Kansas City defensive backs coach Emmitt Thomas – Dennis Allen’s mentor – could be a possibility for defensive coordinator.

Bill Williamson

This is one thing that we haven't really discussed too much. What happens if the Kansas City Chiefs lose some successful pieces of the staff to other teams?

Would Emmitt Thomas go work for his former protege?
Are there any other current Chiefs coaches that would be of interest to any of these freshly hired NFL coaches?

He does great work with this secondary, I don't really want anyone else back there teaching Eric Berry.

If he goes to Oakland because Romeo wants to have two roles that will be pretty disappointing to me. Though I don’t want the Chiefs to give any member a promotion just because… I do think it would be better to promote Emmitt to DC if it means keeping him in the organization long term.

He has earned it with his work in Kansas City IMO.

would you promote him just to keep him?

yeah, I’d love him to stay, but whatever’s best for him, you know?

Outside of just like him because he is a Kansas City Chiefs living legend,

I also feel that he is a top candidate for the promotion, and that is why he might leave.

He has earned a matching offer at the very least. Especially if the Chiefs plan on not filling the spot…As pointed out below Ups… Money talks. He has really impressed me with his work with the secondary, Herman Edwards gets the bulk of the credit, but Emmitt Thomas has taught these guys very well.

The improvements that Brandon Carr has made since 2009 have been really remarkable.

sometimes I wonder how they would do that chalk outline, if you pushed someone into a tree chipper.

Saw this yesterday

Although I dont believe he’ll leave a team he’s been with his whole NFL career, and how he was bred to despise the Raiders but crazier things have happened

but as a coach he's been all over
  1. St. Louis Cardinals (1981-1985) (Assistant coach)
  2. Washington Redskins (1986-1994) (WR and DB coach)
  3. Philadelphia Eagles (1995-1998) (Defensive coordinator)
  4. Green Bay Packers (1999) (Defensive coordinator)
  5. Minnesota Vikings (2000-2001) (Defensive coordinator)
  6. Atlanta Falcons (2002-2009) (Assistant Head Coach and DB Coach)
  7. Atlanta Falcons (2007) (Interim Head Coach)

look at Art Shell … lifelong Raider, eventually Raider Head coach TWICE, with a stop as assistant in … yup, Kansas City in between those Raider gigs

happens all the time

Here's my question...

Is his contract up? Last thing I remember this would be a lateral move according to the rules which could only happen if the Chiefs allowed it.

by Bsketbal52 on Jan 27, 2012 5:42 PM CST reply actions

If he wants the job, how do you not allow it?

If an employee wants to go, you aren’t doing anybody any good by preventing it.

by Idahochief on Jan 27, 2012 5:52 PM CST up reply actions

Beyond that I can see why he would want the job.

There is a good chance he would be head coach by mid season the way that organization is ran.

Teams prevent lateral moves all the time.

But it’s doubtful they’d get in the way of a promotion.

Why the heck do other teams want our coaches/executives?

Last time I checked, the Chiefs haven’t won a playoff game since 1994.
