would have much more to lose if he became an OC and failed compared to what he would gain if he was successful. I would think that would be the case but you never know…
What a year! At least we have the Royals... Oh Wait!
Billick has been out of coaching for a while
It’s been long enough that I think GMs will be hesitant to straight up hand the team over to him. KC could be be appealing on offense. I know we finished 2nd last, but we get a half decent QB and JC and ToMo back and offense looks a lot better.

Gruden Is Going Nowhere
Jon Gruden anyway. He shot down the rumors about returning to the coaching ranks immediately. Why would he ever want to leave MNF anyway? There’s a good paycheck, no pressure, and he works regular days instead of 16-20 hour days.
He keeps getting mentioned because he’s relatively young and because he’s a name. I think he never coaches another game again…the guy looked burned out at the end in Tampa, he was coaching in the NFL for a long time, and I think he realizes he’s in a much better situation.
Emmit thomas has no desire to be a dc…he was on the verge of retiring when pioli and hunt got him to come over from Atl…..i say Morris….or maybe Greg manusky from SD…

Pioli is not a fan.
According to the story “War Room,” part of his rationale in coming here instead of Cleveland was Randy Lerner’s desire to pair him with Mangini.
There’s a guy who needs to rehab his reputation…somehow he is still persona non grata in the only coaching tree that he knows his way around. Poor bastard, I’d feel for him if he wasn’t a professional ass-hat (according to NY and CLE fans and press).

A little less than half
So it could maybe work.
And Del Rio does manage to field decent D’s despite lousy players year in and year out…
However, I’m pretty sure us leaving the base D so much is a reflection of personnel weaknesses more than anything else. Dorsey can’t rush the passer, so he gets pulled. We’ve never had a NT that can rush either, so he gets pulled. T-Jax is better than the other two but still not very good at it. Throw in Belcher not being able to cover me in the flat and I think you see why we switch up defenses…

Congrats to RAC if this is true.
I hope he does well and turns into an outstanding HC that is talked about for decades.
I am not really into the whole coach search. I will expect anyone who they choose as DC and OC will do well. The part of the staff that I have an opinion on is the strength and conditioning people. Except for the early freak lost knees, they’ve seemed to do a really good job. I’d like to keep them.
Raheem Morris as DC???
I know he failed spectacularly as HC in Tampa, but he is supposed to be good with DBs and that is our strength. He seem like a good fit with Romeo’s scheming ability.
Even the coaches that playcall, tend to have an OC
It helps manage their time and responsibilities during the week and game.

Why Would He Be An OC?
He’s got a good thing going in the SEC with Arkansas and he seemed to hate being an NFL coach (and wasn’t good at it…before he quit on his team).

Success?
Frank Gansz-8-22-1 and lasted two years. Gunther Cunningham-16-16 and was gone after two years. BOTH were fan and player favorites for the job. Only FIVE assistants took over their own team and won a SB since the merger. Those five former assistants were the Baltimore Colts’ Don McCafferty (1970), the Raiders’ John Madden (1976) and Tom Flores (1980, ’83), the Giants’ Bill Parcells (1986, ’90) and the 49ers’ George Seifert (1989, ’94). That works out to be LESS then an 8% success rate. If Romeo can join this short list of 5, I will be happy! If not, we will have this same discussion in here in less then 2 years! Sorry to be the wet blanket in the middle of everyone’s enthusiasm!

Eh, is that kind of a flawed stat, though?
There have been 45 super bowls.
28 head coaches have won a super bowl. That number is not 45 because some coaches have won multiples.
I don’t have the figures on hand right now, but if you can provide the number of total head coaches ever in the NFL since the merger, I’d almost wager that that 28 figure is around or even less than your calculated 8% figure. All it would take would be 280 total coaches to make that number 10%, which wouldn’t be much of a deviation from your 8% figure.
I did find this list of all NFL coaches ever, back it dates back to the 1920’s. And I’m not going to pick out just the coaches since the merger, as it’s close to lunch time and I’m starving. But that list has 448 different coaches since the 20’s.
It’s kind of a cherry-picked and out of context stat, I’d think.
I’ll gladly eat crow if the number of head coaches to win a super bowl is vastly more than 8% of all total head coaches to take the reins of a team.
I just don’t see the number in the context of total coaches to coach in the league vs those to win super bowls being all that far off, and kind of making this stat irrelevant.

Gary Gibbs should be named DC
He has coached the linebackers the last several years and I think we can all agree that our linebackers have seen huge growth under him. Hali, Johnson, Houston and am improving Belcher.
Gibbs has prior DC experience and Romeo gave him credit the last 3 games for helping him with the game plan.
Let Gibbs put together the game plan during the week and Romeo call plays on Sunday.
As for the Offensive Coordinator I have know idea what direction to go. Hopefully Romeo and Pioli have someone in mind. But Gibbs should be the obvious choice for DC

"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
by GenericBrand on Jan 7, 2012 11:37 AM CST up reply actions
Actually, just the opposite. If Romeo is HC, he really does not have time to call all the plays on
Sunday. He and Gibbs can game plan during the week but then it should be Gibbs that calls most of the plays. Romero will be busy monitering everything else. This is one of my reasons for fearing that the D could suffer with Romer as HC.
Why wouldn't he have time?
Sean Payton calls plays. Bill Bellichick calls plays. Mike McCarthy calls plays.
Agree. In fact that is why I like the HC to also call plays because it keeps him more
into the flow of the game. However, if he’s helping to call plays while the O is in, he doesn’t have time to be talking and caoching the D. And Crennel, is not one that I expect, nor should he, to be calling offensive plays. That means that the O has to be almost completely turned over to soemone else. Just hope we get the right people.
I wasn't aware anyone was talking about Romeo calling the plays on offense
Romeo and his defensive staff put together the gameplan during the week, Romeo calls the defensive plays. Whoever the OC is calls the offensive plays while Romeo’s doing his HC thing as well as seeing to the D when necessary.
I agree 100%...
I’ve said for awhile now that if RAC becomes the Head Coach that Gibbs needs to be promoted to DC. He has a lot of years of experience as not only a quality coach but years as a DC at the college and NFL level (New Orleans). If RAC wants consistency on that side of the ball, promoting Gibbs will do that.
Offensively I would like to see the Chiefs bring in Green Bay QB coach Tom Clements. I think he would be a great fit offensively.
I think this would be a huge mistake
Let’s take a look at how KC has done with “Player’s Coaches”. The first would be Frank Ganz. He was actually appointed HC after the players approached Steadman about how unhappy they were with Mackovic. Ganz went 8-22-1 in his two years. The next one was Herm Edwards, who led the Chiefs to a 15-33 record, with the team getting worse every season.
I was not impressed with RAC’s tenure in Cleveland (I lived here and got to experience it). The team had a lot of discipline issues and he made a lot of mistakes in his assistants. Most disappointing was that the defense didn’t play like a RAC defense that you see when he’s DC. I’d MUCH rather see him stay on as DC.
That said, I hope if Pioli makes this move that he’s right and I’m wrong.

I don't totally disagree Big Chief
But in fairness those teams in Cleveland were brutal talent-wise. Crennel had no chance with that team and GM/owner. With this team if he can just keep the train moving and hire a good OC we’ll be fine.
We're the same team as last year, except incredibly better, and with new players.
I agree too but then aren't you just talking about holding the line (mediocrity) and
not a major Super Bowl run? I just don’t see it. If this hire is true, I believe that we’ve just committed ourselves to some of the same o, same o for the next few years. It will not create or build a SB quality team and I thought at one time that that was the objective.
Prior to Crennel coming on, no team did worse in the draft than the Browns since they returned to the league in 99
But Phil Savage, who hired RAC, did a decent job in his drafts and the Browns talent pool increased dramatically while he was there. The bad thing is that the results on the field didn’t show that.
The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made. ~ Groucho Marx
Savage's drafts decent?
I’m having a hard time believing that Big Chief.
My concern with RAC isn’t his ability to maximize talent, it’s his ability to keep the train running on time: Game management. Can he not only use his timeouts, but use them in a way that buys the team extra time in crunch situations? Can he manage clock-and-play-call, along with his staff, to keep the ball moving in rough situations?

I Never Heard Of Vermeil Being Soft In KC
When Willie Roaf was retiring, that was one of the ploys the Chiefs reportedly used to get him to come back…that Herm’s practices weren’t as rough as Vermeil’s. In fact, that was one of the knocks on Vermeil, that his practices were too hard on an aging team. He probably would have gotten much better results out of the younger players who filtered in during 2007 and 2008 (who Herm didn’t run nearly hard enough).
Me might've been forced to pick the lesser of two evils.
It’s very likely that promoting RAC was the only way to keep him and this defense in town. I think with the right assistants in place he can manage this. I’m still concerned about game management decisions but again hopefully the right coordinators in his ear will help him with that.

Agree HIV. Does a player's coach run a tough offseason program. Does he have good
disclipine? Does he make good game time changes and adjustments? How long does it last if he does? Just wondering.
remember when Bowe was benched the entire 1st q of the GB game for a team meeting protocol infraction?
the RAC cracks the whip. discipline won’t be a problem. The coach has to have the support of the players, or they quit & get blown out 5 times a season.

I wonder about that too...Two men whose personalities (insecurities?) could have really set this team back.
I have to admit, if everything had been copacetic this year there would’ve been a couple more wins out of this deal and we STILL might have won the West.

Still frustrating though.

Not To Mention
That Haley made a couple of really stupid strategic moves in his offseasons. Fired an offensive coordinator two weeks before the season started and scrapped the entire offense? That wasted the entire 2009 preseason. Decided to use the 2011 preseason to run laps rather than work on the new offense? That paid dividends on the field.
It’s not really tough to tell players to run laps or to yell at them because they make you look bad. It’s a little tougher to help create schemes they can execute and put them in a position to execute those schemes successfully while holding them accountable. The latter is an example of a coach that emphasizes discipline, the former is an example of an insecure bully.
I think Gibbs is the way to go as well. He has great coaching experience and knows his players
The defense ain’t broke…so let’s not try to fix it. Stay the course with Gibbs.
This offseason needs to be about finding fixes at QB, OC, and OL. I don’t care if we lose D-Bowe…I don’t, but we MUST resign Brandon Carr!
RAC
He’ll do great next year. he’ll have returning talent and much more talent than he had with the browns. Now, we need to figure out what to do with the QB situation.
Don't forget Mel Tucker, interim HC in Jacksonville
He was Romeo’s DC in Cleveland in 2008. A little more Wikipedia digging reminds us that Mo Carthon resigned during RAC’s 2006 campaign as OC due to terrible playcalling!
by MattHoover on Jan 7, 2012 11:51 AM CST reply actions 1 recs
Exactly.
I could see RAC bringing Mel in, and maybe the secondary coach (as he’d coached with RAC and Tucker in Cleveland).
Part of me wonders if that wasn’t the idea behind the Del Rio interview…intel on Mel. Could mean that Tucker is seen as a future head coaching candidate too…
Talk about your plenty, talk about your ills/
One man gathers what another man spills
If this happens, I’ll go on record as saying, I have my serious doubts.
As Jason Drue Keith so well pointed out above, the success rate for assistants isn’t all that great and I’m also quite leery about so called "players coaches", like maybe Herm and others. However, as a 40+ year Chief fan I will support Romeo and wish for the best. He’s a great guy but my concerns are over his abilities to oversea the entire teams and all activities and show the necessary leadership. It’s big job. At the same time, I see him as being Pioli’s "yes" man and I actually do have concerns about the D declining if he’s got many other worries. Anyway, if it happens, I hope for the best and I do feel that a good OC and QB are even more important to the future of the Chief’s. My first "wish" at this point would be Philbin as OC and assistant HC, they may be a real sleeper combination and we sure need to take some chances if we’re ever going to get an elite QB; my second choice would be RGIII but I don’t think that that will happen and it does take too long for a rookie sometimes to adjust to the pro game (though I do think he could be the exception). My third choice, if healthy would be Manning and I doubt if this is going to happen but he could sure take this organization for a nice ride for a few years like Joe Montana did and last, if not other option, I’d go with Orton and get him all the support that we can. Either way, I see this team as winning ten games and the West next year but after that, then a tougher schedule and the newness of Crennel will be worn off and I would see problems down the line. I don’t think that he can build the team in the long run. Being a players coach only lasts for a short while and I think many are fooling themselves if the believe otherwise.

Like it
Being a coach and seeing situations where you remove a popular coach (regardless of their stature – DC, Assistant, Special Teams, etc.) there is typically a healing process with players which is not good. The Chiefs players seem to connect with Romeo better than any other coach.
I like the decision if this report is true.
I hope that they hire a solid OC and a solid DC that Romeo could help mentor.

I'm not jumping for joy
But I’m not upset either. I’m going to take the wait and see approach. I believe Crennel will do better here than in CLE because he has talent now, but still the proof needs to be in the pudding.
We're the same team as last year, except incredibly better, and with new players.
I love pudding.

If it wasn’t for the accursed paycheck, would I really imprison myself in this dungeon of the human soul?

head coach expirience
im glad that we are getting a head coach with head coaching expirience. although Crennel didn’t have great results in clevland atleast there wont be any adjustment time from moving from a coordinator position to head coach.

good sign, save one for peyton manning if healthy
will the chiefs ever draft a Qb in the first round, not since todd blackledge in 83. and the chiefs could of had marino. OH well atleast 65 toss power trap worked for KC, it should be wide open red. Hank stram still the man.

yes, would be absolutely shocking if we dont get a new one
st coaches when they dont perform are discarded for some other guy who may not even be good with special teams….depends on the head coach and the value he places on it. look at vermeil, first ST coach ever, hence why he especially appreciates it, and found use for a sollid unit even with the greatest show on turf. Vermeil went and got not just a son, but his father’s advice as well, a 2 for 1 at ST coach
I would hope romeo knows someone who needs that chance

maybe if hue jackson gets fired in oaktown
we could land al saunders as oc

Different offensive scheme, though...would Pioli OK this?
RAC’s hired Air Coryell coordinators before…Chudzinski’s first run as OC was inder Crennel in Cleveland. He called the plays for Derek Anderson’s Pro Bowl year.
I wouldn’t mind this at all, if it clears the front office (as it all has to on One Arrowhead Drive).

Lombardi is saying we will hire "an accomplished offensive coordinator."
Who could that be??
Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.
You bite your sarcastic little tongue, lol

we know this pretty much had to happen.
im ok with this because it keeps our imo top 5 defensive coaching staff…..thomas, gibbs….all at high value….
now go get an offensive staff, and make sure to find a st coach, and im content

I’m ok with this move, like to see us promote with in at DC perhaps Thomas he has done good with our d-line, Dont think I want Bibin as OC like to see us go back to run first then pass offense we will have JC back looks like Jones is gone or gonna retire so JC as our main back and like to see Orton given a shot with this offense wouldnt mind seeing Jay Gruden in as OC But I’m sure we wil have a suprise here next year as OC
Hue Jackson gets fired
Bring him in as OC? I know raiders were claiming he was some kind of offensive genius…
Me and Matt Cassel just - you up, dog!

Get him a top 10 QB within 3 years
… and there is no reason we shouldn’t be contenders for the title. Stay with an average at best QB and Romeo will be a miracle worker if we get a playoff win.
I like this move
I think we should stay in house and make Zorn the next OC and give the DC spot to Eimmit Thomas. If he could make the secondary with sabby back there look decent, I say give him a shot with the whole defensive unit…

FOR THE RECORD...
i DO NOT HATE THIS HIRE!
Whereas I agree that the choices became limited QUICKLY, so did the rumors that it was a mere formality. I am just concerned that a DC turned HC will try and keep us a run always team! I have seen our team lead the NFL time after time with a superior running game. With that, GOOD teams shut down our running game in the playoffs and our team isn’t built to respond to it. This is my ONLY concern with Romeo! Will he find(and give control) to an OC that understands having a dynamic passing offense? We have NEVER learned this lesson! Will we now learn?

i think we learned that in the playoff game, and added Baldwin and Breaston to address it
Even with Orton or Cassel at QB, if you take this year’s team, add Charles, Berry, Moeaki, and shore up the trenches through the draft and free agency…that is a strong playoff contender.
Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl

Sounds good
Romeo will still have a tight grip on coordination of the D. RAC must find a very solid OC to succeed.

I think this is a mistake
This is a lazy hire, who else did Pioli interview? Another bad decision by this organazation

I’d much rather have RAC.

happy with RAC, for sure.
just wondering. more outside people not wanting anything to do with pioli, as was the case with haley.

not so fast?
Chiefs on Facebook stated they have not Announced or made any decisions for the head coach and have no press conferences scheduled to announce any head coach actions. Yeah they aren’t going to say they have but the fact nothing is coming out and they have disputed any head coach signing and no press conference scheduled seams to speak that maybe someone thought or spoke too soon and they in fact have not made my decision

More mediocrity !!
I am done paying to watch the Chiefs play . I go to at least 1 or 2 games every year , this streak has ended . This goes to show that the KCM CHIEFS are just that Mediocre . They only care about filling the seats not winning championships. They should have done what ever it would have taken to get a proven big name coach. I will always support them but until they start caring about winning championships instead of just making it to the playoffs than i will not spend 27.00 for parking and the ticket prices. Well I am officially pissed off 24-40 if that does not SCREAM mediocre than i do not no what does . Ya who cares if it was with the browns . Crenel is a defensive coach not a head coach . THIS SUCKS
