Sixth-round pick Jason Kelce (Eagles) started all 16 games as a rookie at center and was very impressive, allowing just one sack. He ranked as the NFL’s second-best blocker on screen passes from the center position, according to Pro Football Focus.

In the book "War Room" by Michael Holley, Kelce was Pioli's man-crush. He would have drafted this kid in the 6th had the Eagles not beaten him to the punch. (Via Eagles.com)

As much as people laugh

Those two first round picks are Pro Bowlers and impact games a lot more then our first some of our first rounders.

If Haley wasn't so worried about a streak

we may have seen the same type of thing from our rookie C.

by Tarkus on Jan 19, 2012 1:30 PM CST reply actions

We also may have seen Ricky Stanzi for three games.

I’ve been pondering over the last few days “What if we had lost to Indy”. Something tells me the season would’ve been very different if we had. Maybe even playoff bound different.

Didn't Romeo move Becht up to second string the same time he moved Palko to last string?

We all tend to focus on the tackle Becht made on Battle, but he was probably our best blocking TE this year.

This

And that bump into battle wasnt even his fault. It was Liljas for getting his ass beat so bad pushing him and the defender into the backfield right into the area Becht was supposed to go.

Why?

It’s not like he’d have seen the field at center anyway.

Or drafted him instead of Gabe Miller.

Boom goes the dynamite.

Kelly Gregg = 'Old Gregg'

by Nick Britt on Jan 19, 2012 4:30 PM CST up reply actions

Too bad we didn't get him

The interior of the line likely would be set and OG wouldn’t nearly be as big of a need.

Going into next season it could’ve been: Albert-Hudson-Kelce-Asamoah-FA/draftee

Lilja would be the depth OG. Draft another late round OG for depth. Richardson as swing tackle.

by 7chiefs7 on Jan 19, 2012 1:41 PM CST reply actions

May as well had taken him in the 5th

if you’re going to reach for someone who was going to go undrafted (Gabe Miller), you may as well had just gone ahead and picked up a guy you wanted who was at least going to be drafted.

How do you jump to that conclusion?

With this

Fire Scott Pioli + hire Captain Hindsight = Superbowl.

by JayhawksNChiefs on Jan 19, 2012 1:58 PM CST up reply actions

I come to that conclusion

that Miller had a higher probability of going undrafted then Kelce….If he had a man crush on Kelce then he should have taken him instead of trying to look like the man by taking an unkown in Miller.

by AZDiamond75 on Jan 19, 2012 4:08 PM CST up reply actions

But how do you come to that conclusion

What would you, I or any joe on this site know about whether a guy is going to go undrafted or not. And please don’t quote some blowhard from TV on draft day who think they know either.

"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"

by GenericBrand on Jan 19, 2012 4:36 PM CST up reply actions

No one even heard of Gabe Miller before we drafted him

No Scouting reports on the guy, barely any tape on the guy, couldn’t find him on a big board, the guy was an enigma. His only claim to fame was playing next to Stephen Paea in college.

I think a little bit of the reason we drafted him was for Pioli’s ego, I think he wanted to be the guy that found a gem by figuring out that Paea wasn’t really that great and it was the guy next to him that was making him look good, so he made a poor decision and reached for Miller in the fifth.

by KC_Chiefs on Jan 19, 2012 8:17 PM CST up reply actions

THIS^^^

Why Miller was taken at all is beyond me when we had already drafted Houston and had Sheffield returning. With Studebaker and Hali, that’s a pretty good OLB corps, even with Sheffield coming back from injury and not knowing what we had in Houston yet.

If Pioli wanted him so bad and knew he was worth it, he should’ve taken him then or traded for another 6th. He likes to trade in the last 2 rounds – Jake O’Connell, anyone? Yeah, nice one, Scott.

by MattHoover on Jan 19, 2012 2:46 PM CST up reply actions

Pioli might have got wind of somebody else gunning for Miller, too.

I hated the pick at the time, too. I wanted Powe from about round two onward… But Miller might turn into something. I have this teeny tiny notion in the back of my head that he might eventually make a fine SILB.

I don't get why people think that it was a wasted pick

Or that he was going to go undrafted. The undrafted part is pure speculation that people got from Kiper or some other ESPN douche on draft day and until the kid sees the field in a meaningful game we have no clue what we have. I’m with you that he might be in line for SILB when everything is said and done.

"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"

by GenericBrand on Jan 19, 2012 3:20 PM CST up reply actions

I see what you are saying

People may be calling Kelce a wasted pick if we drafted him, because he wouldn’t have played anymore than Miller did.

But I think the reason people don’t like the Miller pick was that he didn’t do much in college and didn’t even make the team, which I think Kelce at least would have been able to do.

Jamaal Charles = 'Haley's Comet'
Shaun Smith = 'Big Nasty'

He didn't make the team?

He got injured. has nothing to do with making the team.

by GenericBrand on Jan 19, 2012 4:37 PM CST up reply actions

Don't be naive

It is pretty observable that we IR players with injuries, but not necessarily season-ending ones, because it allows us to keep more players under our control (i.e. increasing roster size beyond the cap). You obviously wouldn’t do it with a player that

Maybe this is why they close the blinds: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3408450

Even if you don’t subscribe to these “conspiracy” theories, who would Miller have logically supplanted on the active roster?

And even if they don't practice...

It is still my understanding that they can workout/“rehab” with the team, attend team meetings and film sessions, but not attend practice or games.

Jamaal Charles = 'Haley's Comet'
Shaun Smith = 'Big Nasty'

by Nick Britt on Jan 19, 2012 4:44 PM CST up reply actions

Completing my thought...

You obviously wouldn’t do this with a player that would help you win or was a starter, but it is perfect for guys that are development projects that are borderline in terms of making the roster.

It also allows for additional protection extending beyond that of a practice squad player, because other teams can’t snatch up your guy.

Miller would have played in place of Houston if he had busted.

Houston was a high risk. Higher risk than Hudson. Pioli was doubling down.

By the time we had to trim the roster to 53, it was pretty obvious Houston would be the starter

We also had Studebaker and Sheffield already on board.

Yep, it had shaken out by then. Thank goodness Houston's worked out so far.

It’s looking like for any true position of need, Pioli likes to get two players. Berry/Lewis, Houston/Miller. I’d be surprised if we didn’t do something like 1/2 plus 5/6 for either guard or tackle this year.

seems like Pioli always rolls the dice on a tremendous athlete in the mid-late rounds

Washington, Colin Brown, O’Connell, Miller

maybe he’s trying to prove how smart he is by drafting a guy that’s off of most people’s radar and making him great…

so far, that part isn’t working so well

by stagdsp on Jan 19, 2012 2:55 PM CST up reply actions

I know

The odds are so stacked against a pure workout warrior with nothing on the field to show for it. If the guy had any talent other than pure measurables, it would have had to come out at some point before the NFL.

Maybe they think their coaching is superior to anything these guys have had previously, and they think they can “coach up” the technique.

Pretty much what people are thinking about Burfict.

by Brsrkr on Jan 19, 2012 4:48 PM CST up reply actions

I think Burfict has been at least somewhat productive though

With him, the risk seems to be more mental.

If you have great workout numbers and a good motor, but just have poor technique — that can be used to justify your poor on-field performance. But the effort on the field at least leads you to be believe that the player is amenable to coaching.

If you have great workout numbers, but look lazy on tape and there are “off-the-field” concerns, it means you are probably going to be difficult to coach, so the same mistakes or lack of production you see on tape in college are probably going to be the same inadequacies you see in the NFL. That is where I see Burfict fitting in. To draft a guy like this, you have to think that maybe you have the right leadership in the locker room, or the right coaches to get a guy motivated. To me, this is even more a gamble.

Kelce?

I wouldnt be too upset about missing out on this guy. I live in Philly and the only time this guy has been mentioned is when he had to rip down the “fire andy reid” sign, hanging across the street from practice facility. I don’t think anyone thinks that highly of him. The Eagles oline stats are skewed bc Vick is always rolling out.

by Jamaarles25 on Jan 19, 2012 2:07 PM CST reply actions

And was always impressed with Kelce. The announcers were also quick to point out how much of an impact he has made early on.

In the book “War Room” by Michael Holley, Kelce was Pioli’s man-crush. He would have drafted this kid in the 6th had the Eagles not beaten him to the punch. (Via Eagles.com)

And this is the basic dilema at the core of the draft, that some team, any team, can snatch the prize from under your feet. No different than in high school gym class when you choose up sides, you pick the very best player for whatever’s needed, in other words load up with the studs.

by BCRavenJHawkfan on Jan 19, 2012 2:10 PM CST reply actions

Could be...

Pioli wanted Pouncey in the 1st if he would have fell to him. At least that is what the book says, who knows if that is reality.

by Crown Chief on Jan 19, 2012 2:25 PM CST up reply actions

What makes you think that?

Just because he wanted Kelce in the 6th round doesn’t mean that. It just means he thought he would be too great of a value there. You can never have too many good OL. I don’t think there’s any question that Hudson was drafted with the idea of replacing Wiegs. They weren’t even sure if Wiegs was returning.

by Tarkus on Jan 19, 2012 2:29 PM CST up reply actions

agreed

from day ONE Poili said Hudson will be the Chiefs’ Center

by stagdsp on Jan 19, 2012 2:32 PM CST up reply actions

Looks like a typical Pioli double down.

Instead of getting a redundant center, we got a redundant LB in Miller….

I can see this Kelce kid needing some development time, probably more than Hudson. Just his build, looks like he’d need to gain a few to hold up against the big NTs.
