Stripping for Action
via lh6.ggpht.com
The Kansas City Chiefs have two problems. A lack of depth and a lack at QB. The Indianapolis Colts just signed a brand new Head Coach in Chuck Pagano, a Defensive minded secondary trained hybrid running coach. Will he continue the Colts 4-3 Defense or look to switch to a 3-4 defense and/or a hybrid. What are the Colts needs just in the 4-3 Defense:
Defense
Cornerback*
4-3 DT*
4-3 DE
4-3 OLB
FS
SS
Should we strip what depth we have for that elusive Franchise QB? Or build that depth for a different Franchise QB at some future time?
via imgs.sfgate.com
What would it cost?
Trade Chart
1st overall - 3000
11th - 1250
12th - 1200
Chiefs deficit - 1750-1800 points
Resources
Chiefs 2nd round pick
43 - 470
44 - 460
2013 - 1st - 1000 points
So trading our 2012 1st and 2nd would add up to 1710-1670 of value and we get back a 1st to select Luck. Add in the 2013 1st round pick of approximately 1000 points in value and we have a deficit of just 290-330 points in value.
We could throw in another pick or throw in a player that Indianapolis could use in their rebuild.
Trade Fodder
Some of these guys would hurt if we lost them, yet a QBOTF is going to make it much easier to Digest. We are eventually going to burn a 1st on a QB. Whether it is 2012 or 2013....

can't see it happening, Steve ... esp not that cheaply
I mean really, we’re not that far off from being ready to go … 1 or 2 in FA and a GOOD draft, re-sign our own guys and we SHOULD have this division locked up for most of the decade
if we trade away draft picks right and left and have a “fire sale” just for one guy, it’s almost like gutting the building to do a remodel job and having little leftover to do it with

Dorsey, Cassel and Bowe + our 1st for thier 1st
then get one of the many FA recievers to replace Bowe, start Bailey in Dorseys place and draft a RT in the second round (theres a few good ones valued in the 2nd) pick up OG in FA, keep reloading DL and depth in the draft…..betcha thought I forgot about Cassel, not.
We cannot trade Bowe
unless we re-sign him first.
IF the Colts cut loose Manning they have 28 Million dollars in cap to pay other players.
Happily the Chiefs also have close to 30 Million dollars in cap to spend too.
So with fewer needs and just as much money to spend, we could go all in in 2012
by Steve_Chiefs on Jan 25, 2012 6:12 PM CST up reply actions
yeah but ...
if we trade Bowe we have one less #1 WR for WHOMEVER to throw to … and if we trade out top picks we have less elite talent to protect WHOMEVER … and if WHOMEVER doesn’t work out we have awhile to wait to correct the situation
see what I mean?

The Status quo is barely keeping us Playoff calibre
by Steve_Chiefs on Jan 25, 2012 6:23 PM CST up reply actions
I totally disagree
There is no status quo…the franchise has shown continued improvement since Pioli and Haley came. Adding Romeo was huge. Adding Breaston was huge. The last 15 guys on our roster are better than the ones there 3 years ago
We are barely playoff calibre because we had to climb out of a deep hole…but we are still climbing
Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl
Cassel will keep us perpetually a near playoff calibre team
by Steve_Chiefs on Jan 25, 2012 7:56 PM CST up reply actions
We don't need to be San Fran to win in this weak-ass division
We can certainly make the playoffs with Cassel, continued defensive improvement (I see no reason why we DONT improve with a full offseason), and a good running game.
Hell, we couldn’t have beat the Steelers withOUT that running game and all the holes.
Top 10 defense and another trip to the playoffs!

Build the team first...
and we will be a qb away…like the Jets, or Ravens. I’d rather sign Orton, build the o-line where it gives him “Brady” time, and watch us score 30 a game.

we could wait for 2013 and hope that a QB we like is there or simply reach out and make it happen now.

Romeo only signed for 3 years that theory creates confusion and chaos .
Why signed Romeo if we are gonna take a qb that is gonna take years to develop ?
Why keep Matt for one year if we are only gonna start all over next year by taking a rookie in which would create a situation where would have to decide to extend or allow Romeo to be a lame duck coach based on the play of a rookie QB ?
Give Romeo the QB he wants if its Orton so be it and then you play out the three years and draft a QB that coincides with whatever new coach we bring in after Romeo .
by Willie Beamon on Jan 26, 2012 12:44 AM CST up reply actions
Until the O-Line is fixed it will not matter WHO the QB is.
Orton, Cassel, Manning, Luck, RGIII….they will ALL be running for their lives with our current O-Line. THAT is why I would let Orton walk, draft G / T in this years draft, let Cassel get beat up until the line has time to ‘gel’.
Once the O-Line is DONE, then we can trade the farm to move up and get a “Franchise QB”.
by DivineGrace on Jan 26, 2012 12:53 AM CST up reply actions
Willie has a good point though
We are going to force Romeo to start a rookie in his 2nd year of a three year contract

do you think that guy is going to want to lose money by having both his clients vying for the same job?
by Steve_Chiefs on Jan 25, 2012 6:27 PM CST up reply actions
Interesting...
Maybe we should cut Cassel now. What is the worst that can happin’, we start Stanzi. Trade Cassel for a TE…
yep, I heard it here in a thread
Since Wichard’s passing, many of his former clients have found new homes with different agencies. Calais Campbell signed with Ben Dogra and Tom Condon of CAA. As did Antonio Cromartie. Jamaal Anderson switched to Lagardere Unlimited. Now Jimmy Clausen has finally changed agencies, and has selected David Dunn of Athletes First. Other quarterbacks represented by Athletes First include Kyle Orton, Mark Sanchez, Matt Schaub, Aaron Rodgers, Chad Henne, Carson Palmer, Matt Cassel, and Matt Hasselbeck – quite a list.

Unconditional Guarantee...
I Andrew Luck, AKA, “The chosen one”, hearby guarantee all those considering taking me #1 to never get injured, always perform at an elite level regardless of those around me, and bring you the glory of a S.B.
Sincerely, Andrew Lottsa Luck
I would absolutely throw a try at the Colts for this
I would want to keep Bowe, but if its him or a franchise QB, the answer is obvious.
However, the Colts chances of giving away Luck is much lower than them giving up Peyton. I think one of two things happens in Indy: they keep Peyton, at least this season, and draft Luck, or they release Peyton (or Peyton retires), and they draft Luck.
I just can’t envision a scenario of them not drafting Luck

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
I can agree
But the clock is running now on Pag’s head coaching career.
A QB is not the only position of need for the Colts. The New GM also has the clock ticking and a QB without a team looks like the 2010 Colts.
It very well might cost more but Scotty better check out what it would take. That actually is his Primary Task after all
by Steve_Chiefs on Jan 25, 2012 7:16 PM CST up reply actions
ok, then there's this ...
doesn’t HE need his own QBotF? and if so, wouldn’t that be Luck? he’s brand new (as is the GM) so he should have a 2-3 year “grace period” no?
I imagine Pioli has checked, or will … but it’s not like him to pull off trades like that, I think he covets more, not fewer, draft picks

What was the last mediocre QB to make the super bowl?
Grossman?
I’m just saying, there really is no point in stockpiling draft picks if you don’t have the one player that is most likely to get your team to the postseason and beyond
I'm so overrated, I'm underrated.
by RememberDelaney37 on Jan 25, 2012 10:47 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Luck: Being prepared when an opportunity presents itself (not to be confused with Andrew Luck).
You stockpile draft picks so when the opportunity to get a “Franchise QB” presents itself (once you have all other pieces in place…like O-Line, WR’s, RB’s) you can trade up to “get your man”.
We are not prepared (yet)…If we get DeCastro and Mike Adams in this years draft (and can ‘stockpile’ a few picks) THEN we can move up in a draft (2013) and get our “Franchise QB” (If Stanzi is not that guy already….which with the right players around him…I think he just might/could be).
by DivineGrace on Jan 26, 2012 12:40 AM CST up reply actions
Lots of people don't want to pay for a franchise quarterback.
So, how do we get one? They don’t grow on trees. They are seldom found low in the drafts. We either have to suck to get a first pic, or we have to negotiate for one. So, what’s it going to be?
The fallacy of false choice
You listed two options as if they were the only two possibilities.
Another exists…develop your own mid to late round QB
Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl
That is the Pink Pony
or the Red Herring that GM’s that have no “Balls” rely on
Go Big or Go Home

Ya, that develop your own mid to late round QB stuff NEVER works out.
Just ask Houston
Lets face it, there is no one in the Chiefs orginization who has ever taken a QB after the first round and won a Super Bowl….amiright?

my goodness...cassel dorsey...ok....but getting rid of kendrick lewis? why the heck would we do thaty
id rather give up 2 more 3’s than surrender lewis. hes a huge part of our secondary.
send all the picks plus dorsey you want
Pay Brandon Carr/Romeo
Team Colquitt
I would be willing to bet anything there's
nothing any team could offer the Colts to get that 1st pick, well maybe NE if they offered Brady and some picks. Colts wont be trading that pick for anything, imo
Sadly True
But lets give the new GM a call and see :)
and then we can Call St. Louis and see what the 2nd pick would cost.
by Steve_Chiefs on Jan 25, 2012 8:08 PM CST up reply actions
I wouldnt mind if we tried for the 2nd pick
but I think teams like Washington will be willing to throw alot more picks to move up there then we will, I say we fix oline and draft for depth this year, then next year make a huge push for whoever they think the best qb is coming out
I mainly was thinking that trading up is not an insurmountable thing to do
and we have chips to play in this 2012 draft to get there
by Steve_Chiefs on Jan 25, 2012 8:15 PM CST up reply actions
nice
I like this route I would be happy with luck even tho I truely believe RG3 will have a better career imo legs help I fell lucks legs might become an issue in a few years like rivers but still so much upside with him just keep him upright and off his back so either way we do need that future QB
