4 Free Agents The Chiefs Would Be Smart To Pursue

Doc4c8ff29552282477537867_medium

With The 2012 Free Agency right around the corner, I realized that This Off Season is one of the most important Off Seasons the Chiefs have had in a while. The Chiefs are a couple of good signings and draft picks away from stepping up to the next level. Here are 5 Free Agents that can take the Chiefs to the next level:

Star-divide

1. Ryan Grant RB - Ryan Grant of the Green Bay Packers would be a perfect fit for the Chiefs. He would be able to share carries with Jamaal Charles, just how Thomas Jonesdid, in 2012. He can catch passes out of the Backfield, run between the Tackles, and if Charles were to get hurt again, they would have somebody who would be able to carry the load. Grant will also most likely be leaving Green Bay, because, now 2nd year RB James Starks, seems like he can be the Packers long term at answer at that position. With Jamaal Charles, Ryan Grant, Dexter Mccluster, and Jackie Battle, they would have by far the most dominant running game in the NFL.

2. Cliff Avril DE - Cliff Avril, an explosive pass rusher who had 11 sacks this year with the Lions, in an explosive pass rusher who would be able to strongly compliment Tamba Hali and Justin Houston in the pass rush. He may be the Lions best pass rusher, but he is expected to not be their top priority for the Lions Offensive minded staff. Signing Avril would really Put the Chiefs pass rush over the top, and that would also allow them to deal Glenn Dorsey or Tyson Jackson for more draft picks.

3. Demetrious Bell OT - Demterious Bell from Buffalo is a very underrated pass protector, and also makes a huge impact on the running game. When you have as good as a running game that the Chiefs may have next year, it's important to have an offensive line that can block for the running backs. With Bell replacing Richardson, and Rodney Hudson replacing Casey Weigman, the Chiefs would have a fairly young offensive line, and a good one too.

4. Peyton Manning QB- If you've read my previous article (Here) you knew that this was coming. With reports coming out that the Colts have decided to cut ties with Peyton Manning, there's just a better chance that he may end up in Kansas City, instead of re-stating my reasons on my Manning would come to KC, you can read my article above.

Yes, There are a lot of different players who would bring the Chiefs to the next level, which is Super Bowl Contenders, but we know that Scott Pioli's philosophy is not to go signing big name free agents left and right. But if the Chiefs signed these 4 players, they would already have one of the best rosters (with no injuries) in the AFC, and then they would also be able to take the best player available with their 11th/12th overall draft pick. Leave your comments, thoughts, and Players you would like to see the Chiefs pursue this free agency in the comment section! Go Chiefs!!!!!!!

So you're saying

Cliff Avril for DE or OLB? Don’t think he would fit as an end in the 3-4 unless your talking as a 3rd down package guy

by pocha444444 on Jan 29, 2012 12:38 AM CST reply actions

people need to stop pitching Cliff Avril to us

It just wont work. he’s strictly a 4-3 DE. Far too light to even remotely be considered a 3-4 DE. We’d have no use for him as a OLB as we already have a rush OLB in Hali.

KC Draft prediction: No OT taken in first round

You would think the Lions might want to start fixing their defense soon.

If it wasn’t for the accursed paycheck, would I really imprison myself in this dungeon of the human soul?

I keep having to tell people this as well

It’s bordering on ridiculousness. Avril would in no way replace either T-Jax or Dorsey. Essentially you would be converting a career 4-3 DE to OLB in an expensive experiment to take playing time away from Tamba Hali and Justin Houston. It’s not happening people move on!

Bell maybe ... the others I woldn't bother with ... ESPECIALLY Manning

I’m sure everyone knows all the “usual objections” so I won’t list them here

sorry, can't imagine it's a "smart" thing to gp after Avril ... he's not at all good against the run (more of a liability) ... yes, great in rushing the passer but it still doesn't stop the run

Grant is almost 30 and very unimpressive, might as well just keep Battle for less money … Bell seems to have had some health issues (knees) … he’s young, but …

seems we’d be setting the bar pretty low with any of these guys … if we go after FA’s I’d prefer we go after the best (nothing personal, Peyton, but you really should hang ‘em up before you get seriously hurt … you’re always SuperManning to me, but please, don’t risk it)

Hey Ups

If Manning does come here, and leads us to the Super Bowl, you aren’t allowed to watch.

Bell and Bush

Grant is either hurt or not productive

I'm not sure why people keep saying Bell is a good run blocker.

I know a couple of the sites listing Free Agents has stated that but none of them are that reputable. There’s a reason why Bell is going to be available and really would a team as needy as Buffalo let a great run and pass blocker go if that was the case? Bell is the opposite of Barry Richardson. He can pass block but can’t run block all that well.

yeah, their OL hasnt exactly been stellar

Not sure why other teams would envy their guys…or why they’d let good ones walk

yah, these 4 guys aren't the only ones in the FA talent pool

Speaking of FA

we could use a new FA thread bumped up to the top? Can’t seem to find the old one anymore although admittedly I am selectively blind.

wow, didn't notice that but yeah, it IS gone ... odd that, if it was me I'd have pulled the last Draft Thread

that FA thread was slow enough, not overly filled up … surprising but nice

Actually, they had an incredible O-line before the injuries.

But it was mainly the interior with Urbik and Levitre. Bell and Pears were part of it, but the inside guys were the crew really blasting open holes for Freddy J.

I like 2 of the 4

cliff and manning they can help I don’t know about the other 2 better to get those in the draft of other FA for OL maybe C.Nicks

Decent list!

But, I dont see the need of getting Cliff Avril when we have an up and coming pass rusher in Justin Houston. And I think Demetrious Bell is awful.

I’d love to have Ryan Grant and Peyton Manning though,
If the Chiefs signed Manning I would blow up in excitement

3 Chiefs Wishes:
1. Draft Trent Richardson in the 2012 NFL Draft
2. Sign Dwayne Bowe to a long-term deal
3. Keep Brandon Carr and Leron McClain

by bigbosschief on Jan 29, 2012 11:00 AM CST reply actions

Meh, can't see any of these guys in KC.

We already have a beastly LT in Albert and Demetrius is solely a pass-blocker (he’s strictly and LT, not and RT).
Ryan Grant gets hurt too much for being the workhorse half of our running tandem, and is a fumbling machine. Besides, he doesn’t run physically enough to really wear down a defense. I’m ok with Battle for now, or a RB in draft, or possibly a guy like Jason Snelling, Peyton Hillis, or Brandon Jacobs. I’d be down with using Le’Ron as a runner more, as well.
Cliff Avril doesn’t fit here. Not fast enough as a OLB in our system (besides, we already have a Top 3 Pass-rusher in Hali and a rising star in Justin Houston), and too small and weak for DE. Not a good fit.
Manning costs a LOT. I realize he would obviously help, he’s probably got a year or two left for a team that really only needs an elite QB to lead them to a Super Bowl and he could help develop Stanzi, but he is SOOOOOO expensive!

by NigerianNightmare on Jan 29, 2012 12:21 PM CST reply actions

My 4 would be

Leron McClain
John Carlson
Cory Redding
Kareem McKenzie

"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"

by GenericBrand on Jan 29, 2012 1:04 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

One of the Chiefs big advantages of maybe getting Manning, is that he will want to go somewhere where he can win. In my opinion, these are the teams who have a chance at Manning.
Chiefs, Dolphins, Cardinals, Redskins, Browns, and the Bucs. I would include the Raiders or Broncos, but the Raiders are now committed to Palmer, and I don’t see the Broncos getting him because Manning wouldnt want to be in the Tebow drama.
Since Manning wants to go somewhere to win, he wouldn’t want to go to Miami, because he’d be playing Tom Brady and the patriots twice, and he’d have to beat them to get in the playoffs most likely. The Cardinals in the NFC North are convincing, but Manning would have to beat out the 49ers to have a better chance at the Super Bowl, and that’s unlikely for the Cards. The Browns have no running game or receiving weapons, and they also have the steelers bengals and ravens in the division. For the Redskins, he’d have an older receiving corp and only a decent running game, in a tough division with the Eagles Giants and Cowboys. Then again it would be interesting to play his brother twice a year! Then, the Bucs. They play in warm weather, and have a good running game with Legarrete Blount, the only thing keeping him from going there would be a bad receiving corp, and he’d be playing in the same division as the Saints. Manning wants to win. So he wouldn’t play in the same division as Brady, Brees, Rothlesburger and the good Ravnes Defense, and the 49ers defense.
Ahhhhhh! Then comes the Chiefs. The Chiefs have a young, good defense, a great receiving group with Bowe, Baldwin, Breaston, and Moeaki. And a great running game, assuming Jamaal Charles comes back healthy, which he is supposed to. Also, they may add another Running back, or maybe anther WR who’s familiar with Manning in Pierre Garçon or Reggie Wayne if Bowe isn’t re-signed. And most importantly, the Chiefs play in the worst division inthe Nfl by far. There is not
a team to be afraid of in the AFC west, and there’s not a team that the Chiefs can’t beat with ease.
That’s why I think Peyton Manning would have some interest in coming to Kansas City

Charles, Mccluster, Moeaki, Bowe, Breaston, Baldwin, DJ, Berry, Flowers, Carr= Super Bowl Bound.
