Saturday Night Open Thread

Good evening everyone. The wife and I are about to head out and brave the cold for a short walk to catch dinner. We actually got a bit of snow here in DC last night, which is giving a nice winter look to the city.

This is your Saturday night open thread. Use it to talk about whatever you want. Unfortunately, the big news now is that Joe Paterno isn't doing so well.

Back to Mehico City tomorrow morning… Good thing, too. I’ve run out of Mezcal.

I do not miss the bumpy roads, however.

Bottom line is

Paterno made a big mistake. Every1 makes mistakes and some r worse than others, he said it himself and regrets it. He gave 62 years of his life for a school and his whole legacy shouldn’t be ruined because of 1 mistake he made.. Any1 who thinks he deserves what he got obviously has never made a mistake before

Don't ask me why, but I was looking at some olympic stuff.

And the way they award gold medals favors some sports way more than others. China won the total gold medal count, but only because they won a million from gymnastics. While the USA is way more dominant at basketball than China is at gymnastics, and we only got two golds from it.

We need to push the Olympic people to include dunk contests and three point shooting as events so we can get more medals. They should also consider 1-on-1 and 2-on-2 tournaments, because that’d be awesome to see.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be too concerned about taxes.

I know that even if I end up in some shitty job, I’ll still have a quality of life better than the vast majority of people on earth. And when I do pay taxes, I’ll be glad to know that my money is going to help improve the country. Or, at least it should.

Honestly, I think that if we just shifted money around we’re spending about the right amount. And most people are paying the right amount of taxes. We just need to raise taxes on the rich and corporations and our financial problems would be solved.

Please tell me you don’t believe all of that! If you work for it, you should be allowed to achieve it. Plain and simple. If you’re capable of making the most of your education and you have the work ethic to make the most of it, you’ll be concerned about all of the above.

But I don't think I deserve that much money.

My parents were fairly well off. I only had a job because they thought it would be good for me. They bought my car and paid for insurance and gas. They paid for my cell phone. They paid for my college. All I did was study without having to worry about much else.

I’m only where I’m at because my parents were able to provide for me. I would gladly be willing to part with some of my money to give others the same opportunity I had. If giving up all the premium channels on a giant HD TV means giving a kid in a poor neighborhood a better chance at making it, I would do that in a second.

I totally appreciate that sentiment. I agree with it completely. I admire it actually. However, that being said, if it’s forced upon me, I have a huge problem with it. Charity is a voluntary thing. When it’s mandated, it ceases to be charity and becomes socialism.

by GenericBrand on Jan 21, 2012 9:56 PM CST up reply actions

Why wouldn't they?

I bet they’ll make more money from the London game than any game they play in St. Louis. Plus, if they don’t move to L.A., they might try and pull off a move to London. It only doesn’t make sense for teams like us who have more than 20 fans attend games that aren’t rooting for the visitor.

by wustl_chiefs_fan on Jan 21, 2012 9:56 PM CST up reply actions

That would be fine by me.

The more disinterested the fans are the easier it is to move the team.

by wustl_chiefs_fan on Jan 21, 2012 10:04 PM CST up reply actions

A couple reasons.

1. If they move, it means St. Louis is more likely to show Chiefs games (even though I plan on never coming back after graduation).

2. St. Louis doesn’t deserve an NFL team. They are the only NFL city where football isn’t the most popular sport.

3. I’ve grown to hate St. Louis, so this would give me another reason to laugh at them.

New Dolphins coach Joe Philbin is reportedly considering Bengals DBs coach Kevin Coyle for his defensive coordinator.

Wasn’t this the reason why McCoy was turned away? If they actually let Bowles go, Pioli/Crennel need to get his ass in KC.

Mid Round QB Mr. Pioli
No player impressed this week as much as UT-Chattanooga QB B.J. Coleman, who went 10-of-15 for 168 yards and a touchdown on Saturday. Possessing prototypical size (6’3/234) and a rocket arm, Coleman is the lone potential NFL starting QB among the Shrine prospects. Originally projected as a mid-to-late round pick, Coleman’s stock is rising steadily.

I also wouldn't be surprised with Osweiler from ASU

But he may be more of a project than Pioli is willing to bank on.

One thing that kinda concerns me though is these young quarterbacks picking up bad habits from Cassel or Palko. Imagine Palko walking over to Stanzi and saying “when it doubt, just throw it as far as you can”. I mean for Palko that’s roughly 15 yards but still.

by GenericBrand on Jan 21, 2012 10:29 PM CST up reply actions

I think Foles is going to move up, and I just don't see Pioli taking a QB in the first 3 rounds

Maybe, possibly the third…but definitely not the first two. I wonder if he’d still take a QB in the draft if we landed Flynn. Cassel, Flynn and Stanzi? I know he wants to draft a QB every year but you’d have to think it’d be a luxury at that point.

by SoCalChief17 on Jan 21, 2012 10:31 PM CST up reply actions

He's only drafted one QB in three years.

I know he said he likes the Ron Wolf model of drafting QBs in most years, but there are a lot of other positions he’d like to draft in most years too, and you only have so many picks.

by Tarkus on Jan 21, 2012 10:33 PM CST up reply actions

I know he said he'd like to draft a QB every year

And I know that doesn’t mean that he will. I just couldn’t even imagine him thinking QB if we landed a decent free agent. If some big name fell sure, but it’d just be a wasted pick otherwise.

I really hope we hit a homerun this year though, especially if Emry takes off to the Bears.

I guess just growing up and always watching him, seeing all of the players he’s coached, the high standard that PSU held themselves to…it really sucks to see it all come crumbling down, in regards to everyone involved. I’m sure JoePa is going to die with the regret that he could’ve done more and didn’t.

Crennel is waiting for Dante Scarnecchia

I think why this OC search has been slow, silent and drug out is because Crennel is waiting for his old buddy from the Pats, Dante Scarnecchia to be OC. He’s an OL guru from what I know. I just think all these guys (Pioli, Crennel) given their jobs and reputations are on the line are going with the familiarity of the people responsible for helping create the Patriots’ dynasty. I can’t fault them for that, but if they are going to go down, they are going to go down with their own people, their way. But, thinking we are going to be Pats-Midwest version is a little far-fetched.

You are constantly worried about every possible contact and every twist and turn like it could happen again.

the good thing for charles is he still young with his acl injury

will the chiefs ever draft a Qb in the first round, not since todd blackledge in 83. and the chiefs could of had marino. OH well atleast 65 toss power trap worked for KC, it should be wide open red. Hank stram still the man.

as good as the medical science has become

these types of injuries have far less of an impact than they used to. I understand that it can take a player far longer to mentally get over it than physically.

If it was any other running back in the NFL I'd count them out.

Something about AP though that makes me think hes gonna pull through this and be just fine. Gut feeling I guess.

both valid arguments IMO

No knock on Charles

But I think rehabbing and having the same injury as Berry will help him. They are the same type of player when it comes to movement and I hate to say it but Berry is one of the most determined and dedicated athletes we have so being paired up with him can only help charles.

I was goin to bring this up also

Which in turn is also good news for Moeaki. These guys are going to be growing up together, and I’m sure they’re even closer now with rehab. Not quite sure if Siler is rehabbing in KC or not, but still. It’s nice to have so many people around with the same problem, and most on the same timetable.

good point

Another positive is alot of players come back better then ever from knees

The rehab for a knee is so grueling that alot of players come back in better physical condition then they’ve ever been in. The problem is for an athlete especially one that depends on cutting and quick movements(hockey players, berry, charles) it takes about 18 months to get back to 100%.

He'll be hitting his stride.

It’ll be a toss up between him and Peyton for SB MVP I think.

Nice.

My cousin and I were just discussing whether the torn ACL 3 will be the same when they return.

What kinda job?

My boss knows I’m a football person so she isn’t going to schedule me. I just accepted a promotion that usually makes me work 10-4 on Sundays but I negotiated my hours so I could still catch football.

Walmart Deli

I am going to talk to my manager and see if I can negotiate something. I will work an opening if I have to.

You can't try to swap with people?

Find a person that doesnt realize it’s superbowl and trade them. You have enough time in advance…

I am going to try.

Before the Donkey/Steeler game, the last game I watched was the SNF game against the Steelers.
