Who Should Be The Chiefs Starting QB in 2012?

Between Arrowhead Pride and Twitter, Chiefs quarterback talk has been lighting up my timeline. There are certainly divided, or should I say undecided camps amongst fans. I think the only conclusion one can draw is that fans don't want to see Matt Cassel as the starter in 2012. However, what if he were the starter with a young Robert Griffin III sitting on the bench to hone his craft? Folks on twitter are upset that they're seeing talks of Peyton Manning going to the Jets, or the Dolphins, or even the Cardinals, but not a word of him going off to Kansas City. Then there's the thread discussing Steven St. John's interview with Jeff Chadiha of ESPN where most folks are definitely in the Kyle Orton over Matt Cassel camp. One thing I do think is certain, Ricky Stanzi, and due to the structure of his contract, Matt Cassel, will be on the Chiefs roster come training camp in late July.

Star-divide

We should and probably will have a third quarterback on the roster. You know Pioli is going to make a move somewhere, we haven't had less than three quarterbacks on the roster since his arrival. I do think it's pretty safe to say Tyler Palko will not be invited to camp. So who is it going to be?

Currently, I'll go with one of the two guys under contract right now

Cassel or Stanzi.

Any other player is conjecture and not worth speculating about until they sign that contract with the arrowhead at the top

I'm so overrated, I'm underrated.

They'll have at least three QBs in camp.

The only question is whether that third one is starting or bench material, or even PS material.

If Chiefs move up to get RGIII, he's starting right away.

I can’t see him sitting a year and…(laughing uncontrollably)…..learning under Casshole for a year.

by craig in calgary on Jan 26, 2012 3:47 PM CST reply actions

Cassel does have some intangibles

there’s more than stepping back and throwing that a rookie has to learn to become a pro.

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Jan 26, 2012 3:49 PM CST up reply actions

That being said

It’ll be Casshole starting, some scrub like Bruce Gradkowski or Cade McCown backing him up, Stanzi will be undressed most of the year. Win between 6-9 games, and repeat the following year, ruining our best players elite years.

by craig in calgary on Jan 26, 2012 3:50 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

That would suck

BTW, I don’t have a problem with them kicking the rookie right into the fire, but I can see where they’d sit him a bit to learn the offense and his teammates a bit.

Nobody at 1 Arrowhead drive will be making a play for RGIII . The quicker we move on from that the better. Its like the fans that were somehow still hoping we made the playoffs after we lost to Oakland.

Agreed. It probably requires another 1st round pick and possibly a player trade. I don’t think we can maintain our level of success, at least from 2010, without any of our current starters.

Cassel won't win us games, but he wont lose them

With Charles/TonyM/Bowe/Baldwin/Breason, an upgraded Oline

Berry back on D with Flowers/Carr/Lewis on the backend with Hali and Houston bringing pressure

Yeah this would be the best team Matt has had, and a team that could carry him. That is the problem though, we need a Qb who could carry THE team if need be, not fold and throw an int on a screen pass…

and I think people are focusing too much on a statistical comparison while ignoring the physical abilities of each QB.
"Nothing against (Palko) or (Cassel), man, just — Kyle is a new beast out there with us," fullback Le’Ron McClain said. "He ran the whole game on the sideline, coming to us on certain plays, telling us in the huddle — boom, boom, ‘Just get open for me right here.’ "

\

A quote likes that goes beyond stats and point towards Orton have a much better grasp of whats going on and what we are trying to do in addition to the ability to execute both in the game and on the sideline .

As Ive said all along Matt is a good QB but Orton is much further ahead of him in his development even though Matt actually is older than Orton .We lose Matts athleticism but would gain Ortons deep ball ability as well .

More on Stanzi because Orton can go wherever, no restrictions. Stanzi has potential.

and I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that you’ve seen a lot of Stanzi to make the conclusion he has potential. However, none of us have really seen what his potential is at the pro level. I for one would like to see, but I can also see where he’s a career backup, just getting passed over for the next big thing.

The answer...sort of...

Tag Bowe, trade Bowe for multiple picks next year, draft Alshon Geffrey, take qb next year after our o-line has come around, if Stanzi doesn’t pan out.

KC Draft prediction: No OT taken in first round

by trentchiefsfan on Jan 26, 2012 7:59 PM CST reply actions

What has Stanzi got

How about this? Sign Orton and let him and Cassel compete for the starting job. Then sometime in the first 4-6 games, when they both have proven that the difference in how much they both suck isn’t very much, we put in Stanzi. We have to know if he can be the man to quarterback this team into the future. If Pioli and Crennel like what they see, great. If not, we will be in position to get one of the top qb’s in next years draft. At some point Stanzi is gonna have to get out there. Unless, of course our coach and GM have already decided that he isnt the guy, which may well be the case consideringthere has been absolutely no vote of confidence from either of them

by mumbles92054 on Jan 26, 2012 10:55 PM CST reply actions

Tyler Palko should start all 16 games

That way we would have the first draft pick and get the best QB next draft. There going to start Casshole and he is going to suck again.

A defense thats fixin to be top 5. Weapons out the yin yang.Draft trent richardson 1st round.NT in second and sign nicks the pro bowl guard from NO and the Chiefs are a seriuos thret to win the super bowl.

by J ray on Jan 27, 2012 4:15 AM CST reply actions

I agree

I heard ESPN saying he doesn’t want a team to have to trade multiple picks for him. So I guess he is not going to push back his bonus date and I think force the colts cut him. If he is cut and another team goes after him then is his old contract (pay structure) void? So then you can deal a whole new one? Either way if you can go after him without giving up picks, KC needs to be extremely aggressive.

by MidMo Chiefs Fan on Jan 27, 2012 7:37 AM CST up reply actions

We don't keep both Cassel or Orton.

But draft another QB like Wheeden third day of the draft. Stanzi worries me as a backup if he cannot beat out Palko. Wheeden could be the backup and capable of starting if Cassel or Orton get hurt.

by Mustang fever on Jan 27, 2012 7:50 AM CST reply actions

Stanzi has the arm strength

you do have to cut him some slack with the lack of off season. Palko had been in the offense two full season and Stanzi only had essentially 5 months to catch up.

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Jan 27, 2012 9:03 AM CST up reply actions

why wouldn't we or couldn't we keep both Cassel and Orton?

Noone says much about Russell Wilson

That guy is good, and plays with a lot of energy. Someone that would be a great backup to come in with a lot of ‘umph’ when the time calls.

Orton is just below a top tier QB, and given a year in a solid O, he might crack the ice. I’m not sure I get why he’s considered so mediocre, unless people are relying too much on his beginning years with some bad receivers. Trends definitely put him in a good light.

This is a fucking stupid poll

Yep, I’m being a troll. But no more than the guy who wrote this inane poll. The Chiefs have a PRO BOWL quarterback under contract. And yet there is NO option in the poll allowing them to keep him and use their draft choices for other purposes.

by Dagda on Jan 28, 2012 11:44 AM CST reply actions

Arrowhead Pride has not distinguished itself by the quality of its polls. That's true.

My best guess is that KC gives up their next 4 first round picks for RGlll who, Thomas Jones decides, needs a little “attitude adjustment”.

With RGlllll sidelined for the season with multiple broken hands, Cassel becomes the first Chiefs QB to win a playoff game since Montana. The 2013 offseason kicks off with multiple polls that force the participant to kick Cassell to the curb.

If it wasn’t for the accursed paycheck, would I really imprison myself in this dungeon of the human soul?
