For What It's Worth ...

There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware
I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Well now, isn't this interesting. Kent Babb does a bit of investigative reporting and the Chiefs don't like it. Now the Chiefs have apparently taken further steps to seal off One Arrowhead Drive, and have reportedly done everything but "declare war" on the Kansas City media, or at least Babb himself.
There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind
I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Arrowhead Pride is divided: One one hand we have some who think Pioli and the Chiefs are simply "taking care of business" and doing what any successful corporation would do, because after all, football is indeed a business and counts most is results. Indeed, it might be said that results are ONLY things that count, and those are counted exclusively on the field of play.
On the other hand there are those of us who feel that the ends do not always justify the means, and even though the NFL is a business, any business is only as good as the people who work for it, and people should be treated with dignity and respect and not work in an atmosphere of secrecy, fear of intimidation and reprisals.
And so we have our back and forth discussions, fan vs fan ... our very own little civil war it would seem.
What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side
It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
In some ways there's a very clear and distinct parallel with our situation as Chiefs fans and the "occupy" movement that has swept across America. The divisiveness that now appears more and more often in our comments is a backlash to some heavy handed tactics by Chiefs' top brass, who seem oblivious to negative public perception in their dealings with the press. Ask any magician: perception is everything ... what makes a magic show enjoyable isn't believing that the magic tricks are real, we all know they aren't, we know they're illusions, trickery. No, they're enjoyable to us because we WANT to be fooled, we DON'T want to "dig deep" for the truth behind the illusion. The fun lies in the perception that the magic is somehow real.
But just as magic isn't real, all too often what we perceive as the truth isn't any more real than the illusions of David Copperfield or Houdini. Allowing ourselves to be fooled by a stage act of magic is all well and good, but allowing ourselves to be tricked by our leaders, be it in government, business or our favorite sports teams, is to deny the truth and walk a slippery slope of self-denial. Ten million out of work Americans understand, as do tens of millions of others across the country and countless millions more across the globe. "Them that has shall get, them that's not shall lose." God bless the child and the Chiefs fan. and the rest of the world.

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away
We better stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, now, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Maybe Haley had more of a reason to be afraid than any of us can imagine. Maybe not. But one thing is clear to anyone with open eyes and open mind: the extremes of the Chiefs current administration are making it harder and harder to support the team as a fan and as a human being. If even half of Babb's recent article is true, and one can't help but suspect more and more that it is, the Chiefs are rapidly approaching a confidence crisis from their fanbase that could have disastrous results for the long-term. I love my country, but I don't always agree with the leaders of my country, nor should anyone blindly agree. The old phrase "America, love it or leave it" is wrong on a prima facie basis and should be "America, if you love it then you'll help fix what's wrong" and the same could be said of the Chiefs organization. I love the team, but I don't always agree with every decision, nor should I ... nor should you.

I just hope that we have a winning season next year.
Great post! This story has been around for a week already and will not die. I just hope it does not distract our organization from improving the product on the field.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Why? Why have a motive or a version, other than wanting to know what actually happened?
Too many people want to just jump into a witch hunt and crucify “the Man” whether there’s any wrongdoing or not.
And conversely, too many others refuse to consider the possibility that the organization is in the wrong.
Fragile egos result in the overbearing desire to be right far more than wanting to know what actually happened.
It's no fun if I have to explain it.

Yeah. Gotta trick people into believing that being right more often means changing your mind without a fuss,
when you see that you’re wrong. And seeing when you’re wrong. Pisses people off, because you don’t see changing your mind as a defeat, so they never score any big wins. “Oh? Thanks for the fact-check. You’re right.”

Seriously, there obviously ARE issues, or this story wouldn’t have become a story.
Micro-management, ruling by fear, intense secrecy for the sake of secrecy don’t work. It only builds a house of cards that eventually falls. I see it at my company every day…the business units and departments that run like this continually have issues – the ones that do not operate this way are successful. I don’t need much more proof than that of what works and doesn’t.

Even if...
We know every play another team is going to run during a game they would still win. If the Chiefs made it to be one of the better team’s year in and year out, I might worry about secrecy…
For now, we can know exactly what the other team is doing and they will still line up and punch us in the mouth.
and look at it this way ...
every team in the NFL knows what Brady is going to do … announcers know, fans watching at the game know, fans watching at home know, the defenses lined up across from the guy know …
“Brady fires, he finds Gronkowski in the seam … touchdown, Patriots!”
so everyone knows, and the point? yeah, like they need the secrecy …

Denial is not just a river in Egypt.
Denial is an obstruction that prevents one’s first steps toward recovery and improving one’s situation.
We have seen this story play out before. A public disgust of it’s leadership is intensified and broadened by obfuscation, deceit and refusals to admit errors and wrongdoing. If success breads success, why hide one’s journey along this path? Why not shout from the roof tops your intent and your progress toward your goals. To coverup your lack of success speaks of failure and unwillingness to face needed change. When ego and pride get in the way of change, the truth is often feared. Fearing being found wrong can impeed success when one sees change as having to admit failure. If a tree falls in a forest and nobody is around to hear it, did it make a noise? You can’t be wrong if nobody finds out , right?
The truth will set you free….. as long as that is your intent.

or so I hear :-)
it’s not the need for change or success that’s the issue here, rather the methods used to affect that change … there’s a difference between the two, and it seems to some of us that ego and pride are dictating those methods to instill fear itself

Yeah, change for the sake of change is not always what it is cracked up to be. Success is often defined differently by those seeking it. For many of us it is not just the destination it is also about the journey. Yeah we want results but we also want “Process”. A process that is befitting of the desired result.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Reminds me of another story this year...where there were "rumors" for some time that
were ignored…now Sandusky is facing trial and there are STILL people defending those that turned a blind eye….
Before anyone says it – I’m not comparing the severity of the accusations, just the attitudes of those who ignored it long before an actual indictment was in place.
I’m also not saying that all the accusations from sources in Babb’s story are true in their entirety because none of us know that. But the fact that it even became a story…and all the issues that have arisen over this past year – leaked negative stories towards Haley from inside the moat that weren’t addressed & ‘accidental’ phone calls to the media – point to trouble in paradise.
At the very least, it’s not a positive atmosphere and I for one Chiefs fan don’t want to see this type of negative attitude bleeding over onto my team (into the football side of the biz). Compartmentalizing in an organization doesn’t work any better than it does for individuals – negativity breeds negativity throughout the whole.

the school administrators are too busy handing out education budget money to politicians, contractors, and their co-administrators...
…to pay attention to bullies.
And the teachers keep paying thier union dues to re-inforce a system where admins can piss away tax dollars at will on ANYTHING other than education….. with their heads in the sand.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
I don't doubt it...
but the point is that the REAL issue is corruption inside the administration.
Public education spending in the USA accounts for significantly more tax dollars per student than anywhere else in the entire world. There is no shortage of funding in any way, shape, or form.
There is just massive corruption and miss-use of hundreds of millions of dollars every year.
Unions collect money to from teachers.
That money is used to prop up politicians and board members, and to assure that it costs (2008 figure… $70,000 in legal fees to fire ANY teacher… no matter how horrible of a job they are doing). That money (court costs, legal fees) comes out of the education budget.. not out of union fees. The board members and politicians make sure it stays that way.
Politicians that are elected off the back of the unions return the favor by adding more school districts to a city/state. When in reality, we don’t need more districts and more administrators. We need more good teachers and the proper tools to teach with… from computers to crayons..and everything in between.
Each additional school district requires a board of 3 to 10 administrators (and their salaries.. paid for from the education budget)… Those admins require secretaries, and offices, and computers, and desks, and trash pick up, and electricity, and janitorial staff, and pensions, and insurance, and petty cash budgets, and…and…and….
Those administrators and politicians decide who gets to build the schools (kickbacks galore), what land (and from whom) they are going to buy it, which contractor gets the jobs for electricians, plumbers, cement workers, etc etc…
Admin and politicians collect on kickbacks, favors, and votes in exchange for handing out those lucrative contracts….. and all of it comes out of the tax dollars set aside for education.
On average, less than 34% (again 2008 numbers) of all education dollars are actually spent in the classrooms on teachers, buildings, supplies, or educational tools (computers etc..)
The vast majority of tax payer dollars are dumped into administrative costs, expense accounts, kick backs, and legal fees.
All that corruption starts with union dues being used to elect the school board members and politicians that support and engage in the corruption. Cut off their funding…and you have a fighting chance to fix the system. Everything the union does started with good intentions, but the system is so broken that’s it’s little more than a road to hell now.

Fascinating figures
I see it much like a situation where people keep sending relief money to Africa, yet things don’t improve in many places. If there is corruption in a system (now to be fair, teacher unions aren’t nearly the monsters those in charge of some african states are), throwing more money will do little.
Although some blame for the failure of our education system must fall on parents as well. Every study I’ve looked at shows that the most important factor in a child’s education is parental participation.

I agree.. parents have to wake up to the fact that it's not the schools responsibility to raise their children, just educate them
The parents have to hold up their end by making sure their kids are doing the work, and getting any extra help they need.
I’m not trying to vilify teachers… by any degree. But the unions they pay their dues in to long ago stopped putting the people they get their money from first. And they don’t even put education in the top 10.
Every year the budgets for education go up and up and up… and the results in the classroom go down and down… throwing more money at the problem won’t fix anything, because lack of money isn’t he problem. Corruption, and lack of accountability are the problems.

MN is 100% in what he says about parent involvement ... it's THE single most important factor
I’ll also point out that w/o the unions, very good teachers are sent packing because the admin’s want/have to save money on The Bottom Line
I agree that “throwing money at the problem” won’t fix it … what will fix it? honestly? go right ahead and toss out the vast majority of admins … and by that I mean the Super’s and their staff, useless at best … then toss out a good majority (not all) of Principals and put in some of the top teachers to run the schools
next start holding kids accountable … if they don’t do the work, they don’t pass, period (and I’m not talking about the SpEd kids, if those kids give a SOLID good faith effort, fine) … if kids are absolute terrors, send them home for a week, with plenty of work to do
seriously, I’ve been in a school here recently where some of the staff was telling me a “directive” from admin that the kids (HS) are NOT to be given a failing grade regardless of what they do (or don’t do)
just as at Arrowhead, those teachers are employees who have to do as they’re told … if they don’t like it (and they don’t!) what recourse is there? (maybe I should call Kent Babb)
and WHY do we have that pressure to pass kids on and on and on? parents! you betcha … you want to talk about accountability? start at home … the parents
it ain’t the teachers, my friend … you have my word on it

In JUST Newark… over 400 administrators making over $100,000 PER YEAR …..coming out of the education budget.. and that doesn’t include the cost of their offices, staff, computers, power, water …..
Just in salaries paid to administrators.
How many teachers could we hire for $40,000,000 per years? How about buying computers? What if we add in all the other admin. expenses to that pool? One city… $40,000,000 a year of teacher administrator salaries….. Why isn’t this money being spent to educate children?

Oh I agree..
Get rid of all the unnecessary admins, hold students accountable.
Either you pass, or you fail. There is no grey area, and no one (especially parents) gets to force a child’s unearned advancement.
BUT… if you have a teacher that has a history of being unable to do the job, or one that’s involved in abuse, sexual abuse, illegal activities (even outside of the school.. like dealing drugs or multiple DUI charges etc)… then that teacher has got to go.
If 150 teachers in a school can regularly get their students to average out with passing marks…. but 2 others continually for multiple years to achieve results…. it’s time for those 2 teachers to go back to school, or find another job. Incompetence cannot be tolerated

I agree ... and yeah, if a teacher isn't cutting it (or is doing something wrong/illegal) then seeya
nobody wants incompetence in a school, least of all other teachers … just remember that as it is, a teacher cannot FORCE a child to learn, or really to do much of anything
it’s that whole accountability part that’s missing … teachers have less and less “control” in what happens, and kids “run the schools” becasuse they CAN and they know it
if a kid SAYS a teacher is doing this or that, the teacher is removed immediately on the say-so of the kid (who could well be a straight F student who doesn’t like Miss Jones because she actually wants him to work and not to disrupt the classroom) … the unions do one good thing: they protect the rights of the teacher
as it is right now, a kid is disruptive, maybe out of class for 5 minutes then right back in … consequences? forget it … used to be principal would do SOMETHING, no longer the case now … suspend kids? nah, parents won’t let that heppen
empower the teachers, get rid of the admins and watch student achievement go up … I guarantee it

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
The passing students along regardless
is the biggest issue, IMO, facing our schools today. I teach 7th and 8th grade and I see at least 20-30 kids, per day, who cannot read on or above grade level. We have scores of kids reading at a 3rd grade level. This should not be the problem of a 7th/8th grade language arts teacher. These children should have never gotten to this level…period.
So, teachers that don’t get results aren’t always necessarily at fault. Again, there are shitty teachers out there…I know this. That being said, what is a teacher, with a secondary degree, supposed to do with a student that can’t even comprehend the material the teacher is supposed to be presenting? Add that to the ridiculously long laundry list of facts over which these kids are annually assessed and you have a recipe for disaster. When I was teaching Ancient World History (to 6th graders, who really can’t handle that abstract of a subject), they were required to know Rome, Greece, American Revolution, American Westward Expansion, Early Colonial History, Discovery of America, the Maya, India, China, European History, and Native American History. That is a lot.
Much of it is from their 3rd or 4th grade curriculum. It’s tough to remember things from two years prior, I don’t care how proficient in a skill you are. Add to this that elementary schools now have basically forsaken Social Studies because they are so stressed (because of that damn assessment) on reading and math. How are these kids supposed to be competent and how can a teacher get through all that (most of it outside the curriculum) before the test in March or April? It is not possible.
All I ask is that those who would bash public education, please understand the whole picture before you bash the educators. Teaching today is like coaching a football team without all the proper equipment and being forced to win State every year…if you don’t they’ll take away the stuff you have until you win State. Doesn’t make much sense.

well stated ... of course, you really only scratch the surface of the things teachers have to deal with
ahhhhhhh I do wish people could/would understand a bit more … great analogy, btw!
and it’s true … do more with less, which makes it worse, and then you get less to work with because of that so you naturally do worse still and then … ok, time to retire so they can get a brand new little league coach on the job for those kids who made the 2008 Chiefs look good, and the coach has never been a head coach before, no playbooks by the way … NOW go win that state title

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
The problem is corruption and the problem is power.....
…. and the problem is that absolute power corrupts absolutely. By definition the problem is not at the bottom where little power exists. The problem is where power seeks to protect its power more than any other objective. Any threat to the power is seen as something to be neutralized, covered up or swept aside. No worthwhile intention can be more important than protecting the position of those who wield the power in place.
Paterno was not just a figurehead. Paterno was not just the throne. Paterno was the face of the power behind the throne. Nobody below or above Paterno wanted to upset the applecart. Nobody cared about right or wrong. The flow of money and power had to be protected.
It does not matter if the organazation is a Government, a School Administration, an Athletic Program, a Union or Big Business, after an organization grows beyond critical mass in terms of power the prime directive becomes self protection instead of any original aims or objectives no matter how well intentioned.

So what do teachers have to do with this?
Many join the union simply for the protections it provides. Kids today are not the same as we were, man. They are a different breed. However, my disdain for unions has kept me out of it.
I run a classroom that is supposed to be an enrichment room, where I am supposed to take the kids that are excelling and take them BEYOND their current curriculum and core needs and broaden their horizons. I am to do this in a room that has no technology, no computers (or access to them, not even a lap top cart), and a limited copy budget. There isn’t a lot that I can do. Add to that the fact that I don’t even really get to assign grades so I have no stick to ensure the kids actively participate.
I am not arguing that your stats are inaccurate. I completely agree that every school district in the nation (especially mine) is top-heavy to the max and has profound waste in spending. That has nothing to do with teachers. Are there bad teachers out there that have been tenured and are kept in a job by that fact and the clout of unions? Sure. That is the case in any business. However, the majority of teachers (and good ones to boot) are on the verge of burnout, having to do more with less on a more frequent basis and still have to meet the arbitrary numbers of a worthless assessment to keep their jobs and keep their schools funded.
I have no quarrel if you want to bash the public education set-up as a whole. Just leave teachers out of it.

It's not censorship by definition.
A private entity has the right to protect it’s interests, whether that be intellectual property or public image. As an employee of a private enterprise, you agree to protect those interests, and if you do not, you risk reprisal.
If you don’t like your government, in this country, anyway, you have the right to air those concerns in a peaceful way.
Seriously.
IF, and I mean IF, a TV station chose to pull the alleged spot that Kent Babb refuses to give any specifics about, that is their business and theirs alone. It is not censorship, it’s a business decision. Plain and simple.
You can read into it all you want, but your time would be better spent watching daytime soaps.

here's what i don't get
there are lots of fans out there who say “as long as they win, i don’t care what they do.” and the sad thing is, i believe them. at some point a person has to have principles they believe in and are willing to stand up and speak out. i want to win as bad as anyone but i want to do it with good values, dignity and on the “up and up”. i just can’t get behind “if you’re not cheating, you’re not trying” or treating people like they are under constant surveillance and making them afraid to act in their jobs without fear of reprisal as an acceptable means to the end of winning.

How bout this?
Haley knew he was on his way out since last year after the Weiss thing and not living up to doin things how Pioli asked him to. So he sabotaged the season, first by losing every game to start, then when he saw the chance for this team to get Luck if they kept losing and coached to win enough to preclude that. What do your eyes tell you? Haley was giving the bird to Pioli and the team the whole season long
why would he think he was on the way out after leading the team to a 10-6 record and winning the division?

Not quite TC
but you are going in the right direction. Haley is definitely responsible for the team, he was in charge and that is undeniable. Steve points out that Haley “wasn’t the same guy” last year that he was two years ago. I am sure that their are many reasons for that, but he made an interesting comment last year about wishing that he had someone (a superior) that had faith in him, suggesting that he felt as though they did not. It’s very difficult to continue to be the same guy every day when you think your boss has no faith in what you are doing. The reason for that lack of faith is unknown at this point, but I have a feeling that this lack of faith is responsible for the yo-yoing of this team instead of the yo-yoing being the cause of the lack of faith. I believe that this divide between Haley and his superiors has been brewing for some time and I would like to know what that was all about. I am sure I will never get the real skinny here, but in all honesty, how does a coach roller coaster like Haley did? One explanation is that he had lost confidence in his organization’s support and was trying to be somebody that he was not…That is never a plan for success and it finally blew completely apart.

and to expand on that idea, if I may ...
… is it possible that a similar lack of faith in others (all those employees not on the team that were the center of Babb’s article) led to them doing things not as well as they should have?
ie, coming in and telling 150 people “everything you’re doing, and they you’re doing it, is bad and wrong” doesn’t tend to make people very comfortable about their jobs, and discomfort leads to lack of production and …
you get the idea

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
I see what you are saying
but this does not really define what his intentions were. If his philosophy remained constant, his actions may have needed to change in order to accomplish the goal. The leader of any organization absolutely must adjust their behavior in order to accomplish the organizations goals. What we are talking about with being the same guy every day is more about work ethic and attitude than it is about walking the same line day in and day out—especially where a leader is concerned.
"You gonna pull them pistols...or whistle Dixie?"

moreover, the group of people he was working with (players) changed every year
the guy was finding his way, trying to find what would or wouldn’t work (IMO) … I think it’s similar to a new teacher who goes out and reads a book on “best teaching practices” and tries WAY too hard to do EVERYTHING in the book … and you just cannot do that
you find what works FOR YOU and roll with, and adjust as needed along the way … and always be yourself (kids see thru a phony immediately, faster than most adults)

The TV station should tell the truth, and report the news....
Don’t give their opnion of what they think MIGHT have happened.
Don’t speculate in place of reporting facts.
and don’t editoralize about the issue.
Just the facts…..
and those facts should be reported reguardless of how it may make the city look. This is the exact problem with the so called news…. It’s become an industry where supporting their advertisers and padding their ratings to make more money has become MORE important than impartially reporting the facts. hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
They ALMOST had a story...
I think that Babb ALMOST had a story, and as you read through it you can feel him trying to steer the horse in the direction he wants it to go, but the story lacked evidence, and as much as everyone loves a good story, that’s exactly what it was – a good juicy story.
Don’t forget that when it comes right down to it, The Kansas City Chiefs are a business, owned by an individual. They are not part of a government faction, we don’t pay their salaries with our tax dollars, and what they do in the front office is really none of our damn business. I think that some of us have a kind of entitlement fantasy going on. Just because we sat on our butts in the stands or at home on the couch WATCHING the Chiefs play for years doesn’t mean that they owe us something for our “efforts”. Just like the Royals, as long as people keep buying tickets and $8 beers, why should they change anything? Except of course put in more places to buy $8 beers – oh wait, they Royals DID do that :)
Don't worry people! The Chiefs and Royals have a plan - they are going to save all of the cap money until the year 2037, THEN we're going to have a team buddy.

Totally agree with this, wrek'd
It’s “almost” a story. Babb tells us that he interviewed two dozen former employees & eight current employees. He then goes on to say that “some” of the employees basically felt like Uncle Joe Stalin had taken over…but never says how many. Two? Twenty? Nobody other than Babb knows. Also, Babb clearly paints a picture that he wants the audience to see…the story could have easily been written with a totally different slant, because he had opinions on both sides. As for Haley, what I can’t figure out is why he told Babb that “You’ll get a call in the next few days from a number you don’t recognize.” Does that strike anyone else as bizarre paranoia? Was Haley fearful for his safety…because that’s what this sounds like. You’d think he was being tracked by the CIA or FBI the way he was talking. Maybe he just finished watching Enemy of the State?
As for the office…if it’s truly a terrible work environment the Chiefs WILL lose most of their good people, and it will show up in the results. I think it’s really that simple.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
NEWS ... well said and you make some valid points
one thing to remember: stadium renovations and leases are very public matters … the bonds that redid the stadium a few years ago, back by public funds (same with the majority of stadiums across the country, paid for in part or wholly by publicly backed bonds in an age of economic hardship – and a many places are still hurting from those builds and bonds years after the fact)
tax breaks and incentives? you bet … and a MAJOR portion of league revenue (a league which is close to a monopoly, and legally) comes from TV (networks) which are funded by advertising dollars that come from every consumer in the form of higher goods … including the costs to the millions who could care less about football, they still have to pay part of the costs
everything affects everything else

Duly Noted Ups
You’re right, in a way the fans do help out the Chiefs org. Wouldn’t that suck though to own a company and have tens of thousands of people telling you how to run it?
Here’s a question for the master minds here: What does happen to an NFL team, or an MLB team like the Royals if the owner just says “screw everyone” and keeps all of the money and the team just loses for about 20 or 30 years in a row? Is there any recourse? Or do we just have a losing team for 20 or 30 years in a row? You guys know more than I do, can anyone answer that one for me?
Don't worry people! The Chiefs and Royals have a plan - they are going to save all of the cap money until the year 2037, THEN we're going to have a team buddy.

people stop going, ultimately … if the team loses enough (or gets few enough fans) eventually maybe they move … or get sold … or wait til Al Davis dies

good post
i like some buffalo springfield and the rest was ok too. =)
we should all be able and willing to challenge the process and understand that doing so doesn’t make disloyal or a bad fan, etc. i support the team but i’m not unable to craft my own thoughts about what they’re doing running it. i would go so far as to say those who follow blindly like sheep and just accept everything fed to them without ever questioning why are truly the bad fans.
The only players I hurt with my words are the ones who have an inflated opinion of their ability. I can't worry about that.

Well it seems
I told you so is appropriate. Ask anyone and they will tell you I have had absolutely no use for Pioli from the first. I did try to not be too vitriolic in my posts because it made me a pariah. And I was either ignored or demonized and my fandom was put in question. But I never liked the Patriots and their ways for a long time before Pioli came to town. I have never liked the idea of take no prisoners, or win at any cost. Altho it is a business, I was always naive enough to think of it as a game. A game that would be played according to the rules and those that didn’t would be punished and not be respected. I don’t get too concerned about stealing the other fellas signs and that sort of thing, maybe because i played a lot of baseball and it was a part of the game, but taping pracitces surreptiously, seems to me going too far. I guess what the lesson to be learned from all of this is that big money corrupts anything it touchs.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
it was a generic statement ... do you have a disagreement with it?
as for the Patriots (and the issue with the Broncos last year) rules have indeed been broken in the name of “The Patriot Way” … and that includes when Pioli was with The Patriots
that entire mentality of “anything goes and it’s legal if you don’t get caught” is, at least to some of us, wrong … just plain wrong
when we had Shaun Smith last year and he was grabbing player’s balls, I said a number of times it was wrong, and I got the same “if you’re not cheating, you’re not trying” line from a LOT of bloggers on here as “justification” for classlessness and unsportsmanlike conduct

Jim,
This
I have never liked the idea of take no prisoners, or win at any cost.
is an idea that is the cornerstone of how I feel about the Chiefs. While we want to win, we never want to do it by being opressive or cheating. It’s why I want nothing to do with McDaniels. What we are currently seeing from Pioli has not (at least in my knowledge) been associated with him before. Whether we ever find out the truth is important because it will shape how Chiefs fans feel about Pioli and whether or not we can really adopt him into the system. It is my hope that the ugliness of it isn’t at true as it looks but if it is, Pioli will not last too long in KC.

So to never give Pioli a chance by himself is that much better?
Because somebody came out of the Patriots, you automatically assumed ‘cheater’ and he was already worthless in your eyes?
The fact of the matter is, either Pioli was going to come out of New England and continue the questionable ways, or he was going to break away from that and do things his own way. There is a big difference between watching somebody with a critical eye and being against him “from the beginning”.

perception is everything … what makes a magic show enjoyable isn’t believing that the magic tricks are real, we all know they aren’t, we know they’re illusions, trickery. It's easier to defend Pioli
As he wasn’t the guy in charge of getting Gaither on the field and solving part of our offense’s biggest weakness that isn’t a QB.
That said, it’s true that people shouldn’t crucify Haley while defending Pioli with the same arguments that could defend Haley.

He wasn't the guy in charge of getting GAither on the field..
Since Mr. Gaither never did anything but jump offsides for the Chiefs, I think you need to realize that this arguement holds no water. We don’t know that he was better than what was on the field any more than we know he was worse. You say that you don’t like it when people say that something must have legs because others continue to talk about it…do you normally define a position as one you don’t like that describes things that you do?

Jared Gaither is a better OT than Barry Richardson
And he didn’t see the field.
But sure, maybe he just was magically terrible in our practices then somehow miraculously recovered when he went to SD, so there’s not way Haley could’ve seen that we needed him on the field.

Todd Haley spent the last 16 years of his life in the NFL. IF his opinion was different, I would defer to his simply because it’s his job to make those evaluations. Game tape does not totally define a player.

question, very serious ...
suppose Gaither came in with an “attitude” and spent the majority of his time talking back to Haley about playing time or where he was going to play, or maybe came in with a lazy attitude or whatever …
let’s just pretend for a minute that he wasn’t all sunshine and roses, ok?
given that scenario, and if you were Haley … would YOU care what he wanted?
you’re fast to defend Pioli as a hardass boss … not so much for Haley? just curious on your stance on the above scenario …

I'm saying we had a player who is a better player
And he didn’t see the field. He then proceeded to go to another team and play better than the guy he didn’t replace here (although Gaither was by no means great, R-Rich is awful).
I’m saying that Pioli (at least in theory) listens to the coaches with regards to how guys like Gaither (a guy who they’d taken a flyer on with potential injury concerns) looks.
The release indicates that they thought he was hurt. His at least “OK” level of play a VERY short time later indicates he wasn’t.
That, in my eyes, is much more on the coaches than the GM.

How do you know
that Gaither wasn’t playing prima donna? Didn’t want to play on that side so he refused to pull the waggon from there? Could that be a plausible theory as to why Haley didn’t play him? Lots and lots of other reasons could have affected that decision MN. The universe has more than two choices. Lawyers really hate that.

But yeah, we’ll assume Gaither, who said he was fine playing RT, was lying. And that Muir was lying when he said the reason they cut Gaither was because he “lacked explosion”
Might as well.

I am the Master of Hyperenthetical Asiditry (you know, like this. Only more)
I'd be more apt to say...
Gaither was a HUGE “injury comeback” risk when he was added to the team.
He WAS a starting LT (a hard position to fill in the NFL) that was so questionable in his ability to return to form that the Ravens cut him loose.
He was looked at by several teams, including the Raiders… BEFORE the Chiefs added him to the squad. No one else took him due to medical evaluations of his back. For an O Lineman… back problems are HUGE. If you start every snap bent over with your hand on the ground, and have to quickly jerk up and absorb the force of a 300+ lb lineman into your shoulders (and down your spine to your legs) the health of your back is HUGE.
Further, I believe that when Muir said “Gaither lacked explosion” he was being nice, for the sake of Gaither finding another job. He was saying that, although healed, Gaither no longer seems to have the quickness or range of motion to lunge at the snap and absorb those kind of his down after down… He’s a future injury risk.. and a pretty big one.
San Diego was absolutely desperate of offensive linemen when the Chiefs released Gaither. It makes sense for them to take a flyer on him to finish out the season. For the Chiefs, it didn’t make sense to hold onto a play with that big of an injury risk.
That opnion would seem to take Muir’s comments AND Gaithers comments about playing RT into account, and assume NEITHER of them were lying.
I think people are making WAY WAY WAAAAAAAAAY to big of a deal about Gaither being released. Multiple back injuries for a LT.. that was cut for no compensation by another team… and that was looked at by several teams before the Chiefs… and couldn’t make a squad for medical reasons…. No big loss.
The Powers Of Astute Observation Are Often Mistaken As Cynicism By Those That Do Not Posses Them -- G.B. Shaw
The injury risk thing seems valid enough
It’s frustrating though, as I think we were as desperate as SD for a tackle (just of the “RT” persuasion) and the lack of a decent one contributed to our not making the playoffs.
But yeah, I get the logic there, and it’s possibly the logic that was used.

2) how is it that you mention former employees but don’t acknowledge claims of CURRENT employees?
3) if allegations ARE true, just what do you suggest be done about it, and by whom?
4) what problems are being caused to the Chiefs that you know of thus far, and what proof do you have for your allegations of said problems?

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Well, I'm glad that at least one fan
recognizes that what Babb reported happened BEFORE Haley was fired. I was and am a Haley fan, and there seems to be a whole lot more to this story than any of us will probably ever know. Romeo Crennel was even reportedly not happy in being asked to become interim HC because he supported Haley at the time. It would seem that Romeo only changed gears after Todd was fired or at least when Romeo was told it was going to happen either way. The accusations of Pioli heavy handedness are becoming more difficult to defend as time goes on. Is this all coming from the press being pissed at Pioli over their lack of access to the Chiefs? Hard to think that when Jack Smack was down on Haley for a lot longer than all the rest.

instead he made it a “federal case” by micromanaging and wasting the time of others within the organization … and by coming down in that heavy-handed manner he also did nothing to improve the confidence level of his employees

It depends a lot on how far up your ass your bosses foot is on that day. If you feel like you are not being treated fairly in your primary job, why would you take the time to pick up a candy wrapper that somebody else is responsible for that obviously isn’t doing their job when you believe you are doing everything you can to accomplish yours?

True enough
A lot of it depends on personality. I like being challenged and thrive best when perfection is expected of me.
Others may not handle a work environment that stresses perfection very well, and a good boss should at least partly compensate for that.
I guess what you’re talking about (not picking it up because it’s “someone else’s problem”) has never been part of why I work. I work for the company I work for, and whatever I can do that’s not immoral to help, I will. No matter who else “should have” been doing it. What I would like to know
is who is responsible for picking up that candy wrapper. Is it a member of a clean up crew that are employed by the chiefs, or is it contracted out to a private clean up company. Most companies are subbing out work like clean up to private contractors, and I can attest that when that happens and you see friends who were formally company employees layed off and private crews come in to replace them for less money, it chaps your ass in no uncertain terms. After these kinds of incidents you get a don’t give a damn about a company that has shown that they don’t give a damn about you.

A candy wrapper seems like just such a detail, know what I mean? And wouldn’t mentioning the candy bar explicitly ruin the point? That point being to see if people went out of their way to take care of details when not ordered to do so?
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
I am the Master of Hyperenthetical Asiditry (you know, like this. Only more)
I understand, but think about it ... who the hell thinks about a candry wrapper under the stairwell?
I mean, really …
unless it was specifically mentioned … it rather rightfully goes to the custodial staff not attending to that particular stairwell on a regular basis
again, what he ended up doing was bringing it up in a meeting of some higher ups as if it was THE single most important issue any of them could attend to in the future
one might reasonably expect that executives of an organization such as the Chiefs just MIGHT have other things to do than worry about candy wrappers or other minutiae on a regular basis
given all that, is it a wonder that employees are “walking on eggshells” on a daily basis? and if that is indeed the case (as reported by Babb from interviews) then doesn’t it seem like a less than desirable situation for those employees and the team itself?

The question is
did the people in that meeting come away thinking “Damn Straight! I’ve got to do my job better.” … or …“OMG, I work for an idiot!”
Maybe he should have put Ryan Simms in the stairwell?

I'm dressin my voodoo doll in stripes every season...
Where did you get your information that your version of HOW it was brought up in the meeting is the correct one?
By your own admission, it’s not the fact that he did it… as much as it is the HOW….
So IF Pioli walked into the meeting and casually said….
“We’ve been talking about attention to detail quite a lot over the last couple years. It’s everyones responcibility to pay attention to the little things, even if those things are specifically within your job perview. For instance, this candy wrapper has been blowing around in the stairwell for the last week. Everyone that uses those stairs had to have seen it, and yet no one picked it up. That’s a detail. It’s a very small thing, but the small things matter when your trying to build a winner. For instance, when selling season tickets to former ticket holders, the details matter…. don’t say….xxxxxxxxxxx… when you should be saying ………yyyyyyyyyy……………………”
The wrapper example could have been used as a springboard into discussing why the details matter on any number of topics that relate to someones job, and why the little things matter….
You don’t know how it was presented any more than I do. You just assume it was made into some huge deal by an overbearing boss, because you want to side with the “little guy”. You have a tendency to always side with the “little guy,” especially when the little guy has been working someplace for a long time. I imagine it has something to do with how your personal job experiences have influenced the color pallet of lifes painting. That doesn’t make you wrong, but it doesn’t make you right either.
Saying that it’s the HOW and not the WHY that matters most is akin to saying that the devil is in the details. You’ve created your own HOW…and thereby created your own devil.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
"wish I had the exact quote from the story, though"
During his first year, Pioli noticed a candy wrapper in a back stairwell and waited to see how long it took to be picked up. About a week passed, and it remained in the stairwell. He placed the wrapper in an envelope, and during a meeting of department heads, Donovan, then the team’s chief operating officer, brandished the wrapper as evidence of the attention to detail that Chiefs employees had grown to ignore.
"A great coaching moment," Donovan said.
Some thought the example was overblown. Pioli frequently came down hard on minutiae. Some emphases made sense, some staffers said; others, though, seemed over the top.

you're so good to me I could just cry ...

so it was Donovan “brandishing” the wrapper … and so now we know: some thought it made sense and some thought it was over the top
so, that’s why Pioli and Donovan get the big bucks … to hold up candy wrappers as examples “lack of attention to details”
and all this time I thought they were supposed to run a football team … silly me!

Donovan is supposed to run a football team?
No, he’s not. Pioli is supposed to run a football team? Yeah, he is supposed to make decisions on talent… but he’s a GM. You know, General Manager - and that includes oversight of the guy running the business side.
So, yeah, you’re being silly.
Somebody, somewhere, in the Chiefs organization was not doing their job if the wrapper wasn’t cleaned up in a week. Janitorial staff at the very least. And, yes, it’s a great coaching moment with regard to attention to detail.
It is time to anoint the Stanzi. He is The One.
therein lies my question ...
why didn’t Pioli send a memo or email to the custodial crew and be done with it?

This is my exact point. Employees knew to do it, and chose not to. Which was probably why he brought it up, as a representation of a detail going unnoticed or uncared for.
Student and employee are not the same thing. If I walked into a meeting at my old job and my boss (who had stressed detail in the past) did the same thing, I wouldn’t care at all other than to kick myself for having ignored picking up a wrapper

I DO run a business, and sometimes..
I actually PLACE a wadded up paper towel on the floor, or a black maker line on a bathroom tile wall, or an extra roll of dimes in the safe…. on purpose….
……just to see if people are paying attention to the details, and doing what needs to be done. In my experience… the people that pick it up, wipe it down, or report the overage make the better crew leaders/managers than the people that just step over the trash and pretend not to see it.
The details matter, and those willing to go the extra mile without being asked tend to be the people that give a crap about the company, and therfore… the people that I’m willing to reward.

I think I've come to wreck any post Ups has made. I think I'm sick ;)
But seriously, I’m sick of this secret style, 007 spy nonsense; it’s not necessary. If we build a good team through the draft and make smart savvy personnel decisions, none of this stuff matters. I believe that we are building this team after the wrong model. We should be more focused on the Steelers than the Pats. Nothing against the Pats but the Steelers have more hall of famers, championships, playoff appearances, playoff wins, division titles, etc. etc. over the past 40 years. They let their SB MVP go for a 5TH ROUNDER.
Just a thought.

Here's the thing about the Steelers
The Rooney’s are football fans, they’ve done what they need to do to win and Chuck Noll gave em the blueprints in ‘69 (WAY before my time). 7 rings in 9 tries. Clark doesn’t seem to be much of a football fan much like us die hards here. 1 ring since he’s been alive.
I think if he took 10% more interest in his team and shut this crap down and set Pioli back on the right track and get at least a Lamar Hunt trophy in here. The man’s name is on the trophy and he doesn’t have one; our most hated rival has 5.

whole different generation now ... from Lamar to Clark, same with the Rooneys of course
thing about Lamar is that he never seemed to let the fact that he was wealthy go to his head … genuinely nice guy, and a gentleman at that … he cared about the players at a personal level, and knew that the team (and the start-up league) was for fun, entertainment … just a different era altogether

Agreed
And when people say, “Well, the story hasn’t died, that proves something must be going on” I want to scream.
The story hasn’t died because others keep talking about it. I hate it when people use that as though it’s proof that unproven accusations are somehow more legit.
One thing that leads me to believe that much of this is pure speculation is the manner in which Babb wrote it. If he’d had stronger proof, I don’t think his language would have so carefully avoided clear statements of his own opinion (thus risking a libel lawsuit). As written, even if everything in it is completely false, he’s in the clear legally as far as I can tell. That makes me wonder if he did it intentionally.
However, it’s at least worth looking into. The wiretapping, that is. Totally a fire-worthy offense. The candy wrapper? Honestly, that’d tick me off too if I’d told my employees repeatedly that details and appearance matter.
But that wiretapping stuff needs to be looked into, ASAP.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Then how did it get there in the 1st place?
Anyone who has read any of my comments, knows that I am not a Pioli fan. If i’m not his biggest critic , I am definatly one of the biggest critic of his on here. It got to the point that even I got tired of bashing him. having said all that ,I will defend him till the end on this candy wrapper deal. In fact, I just might fire whoever did it, if I found out who. The fact that someone just threw there m and m wrapper on the ground , instead of putting it in there pocket and throwing it away, tells me that person is lazy, disrespectful, or even worse just plain doesn’t care. And if that person doesn’t care about that, what else doesn’t he care about? What other detail at his job(that affects this franchise) is he neglecting as well?
Worse yet, the fact that that wrapper was there for a week an NO ONE picked it up….that is kind of alarming. If people are to lazy to bend over to pick up a piece of trash, then frankly, they don’t deserve to be employed by a professional football team. Again… in what other areas are they being lazy in. I know it wasn’t there wrapper, but it is just common decency to pick up a piece of trash laying on the floor. These are grown professional people , who shouldn’t have to be told put garbage in the trash. A 6 year old knows better than that
Was what Pioli did petty?Perhaps. But, attention to detail is critical for any buisness being a success and I applaud him for what he did and it is very rare I do that
In nomeni parti et fili spiritus sancti
by saints_chiefsfan1979 on Jan 21, 2012 5:58 PM CST up reply actions
I have no idea how it got there ... I suppose Pioli failed to adequately address the issue of Stairwell Cams, so there's that
it’s possible that someone had it in their pocket and it simply fell out, it’s possible that someone tried stuffing it in their pocket and missed, maybe it fell out of a custodian’s dustpan when he was cleaning up and didn’t notice it … MAYBE Pioli put it there as a TEST (and wouldn’t that be an utterly BRILLIANT use of company time!)
Worse yet, the fact that that wrapper was there for a week an NO ONE picked it up
and that INCLUDES Pioli himself, who apprently is unable to simply lead by example and bend over, pick it up and throw it away … you know, integrity is what you do when nobody’s looking, just an idea here that he COULD have made it all fast and simple w/o turning it into a huge issue … I can’t imagine how being “petty” (and now possibly vindictive) can be a GOOD thing in terms of working environment for anyone … which was the main point of Babb’s original story
hmmmm, maybe Pioli is the one with a mental disorder, ya think? closes the blinds, the candy wrapper, the whole thing with people feeling frightened at work … sounds like he’s a Paranoid Schizophrenic with Delusions of Grandeur
to be expected of someone living in the shadows of The Great Belichick and Parcells for so many years … sooner or later he was bound to “crack”
and so it goes …
bottom line here is that you’ve made just as many assumptions about it all as anyone else has … that’s my entire point in ALL of this: you (and others) totally dismiss any notions of “truth” from Babb by claiming “assumptions are being made” while at the same time making assumptions of your own
oh, one last thing to consider: what if that candy wrapper was dropped by a PLAYER! or a COACH! should fire him IMMEDIATELY … is that your position? I mean really, what’s important here, a tiny bit of trash or the team? a piece of innocuous paper … or people? where, precisely, are the priorities?
other than that I agree with you wholeheartedly :-)

Now were talking about a JFK conspiracy here? Maybe it was a litterer on the grassy noll outside the complex. Maybe the litterer didn’t act alone. Maybe there were 2 litterers . Or maybe pioli put it there to see if anyone would pick it up( that is entirley possible) Bottom line, yes, I am making assumptions. But, i feel pretty confident that someone tossed that wrapper on the stairs. Pioli didn’t pick it up because A; he was trying to make a point and B; he shouldn’t have to pick it up,he is the boss.
if you saw someone at your work , just casually toss there garbage on the floor in front of you, would you respect that person? is that the enviorment you want to work in? An enviorment that people don’t even have enough respect to throw trash away.
Just the other day , I was at the store. I went to put the groceries in my car and noticed a shopping cart was parked in the space beside me up against a light pole. What was even more curious was there was a shopping cart bay right beside it. This person was so lazy, that they didn’t even bother to put it in it’s place 6 feet next to it. So I put it where it belonged. The problem with our society is that we think someone else will take care of a problem instead of us. That attitude seems to be at Arrowhead drive

Would I have made a big deal about it , probably not. You or i would have handled it differently. Truth be told, he should have went to Mark Donavan and said make sure people keep this place clean and left it at that. That is what managers do they manage. Shit rolls downhill as they say. If he would have done that, no one would be talking about it,instead it has become a walking punchline. So , I will fault him for his approach at the way he handled the situation , but I won’t fault the principle of his actions.
The problem with the way he handled it, is now people say he should have picked up the wrapper, but he didn’t(he eventually did). So, you can make a case that he became part of the problem and came out looking like a horses ass while trying to make a point. I will listen to that argument to an extent, but it still doesn’t excuse the fact that at a professional football team, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, has well educated people throwing trash on the floor and has people to lazy or to proud to pick it up. I think it is an embarrassment to the franchise. As I stated earlier, if they are that lazy that they can’t throw trash away, then what other aspects of there job are they slacking in?
I’m not trying to cast the employees at arrowhead in a bad light here. I’m sure that most of them are honest, hard working people. And maybe this is just an isolated incident. Or maybe it is symptamatic problem of a bigger issue, that I don’t know
Quick story here, when I was a kid I used to work at this car wash. I worked the afternoon shift and another kid worked the morning shift. It was 1 of our duties to fill the water softner tank. I never really did because I worked in the afternoon shift and that was something that you did 1st thing in the morning. Well 1 week it didn’t get filled and my boss let it go just to see if I would fill it. He then fired me at the end of the week because he said it was my responsibility to fill it. Bosses do this type of thing all the time to find out what employees are doing there job. it’s not uncommon

I've never faulted his principle, only how he handled it
and I know it’s not cool to going around trashing a place, but – as per the story – it was a single wrapper lying underneath a stairwell, and it’s also possible (if not downright likely) that one might have had to really LOOK to see it … Pioli noticed it, I understand that, he’s a detail guy, that makes sense
and I agree: it might be one overblown incident (let’s hope so!) … but again, in my own mind, he was the one who did the overblowing on it
and thanks for sharing … seems we’re maybe not all that far apart in the end

Ya, but that was years ago
Just saying that is how some employers weed out there work force. Or like you said see if you are doing your job when nobody is watching. I am with you on the way he handled it and a lot of this negative attention he has only himself to blame for. Go to the PR department or whoever, tell them about it and leave it at that. Bringing it in some plastic baggie at a staff meeting is pretty melodramatic if you ask me

and one last thing to consider ...
if they are that lazy that they can’t throw trash away, then what other aspects of there job are they slacking in?
as nobody knows the origin of said wrapper, it’s possible that it came from a visitor to the building, or maybe one of the employees had their kid for a day … imagine if Pioli was making this huge issue because some little kid dropped a wrapper in a stairwell, and it’s possible I suppose

LOL I don't think they allow visitors at Fort Knox err.....Arrowhead
Afterall, we can’t have outsiders stealing company secrets can we?
I think it was probably an employee that did it. Can’t prove it a 100%, but I think the likelyhood it came from anyone else is pretty remote.

CHIEFS WILL!

It's the same media cycle we see everywhere in society.
The media wants quick answers. They always have and always will. This is universal, whether talking about sports, politics, or crime. When a plan is put into place, they expect it to work the next day. When it doesn’t pay immediate dividends, they question the plan. When they are told to be patient, they question the planners. The planners then (predictably) decide that the media is a bad thing and shut them out. The media (also predictably) retaliates by stepping up their criticisms.
The thing to remember isn’t just that the Chiefs are a business, but that the KC Star is a business. That makes Kent Babb a businessman. One who’s business is covering the Chiefs. When the Chiefs don’t give him good information, then he must generate it in order to keep his business successful.
Is Pioli running a secretive organization? Absolutely. Does that put it on parallel with the CIA? Not at all. Could Pioli be more open with providing info to the public? Sure. Does he have to? No.
Pioli answers to Clark Hunt, not Kent Babb. And let’s face it, the best way for Pioli to stick it to Babb is to win a Super Bowl and prove that his way works. So, I’m personally hoping that Pioli comes out on top of this feud with Babb…because that will mean he brought a championship to Kansas City.
"You can't be fat and fast too; so lift, run, diet, and work." ~ Hank Stram
nice comment ... well thought out, Sir
I think it’s also important to keep in mind that it isn’t JUST the media wanting quick answers and immediacy … the media responds to the public in that, it’s not “the media” wanting everything right now now now, it’s US
that’s a societal issue, not a media thing per se … the media and our 24 Hour News Cycle is predicated on our short attention spans and what we as consumers demand

And probably will be if this season doesn’t turn out well (he was on the hot seat earlier this year).
As for “villainy”, I think you’re being very loose with that definition. This is the GM of a professional sports team, not the mayor of 1920’s Chicago.

I suppose "villainy" is a subjective term here
A GM who harasses his workers and institutes a policy off ear and dishonesty meets my definition. As does an owner who makes millions every year off his fans while intentionally putting out an inferior product, and claiming he has no other choice.

Nothing like taking someone's argument and twisting it

conversely, we should simply dismiss everything that's said or written or printed because we don't have "proof"
come on, counselor!
prosecution begs the courts forgiveness on this matter, but we were unable to obtain video evidence due to stonewalling tactics on the part of the defendant … IOW he didn’t immediately sign a full and complete confession that he did, in fact, murder his wife
all we have to offer is a neighbor who overheard the couple arguing vehemently, followed by the mysterious disappearance of his wife, along with her bank assets, and a trail of blood leading to the vehicle owned by the defendant
we regret not having a murder weapon, your honor

The point being
That we shouldn’t twist someone’s argument into something it’s not, like Lady (one of my favorite posters here) did.
As for what you said… you’re doing the exact same thing. At no point have I said I’m dismissing it. I’ve said I’m waiting to see what else emerges, and that there should be an immediate investigation on the wiretapping allegations.
How is that “dismissive?”

you said in your very first comment that you had a choice ... ie, believe it or not believe it
you really DID have it broken down into black and white … the “argument” against that (myself, LadyChief, Aiken) is that it isn’t so black and white … and that ALL the so-called arguments against that dismiss everything out of hand are based on the same " you’re making assumptions" mantra
that gets old and tired, and it goes both ways …

that as it stands is reasonable ... the way you originally stated it was "so my choice is .."
implying you have only only a “take it or leave it” choice … hell, even I don’t buy the wiretapping, but I can certainly believe there’s a “negative atmosphere” for some people to work in if some or many are constantly in fear of their jobs for tiny things

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
The first part of my statement was a commentary on your post, friend
Your post implied that there were only two sides to the issue.
One one hand we have some who think Pioli and the Chiefs are simply “taking care of business” and doing what any successful corporation would do, because after all, football is indeed a business and counts most is results.
You basically paint it out like one either has to agree with you side or say, "I believe the ends ALWAYS justify the means, a business is NOT as good as the people who work for it, and people should NOT be treated with dignity and respect and SHOULD work in an atmosphere of secrecey, fear of intimidation and reprisals.
Does that make sense? The reason I made the initial comment was to point out to you was that you’re basically saying in that section of your post, “There’s two sides here. One side says it’s ok to do bad things, and one side, like me, says it’s not.”
So the only choice I was talking about was the (loaded question) choice you were providing to the reader, rather than a fair and balanced statement on the “sides of the argument” a person could fall on.

I enjoy watching ups in this endeavor of his and usually it isn’t malicious. In this instance I think he is getting carried away with a subject that he lacks information on. Sadly enough, to many folks in this country want someone else to do their thinking and there is always someone there willing to do so.

Why are you begging the question?
All you have to do to indite Pioli is to watch the Chief’s games with an unbiased eye. It is all there for you to see. We still don’t have a NT after 3 years and it shows in our defence against the run. We still don’t have an off line that can pick up a yard on third down. We still have a problem scoring in the red zone. These things are all happening because we have a lot of positions where we don’t have quality players and in the positions where we do have quality players we don’t have anyone of quality to back them up in case of injury. That all falls on the GM who is responsible with stocking the team with quality players.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
I agree with you on the "short yardage" issue
I’ll wait and see if Pioli follows through on his statements that the line is a priority.
Frankly, when I see what was on the field I’m not sure what your problem is. You were predicting a 4 or 5 win season BEFORE we lost our two best players. We still pulled off 7 wins without them.
So… we lost our two best players and still won more games than you predicted. Doesn’t that tell you that perhaps your view of the current roster is perhaps slightly over-the-top pessimistic.
Now, if the new year begins and we’re sporting B-Rich on the line still… I may have to grab a torch and stand next to you on the soapbox.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
sure, if you want to count the Lions game, you have to count the Bears game.
You can’t pick and choose which games you think matter. They all count the same at the end of the season.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
For example, I could color a political debate like this...
“There’s those of us who believe in personal responsibility, in doing what needs to be done, and not making excuses. Then there are those who just want to syphon money off the most successful, have the government run the marketplace along with our lives, and create equal outcomes as opposed to equal opportunities by creating a playing field that favors the less talented/hardworking”
OR I could say
“On one hand we have those who believe the system is as fair as it can get, despite its flaws. On the other side we have those who believe the system is inherently unfair and needs to be balanced more so that those born into opportunity are favored less.”
Notice how with the first I make my side the “good” side and straw man the other side’s opinions? Whereas with the second I try to characterize the other side’s argument in a fair manner.
While this post was well written, the choice you offer much more resemebles my first statement than the second. Which was the point I was trying to get at (albeit passive-aggressively, sorry about that) in my original statement.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Just got done reading War Room
and a lot of things taking place are not so surprising after reading it. Pioli started from the absolute bottom in this league and has worked his way up to the top. His starting salary was about $16,000/yr. He worked his ass off to get there. He has no sympathy for people that take their job for granted in the NFL. He wants people that work just as hard as he did and do not feel entitled to work in the NFL.
How dare you imply Pioli's worked his butt off!!!!
Don’t you know he’s just another “fat cat corporate jerk” that we should all hate because he wields power!
I’d be willing to be Pioli worked in some crappy environments. I wonder if he complained about it to the media or shut up, grit his teeth, and powered through it?
Now the wiretapping thing would be going too far. But the rest? I"ve heard people say this kind of crap at every single job I’ve ever worked at. And generally, people were exaggerating because they were lousy workers and wanted someone to blame.

Turn up the volume
on that point, as elight said earlier, if you are doing your job well, you don’t have anything to worry about. If you are slacking and feel entitled because you’ve been with the organization for 80 years then you do need to worry. Do your job, work is not supposed to be fun, that’s why they PAY you to do it.
Don't worry people! The Chiefs and Royals have a plan - they are going to save all of the cap money until the year 2037, THEN we're going to have a team buddy.

his first league job was as Pro Personnel Assistant for the Browns, and then he was Pro Personnel Coordinator for the Ravens
Pioli started from the absolute bottom in this league and has worked his way up to the top
and he was already married to the daughter of Bill Parcells who had been a HC in the league 5 years before Pioli graduated from college … he didn’t start out as a janitor or waterboy, how do you get that he started “from the absolute bottom”

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Belichick let him sleep on a couch in the office when he started out.
and no, he was not married to Parcells daughter when he started working with Belichick and the Browns. Good try though.

you might be thinking of when he had first met Belichick when he (Pioli) was a student ... that wasn't a job by any means

wiki ... I know, totally unreliable source
In 1992, Pioli was hired as a pro personnel assistant by Bill Belichick, then the head coach of the Cleveland Browns. Pioli’s relationship with Belichick dated back to the mid-1980s, when as a student at Central Connecticut, Pioli would drive 90 minutes to the New York Giants training camp. Through a mutual friend, Pioli was introduced to then-Giants defensive coordinator Belichick, who was impressed at Pioli’s dedication to travel to each practice and offered him a place to stay
In Cleveland, Pioli was responsible for the evaluation of both college prospects and veteran free agents, as well as negotiating various player contracts. When the Browns moved to Baltimore after the 1995 season, Pioli stayed with the team and was promoted to Pro Personnel Coordinator for the Ravens’ 1996 season
from there to the Jets, then on to the Pats, then here

When Pioli officially took a job with the Browns in 92'
he made $16,000. That was a decrease in salary from what he was making at Murray State. He also was not married at the time.

There is no exact date from what I remember
But when he first started his “official” job with the Browns Belichick gave Pioli advice on married and family life and it stated that Pioli was “a long way from marriage at the time.”

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
I would suggest reading the book if you have the time and resources.
Every manager has his own style. Strict, laid back or somewhere in between. Nobody can accurately say that one style is better than another. It depends on the situation. You can either adapt your managing style to your employees or get employees that will do things your way. Pioli has obivously chosen that he is going to do things his way. Strict. To the point. No slacking off. After reading the book, Pioli has chosen his style by the way he was brought up. He was not satisfied by the way things were being done in KC. He wants scouting reports done a certain way, and if it is not to his liking than he will let the scouts know. This is a professional football team being run here. Everybody has to be on the same page. This isn’t Google or Apple where inovation is welcomed and encouraged. He wants things done consistently so people can effectively communicate within the organization. He views this as best for the organization.

I understand that, and it makes perfect sense ... style and form = best function, etc
that in itself is NOT an issue to me … nor is “running a tight ship” a big deal in my mind
only when the Captain of the ship is named Queeg is it going “overboard” (see what I did there?)

The only problem I would possibly have with the whole situation is the personal phone bugging.
And I am not going to argue at all on that point because nobody knows if it happend or not. If that was going on, he deserves to be fired. If that was not going on, than I have no problem with the rest of it.

Whats the big deal?
I doubt in the job desription it says they are supposed to be observing pracitce. It just goes back to the whole managing style. Pioli is to the point. You do your job, I do my job. Goal is winning. The type of people he wants wouldn’t be goign to the press about that. The type of people he wants wouldn’t care if they could see practice. He wants things done a certain way. That certain way doesn’t work well with everybody. I’m not defending his style. But he is in charge and he is going to run things his way while he is in charge.
