I'm not sure I feel good about getting a RT in round 1.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
He's probably more of a backup left tackle.
Which isn’t real good for a round 1 pick, either.
When you gotta go in the lion's den, you don't go quiet. You go in loud, kick the door down and say WHERE IS THE SONUVABITCH. -B. Billick
Fortunately
those aren’t the only two options.
"Be an analyst. Don’t be a douchebag." - Terrell Suggs to Skip Bayless
of course
But, this OT class dropps off real quick after the first couple and the FA class looks week at T… so… KC may have to go for it.
Good teams do draft RTs in rd 1

Good teams do that because it's a luxury pick.

or a need pick
When they have good starters in most other positions

Lol, isn't that the definition of a luxury pick?! :)
“Lesse, we got our QB, LT, CBs, pass rushers up the ying yang, but Goody says we gotta draft SOMEbody….oh hell, our right tackle kinda sucks, lets get a fatty. At least he’ll be cheap.”

i guess we have different dictionaries
To me, luxury pick would be taking a player at a position they don’t have a big need, just because they can…like KC taking an OLB, WR or CB (assuming they sign Bowe/Carr)

I guess it depends on where in the draft you take them.
How much you spend, rather than what you buy. Like, I used to eat $0.50 tacos in college, but now I can afford the “luxury” of a $1.25 taco supreme.
An expensive first round RT is a luxury because you always have the option to trade down and get a cheaper RT.

Not like they are that expensive any longer

Referring more to draft picks than money,
and the lost opportunity to draft someone else.

Well, I do agree with him that there will be better guards available later than tackles.

Nah, I am good with that. I would like to have Martin or Reiff in the first
and unless there is a crazy good prospect at another spot (Trent Richardson) that has fallen then tackle is the spot we need to be drafting.
Its easier to get a good guard in rds 2 on than it is to get a good tackle.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
In defense of the RT pick
Here’s the thing. Pro Football Focus had Barry Richardson ranked 76th out of 76 OT that they graded out last season. He ranked equally horrible in both run blocking and pass protection. There is no other place we need an upgrade more. There are very few good OT free agents on the market this year and if you wait until the second round you are taking a risk. Could someone like Z. Sanders be there and be an upgrade? Sure, they could, but I don’t want to POSSIBLY upgrade at RT. I want a sure fire upgrade. The other thing is that in today’s NFL with so many different formations on both sides of the ball the clear cut distinction of skills needed on the right and left side are blurring. I can make a strong case that adding a RT that will drastically upgrade both the run blocking and pass protection would benefit our offense more then any other spot other then QB.

But if Richardson is sooooo bad, then wouldn't a third rounder be a "sure fire" upgrade?
If Richardson is sooooooo bad, then it shouldn’t require a first round pick to upgrade him.

If you hit on your 3rd round pick, sure
Hence it being a risk. If Pioli feels 100% confident that he can get someone later that is a lock to be a solid starting NFL tackle as a rookie, then fine. I just think it’s too important. Plus, if you upgrade from worst to say 50th out of 76 then that isn’t going to upgrade your overall offense that much. If you upgrade from worst to top 25 then we should see some real improvement.

By the same token, going from the #40 to the #15 right tackle isn't going to change your offense that much.
And of course, there’s no such thing as 100% confidence in the draft. See GB’s and St. Louis’ recent tackle drafting efforts.

The reason other teams draft right tackles in the third round is because they aren't relying solely on that player to start the entire year.
I also don’t see why right tackle is that much less important than left tackle for us… I mean, face it, we’re probably going to have Cassel starting, and it doesn’t really matter if he sees the pressure or not, he’s just going to take a sack rather than risk throwing it to an open Bowe.
I don't understand that first sentence.
Denver’s, Oakland’s, and SD’s right tackles were drafted in the 2nd, 2nd, and 6th rounds.
The gratuitous Cassel hate doesn’t really deserve consideration. Just because the guy isn’t Manning doesn’t make him a total fool.

can we find our vince wilfork please? trade back and take the best nt or t available, id be content
Pay Brandon Carr/Romeo
Team Colquitt
I don't see him in this draft
I don’t buy the hype on Dontari Poe as a typical 3-4 NT. He looks more like a Albert Haynesworth body type to me. None of the other NT prospects have a first round grade in my opinion. Ta’amu from Washington is probably the closest and maybe Chapman from Alabama could be an option in the 3rd.

Agree on Poe. I don't trust big linemen from small schools, can't really evaluate them very well.
