What If Haley's Paranoia Is True, but for a Reason?
There's always some reason for rumors.
Maybe someone wants to start a rumor to cause problems or gain a strategic edge, or maybe the rumor has some truth to it.
Let's assume, for the moment, that Haley's paranoia about Pioli's excessive security measures are true.
So the question is, why would Pioli do that?
Here's the evidence I see:The 1995 season ending.
The 1997 season ending.
The 2003 season ending.
We had what was arguably the best team in the NFL each of those 3 seasons. We lost at Arrowhead each of those seasons.
The 1995 season is the weakest example, perhaps. We lost due to weather and a lousy kicker.
But if 1995 is the weakest, 1997 is the strongest.
Denver beat us in KC. They started the game with vaseline smeared on their O-line's jerseys. They delayed the start of the game to wipe the stuff off, but Denver was not penalized in any way, shape, or form. They barely won, then went on to win the Super Bowl.
Later, it turned out they violated the salary cap rules in their Super Bowl-winning seasons. So if they are willing to cheat the salary cap and try to cheat to give their O-line an advantage, what else are they doing?
I still believe they stole our Super Bowl win. And who knows how many Super Bowls Marty might have won once the monkey was off his back...he would have stayed the course and not gotten desperate and the Monday Night Meltdown would never have happened.
So maybe we were too open then. Maybe the Chiefs were too naive.
2003 is similar. The story is that our defense was too weak to stop anyone. That they figured out the formula to beat us and we just couldn't plug the holes. I also have believed the problem was losing Maz, that he read the other team's offenses and made adjustments that made our defense work, and w/o him we just weren't good enough on defense.
But although it is commonly pointed out that we never made the Colts punt in that game, they never made us punt, either.
But they won. Their offense wasn't as good as ours. Their defense wasn't as good as ours. But they won. What if they had an unfair competitive advantage to make the difference?
Lately, the rumor is that Denny Thum was let go after Pioli went through his archived emails and phone records...
What if Thum leaked information? On purpose or inadvertently, either one, it doesn't matter.
Other people have been let go, too. It is easy to build complete information by getting one piece each from a dozen or more people. No person gives up anything significant...but together you end up with a complete picture.
Is that what has happened in KC in the past? Have we given away games? Seasons?
Think of all the games we should have won that we have inexplicably lost.
Think of all the seasons we ended up just short.
Think of how many times we had a decent team but got totally humiliated in the playoffs.
1995. 1997. 2003. 2006. 2010.
Maybe we were too lax. Maybe someone leaked our game plan in 2006. We weren't *that* bad. We weren't *that* bad in 2010, either. Maybe the Raiders got some inside information, and being our rivals, shared it with the Ravens.
Sure, this is paranoia.
But it makes a lot of inexplicable failures and losses and humiliations much more understandable.
I don't know if I believe any of this, even as I write it.
But what if Pioli *is* obsessed with security, and what if he has a damn good reason to be, because the Chiefs have thrown away 2-3 Super Bowl winning seasons by being too lax about information?

Any time my boss
Doesn’’t talk to me for a week I get paranoid. I bet Haley was working on months of not hearing from Pioli. I don’t blame him.

I always felt the opposite
Any time my boss did not talk to me for a week… I knew that he/she had confidence that I could handle any situation that may have come up and make the right decisions.
It’s when the boss starts hanging around and micro managing me that I get worried.

what isn't logical?
It’s not logical to assume that if the boss isn’t breathing down your neck… then you’re doing something right?
as far as Haley is concerned.. I have no clue if he and Pioli were or were not communicating… and if they were.. weather they were in agreement or opposition. I wasn’t there.
I was just going off on a tangent concerning the “boss not talking to you” paranoia

I don't think that was "off on a tangent
a perfectly logical and valid thing … all workplaces should be that way

This is what I've been saying.
It’s probably not true. One would think there would be more evidence if it were. However, if it is true there is probably more to it. I might do the same thing to protect the Chiefs.

Ok Pioli .... we know it's you who wrote this ... come on man!
Yeah sure …. this is a load of revisionist crap. We just lost those games … no reindeer games and the CARDINAL isn’t feeding the enemy our game strategy. It’s as likely that Hoffa ran the player’s union and had the games fixed as this being the reason we lost.
I think this is offensive to accuse anyone of such things. ive seen coaches taken down by serious claims that were deemed false
ive seen career’s ruined, and men who loved this sport more than anything lose everything because people ran with a story.
innocent til proven guilty, to think the losing in kc was a conspiracy….do you know how many people would be involved, which equals and ends up with failure, and a leak.
please dont start this
to haley’s credit, he has not made a single comment since being fired about anything chiefs related hinted at stuff like that. prob signed a contract forcing him to do so, but regardless, i was around that 03 team with dick vermeil, every single game in 2003. every hotel i stayed with the team. there is no freaking way those guys were throwing games, or anyone involved
denny thum should be innocent til proven otherwise

Please.
It has less to do with secrets and a lot more to do with QB play (Bono), bad luck (97) and just terrible, awful defense (2003).
The reality is none of those teams were the best team in the NFL. The 1995 Chiefs weren’t even close, the 03 Chiefs were held back by a really bad defense with basically 0 playmakers. The 1997 Chiefs were probably a top 5 team, maybe top 3, but it’s debatable if they would have beaten Green Bay.
and the bad luck that in 2003 they immediately faced the one team that could beat them at their own game
ie, a team with a killer offense and not much defense … the Colts, Manning at his best … a duel! touche, Sir!

compared to the Ravens? oh hell yeah we were that bad … it would have been worse but the Ravens were so surprised by our badness they couldn’t score more than FG’s for awhile due to the shock

your Uncle said it or your Aunt said it.

Any mature industry moves towards perfect competition.
And the NFL is purposely set up to make the competition as perfect as possible. In that situation, the tiniest advantage is magnified. I personally feel that drawing the shades in the offices is a bit extreme, but so is sorting through a refuse pile, to gain intel on a competitor, and that sort of corporate espionage goes on all the time in all kinds of industries.
Certainly cheating is a way to gain an edge. I’m against that. But winning championships WITHIN THE RULES calls for something extra, maybe to the extent of pathological attention to the details. I think we want to win a SB, and do it fair and square, but maybe some don’t like what it takes to do it. Maybe by the time you’re obsessive enough to win that ring, you’re no longer having much fun or AS much fun…
Could be that a lot of the things we love about the game, including lots of insider news pieces, are the exact same things that stand in our way to the top of the NFL heap.
would of ≠ would've
Agree
It is the ultimate social experiment . The league sets it up so the bad teams can be good and makes it more difficult for the top teams to stay on top. Yet, every year the same top teams are in the playoffs/Super Bowl.

What if Haley's paranoia is true for a reason?
Like, you know, because he’s doing mounds of cocaine.
It is time to anoint the Stanzi. He is The One.
Lets put this dog to sleep
We lost in 1997, because Marty in all his genius, decided that a QB coming off a broken collar bone, who hadn’t played in a month, who was a statue in the pocket, was somehow better than Rich Gannon that won 5 games for us.
We lost in 03 , because we had no defense to speak of. Zilch, zero, nadda, nihil. I don’t think Mazlowskey would have made any difference. All we needed was 1 stop…just 1. And Gregg Williams couldn’t even do that. Worse yet, Vermeil refused to fire the guy, which wrecked our chances of winning the next 2 years.
We lost in 06 because frankly, we shouldn’t have been there to begin with. 100 things had to happen that day for us to even get in.It was a joke to begin with.
We didn’t win last year, because we played a last place schedule and Haley couldn’t beat a team with a winning record. Plain and simple
this isn’t a riddle wrapped in an enigma, wrapped in a mystery, wrapped in a conspiracy. We haven’t won because of bad coaching/personnel decisions. We have no one to blame but the people at the top for this calamity .
