Offensive Free-Agents The Chiefs Should Target In 2012
Offensive Free Agents The Chiefs Should Target In 2012 That Would Improve Roster, and Bring An Elite Identity To The Offensive Unit.
Carl Nicks:
Carl Nicks, A Pro-Bowl Guard, and arguably the best guard in the NFL, Nicks seldom allows quarterback pressure, opens up wide gaps for running backs to exploit, and has little to no holes in his game. He's a complete veteran guard with play-off experience and should be the Number 1 Priority for Scott Pioli this year who seeks to improve the Offensive Line. Nicks would be a great offensive addition because would flourish in our system, which basically consist of run first-pass last. He would aide in giving who-ever our 2012-2013 season quarterback is plenty of time in the pocket and in my opinion be the first step to creating a dominant all-around Kansas Chiefs Line. Don't get it wrong Carl Nicks won't be cheap but i don't believe he'll get a contract worth more than Jahri Evans, who signed a 7 year - $56.7 million contract which averages to less than $8 million a year. So if the Chiefs want to sign an addition that would sure up the offensive line they better be ready and willing to compete with other teams lacking on the O-Line, and put the work in to sign this legit Offensive Guard, because he is the 1st step to a deep play-off run in the 2012-2013 NFL Season.
Jared Gaither:
Before I give my opinion, I already know what you are thinking, "Why would Gaither come back to the Kansas City Chiefs after what transpired",the answer is simple and the answer to all financial matters worldwide, the answer is,"Money Talks". The Chargers cannot afford to give Gaither a lucrative contract in 2012, due to the fact the Chargers have to re-sign one of the leagues best deep field threats, Vincent Jackson. Jackson is going to require a massive contract from the Chargers or walk, due to that cold fact the Chargers primary focus will be on Vincent Jackson, and when their focus is diverted the Chiefs will have an opportunity to offer Gaither a fairly decent long-term contract. I believe Gaither will return to the pro-bowl form that made him the corner-stone of the Baltimore Ravens Offensive Unit in the 2012-2013 NFL Season, i honestly believe he will fully recover from the back injury and be a beast. He is a massive, dominant, athletic, young, and driven offensive tackle and would give the Chiefs a dominant LT, to work along side a dominant LG (Carl Nicks), if the Chiefs find a way to pull both signings off. These signings would make the whole left side of the offensive line elite, and boost the production of both the running and passing game of Kansas City Chiefs. With these move the Chiefs can afford to move Branden Albert to RT or RG,he would flourish at both these positions due to his versatility(keep in mind Branden Albert was primarily a guard in college). Due to that the Chiefs would have a choice between drafting an OG, of a OT in the 2012 NFL Draft. If the Chiefs go OT, I advise they pick up Riley Rieff or Jonathan Martin. Both will be elite in the NFL. If the Chiefs go OG, I advise they pick up David DeCastro or Cordy Glenn, both will be future pro-bowlers (although DeCastro is the most complete guard, i like Glenn's versatility to play either OG of OT).
Peyton Hillis:
Peyton Hillis is an absolute beast of a power-back, "When Healthy", Hillis hasn't been very productive in the previous season because of the fact that he has been very banged up. A fact that very few spectators realize, Hillis has been one of the few big threats on the Cleveland Browns and due to that he has had to take the majority of snaps, when you take that many snaps that takes a tow on your body. It seems to me that Hillis is a match made in heaven for the Kansas City Chiefs to pair with Jamal Charles. Hillis has a versatile set of skills, has under-rated hands, and is tough runner who can truck down linebackers and d-backs and flourish between the tackles. Him along with the speedy Jamal Charles is a Lighting and Thunder combination, also due to the facts that he will split the snaps and not be an every down back would aid in keeping him fresh and limiting how tattered his body will be, keeping him strong in the long rum.
Marcel Reece:
For all those unfamiliar with Marcel "The Match-up Nightmare" Reece, he is an absolute beast, who eats linebackers for breakfast, defensive backs for lunch, and defensive schemes for dinner. Marcel is one of the leagues top fullbacks and plays for the Oakland Raiders, he's the guy that makes their RB's look so good. Not only is this guy a big, powerful mauler, he has elite hands, this guy made the transition from WR to FB in the NFL and proves that this a phenomenal skill set to have at the FB position. Marcel is a RFA (Restricted Free Agent) which usually means that new teams that sign a player, have to compensate the old team with a draft pick in the round that the player was drafted. But in Marcel's case he was an un-drafted free agent meaning that the Chiefs would not have to sacrifice a draft pick, they just have to offer Marcel a contract that outshines that of the Raiders, which should be easy to do considering the fact that going into the next season we lead the league in salary cap. As stated before Marcel is versatile threat in both the passing and run game, just imagine the schemes the Chiefs could produce do to both his and La' Ron McClain's presence, they could use then as extra blockers on obvious passing down, and also use them both as passing option on trick plays. They don't call Marcel the Match up Nightmare for no reason he has speed to out pace elite linebackers, the size to box out elite defensive backs, and the power to maul both in the running game. This guy is a match made in heaven for the Chiefs and Pioli would be foolish not to add Marcel to the Chiefs roster.
Jermichael Finley:
Underachieved this previous year, but is still an elite offensive threat to opposing defenses,he is young and the sky is the limit, given that he is in the right system. I believe the Chiefs system and Finley's skill set would be a great combination. He could also be paired with a healthy Tony Moeaki to prep us in what will be a dual-tight end passing league in the near NFL future.
Martellus Bennett:
A good blocking tight end who could be kept for depth on the Kansas City Chiefs roster, also would add positional competition in training camp for the two starting tight end positions. Don't get my opinion wrong Martellus is an elite run blocking tight end but lacks the elite hands that Finley and Moeaki have. Would be a great addition based solely on his run blocking, a team scheme with the offensive line i set, Bennett, McClain, Reece, and Hillis or Charles would be devastating to opposing defenses because Bennett is like a smaller offensive tackle, and the scheme would have 7 elite blockers to match the front 7, leaving just defensive backs who Hillis could plow over, or Charles could out class.
Pierre Garcon/Marques Colston
Pierre Garcon- An elite wide out with blazing speed and some of the best hands in the NFL, Garcon could very well re-sign with the Colts next year, but if Pioli is given the opportunity he needs to take advantage of that opportunity and bring him in. His presence would sure up the receiving corps. His previous season was one of underachievement but that was primarily due to the Colt's conspiracy to blow the whole 2011 NFL season in order to get Andrew Luck and the lack of a good quarterback. Would be a great addition due to his speed, elite hands, and experience.
Marques Colston- Has great numbers but that may be due to the production of Drew Bree's which will decrease due to the absence of Carl Nicks, Colston will not get a lucrative contract next year, so why shouldn't the chiefs bring in the big bodied, sure-handed receiver to flourish along with the likes of Dwayne Bowe and Jon Baldwin.Would be a great addition due to his great blocking, match up capabilities, and his ability to make plays. He or Garcon would be good additions
Side Notes-
Arian Foster is a Restricted Free Agent, but he can be attained without sacrificing a draft pick due to the fact that he was an undrafted free agent, its a matter of who can appeal more, and offer the more lucrative contract to Foster. So they Chiefs could also make moves to attain foster through free-agency.
The Chiefs could also make moves for Marshawn Lynch but that move i would not advise although he has brilliant occasional highlights i'm unsure about his production on a snap to snap basis.

good post, although I disagree with almost all these options, but well done post
if you could make it NOT bold type in the future it would easier to read (hint hint) but good work here … I just disagree on most (not all) of them

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
completely disagree...
I enjoyed the bold print, nice change up. well done.
i agree 12
The bold is a nice change from the normal font, it definitely makes posts easier to read on my mobile.
Look out for the CHIEFS in 2012!!!!!!
maybe it's my tired old eyes ... non-bold is easier for me

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
nice post.
More options would have been nice though kind of hard to put all there skill sets with the names when you have more though, personally as much as I want a great O-line i dont want to pay that much for a G.
I rec’d you.

Carl Nicks is not the best G in the NFL
Nicknames I have coined:
Jamaal Charles = 'Haley's Comet'
Shaun Smith = 'Big Nasty'
Kelly Gregg = 'Old Gregg'
Nice post...
I would like to have Nicks as it would add a young talent to our line, I no a lot of people dont want Finley as he has a case of dropsies at times, but he is one of the best blocking TE’s in the league and IMO that is Moeakis strongest ability so far as well, so the run game could get a boost from that. Also Moeaki is a fine receiving TE so that gives this team a dual inside threat kinda like NE has with there TEs, a lil less athletic than NEs TEs but a good fit for Charles.
Id pass on hillis as Im feel he has lost a step from the way he runs. I like the mathup options and speed of Reece but dont feel he really fits our system.
Overall good write skitzo.
don't know if you've seen it ... I think on the weekly Free Agent thread ...
Chiefs_Swagger got about 4 of 5 blockquotes about Finley from Acme Packing Company … and they weren’t very nice … he seems like a very “me first” type of guy (not a team player)

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Hard to say, since were not in that locker room.
but Im just stating what he can bring to them team from a on the field standpoint, I dont know enough about him off the field. But I do feel like we have the veteran leadership now to somewhat handle him, and who knows, players play diff under diff coaches and Crennel has a nack for getting players to play his way for him.
true, just saying that's what he got from their fans ...
sort of the way we (Chiefs fans) think we know our players better than anyone else (and most of the time we do) the same could easily be said of Packers fans

I agree...
the packers fans know there players better, Im just saying I like what it could do for our team if everything works out, adds a passing threat plus opens up the run game more with the physical blocking.
YEP...
Its pretty easy to know what you got, when more of them show you on a consistent basis (packers)

Ok... I do get some things you said.
Like getting Hillis or Gaither maybe, perhaps Nicks if we can’t or don’t draft DeCastro.
But why would we get both, then move Albert? Not only is it costly, but we have an outstanding young RG in Asamoah.
Besides, Albert has been great at LT this year.

Is that how restricted free agency works?
I thought that teams could put certain tenders such as first round tenders, or a first and a third round tender. That way, if a team offers a contract to that player, they have to compensate that team with whatever the tender is. That’s how I thought restricted free agency works.
by supersoccersteven on Jan 22, 2012 8:34 PM CST reply actions
you're pretty much on target
A restricted free agent is a player who has received a “qualifying” offer (negotiated in the CBA) from his old club, but is free to negotiate with any club through the free agent signing period. If he accepts an offer sheet from a new club, his old club can match the offer and retain him, or not match the offer and possibly receive draft-choice compensation depending on the amount of its qualifying offer.
If an offer sheet is not executed, the player’s rights revert to his old club after the free agent signing period ends.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Here is my Free Agents.
QB- Jason Cambell- worked with zorn, better than cassell and orton, dump cassell via trade i dont care what you get 7th rounder for all I care. keep stanzi as the #2, draft another QB later in the draft.
RB- resign mcclain as our FB/#3RB he gives you versitility and opens up a spot on the roster you really cant beat that.
RB- Ronnie Brown- he can make big plays and wear down a defense in the process should be great to go with JC.
WR- Dwayne bowe- personally Im not huge on him but, he is our guy and he does have skills if he could just catch the ball and hold onto it more often would be great. earn that money. with the signing of bowe, having breaston ( my personal favorite of the WR’s on the chiefs ), baldwin, im not seeing much more room for big time WR’s. If we could bring in EDDIE ROYAL fairly cheap ( highly doubtful ) that would be awesome. odds are its to expensive to do that, would like ryan broyles if you can get him later in the draft cause of his injury I think that he would be a steal and a great addition.
TE- Scott Chandler- every chiefs fan should remember this guy, when on buffalo he killed us all game long.
C- Dan Coppen- move hudson to LG, hudson allows you to already have a backup at C if need be.
G- Chilo Rachal- Good Run blocker ( depth )
T- Barry Richardson- Depth
T- Demitrius Bell- gives you a solid RT, he is better at Run Blocking and above average at Pass Blocking
NT- Paul Soliai- we have no real NT at this point how this is not our top need in the draft is confusing? pick this guy up and let powe develop I guess.
DE- Brodick Bunkley- this guy was huge for denver why not take him.
DE- Chris Hoke- This guy plays NT for the steelers also right?
let gilberry walk, trade dorsey, I like dorsey but its not working out like we all want and personally im tired of making excuses for him pick up draft pick for him.
ILB- Dqwell Jackson- this might be to expensive if so go Joe Mays, if mays is to expensive go back to jovan belcher if you can get either of the first two let belcher walk we got siler but none of us know anything about him that he is anything but depth, if they already seen enough that he is our guy resign belcher for depth.
CB- Terrell Thomas- great in run support should be fairly cheaper than carr cause he is coming off an injury but when healthy he is a above average #2.
NOTICE CARR WALKS? He is going to cost to much to keep sometimes you just gotta let a guy go for the benifit of the team.
S- Reggie Nelson- if cheap for depth.
S- Brandon Meriweather- former New England, he has talent, would only want him if pioli can do his magic and get him fairly cheap regardless I like berry and lewis as the starters whoever we get just dont ever want to see mcgraw again.
Your probably thinking no way that many Free Agents, well now that we have pretty much all depth and starters covered trade all picks for RGIII, if you cant do it then you got cambell if you can well bye cambell your no longer needed unless you want RGIII to sit a year.
by the great thunderlips on Jan 22, 2012 9:14 PM CST reply actions 1 recs
just please dont resign mcgraw or pope.
lilja would be on here also but he is not a FA wish we would cut him.

You should have written a post. This is pretty good.
Especially don’t resign McGraw or Pope and sign Cambell.
I don't see a problem with signing McGraw.
He’s good depth. He’s not outstanding at all, but he makes plays, and as a backup, he’s more than adequate.
He’s not a starter by any means, but if he’s just spelling Berry/Lewis for a play or two here or there, I’m OK with him on the team.
So you fire McGraw
and keep Piscatelli? McGraw is the veteran leadership of a young secondary that needs to be kept, not as a starter but for depth.
I wouldn't ever set out to hurt anyone deliberately unless it was, you know, important -like a league game or something. - Dick Butkus

That's a universally true statement.
The less your backups are on the field the better.
Kind of the point, really.
It's no fun if I have to explain it.

DeCastro (LG) – Osemele (RT) in first two rounds, or …
DeCastro and Dwayne Allen (still leaves RT postion to fill)
I just do NOT like what I hear about Finley (as per Chiefs_Swagger who did some research and got fanquotes from Acme Packing Company) … Steve_Chiefs mentioned a guy in his Weapons Post

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
That's good info, much of which I didn't already know.
Ugh, I swear I think I may just be better off to lock myself someplace dark and quiet until the day after the draft and just go ask, “Well, what did we get?”
It's no fun if I have to explain it.
Ha. Thanks, i needed a good laugh.
QB- Jason Cambell- worked with zorn, better than cassell and orton,
Fire Scott Pioli + hire Captain Hindsight = Superbowl.

Take Bowe away, and Breaston will not be your favorite wide receiver.
Dwayne bowe- personally Im not huge on him but, he is our guy and he does have skills if he could just catch the ball and hold onto it more often would be great. earn that money. with the signing of bowe, having breaston ( my personal favorite of the WR’s on the chiefs ),
Give me Bowe’s YAC all day over Breaston’s hands. Bowe’s catching issues are overblown. It’s a small problem compared to the amount of offense he generates.

take Bowe away and Breaston is almost the only wide receiver
Baldwin has yet to prove himself

Is this a list of options or all the players you believe we should sign?
Because there’s no way to accomplish all of those signings, or even half of them. Even with our salary cap situation. Unless we let Carr and Bowe both walk, then MAYBE…
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.

That said
If we targeted several of these guys that’d be nice. Signing Nicks would certainly free up options for us come draft day, and Reece is an excellent FB if McClain cannot be retained.

Here's a thought
why not sign Marcel to be an H-back type player.FB,TE for blocking or catching.Solid option along w/McClain.
John Soellner
Honestly, I don't see enough snaps to justify paying both

Reece can't block
Please bring back McClain.

I really like this list, especially Paul Soliai getting a true NT like him would be the best signing
Agree.
Need that beef.

reese and foster can not be had without giving draft compensation
being a restricted free agent means getting a certain “round” qualifying tender offer. so, for instance, arian foster will be given a first round tender offer to which he could sign or choose not to. if another club offers a better contract offer, they will owe the texans a first round pick. at least this is my understanding of the process. one thing i’m sure of is that just because you have an undrafted rfa it doesn’t mean you can lose them without compensation.
The only players I hurt with my words are the ones who have an inflated opinion of their ability. I can't worry about that.

Reese also can't block for anything so not sure what linebackers he's eating up.

Peyton Hillis is a head case.. a me guy.. stay away.. Jermichael Finley has hands of stone in the cold. Too inconsistant.. I wouldn’t evengive him a thought. Useless when it counts. We have a fine receiving corps if we can hold onto Bowe. Breaston was a fantastic addition and Copper and Baldwin will improve big time next year.. We don’t need receivers, we need a QB who can get them the ball where they can catch them. Orton is that guy. Fling Cassel..
I would rather see...
Marshawn Lynch, Mike Tolbert, Jason Snelling, BJGE, than Peyton Hillis…
Nicks should be the primary target
Not that high on anyone else all that much. Mike Tolbert would be fun and a nice bruising back. Would like to see some QB with starting experience signed – thought we should have signed Troy Smith who signed last week with the Steelers.
