Report: Chiefs Interviewed Jeff Fisher Last Week

Earlier this morning I wrote this about the Kansas City Chiefs coaching search: "The "A" list name this year is Jeff Fisher, who is out of work right now, but I would guess he's not one of the guys who interviewed in KC considering Fisher's name has been in the media connected to multiple jobs already and we haven't heard him connected to the Chiefs."

And of course shortly after that news comes down that the Chiefs interviewed Fisher. Bob Gretz has the full story and all the details at BobGretz.com but, unfortunately for those of you who want Fisher, the report states nothing materialized beyond one meeting and Fisher will not be coming to KC.

Gretz's report jives with one we heard from ESPN this morning that the Chiefs conducted multiple interviews before the regular season ended.

Fisher's name has been attached to a number of jobs already this year (actually all of them) and the favorites appear to be the St. Louis Rams and Miami Dolphins.

So, outside of Fisher's interview, the known candidates for the Chiefs Romeo Crennel and Joe Philbin, the Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator who is reportedly interviewing with the Chiefs.

I don't get why people complain about Gretz charging for content

If you value the information you pay the outrageous sum of $25 per season, if not then you can just go to the other 100 sites with free content. It’s like complaining that a band you like doesn’t just give free downloads of their music. Gretz has bills to pay just like everyone else.

You'd have to ask him

Considering that he’s done it two years in a row I can only assume it’s working out better than the free content model from before.

I think

It’s because there are so many free sites and info out there. That’s why people get upset. If it’s news you will hear about it without paying.

I personally don’t care much for Gretz’s site because of the layout, that’s just me. I do think though if it’s so good and he gets a decent amount of page views why is he not making his extra cash off of advertising revenue?

by Spiderwomn69 on Jan 4, 2012 11:54 AM CST up reply actions

Which is exactly

Why I tell people not to complain about AP adds. It’s rare, but every once in awhile I see someone complain…I’m surprised Thorman’s don’t have more adds, personally…I know I would.

Actually I just added a do not track widget

It tells me how much my computer is being watched and ad blocks and sbnation so far has the highest of any of the other website I visit. It has 16 and normally its around 3-6.

Wow

It doesn’t seem like that. Good to know.

by Spiderwomn69 on Jan 4, 2012 12:38 PM CST up reply actions

I assume he can't make money off ad revenue because his site is one you'd visit only once per day

As opposed to AP, where there is new content hourly.

by jmcgoblue on Jan 4, 2012 12:00 PM CST up reply actions

this is pretty much it

AP and Gretz are two vastly different things … AP (what Joel tosses up) is based on news that’s already out there (Joel doesn’t do a whole lot of investigative reporting) and this site generates revenue thru multiple page hits (not just the main page stroies, but the fanposts as well)

so Gretz pretty much has to charge because he’s not tied in to multiple ads, etd … he’s a freelance operation and yes, has to generate income somehow

People try to twist his .500 seasons to suit their argument.

I like RAC, but Fisher’s resume destroys his. That doesn’t mean he’s a better hire…RAC has some inherit advantages, like ease of transition. But Fisher is hardly overrated.

If you’re getting to around 8 wins each year you’re in a position to make the playoffs.

So?

Does this make him a bad coach? I’ve stayed out of this dance because it happens in every Fischer thread. How can you judge a coach by simply looking at his W-L record, especially during an era where the Colts won double didgits EVERY YEAR?His teams consistantly were in the mix, I don’t remember any embarassing seasons where they weren’t even competitive.

I just think judging a coach by looking at his W-L record in a vacuum with no context is rediculous.

Plus, he isn’t coaching the Titans, he’ll be coaching the Chiefs, a team who is a QB away from being a perenial contender. The 1 good QB I can remember him having was Steve McNair and he took him a yard away from beating the Rams. So he didn’t win a bunch of Superbowls with Kerry Collins and VY, now he’s a bad coach?

Who said he was a bad coach?

I’m only saying he’s undeserving of the hype. He doesn’t have an elite resume, but people are treating him like he’s an elite coach. I don’t think he’d be a terrible hire. I just don’t think he’d be that great of a hire, and probably worse than RAC, given the whole fit thing.

Titans were down 7, the TD and PAT would have only tied and sent it to OT.

Hate to belabor a point, but people often think that Fisher almost won that SB. Of course we don’t know if he would have gone for 2 there (would have seemed foolish) but in any case – it wasn’t for the win.

What I think 8-8 should mean

is that your team had a terrible year. A good team that has some bad luck, misfortune or what ever you want to call it should fall no less then 8-8. The team should be consistantly hiting at least a 10-6 mark and actually competeing in the playoffs not just hoping they might have won enough to get in if this team wins and that team loses and the moon rises at 5:46pm and the tide is high at ….. you get the point.

But the last two years, and 3 of last 5.

Still not the point, the point is that you were competing for a playoff spot, typically all season, and likely the last game.

The current Chiefs, with RAC at HC and Palko inactive, are plenty worthy of being in that discussion.

Not totally true

In 17 season Fisher only went to the post season 6 times. Gruden went once every 2 years (5 times in 10 season), Cowher went 10x in 15 years. Having a mediocre .500 season doesn’t mean you will get into the playoffs it just means you don’t suck.

It's not about sticking our noses up

Fisher is a defensive guy, same as Crennel. Crennel has been with this team for 2 seasons and has done very well with our defense. Fisher has been out of work the past season and there is a chance he would want to coach a team that runs a 4-3 scheme because that’s what he prefers. It’s less about what Fisher has done and how awesome some think he is and more about trying to continue what’s been started as opposed to starting over.

by Spiderwomn69 on Jan 4, 2012 12:15 PM CST up reply actions

Which is what I was referring to above. Inherit advantages to RAC, yes. But Fisher’s resume is far better.

Give me some detail on the "far" better.

I think RAC’s got a shitload of championship games and Super Bowls to go on…but they were only as an ass’t or as a defensive coordinator.

Fisher does have a good resume, and he spent most of Crennel’s DC years as a head coach. That’s one key advantage.

I’m just wondering what qualifies as “far” better, resume-wise…

Talk about your plenty, talk about your ills/

by go_saleaumua on Jan 4, 2012 3:13 PM CST up reply actions

Oh...to me 142-120

vs. 24-40, would be the ‘far’ part.

There are equipment managers that have more rings than Fisher too, but we have to differentiate between the HC and the assistants.

Would you be ok with Weis being the HC?

The most attractive thing about Fisher, to me is that he is out of the NE/Pioli Family and it would show that Pioli is ‘learning’ and willing to step outside of his comfort zone.

That is not to say I hate the idea of RAC as HC, far from it. I do think that it is typical of AP to sh8t on someone once they are no longer a real possibility. If this post was about how Jeff Fisher was now the frontrunner for the job, the tone would be completely different in the comments.

by kcsno56 on Jan 4, 2012 4:45 PM CST up reply actions

All points valid, and well-put.

I was waiting for someone to start shitting on RAC, who I think “could” be a markedly better coach this time around…IF he learned to provide more structure and discipline. (Mighty big “IF” in my mind).

I’d be glad to have Jeff Fisher to coach here because he creates a culture of high expectations and intense play—two things we NEED in KC. However, his not being out of the Parcells/Belichick “tree” is cause enough for me to suspect that Pioli would never consider him. I wish Pioli could think more outside the box with these kinds of things…

Me, I’m not going to shit on a completely capable coach, and if he was a serious candidate for the job I’d be quite happy. But if I know he’s not going to make it becuase he doesn’t “fit our system,” I don’t spend a lot of time talking it over, either. That’s just me.

Agreed and agreed.

Also, for some coaches that make it to the next level (I’m not making a blanket ALL coaches remark here), they do it with their second team. Ok, but none (as far as I know) had 16.5 years on team number 1.

by Eastcoastransplant on Jan 4, 2012 12:37 PM CST up reply actions

Disagree

RAC may not have years of head coaching and his winning percentage as a head coach may be less than someone who spent significantly more time doing it, that doesn’t make Fisher leaps and bounds better than Romeo. Also why would we want Fisher? Do we want a defensive minded HC who prefers a 4-3, so we can change our defensive scheme? Do you think Romeo would not take a HC position elsewhere if Fisher was offered the job here?

by Spiderwomn69 on Jan 4, 2012 12:07 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly. Screw records.

I want the guy who will bring us the most success the fastest, and past records with different teams only matter a teensy tiny little bit.

I really Don't Want to Blow this Team Up

Again. I don’t want a flash in the pan, I’d like the consistency, which is why I tend to lean more toward RAC. I don’t see him as any bigger a risk than any other coach you bring in, but if you keep a guy that’s been here and let him continue what’s been started, that seems like an advantage.

It’s our O that has had so many issues – moving the ball – and uhm, scoring! Our D is great, our O has potential. But that potential won’t be realized unless we get a QB that really does things. And an OC that knows how to make it happen.

The problem is...

Whomever is signed as the new head caoch will have to use Cassel because he is Pioli’s guy. That’s enough to scare away most credible candidates.

Damn, unfortunate if the reports are true he won't be coming here

He would be a great addition. I’m betting that he wants full control of personnel decisions, as most veteran, successful coaches end up with going to new coaching jobs. Not necessarily "who's better", but "who's a better fit".

I think that’s the most important aspect. We have a team that has shown it can win. Now we need a coach that can take (mostly) the same talent to the next level.

Do we have the right personnel for a Jeff Fisher team?

Eh, let Miami or St Louis have him.

Same with Jon Gruden, Brian Billick, Bill Cowher, or any of these other guys who aren’t coaching right now.

They are going to want complete control, and that would cause problems. Regardless of any personal feelings for Pioli, we all recognize that he’s in charge of putting the team together. So it’s better that he has a coach that is on board with his philosophy.

The worst case scenario is that we get a big name coach, and in 3 years we’re still terrible and have to fire one of them…and choose wrong.

by citadelchief on Jan 4, 2012 12:02 PM CST reply actions

yes but on the other hand

Pioli needs to consider people other than his old Patriots cronies. There’s a lot of talent in the world so interview as many as is reasonable and hire the best guy – not just somebody you knew from the good old days.

While I don’t want Gruden or Billick (I might be able to live with Cowher) I also understand that a lot of those guys want full control because as a HC they’ve been in the position before of having to make a turd sandwhich before because their GM only brought in turds.

by aFan4Life on Jan 4, 2012 12:28 PM CST up reply actions

But you want somebody who is on the same page.

Otherwise you end up with situations like they’ve had in San Diego, Jacksonville, and Miami where both the GM and HC are on hot seats, but you have no idea which one (or is it both?) is really holding the team back.

If the HC and GM are on the same page, and the team doesn’t do well, then it’s easier. You just call for a clean slate.

how much control does he want vis-a-vis players and/or coaches?

does his scheme work with our players?
can he adapt his scheme if it doesn’t?
what does Pioli want in a HC and is Pioli happy with the D right now?
if so, does he value Crennel and the 3-4 over a possible 4-3?
E-P or West Coast Offense?
Matt Cassel or Draft or Orton or Flynn?

I'm completely against the hiring of Philbin

Their offense is only successful because of Rodgers. He looks like a great coach because he has a great QB. They lack a running game. This applies to most successful OC with a good QB. I’d rather promote a guy who has very little to nothing to work with and has mediocre to decent success, because we have the talent on our offense to do good things with even the slightest intelligence running the show. He may be a good coach, but anyone can run a successful offense with Rodgers at the helm.

I respect all of the support for Crennel but I have never heard any decent arguments

as to why he should be the HC. I like him too and I think he’s a great guy and great DC but I can’t see him as anything but a mediocre step to the Chief’s future. Someone please tell me why he is the HC that will take the Chief’s to the SB.

by jcox31mc on Jan 4, 2012 2:24 PM CST reply actions

Hmmm...

I don’t know that I can tell you why he WILL take the Chiefs to the SB… but here’s what I have to say about Romeo:

He may not have the best HC record… but neither does Fisher. He may not have had the best talent in Cleveland… just like Fisher in Tennessee. He may not be the big flashy prize like Fisher.

But we are not getting Fisher because we’d have to mortgage the future to get the QB he’d want and that still might not be enough. We’ve got too many holes that need to be filled. Sure we can trade draft picks and then spend a bunch of money in FA. That might work, but that’s how Peterson operated. That’s not Pioli.

With Crennel, he’s already got the support of the locker room. We know who he is. He is a safe choice. He’s smart enough to know what he doesn’t know. They’ll bring in someone like Philbin to run the offense and leave the defense to Romeo, which is his specialty. Kansas City has always had this feel of being a team that was all about heart and family. The great coaches we’ve had over the last few decades have all had the support of the players on the team. I’m not convinced Haley did. Not in the end. He was trying too hard to be one of the guys and be their buddy, not their boss. That won’t work. Crennel is professional enough to keep it clear that they can have a good relationship, but he’s still in charge. They will respect him. And they’ll work their butts off for him. But most of all, hiring Crennel as your HC keeps a certain amount of continuity in the coaching structure going forward. We don’t get set back too badly by a brand new coaching staff wanting to reinvent the wheel. The defense looks good, no reason to change it, so no reason to change up Crennel. Bring someone in who can take advantage of the talent we have and find the right pieces to complete the offense.

And honestly, I think Crennel might just be about to take us deep in the playoffs because of all of this.

2012 Chiefs Draft Picks by Falcon58: G DeCastro 1st round, NT Ta'amu 2nd round or OT Adcock 2nd/3rd round, TE Egnew 3rd round, RB Ganaway 5th/6th, QB Case Keenum 5th/6th. Resign: Carr, McClain, Bailey, Bowe, Orton (in that order). Trade Dorsey for picks, promote Gordon to DT/DE.

Falcon,

Thank you for your thoughts. I appreciate your viewpoint but IMO, many of your reasons are the exact reasons why our Chief’s keep being mediocre or even below average. I know the players like Crennel, how could they not. He is a very nice guy from anything I’ve ever seen or heard. I don’t see Fisher as trying to be big "Flashy" like you said. Fisher, I believe, is a smart coach and after having a year to think about it, I’m sure that he has some very specific ideas on how to build a SB team. My question was not about Fisher, but since you brought it up, I really do think that he will do very well for someone. I also think most players liked him too.

Just your thought that Fisher wants a quality QB to me is a great plus that many of us have been saying for years. If this team is ever going to be a SB team, many of us agree that a top level QB is a necessity. In fact,
I believe that QB is by far the Chief’s biggest shortcoming. Once you get the right QB, it is much easier to bring in the other pieces. Guys do want to play for a winner. The other big area that you and many mention is respect and continuity . I agree, very important but these attributes go right out the door when things start going wrong. Again, I appreciate your input but to me it’s just another step forward to mediocrity for our Chief’s. JMO.

I wasn't saying Fisher is a "flashy coach", but that he is the big shiny coaching candidate.

The Flashy Hire.

He is a smart coach. But the biggest issue for Fisher is going to a team with a young potential superstar QB either already on their team or potentially available in the draft. I don’t disagree with the need to get a franchise QB… we definitely need one… but with our current talent situation, I’d personally rather see the Chiefs spend this years’ FA money and draft picks trying to fill in as many of the remaining holes as possible, rather than spending 2 to 3 picks this year and next to move up and get Luck or RGIII. I think we’d handicap ourselves doing that. However, we do have the cash, so maybe they are planning to do this and spread the cash through FA. I want to be able to protect that QB, give him weapons to work with and depth in case of injuries. We’ve barely got 1 of those 3 things right now. I can live with Cassel or Orton for one more year if necessary. My offseason plan would actually be to drop both of those guys and go for Flynn, but that’s probably a pipe dream.

I agree and disagree. I think we need the QB now. Actually, our OL played OK

much of the time as in the GB game. If we have a QB that can make decissions and move the ball, the OL looks a lot better. Get and grow with RGIII and use FA to build other areas the best we can and I think this team would take off right away.

I think the same with Flynn. Get him and build around him but #1 to me should be the QB. To continue building and then fill in a QB later, just seems backwards to me. QB is much more important to me than the coach. Again, I like Crennel but I really don’t see him making a big difference. However, RGIII or Flynn really could and I think it is time to take the risk. Not to, keeps this team at mediocrity.

If Fisher is smart

He’ll go to Tampa – nobody seems to be keying on that though.

There is some connection to STL – Kevin Demoff is the Rams COO – and his dad is Fisher’s agent.

Miami is a better choice than Stl, but Tampa is the best of the bunch. Tampas owners don’t interfere, they have the money and aren’t afraid to spend it. He may have issues in Miami if they keep Mike Nolan. Much like we discussed here, Nolan runs a 3-4 and Fisher is a 4-3 guy.

I’d say he should go to Florida – either Tampa or Miami. If he goes to Stl he’s digging his own grave.
