7 Reasons Kansas City is a possible Landing Spot For Peyton Manning

Peytonmanningsuperbowl_medium
Lately, especially today, the football world has been obsessed with the idea of Peyton Manning, one of the few faces of the NFL, leaving the team he has been with his whole career for another team. Crazy right? Peyton Manning? Your crazy he's not leaving the Indianapolis. But now, i'm going to give you a couple reasons why Manning would be smart to come to Kansas City if he decides to play again, because i'm sure the Chiefs fans would give Peyton a very warm welcome.

To everyone who saw my comment about this same thing in the free agency thread, i know it's almost the same, but I wanted other people to see it, so I posted it as a fanshot.

Star-divide

I would love us to take a shot at Manning. I'm sure the rest of "Chiefs Nation" would agree with me. Yes, I know it may not be too realistic, and if they don't land Manning, I'm all for Re-signing Kyle Orton. But Manning would be a great pickup. You might be thinking, "Why would Peyton Come to Kansas City?" Well……

1. He’d have so many weapons around him, With (if re-signed) Dwayne Bowe, Steve Breaston, a convincing young Baldwin, Young Tony Moeaki, and possibly another TE (Finely) For a 2 TE duo.

2. Romeo Crennel and Tony Dungy seem like similar coaches. Manning and Dungy had a great relationship, and won as lot every year, and I think Manning would like him.

3. Kansas City and Indianapolis are both Cities that aren’t filled with the paparazzi and all the drama, and he might feel like home.

4. If the Chiefs do land Manning, thjey would be much more convinced to sign other free agents for Manning, and the other Free Agents would like to have Manning on their team, also.

5. Jim Caldwell was a quarterbacks coach for indianapolis, if I’m correct, and was just fired from the Head Coach of the Colts, and maybe Pioli could also land him, and have Manning and Caldwell reunite.

6. Manning would have a familiar face protecting him, in Ryan Lilja. Yeah, that's no reason to make a man move to a whole different state, and make a huge life choice just because he has an old friend on the team, but if he is considering Kansas City, maybe that would help at least a little bit.

7. (This isn't convincing for Manning, but convincing for the Chiefs, and backup QB Ricky Stanzi) Since Peyton Manning will only be in the NFL for a few more years, 2 at most, it would let them see what they have in Ricky Stanzi, and it would have to help him develop into a real, franchise QB, like Manning.

This is why I think The Chiefs, and Peyton Manning should make the choice to team up, yeah, it'll cost a little, but the Chiefs have some money to spend, to say the least. Let em know what you guys think in the comments below.

Mel Kiper listed the Chiefs 4th on his list of possible landing spots for Peyton Manning. So hey, maybe there is a chance.

here is my thoughts.

Im not sure exactly how much money we got I tried to post some things to help figure it out like websites that have chiefs contracts but didnt have the time or all the contracts to figure it all out so gave up. From what I hear they got 30 million to spend.

bowe will probably want what 8-10 million a year?
carr would probably want what 6-9 million a year?
we have to resign albert next year, yea we might save money on other guys contracts personally I think dorsey and jackson should restructure there contract, even though im hearing jackson is stepping his game up finally. Dorsey should be traded to be honest im a fan of dorsey but not blind to believe one of my favorites even before the start of the 2010 season when he was projected a top 10 pick allan bailey takes dorsey’s job cause he is a beast in the waiting.
I think we need a guy like solairi NT and odds are he costs a pretty penny.
thats not counting other players we need seeing how many Free Agents we have this year.

people say we got a ton of money but dont forget we got a ton to spend on players we need also regardless.

I doubt peyton would still get a contract like he currently has or does that have to be honored if he is released? odds are he takes alot though to get do we really got it? Does anyone really got it? odds are if he wants to play he has to take less so basically its on peyton to make his choice where he plays.

rumors of him going to the jets, why wouldnt he eli is in the same stadium in new york and its the big market that archie wanted eli to go to so badly.

he's gonna cost a TON of money and I can't see it happening ... at his age, and with the neck surgery and questions about that, rather not take the chance

good stuff here, Aaron … but it seems like “7 reasons to justify why you want him” instead of “reasons for him to come here” … if you get the distinction

not that I don’t understand your passion for the guy, one of the best ever, hands down … I just see too many obstacles in the way and a lot better use of Hunts’s money than investing a ton in Manning

we’ll find out in time where he goes, but I’d just as soon re-sign Orton, re-sign our own Free Agents, maybe 1 or 2 other FA’s out there, and lock it all up with a killer draft where we finish the OLine and add quality depth in 4 or 5 other places

good post though :-)

I would be fine with tagging and trading Bowe if...

1. Manning came in.
2. Caldwell became our OC
3. Garcon came in

by kckrazy25 on Jan 24, 2012 8:48 PM CST reply actions

The great thing about having Manning is

that he would make a lot of offensive coordinators look good, and would have a lot of influence whether its in game planning or audibles. And Garcon would be nice but I wouldn’t say he would be necessary. Manning with Baldwin, Breaston, Moeaki, McCluster, Copper, and a high draft pick if we were to lose bowe would be a great offense when paired with Charles and Battle in the backfield.

by andrew33 on Jan 24, 2012 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

If Manning is healthy and is cut by Indy...

He would be smart to take less money to play on the Chiefs.

As a D Coordinator how do you guard a passing attack with Manning, Bowe, Baldwin, Breaston, McCluster and a running attack with Jamaal Charles and Battle. Chiefs also have very good pieces on the O line which could look even better with a guy like Manning at the helm and Charles back for the team.

Manning would also play with a young and fierce defense which has one of the most talented LB corp (Hali, Houston, DJ, Siler), CB corp (Flowers, Carr, Arenas, Daniels, Brown), and Safety Corp (Berry and Lewis).

Special teams is also very good as the Chiefs have one of the best kickers in Colquitt and Succop, and statistically the 4th best KR in Arenas.

Not to mention having Manning would eliminate our need for a great O Coordinator because Manning will have alot of influence on what the Chiefs would run. Add in Home field advantage, the proximity from KC to Indy, and a draft to plug up few of the holes the Chiefs have left, and KC could be an instant title contender.

by andrew33 on Jan 24, 2012 8:59 PM CST reply actions

I 'might' be alright with signing Manning if and ONLY IF the only cost is $$$

No way in hell I would spend draft picks (even 4th or 5th) on someone who is 35+ and coming off his 3rd neck sergury. To spend Draft picks on Manning would be short sighted at BEST, and could set the Chiefs back for YEARS at worst.

by DivineGrace on Jan 24, 2012 9:14 PM CST up reply actions

Who said anything about draft picks?

Only way Manning leaves Indy is if (and when) he’s cut, because of that enormous roster bonus he’s due in March.

Pey-Pey will be F.A.

It's no fun if I have to explain it.

by TRSChief on Jan 25, 2012 7:42 AM CST up reply actions

And dont forget he'll actually have a running game and defense for the first time... ever!

Personally i dont think peyton will command too much of a payday this offseason. Here’s why. The teams in need of a Franchise QB that dont have a young one in play are the chiefs, dolphins, browns, redskins, seahawks, cardinals, jets, and i’ll throw in the colts. Out of those teams the only teams that are a “QB away” are the jets and the chiefs. If you were peyton would you really even consider the jets… Rex ryan’s toxic locker room is nowhere peyton wants to be and they have average weapons. Colts get luck, and RG3 is goin to the browns, dolphins, redskins. That leaves the seahawks and they have one receiver and who wants to play in seattle. If he hits free agency theres no reason other then pioli not spending money that hes not a chief next year

He is never playing again

Troy Aikman was in the same denial 11 years ago, he is done. I have an immediate family member in the medical field who has said since last summer he is done but yet all we heard was “when Peyton comes back”.

The only part of this I agree with is see what we have with Ricky Stanzi.

Another insentive to get him here could be to sign Jeff Saturday

The two have a connection. Even though Saturday is 36, he would be with Manning until both retired. It seems like a Pioli type move too. We could then move Hudson to guard and solve that problem on the line. We could also take a crack at Reggie Wayne or Garcon as well if Bowe is not resigned. I think both won’t be back in Indy next year. Baltimore West, Kansas City Patriots, Kansas City Colts? Wow. That would be a dream scenario.

Also, Bowe > Wayne, which would become obvious if ever got to see Bowe with Manning

Was in better shape when we got him than what Peyton will be. And hell no to Jim Caldwell even being a janitor for the Chiefs, he failed as hc in college and was undressed quick once Peyton left the field.

I think you could make a better case because of our division

You look at the Cardinals, Jets, and Dolphins and they have talent like ours (although I think we have more talent). But, our division is so weak right now a home playoff game would easily be attainable. I can’t see him playing in the same division as the 49ers or Patriots. A dark horse like the Texans could make a play, but hopefully Manning doesn’t do it since they areva division rival of the Colts.

I'd like to call into question the term "Landing Spot" in the title

Judging from the fact that BEFORE he went in for his 2nd and 3rd neck surgeries Peyton Manning had already been medically cleared, I don’t think we can trust anyone that says he’s medically cleared to play football.

Manning isn’t looking for a landing spot in so much that some team is preparing a place for him to crash and burn.

The Powers Of Astute Observation Are Often Mistaken As Cynicism By Those That Do Not Posses Them -- G.B. Shaw

by Texas Chief on Jan 24, 2012 11:36 PM CST reply actions

I don't think any of those reasons (or all of them together) are good enough.

1. Weapons aren’t really an issue for Manning. He’s made the guys around him better. Half of those players in Indy disappeared without him. This isn’t a selling point for him.

2. Romeo Crennel has been a nemesis to Manning throughout his career. Manning would rather beat Crennel than play for him.

3. There are plenty of towns without major paparazzi. But let’s not forget that Manning hasn’t exactly shied from the spotlight over the past few years. This would have been a much better argument about 10 years ago.

4. If the Chiefs do land Manning, it’s going to cost them a ton of money. That kind of an acquisition is likely to make us a little more tight with cash when it comes to other players. Especially considering we still have some key contracts of our own to deal with.

5. That’s a long shot, and really unnecessary. Peyton has run the offense in Indy for years. This would be nothing more than a familiar face. But with his time in the league, Peyton already knows most of the guys in the league.

6. Will Lilja be protecting him? The consensus seems to be that we need to upgrade that spot on the o-line. Has there been a mock offseason scenario on AP that didn’t include a new LG? Even Pioli has said they need to work on the o-line.

7. Like you said, that isn’t convincing for Peyton. He could get the same situation with a number of teams. Some of which will be Super Bowl contenders with him (Jets, 49ers, Texans, Titans).

I know it’s a glamorous move, but I just don’t think it does enough for us. We still have no idea if he is even going to be healthy (or play for that matter).

I dont think these questions truly address the reasons

1. Weapons are a issue for Manning. Manning is not going to think that he is so great that he creates weapons with any offensive player. Manning will prefer a offense with a lot of weapons around him.

2. Again, Manning is not an android programmed to do what he does. He knows Crennel is a great defensive mind, and it is an incentive to play with him. Manning is not thinking of going to a team with a worse head coach/worse oc/worse dc to prove that he can beat these guys.

3. Kansas City is probably as close as Indy as Peyton could get in terms of exposure, proximity, and culture.

4. Yes its going to cost a lot of money, but it is not going to break the bank. Peyton coming off couple neck surgeries is going to command about half as much money as before if that. Teams know that there is a huge health risk here and won’t pay as much as we believe they should for Peyton.

5. It is unnecessary for Caldwell to be the OC, I agree; Peyton Manning will stop all our complaints of having a shitty OC. He will audible when he has to, and will have a large influence in our game plans.

6. Well this isn’t really a huge issue, but it sure doesnt hurt to have a guy who can tell and teach the other lineman of what Peyton wants and how he wants to be protected.

7. We have great offensive weapons, one of the greatest collection of defensive talents, and great special teams. We have a great home field advantage in Arrowhead, and the position of QB is honestly all we need if our QB was to be Peyton.

The greatest part is that he will be paired with Jamaal Charles. Peyton should recognize that no defensive coordinator can stop Charles and Peyton when they are on the field at the same time. Charles, even with 8 and 9 stacked in the box, can outrun them for huge gains consistently. With Berry, Charles, Moeaki, and Siler back we become a much more complete team, and Manning would take us over the top.

See, I read your reasons, and all I see is a biased slant towards bringing him in.

Because you want him here, there is a positive spin on all of your reasons.

Realistically, what does KC offer Peyton that he can’t get anywhere else? And most importantly, do we offer him what he really wants (a Super Bowl)?

If Peyton Manning has his choice of teams (and he likely will), why should he choose KC? He’s not going to be establishing a legacy here. This won’t be a long-term home for him. It has to be about winning, and KC hasn’t shown it can do that. While we like to talk about how good our team will be when we get our stars back, there is no evidence to support that (we got blown out with Berry and Charles still on the roster).

Other than SF & Houston, KC is as good a place as any

Considering that SF was a play away from the SB, you can’t just assume they’ll move on from Smith. As for Houston, if they give up on Shaub I’d be more than happy to take him off their hands. Is he going to stay there to be Mannings backup? no. Are the Texans going to let him go to bring Manning in for anywhere from a game to four seasons? no.

Miami & AZ have supposedly expressed interest & either of those probably have an equal chance of landing him as KC does…but I won’t assume KC to be out of the mix because of that.

Predictions:
I'm going to stop predicting positive things

by jmcgoblue on Jan 25, 2012 10:47 AM CST up reply actions

SF could easily make the case that they didn't go to the Super Bowl BECAUSE of Alex Smith.

He hardly played a great game.

Also, with Schaub’s injury, he is a question mark. There isn’t even a guarantee that he’ll be able to practice when camps start up. So there is a lot to monitor there.

Don’t rule out the Jets, Ravens, Bears, or Cowboys either. All of those teams have had serious questions about their QBs over the past couple of seasons.

I’m not ruling KC out of the mix. I just don’t want people to think we have a stronger position than we really do.

Yeah, I agree with your last point in particular

KC would probably be a good situation for him, but you can say that for a lot of teams.

Predictions:
I'm going to stop predicting positive things

by jmcgoblue on Jan 25, 2012 11:36 AM CST up reply actions

Not biased at all. Its just reality.

What player doesnt want weapons around him? What offensive player doesn’t want a good defensive coordinator? Will Peyton even cost half of what he did in Indy with the health risk? Has Peyton made any Offensive coordinator look bad? and so on

Your reasons are pretty biased such as Manning doesn’t need weapons so it doesn’t matter if we have good offensive weapons. Manning would never play with crennel because they were nemesis for a few years.

by andrew33 on Jan 25, 2012 7:55 PM CST up reply actions

Want vs Need.

Peyton doesn’t NEED any of those things. So they aren’t selling points. And what he WANTS is to win another title. Do the Chiefs give him the best chance to do that? Probably not.

If Peyton really cared about any of those things, he could have left in Free Agency last year. And yes, Peyton will still cost a ton of money. There will still be a competitive market for him in which he can drive his price.

As for OCs, he’s been his own for the past 10 years. He runs his own offense, so yeah, that makes anybody with the title of OC in Indy seem pretty useless.

How are my answers biased? I WANT Peyton to play for us, but none of those reasons that aaron gave really hold any water. Peyton isn’t some 28 year old QB looking to establish his legacy. He’s 36 and looking to go out on top. The Chiefs don’t provide that right now.

One reason why not

Clark Hunt will not spend that kind of money. We have been talking about the amount of extra money that the Chiefs could spend for two years now, and next year we will be talking about how much they NEED to spend to get to the salary floor, which does not kick in until 2013.

But, how will the cost effect the rest of the Chiefs. What draft picks would we have to give up to obtain him. We have alot of young players we need to sign long term contracts.

Here we are 2 weeks before the Super Bowl and they Peyton Manning topic has been beat to death.

1. This regime would “Never” pull the trigger.

2. Along with his Spinal Fusion, one of the lingering problems is weakness in his throwing arms tricept muscle. The nerve damage he is experiencing will never fully recover.

3. Absurb money for an aged, injured, far past his prime QB would set this franchise back years.

So, if you want that scenario to unfold on your Chiefs, then sure let’s sign him, waste our time, money, and young talent on the team while they play with a very mortal version of a once godly QB. Peyton will retire, sorry folks. So please, let’s have some more Peyton and trade Bowe posts.

Far past his prime?

Last year he did this:

66.3% completion
4,700 yards
33 TD
17 INT
99.1 QB Rating

If that’s far past his prime, I’d still take that kind of production for a couple of years while we look for the long term answer.

4 and 7 don't seem like reasons why he'd come here, just what we'd do afterwards

5 hasn’t happened yet, and may never will. I can’t imagine Ryan Lilja is going to make much of a difference. I don’t think we know what he makes of Romeo Crennel.

The only reason Peyton would want to come here would be if he thinks this is his best shot of winning. And I have a hard time thinking we’d be ahead of the Jets in that thinking. Its not impossible, but its hard to see to be honest. I think we’d be ahead of like Washington or Oakland, but behind the Jets in his order of preferences.

we need C (Hudson likely takes it, first year starting) RT, FB (if McClain isn’t re-signed) OG (unless you’re convinced Lilja is good, and I’m not after this past year) and possibly WR (if Bowe isn’t re-signed) … and we have both Moeaki and Charles coming off injuries, no guarantees on either of those guys, also need TE depth

Kansas City is a hell hole when it comes to the weather. The man played his entire NFL career with a home stadium that was a dome. That includes when they had home field advantage in the playoffs. That is a big change and I don’t see him making it. I mean your talking half your schedule at least could be raining or snowing or just all around cold

Aaron...while I don't agree with you on getting Manning (or Caldwell for that matter)

I appreciate the time you took to present your thoughts and how you laid them out in a manner that was easy to read.

Kudos!

Seriously

Why do people have a fear of drafting a QB in the 1st round? Why do we need another retread at QB? Even if the guy was healthy , he has what, 2-3 years tops. I just don’t get it
