Derrick Johnson Scores In The 2012 Pro Bowl

The 2012 Pro Bowl was about what you thought it would be -- very little defense, lots of offense and a game that's barely watchable. At least that's what I expected.

The one highlight from the game (that Kansas City Chiefs fans care about) came when Derrick Johnson scored a touchdown.

Cam Newton and the NFC lined up around the 44 yard line and Newton, after avoiding the sack, threw up a bomb, which was intercepted by San Diego Chargers S Eric Weddle around the 13 yard line. He returned it to about the 37 yard line before tossing it back to DJ on a lateral.

DJ took the ball and rumbled all the way the down field, ziggging when the opponents thought he would zag and zagging when they thought would zig, and brought it in the for the touchdown.

That's about as exciting as I can make a play in the Pro Bowl sound.

Here's the video of DJ's touchdown.

Why bother playing?

Im sorry, but that was terrible, and a joke .they just as well played flag football instead.why bother to play period.I will never watch it again.

Got in late, joined the game already in progress.

Turned it on just in time to see Rivers throw an INT in the end zone.

And maybe 2 plays after that – that was about all I could stand before going off to do other things.

Honestly, practices are more entertaining to watch. To each their own, and kudos to anyone that finds the Pro Bowl entertaining.

But it’s just not for me.

It's no fun if I have to explain it.

The thing is, I understand why the players approach it the way they do

I can’t remember the last game I watched where someone didn’t at least get a LITTLE injury, and generally half a dozen guys go down on every team every year at the very least.

You can’t take that risk in a totally meaningless game.

So what is there to do besides either eliminate the Pro Bowl as an actual game, or make it worth something to teams?

Honestly I'm down with just removing it.

Keep all-pro team as a nice honorary title / achievement for your accomplishments.

Maybe an event akin to the home rune derby for MLB. A non-game thing (NHL does it too, and NBA slam dunk / 3-point competitions) – that fans can enjoy with tests of skills from their favorite players and all that.

But football is too much of a physical game. When they water it down (and they have to) to this point, it’s just not any fun to watch. It’s less entertaining than the old MTV Rock’N’Jock basketball games. At least those had a few under-the-breath chuckles.

It's no fun if I have to explain it.

I agree

The game was a farce. The fans there were even booing. The defenses really did nothing…or less for the most part. I say cancel the game, have a skills competition or something. The game is just silly.

It sure is hard to polish that turd

Congrats to DJ though.

Seems like Tamba had a quiet night though. Hope they both had a good time in Hawaii.

by cheapham on Jan 30, 2012 8:41 AM CST reply actions

Tamba was used a 4-3 OLB

Those games are geared towards offenses, defenses have to play vanilla 4-3.

And the way Tamba plays is absolutely violent

I’m willing to bet he kept it tame to avoid breaking someone’s leg on accident like in GB…

Yeah its boring

Vanilla 4-3 defense, easy coverages, players not playing the correct position(like Tamba playing LB out there), no one cares about the game.. even the guys playing haha

I started to watch it,

Then noticed the players were wearing flags. And watched Champ get burned time after time. Just proves Popularity contest. I also hated how Hali looked like he’s never played the game before, since they can’t blitz .What a joke of a game all around. Pro Bowl is a disgrace to the NFL .Man up, and play some real ball, or just stop, it all together.

They would really be scared to get hurt in the season

Bad idea.

You want guys getting hurt in an exhibition game, in the middle of the season?

Yes

They moved it to the week before because we are still in football mode because and Roger figured since we are in such anticipation of the SB that we will watch 3 hours of flag football.

was really worried by my girl's level of interest in the ProBowl

Give me an expanded skills challenge and maybe a basketball game. I’d like to see Jimmy Graham get balled on by Tony G. A bball game would be way more competative than what we get now.

Before Roger took over didn't they use to have skills contest leading up to the PB?

I remember one year someone messing his knee up playing beach flag football

Those were fun to watch

And it would’ve been interesting watching Cassel go against other Pro Bowlers last year…

I have this feeling he wouldn’t have done well…

Why not make it a flag game

Instead of a stadium, they Play on a playground with sticks marking the endzones. No pads. Make it a pick up game with NFL stars. That’s basically what it is anyway.

Dear God man! Flag football is waaaaaay more dangerous than the Pro Bowl

I am hoping they make it a slow pitch softball game. Like a company picnic.

Wow you people are hilarious

You do realize its the pro bowl and not thE super bowl right? What do you expect with those kinds of rules? Of course it would be flag football but thats not a bad thing, I dont want anybody to get hurt basking in the moment that most do deserve. Especially with the football season over.

I for one enjoyed it, AFC won, DJ got a TD, everybody is laughin and having fun. Some moments were boring but its not like anything else is on, and its the last bit of football left for months and i got to see the biggest stars of football doing what they love most.

Me and Matt Cassel just - you up, dog!
