Super Bowl Odds: Patriots Are Early Favorites Over Giants

The New England Patriots and New York Giants gave us one of the most memorable Super Bowls in recent memory when Eil Manning hit Plaxico Burress with seconds remaining to beat the previously undefeated Patriots. It was like a movie, which is how the NFL wants it.

And now the sequel to the movie is coming soon. February 5, actually.

The Patriots are the early favorites with a three-point line. New England was a nine-point favorite over the Baltimore Ravens, a game played at Gillette Stadium, so the experts expect this one to be much closer.

We'll have some Super Bowl content sprinkled in throughout the two weeks leading up to the game. It's another year where we're talking about teams not named the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Sigh...

Way to go Brian Waters

Isnt it funny how you can play for one team your whole career, then get let go,and then go to another team that thinks you can still help them and go to the superbowl.Im happy for waters to have a chance at a ring since the chiefs cant figure it out.maybe their is something with the patriots way?

The Giants should be wearing their Blue jerseys this time -

That’s gotta count for at least 3 points right there..

It's an even-numbered Super Bowl

which means AFC is the home team.

With New England returning for another.....

Pioli’s time has come.
He either wow’s us this off season and draft, or we end up realizing he only rode the coat tails of the real brains in New England.

by BCRavenJHawkfan on Jan 23, 2012 8:32 AM CST reply actions

Eh, the first 3 quarters of the original weren't that great, either.

Personally, I like the pairing better this time around. The two teams are a little more evenly matched on paper.

There’s almost no way it will be as epic as part 1, though. That’s for sure.

Do you guys remember before the season started

that Eli was asked if he thought he was an “elite” Qb and deserved to be mentioned with Brady, Peyton, Brees, Rodgers…….he said “YES”…

Well?……

Clark Hunt and Scott Pioli need to IMPRESS me in 2012....No Settling this year Chiefs Fans!!

by KCinAZ on Jan 23, 2012 8:39 AM CST reply actions

Yes I remember...

and now with Eli and Brady in the Super Bowl I have to think that the final debate is nearing an end.
Elite defenses can only take you as far as your mediocre Quarterback takes you once you reach the playoffs.

I’ve never been a fan of Eli but he isn’t afraid to take the team on his shoulders. He does have a ton of weapons and Alex Smith only had Vernon (I think he hit a WR 1 time).

Unless the offense has excellent weapons and a QB that is ABOVE average it has to have an Elite QB.

New England showed that the worst defense can rise to the occasion for at least 1 game in the playoffs.

by wrongway7 on Jan 23, 2012 8:48 AM CST up reply actions

Tell that

to the 2003 Chiefs defense.

At least I can still hate the stinking Raiders!

by Chiefs1 on Jan 23, 2012 9:00 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

The way i figure it..

The Giants put 20 points on a much better defense IN San Fran…they will put up at least 30 on NE on neutral turf….you cant stop NEs offense completely, but you can slow them down and outscore them. Ravens actually had enough offense to beat them yeasterday, they just blew the opportunities

Clark Hunt and Scott Pioli need to IMPRESS me in 2012....No Settling this year Chiefs Fans!!

by KCinAZ on Jan 23, 2012 9:28 AM CST up reply actions

Exactly

I know the kicker missed the field goal (and it appeared that the coach sent him in at the last second as he literally ran down took his step back and kicked – kind of rushed), but the defense kept them in the game.

I think Flacco is an above average QB and in that while the defense kept Brady “nearly” in check it just wasn’t enough.

The Patriots Defense rose to the occasion and held an above average QB. This game could have gone either way and I wouldn’t have been surprised, Flacco has shown he is capable but not quite Elite.

All four teams

Had a chance to win on their last possesion. The Giants and SF a number of times.

That was good football to watch.

Eli is very, very good

at his progressions. he is a bear to sack because he’s so slick at hitting his outlet passes and his hot routs. I hate the Giants as much as anybody but their legit. They beat the Pack in Green Bay, and the 49ers at the Stick, they are the true NFC champs.

Flaco did well

We have to give some credit to Flaco also who is just a mediocre quarterback also.he had nothing to be ashamed about.we all know about those dropped passes, and fieldgoals.

I know he played for the Giants for a little bit longer after that and then got picked up by the Ravens. I’m not sure if he plays for anybody now.

Chiefs win SB in 2014

I figured it out two days ago. It’s a lock. I know it. It all came together.

A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid ones that need the advice.

by Zayla on Jan 23, 2012 9:40 AM CST up reply actions

No, it's more simple

I’ve been a die hard Chief fan long enough to have actually watch them win a Super Bowl. Over the last 15+ years, until a few years ago I would fly out to see a game every year.

Now, due to a disablity, I have no money. I live in New Jersey.

All I’ve ever wanted was to take my son, now 13, to a Chief game, but can’t.

The 2014 SB is being played in New Jersey, about 50 minutes from my house. I’ve been here for over 50 years and know enough people and will be able to get tickets.

It’s in the cards, for my kid, not so much me.

Take it to the bank!

by Zayla on Jan 23, 2012 9:48 AM CST up reply actions

But do you really think he's that top notch?

I look at this season and alot of it was a product of their schedule and their division. In my eyes, by the grace of the football gods they landed a number 2 seed. They got lucky to have the Packers fail. Like Denver they exceeded expectations in the first playoff game last week. Yesterday it was about 2 plus quarters of good play.

But those last three times the 49’s had the ball, Smith and the 49’s looked like Cassel and KC. The offensive line couldn’t sustain a block if their life depended on it.

Tom Brady and the Patriots

At this point, Tom Brady is flat out the best quarterback there is. It’s very simple.

He has been the Patriots QB for 10 seasons (didn’t play his first year, and didn’t play in 2008).

In those ten years, he has now taken the Pats to FIVE Super Bowls.

That’s HALF of his seasons has their quarterback. That is unimaginable by any sports standards, and that’s win or lose in this one.

A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid ones that need the advice.

by Zayla on Jan 23, 2012 9:35 AM CST reply actions

yep

he and Belichick are the greatest HC QB tandom in NFL history in my view, and Brady could possibly pass Montana as the greatest QB ever should he win it this year, and in my opinion he’s very close even if he doesn’t win it.In this day and age in the NFL to go to the SB 50% of your career so far is just insane

by banshee_01 on Jan 23, 2012 9:48 AM CST up reply actions

Did you see the Brady 6 on ESPN?

The guy is far from the physical specimen.
He sees things in a way that is completely different than other QB’s. Or should I say he just sees, as some QB’s can’t even see the obvious.

by BCRavenJHawkfan on Jan 23, 2012 9:50 AM CST up reply actions

I did watch that

I thought the most telling part about it was when he started tearing up when he was talking about draft day. He’s a three time SB winner, two time SB MVP, two time league MVP, and list goes on and on and on…….. and it still upsets him to..this…day!

That shows you how much this guy still feels like he has something to prove.

Great show.

A word to the wise ain't necessary - it's the stupid ones that need the advice.

by Zayla on Jan 23, 2012 9:54 AM CST up reply actions

Bingo!

That’s what KC has to find, a guy with clear cut talent that feels he has something to prove every week, every day, every game, every snap of the ball!

by BCRavenJHawkfan on Jan 23, 2012 11:39 AM CST up reply actions

Let's also keep in mind he has to cover up

His team’s deficiencies at defense almost every year. That’s the definition of legendary right there. Without him, you would have the Colts this year if it wasn’t for Belichick being able to coach a player like Cassel.

When you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.

Jamaal above all. #25 ftw.

CHIEFS WILL!

I agree

But there is no way I would be a dime on this game. Too many variables in this one.

Giants are playing great on both sides of the ball.

Brady, however, seems hell bent on NOT losing. Something about him, and the team this year. They are nothing like the 2007 team. Everyone is talking about the Giants peaking, playing great at the right time, healthy, etc.

The Patriots are doing the same thing and people continue to underrate their defense.

I will never underestime Belichick, or Brady.

I’m rooting for the Pats, but think the Giants have the edge.

by Zayla on Jan 23, 2012 10:06 AM CST up reply actions

I base it more on that NE achilles heel is their secondary

First of all they have WR playing at the DB spot. Second, if not for Lee Evens dropping that TD, the Ravens probably win. Third, the Giants have 3 WR that can make plays and I can see Cruz just blowing the top off that secondary.

Totally Agree

Pat’s have to find a way to take Cruz out especially. That’s where Belichick comes in. He seems to find a way.

By the way, Evans didn’t drop the ball, the defender stripped it out. He should have held on tighter, but props to Moore for knocking it out.

by Zayla on Jan 23, 2012 10:17 AM CST up reply actions

BB will find a way..

He doesn’t want a repeat of what happened earlier this season when the Giants beat the Pats.

If Evans didn’t get the balled knocked out, I believe BAL would have won right there.

Max: Two days ago, I saw a vehicle that would haul that tanker. You want to get out of here? You talk to me.

by GaryfromIA on Jan 23, 2012 10:19 AM CST up reply actions

it goes both ways though

if that dude doesnt f up 2 punt returns for the Niners then the Niners probably win that game, and didnt they have a WR-Troy Brown, playing DB spot when they won their other 3 SB, and the defender knocked that ball out he didnt drop it. Belichick will game plan to make sure Cruz is a nonfactor in this game

by banshee_01 on Jan 23, 2012 10:25 AM CST up reply actions

But that brings up yet another factor

The Niners defense is better than New England’s. I bet the Giants will have an easier time scoring on NE than they did against SF. Lots of ways this can go, but I don’t see how the Pats are any more of a favorite.
