One less 3-4 Defense
The one asset the Dolphins do have is depth in the front seven. They’ll need to reshuffle the lineup, but should be able to piece together a decent defensive line. The issue will be at linebacker. Karlos Dansby will return (at inside linebacker most likely), and Kevin Burnett may land in the starting lineup again by default (probably strong-side linebacker). However, the Dolphins will need to add another starter, preferably someone who is strong in coverage.
Depending on their confidence in Cameron Wake and Koa Misi’s ability to transition to defensive end, the Dolphins could target a pass rusher with their 1st-round pick. Nick Perry and Quinton Coples would be the most likely targets.
There is also an outside shot that the Dolphins could target Luke Kuechly with the 9th pick. The move would necessitate moving Dansby to outside linebacker, where he played early in his career with the Cardinals.

I thought they were gonna do a hybrid 4-3/3-4
Men succeed when they realize that their failures are the preparation for their victories.

I was just reading on the Bills site
they seem happy enough about the move but pissed that they wasted 2 years trying to get 3-4 guys

Why are they changing? Thats stupid..
As for the topic, idk if they’ll just let him walk. Ya they have starks, langford, and odrick but soliai is by far the best out of those. I guess it just depends who wants him more. $$$$

I would guess that they let him walk.
I dont think he fits their new scheme and they already franchised him last year. Doubt they do it again.

I thought they were just continuing to work their way towards (evolving) the 3-4?

Nope
Completely thrown out now.

Damn
Not saying I love it
but if the Bills got Coples and Curry, plus Dontari Poe, to go alongside Kyle Williams and Marcell Dareus, I think our d-line would be right up there with the Giants on the most feared fronts in the NFL.

Yes it would be one of the most feared fronts in the NFL
And the only 5 man front in the NFL.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
They might not let him walk but he might be too expensive to keep around.
Whether they need a huge body like that will depend how much over/under looks they plan on using in their 4-3
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
They're the ones that are "evolving"
Im guessing Pagano is going to collect 3-4 players over the next couple of offseasons to eventually get the personel he needs to run his defense and until then he’ll lean heavily on the 4-3 side of what he knows.

Good news for us.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
They did make one interesting point regards the 3-4 defense
getting killed by TE’s nowadays and that Belichick switched to the 4-3 cause he can kill 3-4’s with his tight-ends
You need a LB/S hybrid type player to deal with that.
Doesn’t really matter what the formation is.

Patriots Defense is supposed to be a 3-4
Each week during the season, the packages the Patriots are utilizing on defense have been charted, focusing on defensive backs.
With a package that has four defensive backs, that has been classified as base. With five or more defensive backs, that is referred to as a sub defense.
The Patriots leaned havier on the base D last Sunday in Denver against the Tim Tebow option attack. Of 29 snaps in the first half, 22 came out of base personnel. The numbers ended up evening out by the end of the game, as the Patriots played more sub in the second half after taking the lead.
Here is the Patriots’ season outlook when comparing the base vs. sub defense:
Sub — 608 of 987 (61.6 percent)
Base — 352 of 987 (35.6 percent)
Short-yardage — 27 of 987 (2.7 percent)

comment to question
MikeReiss-ESPNBoston
I’ll respectfully disagree. It shows how the 5th DB is more of a starter than the third LB. It shows how certain matchups prioritize the base over the sub. It also shows that in two of the three losses, it was heavily skewed toward the sub (so which playoff teams might present the same matchup problems?). A lot to digest here in my view.

if the patriots are a 3-4
then I don’t understand the 5th DB vs 3rd LB statement

Pats switched to a 4-3 with Albert and Wilfork
Have been playing more 3-4 looks lately, used it almost all game against the Broncs to contain Tebow

Houston should help us with that.
He can run with most TEs, gives us three LBs who can/should be able to man-cover TEs.

but not exactly cover him

I think Tamba's getting a lot better in zone.
He’ll eventually get better at pretty much anything you ask him to get better at.

Baltimore 3 – 4

Houston 3 – 4
Kansas City 3 – 4
NY Jets 3 – 4
Pittsburgh 3 – 4
San Diego 3 – 4
San Francisco 3 – 4
Washington 3 – 4
so still 22 teams that are not a 3-4 then

Baltimore 3 - 4 - Is Baltimore also a 4-3 Ngata/McPhee/Cody played 1600+ snaps combined
Dallas 3 – 4 – Ratliff
Green Bay 3 – 4 – Raji
NY Jets 3 – 4 – Pouha
San Diego 3 – 4 – Garay
San Francisco 3 – 4 – Sopoaga
Washington 3 – 4 – Cofield
Stated need for a 3-4 Nose Tackle
Houston 3 – 4
Kansas City 3 – 4
Pittsburgh 3 – 4

And some of those 3-4s are not like the others.
Wade will be looking for a one-gapper. Is Dallas gonna continue with the one-gap since Wade left?

Ratliff is a stud
I don’t think the Cowboys plan to do anything but ride what he does best.
checking on Houston
I would peg Myers’ new deal in the neighborhood of 5-years for $25-30 million dollars with $18-20 million guaranteed. The center formerly known as Ragdoll will get his raise, his important guaranteed total, and Houston avoids breaking the cap and locking themselves in a bad deal since Myers should be effective into his mid-30s, as most top centers (Kevin Mawae, Jeff Saturday, and Olin Kuertz being recent examples) have shown to be.
got sidetracked :)

Ravens are definitely a 4-3
They did an article on it on PFF about it, I can’t find the exact one, but this one talks about Suggs as a DE:

That is just the subpackages, like Tamba
Stands up in the base, but becomes a DE in 4 man fronts. Ravens have the players to run a lot of 3 man fronts, taking a DT out and adding in another DB.

David Molk Center Michigan
Yeah, I get that to an extent. I mean, he wouldn’t be a good choice for a team like St. Louis or the Saints. At the same time, Jason Brown would not be a good fit for the Texans. Molk will probably weigh 290 at the combine and (I’m guessing) measure a shade under 6-2. That’s not too far off of Ryan Kalil, iirc.
Besides, even admitting that I am incredibly biased here, two things jump out at me: 1. He won the award for best center in the country. 2. Despite playing in the same conference with Konz, Brewster, Reilly Reiff, and Kevin Zeitler, it was Molk who was named the best OL (not just the best center) in the B1G. That’s quite a two-fer right there.
All that said, I’d be fine with Houston taking him in the third, and I’d be livid if he were there in the fourth and we passed on him.
I have not yet begun to defile myself.

The Chiefs will not have improved their interior if they acquire yet another undersized player
Hudson is nearly 20 lbs heavier than Wiegmann, but not all that much bigger than Lilja (if at all). Wiegmann and Lilja have big problems with beefy noses. The Chiefs need to bring in an athletic but big guard. This might hamper some of their zone blocking, but will almost certainly improve their ability in the middle. Dominate from the inside out.
It's not all about how much a guy weighs, Weigs was slow this year, and Lilja had his own issues
If the new guy knows leverage, his assignments, then he should be able to work.

Speaking of this
Will Muir continue the ZBS build under the NEW OC?
The Patriots did not run a ZBS, maybe that was all Haley
I'm thinking it WAS Haley ... if I recall (and I might not be correct) not just that but some kind of "modified" thing
maybe (?)
