Chiefs Hire Special Teams Coach; Part Ways With Three Others
We have some actual Kansas City Chiefs coaching news.
Just not the offensive coordinator (yet).
The Chiefs announced they've hired Tom McMahon to coach special teams. McMahon comes from the St. Louis Rams where he was the special teams coordinator the last three seasons. Here's an interview from last November with the Chiefs new special teams coach.
Prior to the Chiefs, McMahon was in St. Louis and before that two years with the Atlanta Falcons. He was also on the Louisville staff as well as Utah State.
McMahon's hire also means Steve Hoffman, the previous special teams coach, is out. The Chiefs announced he has not been retained.
And in more Chiefs coaching news, two more coaches are not coming back: receivers coach Richie Anderson and assistant offensive line coach Pat Perles were not retained. It had been previously rumored that they were on their way out.

Sounds promising.
McMahon joins the Chiefs after a three-year stint (2009-11) in St. Louis where he served as special teams coordinator for the Rams. In 2010, the Rams had the league’s third-best net punting average at 40.0 yards per punt. Additionally, McMahon’s primary punt returner, Danny Amendola, led the NFL with 12 returns of 20-plus yards in 2009 and 2010 combined.

EB should return punts
Just a thought.

Why?
We had the 3rd best PR in the league without breaking any long ones and with a coach who sucked at return strategy. Berry doesn’t need more snaps.

Not only that.
Arenas was one of the best returners in collegiate history, and he’s done a great job considering he’s had very little blocking.

I'd rather have
Steve Breaston returning than Eric Berry
That's a good thought
and Steve has said he’d like the opportunity to do it every once in awhile.

What about McCluster?
It makes much more sense to have him as a part time return specialist than to see him continue to struggle coming out of the backfield. Keep Breaston in the slot where he can do some real damage. The McCluster experiment in the backfield should be over with Charles returning, Jones and Battle backing him up. If we’re not willing to slot him out as originally thought and make him our Wes Welker.

You'd think you'd want an offensive guy returning punts rather than a defensive guy
because he’d be more rested for it. But Arenas is so good at it that it’d be hard to replace him.

Yep, I really like what I've seen from Javier
and have wished for awhile now they’d try some different blocking schemes. They weren’t able to spring one since Dex’s in the 2010 opener and I’m pretty sure it isn’t because of the lack of speed or elusiveness of our returners.
by Chief Willie Wildcat on Jan 30, 2012 2:39 PM CST up reply actions
how can we all come together and convince Romeo to try out Javier at RB?
Arenas knows ho to make people miss. Draft another DB to take over a lot of his role on defense, and give him ten or twelve carries a game.

Good to see.
A lot of people were saying that Hoffman is one of the better ST coaches in the league and that he should stay. However, it certainly didn’t show on game day. Way too many penalties, not enough production on returns, and of course who could forget the Seymour debacle of 2012?

Arenas was the best in the AFC in returns. Kickoffs is a whole different story with every kick essentially being a touchback.
I was talking about blocking
Arenas did a good job but it seems like he always has to break 2 tackles to even get 5 yards.

Hoffman's specialty is kickers and coverage
And he’s done a great job with our kickers and our coverage unit is one of the better ones in the league. But this team needs better return numbers especially on kickoffs because if Cassel is the QB then we need field position.

I was unaware they had let Hoffman go, but now that I see they’ve essentially announced it with the hiring of McMahon, then I’m all good.
I’m glad to see they went in a different direction. Hopefully now we can see some returns and a lot fewer ST’s SNAFU’s.

If I'm reading those numbers right,
St. Louis was really hurt in the punting category, where we have an advantage just because of our punter. We also did better than they did in FG/XP, again I think because we have a better individual player. But then, they didn’t really do much different than we did in the return categories, which is where we need to improve, so /shrug.

I was kinda hoping they’d find a way to keep Hoffman as a kicking coach. But I guess he’s too respected and young in his career to take a demotion and stay with the same team. He’ll probably find a job somewhere pretty fast.
I am encouraged by the changes in the offensive assistant positions, might mean that an as-yet-unannounced OC is already giving his input on assistant coaches.

But a change needed to be made. The lack of blocking was a repeated problem throughout the year, and came to a fulcrum against Oakland in a bad way. We have three rock-solid specialists, and now the scheming and training for the rest of the ST unit needs to get whipped into shape.
