Brian Waters Heads To The Super Bowl

If you're looking for silver linings in the fact that the Kansas City Chiefs are not in the 2012 Super Bowl, look to Brian Waters. The former Chiefs guard and now New England Patriots offensive lineman is going to his first Super Bowl.

Waters was asked about his emotions after the game and said:

"I'm overjoyed. This is an unbelievable deal. This is probably the most excited I have been in a long time, since the birth of my children probably. God knows this has been unbelievable and I have been truly blessed. I appreciate my teammates and these guys welcomed me here and just gave me an opportunity to do something special."

Incredible. Gotta feel good about Waters getting his chance (at least I do). Makes it slightly easier to stomach the Chiefs missing out on the playoffs.

So, if the Patriots win this one and Waters gets a ring, we're just waiting on Tony Gonzalez to get one, right?

but not this year. Love to see Waters get a ring. I could give a crap about Lawrence Tynes, lol.

Same here.

Plus I despise Eli Manning. I’d love to see Wilfork plant an Eli Manning sized hole in the middle of Indy’s field.

Lawrence Tynes is to football...

as Lonnie Smith was to baseball. Lonnie Smith has 2 World Series rings because he was lucky enough to be on the right team, at the right time. Sorry, Lonnie.

Couldn't agree more

That’s why I hate the people who like to point out Tynes (and others like Key Fox) as some sort of mistake made by the Chiefs just because he has a ring. Even when he hit that game winner in OT back in Lambeau and everyone was gushing over the guy, if he wouldn’t have missed the TWO earlier, it wouldn’t have needed to come down to that.

I mean really, let’s congratulate Tynes for not screwing up a chip shot field goal like your counter-part for Baltimore? Not me. I had no problem when the Chiefs traded his inconsistent leg, and still have no problem with it. Who they got to replace him with until Succop came along is a different issue.

That's the best you've got?

You didn’t go back to 2003 and shame the defense too?

If management could actually build a solid team on both sides of the ball, perhaps Brian would have won a championship here. Just a thought. I know you’re all about Hunt and Pioli’s process, but you know, sometimes, the process is flawed.

I think that was just as much a Pioli decision as it was a Haley one, if not more so.

And hindsight is 20/20. We had Asamoah waiting in the wings and ready to play, and it definitely looked like Waters had lost a step last year. In fact, despite Waters’ Pro Bowl bid, most would tell you that Lilja looked far better than he did last year. The fact that Waters played great this year and Lilja not so much is just the way it goes sometimes. Of course the common denominator in both of their down years was Casey Wiegmann.

Did Waters actuallty play that well this year?

I kind of had the impression he was the least of their 5 starting linemen, but I have only seen a handful of Pats games.

Would he have beaten Lilja and/or Asamoah in a training camp battle?

No.

Vollmer sucks, and Connoly had a bit of a down year.
Mankins is the best, then Light and Waters are around tied for 2nd. At least this is what I can gather from the Pats games I’ve seen. I dunno if he was Pro Bowl worthy, but definitely good.

Thank you

People seem to have forgotten that Lilja outplayed Waters last year.

I think they knew they needed to get Asamoah on the field, so it became a choice between Lilja and Waters. Lilja is younger and played better last year, so they talked to Waters about it and he decided he’d rather be released than ride the bench.

But people act as though cutting him made no sense at all. It’s frustrating.

What else were they supposed to do? Waters has a year or two left, Lilja has several more than that and had played well in 2010. There was no way they were keeping Asamoah off the field. So out of those three who do you cut? My vote goes to the old guy.

I think he did what was best for the organization.

We wanted a youth movement, he waited a while for us to get a young replacement for him that could play to his level (Jon Asamoah, 2012 Pro Bowl right guard!), then the Chiefs rewarded him by letting him get a chance at a ring before he retired.

but I haven’t seen anyone suggest this:

He’s sharp, right? Is there a reason to think he couldn’t be an outstanding center? Hudson is smaller, and was an All-American left guard. Could this work?

Albert, Hudson, DeCastro, Asamoah, Richardson or upgrade

That’s a promising young line – the tackles are the oldest, just entering year five.

So you'd pay him the same money as Baltimore did just to be a backup?

Let’s not forget the Texans didn’t think he was good enough to bring back either, and they weren’t exactly deep at safety.

by CapsLockKey on Jan 23, 2012 1:11 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Plus the reason he was cut in the first place

sounded more like an attitude/personality issue. That and he can’t cover worth a crap, although when you are playing next to Ed Reed you don’t looks so bad. The only thing I liked about Pollard when he was a Chief was he was a monster on special teams, but he sucked as a safety and still does.

by CapsLockKey on Jan 23, 2012 1:18 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Pollard is a solid safety when he is used mostly for run support and isn't asked to be rangy

That works well when Ed Reed is your free safety.

It doesn’t work in the defense the Chiefs currently run because we want both safeties to be capable in run support and pass defense.

Belicheck doesn't give a shit about some stupid candy wrapper.

Then again, Belicheck probably doesn’t allow candy in the facility.

2012 Chiefs Draft Picks by Falcon58: G DeCastro 1st round, NT Ta'amu 2nd round or OT Adcock 2nd/3rd round, TE Egnew 3rd round, RB Ganaway 5th/6th, QB Case Keenum 5th/6th. Resign: Carr, Bowe, Orton, McClain, Gordon(in that order). Trade Dorsey for picks, promote Gordon to DT/DE.

Belicheck is obsessively focused on details

which is the point of the entire candy wrapper story…

Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl

not sure i care about either getting a ring

between the two, i’d rather see waters, he seems like a great guy. tony wanted out, that’s fine, but i dont feel bad for someone who’s made millions doing something that most of us would kill for. the league has tons of great players who never won a SB

by Arrowhead25 on Jan 23, 2012 12:20 PM CST reply actions

Imagine if Tony G.

had ended up in NY like he wanted. He’d be playing in the super bowl against another former Chief and future HOF’er.

In Pioli we trust?!!?

good thing our Oline is rock solid and we have no need for Pro Bowl guards

by ArrowDread on Jan 23, 2012 12:23 PM CST reply actions

damn Pioli,

Why would you cut someone, when he was getting out performed?

I don't have a catchy, catch phrase.

by dbakerku on Jan 23, 2012 12:28 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Training camp?

The guy showed up out of shape. Let’s not forget he was floundering out there after being cut for over a month before the Pats finally took a chance on him. I love BW, but he’s at the end of his career. Keeping him another year wouldn’t have made much difference.

by CapsLockKey on Jan 23, 2012 12:32 PM CST up reply actions

OK everyone that wants to jump on Pioli's case.

I believe Waters wanted out, he could have stayed if he wanted to be a backup, to a player that was playing better at the time. On a team not close, to performing for a superbowl. But no Brian and the Chiefs did a smart thing, by letting go of the veteran, so the younger guy can get better, and Brian can try for a ring before he retires. Sorry to bust everyone’s bubble, but the Chiefs were’nt winning one with Brian.

I don't have a catchy, catch phrase.

by dbakerku on Jan 23, 2012 12:31 PM CST reply actions

Your logic has no place here.

This is where people have knee-jerk reactions to everything Pioli does.

I could care less about TG winning a Superbowl or even a playoff game

Waters left without having to voice his displeasure out in public that he wanted to chase a ring asap instead of being part of a rebuild. Still respect TG’s contributions, but he could have approached the situation better

We really missed Water's leadership on the line this year.

but he’s not good enough to man the gap between Weigman and Alberts anymore. Now that I think about it, Will Shields would have a tough time with that, too.

No.

I am hoping for a Chief’s Superbowl ring, not a Tony G. Like the man but I want a ring for the Chiefs.

I don't have a dog in the fight

but I’ll be rooting for the Patriots so Brian can get a ring.

by Chief Willie Wildcat on Jan 23, 2012 1:09 PM CST reply actions

Congratulations Brian Waters

I will never root for either Tony Gonzalez or Jared Allen for a Superbowl. Its just a thing I have against former Chiefs that expressed their desire to move elsewhere. And I don’t care if it was Carl’s fault or Pioli’s fault or whoever. Once a player talks about wanting to be traded or wanting out of KC I have no respect for them and am not going to root for them again. Gonzo and Allen both did that. Waters did not and I will be pulling for him on SB Sunday.

by Chiefs08Matt on Jan 23, 2012 1:25 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Agree. Jared Allen did have issues here and didn't like Carl Peterson calling him out on it.

Waaa! It was the truth. I have been rooting against the Vikings ever since and the window is gone.

by KCbo on Jan 23, 2012 1:59 PM CST up reply actions

I actually don't have anything against the Vikings

My best friend is a Vikings fan because he lives up near Minneapolis (he’s definately a bigger Chiefs fan considering he owns season tickets and comes down for nearly every game) but I don’t root against them unless they’re playing us. I just don’t like former Chiefs who wanted out of KC. So essentially I won’t be rooting for the Patriots on SB Sunday, just for Brian Waters to play well, and if he ends up winning a ring then good for him. I’m just not going to be jumping for joy

by Chiefs08Matt on Jan 23, 2012 3:40 PM CST up reply actions

i tend to root for the pats because i recognize greatness, and understand what the pats are doing....what manning has done in indy....those are things we will remember forever.

they are epic.

congrats to waters, im not one that believes he had a place here with big jon stepping into a spot on the line, and im actually happy even moreso because lilja going down meant we got some rodney hudson at guard, which was nice too

go pats in 2 weeks

by Chieffanndonkeyland on Jan 23, 2012 2:16 PM CST reply actions

He was.

Last year. Which is all Haley and Pioli had to go by.

He’s also younger, and hadn’t spent the last several months in negotiations instead of working out.

Well sure if you want to go by all that stuff.

But dude said Haley was stupid. I think the “Period” or “nuff said” may even have been implied.

It’s pretty hard to argue with that.

Only one probelm

I hate Tom Brady more(I’m a Montana fan..), and yes i do like Brian CHIEFS were stupid to cut him.. If they hadn’t they could be where New England is… Brian was and is still top of his game.. Top echelon of his position..

by HometownKC86 on Jan 23, 2012 11:04 PM CST reply actions

Just curious...

Is it because he is an ex-chiefs you feel this way? Would you feel the same about the Ravens and pollard? I’m sure you would if it were the falcons and Tony G but there is no denying everyone here would probably go for that if it couldn’t be us. Just curious if its a former Chiefs thing you are rooting for or the ones that really gave a lot for us.
