Powe classified as a "swing and a miss"
For the most part, the Chiefs are pretty comfortable with their defense when fully healthy, as they believe they have the right mix of young players and veterans, not to mention a lot of talent. However, they do have a major need for a nose tackle. Kelly Gregg manned the position in 2011, but as a free agent at age 35, he is likely to either retire or move on to a different team. We hear that finding his replacement will be a top priority this offseason, either through free agency or the draft. The only other nose tackle on the roster with any experience is Amon Gordon, who had two starts last season, and he is considered to be more of a role player than a starter. Jerrell Powe, a sixth-round draft pick in ’11, was called a "swing and a miss" by a team insider, as Powe never rounded into playing shape and was active for only one game.
Imagine what our defense will be like with a true NT. There are a lot of good ones in FA and the draft will have a couple 2-4 round prospects.

Not quite sure
how Powe can be classified as a miss already simply by not being in playing shape. He did decent in preseason.
Hold on there, scooter.................
(sounds of tires screeching to a halt)! I think it is a bit of a premature evaluation to say that Powe is a bust. So let’s don’t all go off half cocked with this over excited shot in the dark.
"The Hammer"
I'm guessing they knew all along that he was a project.
And that he wouldn’t contribute much in his rookie year, especially with the lockout.
but but but...
every pick of Pioli’s is suppose to be a home run, otherwise he’s an idiot that doesn’t know what he is doing,
agreed, just like Stanzi I think they knew both would be projects and probably wouldnt see the field much if at all last year, I’m willing to give him a couple years before I say he’s a bust
and even after a few years, if he doesn't pan out...
does anyone really call a 6th round pick a bust???
Football Then Hockey 7 days a week...
Seriously, "swing and a miss"?
More like “meh and a who cares.”
Oh I still care...
you only get so many picks a year and you want as many as possible to have some sort of a positive impact, but honestly I wont lose sleep over it like I may have with plenty other Chiefs news this past year, LoL
Football Then Hockey 7 days a week...
I care as well
and I think this whole thing sounds a little silly. If the coaching staff has already given up on Powe…he’s either REALLY bad (and was a fluke in preseason), or the coaching staff is way too impatient. I would guess they’re actually just working on developing him as they should, and hope for him to be better next year.

Doesn’t mean coach for sure…

One year
and its a swing and a miss… The guy wasn’t even active on game days most of the time. This upcoming offseason will tell us a lot about Powe and his work ethic, and shouldn’t be judged so prematurely.
Seeing that he didn't get on the field LAST year
I think that tells us plenty about Powe and his work ethic.
Idk,
It could be that he’s having a hard time adjusting to the pros or he isn’t understanding the defense as well as Gregg.
Now that he knows what to work on, his first off-season could show us his determination to work and learn, and maybe he will surprise us or he could not. I just don’t think we could judge a player so early, especially someone who we drafted due to potential and raw talent, not his technique or efficiency.
he was only active for one
and I don’t remember him playing
Predictions:
I'm going to stop predicting positive things
he played a bit
and looked pretty good. Physically he’s all there. He has to get the mental part of the game down
Powe played in one game
Nine snaps. Per PFF.

Or it tells us plenty about our defensive scheme
We’re in the base 3-4 on maybe 50% of our snaps. The rest of the time we were in (for the most part) a “2 down linemen” formation that consisted of Bailey and Gilberry with their hands on the ground and Houston/Hali standing and rushing.
So where does Powe come in? Dorsey, T-Jax, and Gregg are able to play the vast majority of base 3-4 snaps because they get subbed out anyways for our “pass rush” formations, and the few snaps they needed a breather we had Gordon, who could sub in for all three positions (something I’m guessing Powe cannot do).
So where does the PT come from for a rook like Powe? He’s not gonna unseat Gregg as our primary NT, and he can’t sub in at multiple positions like Gordon.
These issues could have had just as much to do with his lack of PT as “work ethic” issues, which we hadn’t heard about at all until a random, anonymous source from PFW. I’ll withhold judgment until I see what we do for NT this offseason. With Crennel at HC now he’ll have more sway with who we go after. If we ignore NT, or use only a “band-aid” for it again (ala Gregg or a similar player), that would be an indication that RAC thinks Powe is the long term answer.

This talk sounds Gaither-esque
would have loved to see him get some snaps in some of those blow outs, to at least get a better idea of what we have got. how someone looks on the practice field doesn’t necessarily translate to game time.
True
But I trust Romeo Crennel a hell of a lot more than I trust Bill Muir and Todd Haley. Once Haley was gone, Crennel could have played Powe or at least made him active. That tells me Romeo doesn’t think the kid is ready yet.
That being said, he’s a sixth round pick playing behind two veterans in Gregg and Gordon. He had no offseason because of the lockout. There was likely never any chance for him to progress enough this season that he would give the Chiefs a better chance to win than Gregg or Gordon.
That doesn’t mean that can’t change.

I agree with you on all of that
Especially the part about trusting RAC to play guys who are ready, rather than for “favoritism” reasons

can't argue with that
except all of romeo’s game were close and fairly meaningful. I was speaking more about buffalo, detroit, jets, patriots, miami. My take on preaseason was that he no doubt missed some tackles, but at least by my “eye” test he didn’t look out of place on the field and showed some flashes of things to come (?)
What does Gaither have to do with Haley and Muir?
Last I checked it’s Pioli that makes the cuts and if he knew Haley was on his way out anyway why would he let go of a good player because the coach he was going to can wanted him gone?

This kid needs a full offseason with OTAs and workouts before we discard him as a swing and miss.
Fitness level was one of the red flags against him before he was drafted but having no offseason last year didn’t put him in any position to overcome that. Considering his learning disability, learning a defense and a new position might’ve been all he could handle.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
Oh noes...
Another all bold thread.
FWIW, I hope we go after Soliai and still try to develop Powe into at least a role player. We got him late in the draft anyway. For him to turn into an every-down starter would be exceeding expectations.
Nicknames I have coined:
Jamaal Charles = 'Haley's Comet'
Shaun Smith = 'Big Nasty'
Kelly Gregg = 'Old Gregg'
Powe has bustaphobia.
Pioli leaked this himself to get Powe’s fat ass away from the buffet and into the gym.
I will say this name Gilbert Brown
Brown was active only 2 games his rookie season. But he went on to have a good career. Patience people
