According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Matt Cassel will "for sure" be the Chiefs' starting quarterback heading into training camp.
Via Rotoworld: Schefter's comments leave the door open for the Chiefs to add competition, but the feeling among organization higher-ups is that Cassel can still be a success. Free agent Kyle Orton has hinted he won't be back after leading the Chiefs to a 2-1 record down the stretch.

Sure wish that read "3-0 record down the stretch.
Still not over that game.
Yep would be playoffs, beat the Steelers then who knows what.
They would’ve had a hard time not bringing Orton back if he won three games to make the playoffs and then at least one playoff game.

If the "higher ups" still think this then they really need to consider being the "higher ups" of a new team and trying their experiment there.
Instead of wasting more of our time, energy and money as fans.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
Which is why they have gotten so very little of my money.
Top 10 defense and another trip to the playoffs!

Are you kidding me?
Bowe and Carr won’t like the sound of that.
I thought that Orton's 3 games
showed more success than Cassel has ever had in his career at KC. Had our special team not faltered against the Raiders, we could easily be looking at 3-0 against the then undefeated Packers, Broncos when they were in a must-win situation, and the Raiders who were also in a must-win situation. Cassel has never led us to any significant victories, and showed no ability to bring the team back even when they would be down a single TD. Not to mention McCluster, Breaston, among others seemed to find a role with a competent QB. The Chiefs were so much better with Orton…
The Green Bay game
could possibly be our biggest win so far in the 2,000’s.

Maybe this makes it more likely they'll go for Manning?
Wishful thinking, I know.
Predictions:
I'm going to stop predicting positive things
It isnt a suprise
but it makes me sick hearing it. We will never be better than average with Matt Cassel. I think everyone saw the offense with him a the helm this year. Its the same damn thing. He has happy feet, cant read the field and make progressions, and has a noodle arm past 10 yards. If the front office cant see that then they are blind or stupid.

To me this is a no brainer...
Even if we got Luck or RG III Cassel would be the starter going into training camp…

Is this like
“Tebow will be out Starting QB at the opening Training Camp.”
Now if we could only get Pioli to say it and not Schefter…
What a year! At least we have the Royals... Oh Wait!
Protest
If Cassel is the starting QB in the opening game of the regular season, I will not wear any Chiefs’ attire of any sort next year. It’s not much, but short of cancelling Prime Ticket, it’s what I can do to show my utter disdain for the Chief’s braintrust (“brain” in this usage is an oxymoron).
Dammit
What will I wear next year?

status quo
“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you already got.”
Cassel remains a starter, Bowe and Carr leave = worst offseason ever
and then I would sharpen my pitchfork and light some torches for the angry mob.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
First, how does Schefter know this with such confidence?
Second, how can this be much of a surprise? If the Chiefs draft someone, they’re likely not starting him day one. You have to give a rookie time to develop, unless they come into camp and just tear things up. Then, what FA out there, other than Orton, would immediately unseat Cassel? If Orton doesn’t want to come here, it’s not going to no matter how much money they throw at him (and he’s really not worth that much).
This is kind of non-news really.
it's not what we "want"
It’s what we “predict”

I'm tired of hearing rookie QB's need time to develop.
Tell that to Cam Newton and Andy Dalton who just made their first Pro Bowl (I don’t care that they were alternates). They had waaaay less time to “develop” this past offseason.
And besides them, have we not seen enough examples of great rookie QB play the last few years to put this excuse to bed?
That was how Matt Cassel made his pro bowl,
so it is level around these parts…

Cam Newton was the number one overall pick
That’s not happening for the Chiefs, nor should it.
Andy Dalton rated way better than any of the non-Luck/RGIII QBs in this draft, and it’s not even close right now. If there was a second-tier option like that (or maybe if one emerges), then I’m sure the Chiefs would pursue that aggressively.
So, like I said, if the Chiefs draft a QB, they WILL need time to develop, because they likely won’t be ready for the starting lineup. It’s not a pat excuse, it’s a reasoned assessment of the actual situation.

something doesnt add up
As a pathetically optimistic fan of chief football there is something we are missing here. As noted before quality QB’s are scarce. Seeing what Orton did in the green bay game it was obvious that he had a better claim of being a quality Qb than Cassel. But yet Orton made statements such as this is Cassels team and now we get Shefter report………I do not believe that the coaching staff or Pioli gives a shit about Cassel or Orton per se…….they want the best QB to hitch their wagons to…….So what the hell are we as fans missing in our evaluation of Qb abilities……….it doesnt add up and pioli not wanting to admit a mistake is a stupid reason that makes no sense to me therefore I dont except that explanation…….but there must be something with Cassel to warrant all the coaches confidence in him.
Orton and Matt have the same agent he is not gonna cause a controversy and sign here with matt still here
If we want Orton then Matt has to be moved and I think everyone involved knows that . The key here is to make these moves without hurting the value with a lot of pre-move speculation
At this point it really should all come down to Romeo if he wants Orton then you do what it takes to get him his QB . If he wants to move forward with matt then you let him .
Considering Romeo went through a huge QB controversy in Cleveland hes not gonna do it again so it will be either or the question is has he been given a choice ? Remember he only got a 3 yr deal .

If Cassel is starting come 2012 im just gonna focus on other things in life fuck this bullshit no wonder we havent heard anything about coaches nobody wants to deal with a Cassel led team and i dont blame them.
Me and Matt Cassel just - you up, dog!
Well it does say at the start of training camp,
which leaves the door open for a replacement later on… much like the Donks are doing with Tim Tebow.

if so...
it’s because they believe Stanzi has a future, not Cassel.
What's the point?
I’m not as low on Cassel as most, but I think that it’s been proven beyond a reasonable doubt that 2008 and 2010 are about as good as Cassel gets, which is fine if you want a good but not great team. But if your goal is to win the Super Bowl, you’re better off taking a risk in Stanzi than continuing with the known quantity.

Cassel = mediocre
bleh
Uhhh...I hate looking at the 1983 Draft and seeing 2 HOF'ers picked after our washed up QB pick.
I don't know why everyone is getting so worked up
The last rumor I heard was the Chiefs were going to bring in both Cassel and Orton into training camp and have them compete for the job. If that were the case, I would certainly think Cassel would be the starter coming in. Coming out is another story.
https://twitter.com/#!/super8kc
Cassel would be the incumbent starter
no matter who they bring in. They likely wouldn’t name someone ahead of him before camp, unless it was someone like Manning. And even then, they’d probably wait to make sure he’s healthy.
As you said, what’s important is who is the starter coming out of camp.

It's only fair that Cassel is the starter going into training camp.
He was here a lot longer then Orton was, and was already titled the starter last season. However, I deeply think that Orton is an upgrade from Cassel and will beat him out in the end. I believe the Chiefs think the exact same thing, but want to make sure before making any hasty decisions onto who is the true “starter”.

I said a couple weeks ago, that if Cassel comes back as the starter
that I will watch the first couple games, if there is not VAST improvement, im done with the Chiefs…Its been over 40 years since this team won a championship, almost 20 years since they won a playoff game….they have one of the lowest payrolls in the league…If they dont make a push to improve the most important position on the field then it shows me that they arte not REALLY interested in winning….its just about putting money in their pockets…THATS IT…if they cannot see that they are on the cusp of being a contender then we need new people in charge…this team lacks a quality QB..Cassel IS NOT a quality QB..Orton proved that…we have a D, a run game, decent SP…we lack a RT, and a Q FRIGGIN B….Cassel has proved he cannot pass with accuracy, he cant go through his progressions, he has happy feet, takes too many sacks, holds the ball too long etc etc etc…….HE is the WEAK LINK on the offense. He is SUPPOSED to be the best player on the field…he is not…every sucessful playoff team usually has one thing…the QB is the best player on the team…he makes it run, he makes everyone better, he see’s things before they happen, he is calm in the face of chaos…Cassel does none of those things..He has yet to beat a GOOD TEAM since he got here…he HAS TO GO….its simple. If the front office rolls with him, and I dont see significant improvement from him next year and we are NOT leading this WEAK ASS DIVISION, then i will take my 40 years of loyal fandom somewhere else…because they will have proved to me that they dont give a shit about winning in KC…
Clark Hunt and Scott Pioli need to IMPRESS me in 2012....No Settling this year Chiefs Fans!!
Well with a better defense
And key players back . We might have enough talent to drag cassel into the playoffs , shoot if we have a good enough draft and F.A we might even win a playoff game . Cassel = Mr. medicrocity . Don’t they see medicore qbs can’t go to the superbowl " flacco, smith. Who may or may not be better" close , sure but close don’t mean squat .

There goes another season down the drain if its true
Scott Pioli said he wanted to come in here and contend for Championships. If he keeps Cassel as the starting QB then he obviously has no more desire to do so. Cassel is NOT a starting NFL QB. Backup, clipboard and hat wearing QB at best.
If Cassel is starting next season I will rip my hair our and if he starts to perform badly like the same old shitty Cassel we’re use to I’m done caring about and watching the Chiefs until they get a new QB in there. Cassel will NEVER get it done. NEVER. Is it not apparent to the Chiefs organization and the media?
