Packers Coach Asked About Joe Philbin's Interview With Chiefs

PrintOn Wednesday news came down via ESPN that the Kansas City Chiefs were interviewing Joe Philbin, the Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator, for the head coaching position. Philbin was the only known candidate for the Chiefs job at the time, outside of Romeo Crennel.
Packers head coach Mike McCarthy was asked about the report on Philbin and said:
"I think we have a great staff. A number of excellent assistants. I think the world of Joe Philbin. The job he's done here speaks for itself. But as far as other opportunities that are going on in the NFL or college football, it's not really my place to talk about it. But, again, we have an outstanding coaching staff and I'm very proud of that."
As for Philbin's chances of ending up in Kansas City...that we don't know.
I did find it interesting, though, to hear ESPN's Adam Schefter say on Ross Tucker's podcast, "I think Joe Philbin is going to be Scott Pioli's kind of guy, to be honest with you. Humble, quiet, hard-working guy who's from Massachusetts. I could see Scott Pioli falling for Joe Philbin." Schefter's just speculating here, obviously, but interesting nonetheless. He said he didn't know who the favorite was, if there even was one.
So we go back to waiting on news of the Chiefs next head coach.

rather have Crennel here than there, wouldn’t blame him one bit for taking HC job elsewhere if he’s passed over here … would be a shame to lose the guy
dunno, just not seeing Philbin as HC … esp after “reaching” for Haley (never having been HC before he came to KC) would Pioli do the same thing all over again? (which isn’t to say that Philbin isn’t or might not be good)
call it “comfort level” call it “continuity” call it a “hunch” but my personal choice would be Crennel (not that it’s my choice to make)

But no HC can be a HC before someone gives them the opportunity of being a HC. Chicken and egg thing right? Some succeed very well on their first gig (Tomlin, Payton). Some don’t.

It comes down to that question that I have been mulling over lots lately
And not meant as a chicken or egg, but:
Do the great coordinators make the QB’s or the other way around? I feel although both work together, It’s the great QB’s making the coordinators look better.
Brady has had how many different Coordinators? Especially if you look at who has gone onto HC jobs because of him (Weiss, McDaniels, and now possibly O’brien).

But if you look at our OL over the last 3 games with Orton than the previous 4 with Palko, they played a helluva lot better for/with Orton. Still have trouble in the redzone, but moving the ball, actually scoring, going more than 3 and out… Orton was sacked 1x in 3 games, Palko 11x in 4. Just saying

I agree ...
I still think Orton could be at least “better than average” given a gooder OLine than we have now … add to that a healthy RB, and a full off-season to work with the WR’s and … well, you get the idea
and in my book, that “better than average” with a great rest of the team, is preferable to an unproven rookie who costs us the chance to upgrade other areas for a couple of years

As with Journeyman QB cassell, who really knew anything about cassell before brady got hurt, and thats all cassell is a journeyman QB who would still be number two in new England if not for Bradys injury

My initial reaction is that this would be great with the added bonus that maybe Philbin
would want to bring Flynn to KC. I’ll bet the possibilities were discussed. I also find Philbin’s background and experience very impressive and I personally would also bet that Crennel would continue on as DC and assistant head coach. May be a perfect situation.

Ideally, yes, that is the perfect scenario in my book as well
but I have a hard time believing that RAC is going to accept a “demotion” to his old job. I’m still hoping RAC gets the HC job, but oh well, Pioli will do what he do.
I'll also add that I'm not sold on Flynn either
but if Philbin does come here and wants his guy then I’ll support him.

It's a tough call
The players really like RAC, so there may be some small backlash…though I doubt it’d last long if this guy is any good. Also, I’d hate for RAC to feel slighted, and just leave after his contract is up next season.

why I didn’t know that. Because he has played 2 games in the NFL. Sorry I’m just set on getting one in the 1st or 2nd round of the draft. I just don’t feel comfortable taking another teams backup again. Specially if that involves giving him a large contract for the 2 great games he played.

The good news is that we haven't heard of Romeo being interviewed anywhere else as of now.
His stock as a potential HC went up after finishing the season 2-1, but he is a bit older than the average coach, so that might be holding him back. Plus, I wonder if he even wants to go somewhere new to HC. Maybe he’d retire after his contract expires as DC next year if not promoted, but I don’t think he leaves us this season.
Tebow might know Jesus, but Bill Muir is old enough to have actually babysat him in the manger.

Here sure, he has the relationship with the team and players he wants. Somewhere else is starting over in that department. Remember there were reports that he had been offered the interim coaching gig earlier in the season and turned it down. But all this of course is conjecture.

As to the "here sure"
I’m thinking the same thing. I think he feels settled here, and based on his personality, I think Romeo likes the KC area. It seems to me like he’d be happy to have this job, but would rather stay on as DC here than be a HC elsewhere. He might even slightly prefer being DC here to HC here, as he seems like he really enjoys the xs and os and working with the defensive players and scheme exclusively.

Which can be a great thing. Meaning if someone else gets the HC job and he’s ‘demoted’ to DC, RAC won’t be upset about it. I wonder if that’s part of the pitch to HC’s coming in… If you want this job, you have to take RAC as your DC. That would be a way better asterisk (IMHO) than, If you want the job you have to take Cassel as your QB.

Sounds like Philbin would be great for the OL too. He coaches the zone-blocking scheme.

We really don't.
However, Wright is quoting an article written about someone else about Fisher’s coaching interviews and stating that Fisher won’t come to the Chiefs because he wants to go to a team whose ownership is passionate about winning the Super Bowl. And the Chiefs’ ownership doesn’t care about winning. Just filling the stadium and making money. That’s fracking depressing.
That makes me think that as much as I love the Chiefs… I wonder if I’ll see them win a Super Bowl in my lifetime.
