Big Question

Who surrounds Charles in the backfield next season?

Offseason Roster Review: Running Backs | KCChiefs.com

Josh Looney's offseason roster review series is pretty good. I'm sure we'll have a few comments for his "Big Question" about the future of the running backs (originally linked in Arrowheadlines).

Best case scenario

McClain back at FB. Sign Ryan Grant. Draft a mid-late round RB like Vic Ballard.

Ryan Grant seems like he's on the steady downhill

injury issues have marred his last season or two… he doesn’t have killer speed anyway. Is he worth being a change-of-pace guy to JC?

I liked Grant a lot with GB about 3 years ago… at this point he doesn’t seem like a huge upgrade over Thomas Jones sadly.

by Ochophosphate on Jan 19, 2012 12:49 PM CST up reply actions

Three years ago he was a starter. Now he's a guy that would probably excel taking 200 carries/year/

He’s had a chance to get healthy now and has only touched the ball about 150 times over the last two years. He still has the burst to be a good compliment though and is a guy, like Thomas Jones(the first year anyway), that we don’t need a different set of plays for which helps the offense. He doesn’t have killer speed but he’s got good burst and he’s still a physical player.

Nice take

and he has good hands if I recall – if he’s wicked good at blocking then maybe he is a good fit.

I would prefer someone like Green-Ellis (mentioned below) if I had the choice though.

by Ochophosphate on Jan 19, 2012 12:57 PM CST up reply actions

I like Green Ellis too

And considering the Patriots dont seem to value their RBs I could see them letting him walk.

You too?

he was one of my last picks this year, 13th round maybe… I’ll always take a gamble on someone like that in the late rounds, wasn’t sure if he’d carry a full load this year or not. I had him a few years back and he was a beast, so I probably had that in the back of my mind as well.

Pretty sure I had dropped him by week 2 or 3 though.

by Ochophosphate on Jan 19, 2012 1:00 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

Got him in a late late round… thought it was a good pick up. Nope. Also got him early on the year he busted up his leg. I’m done w/ him.

If we don’t upgrade our O-line…my answer would be the opposing Defense.

My earliest Chiefs memories are watching guys named Dawson, Podolak, Taylor, Thomas, Bell, and Buchanan. So, yeah...I'm kind of an old fart.

I was amazed when I heard about his fumbles

that the one he lost not long ago was actually the first one he lost in his career. That’s pretty damn impressive.

I’d love to have the Law Firm backing up JC.

but seriously he would be one helluva follow up to JC on the field.

by Ochophosphate on Jan 19, 2012 12:58 PM CST up reply actions

I think we would have a better chance at Tolbert

since Bush proved he can carry the load. I wouldn’t be surprised if Oakland tried to re-sign him and unload McFadden since he can’t stay healthy

Tolbert= Thiggys college homey

Like Tolberts “run your ass over” attitude. Plus he catches the ball surpirsingly well

by ArrowDread on Jan 19, 2012 1:07 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

but SD will keep him. You know as well as I do that SD is the only true home for the elusive fatback. From Marion Butts to Natrone Means to Mike Tolbert. If you’re a fatback not name Jerome Bettis, SD is your home.

Otherwise Green Ellis, Bush and even Tolbert would be interresting.

I say “even” Tolbert because he is not interchangeable with Charles, he is probably an inside only guy.

Battle v2011 > TJ v2010.

But he still should be regarded as a backup.

by Tarkus on Jan 19, 2012 1:25 PM CST up reply actions

Not even a backup

Jackie Battle has done little to nothing as a Chief and will turn 29 at some for next season. RBs are not wine, they rarely get better with age. For all the talk about Battle being great on special teams, he has totaled 15 tackles over his 5 year career and doesn’t return kicks. I would rather drop Battle and keep the roster space to carry another TE, WR, or CB (preferably a TE).

by Chiefs4Life on Jan 19, 2012 1:31 PM CST up reply actions

Battle barely has any tread on the tires

and he can play FB too

Yep.

Good point about also being able to play FB.

by Tarkus on Jan 19, 2012 1:36 PM CST up reply actions

Stilll

we could use his roster spot on someone with any kind of upside.

by Crown Chief on Jan 19, 2012 3:26 PM CST up reply actions

4.0 YPC from a backup forced to start is pretty good.

Especially when your passing game sucks most of the year.

by Tarkus on Jan 19, 2012 1:35 PM CST up reply actions

He'll be on the street if we need him

I don’t see a lot of teams lining up for Battle’s services. If we get desperate for a RB next season, we should be able to sign him off the street. McClain and Bush (who I want as a FA) can both play RB/FB at a higher level than Battle and we will have Bannon on the practice squad if we need a backup. Battle is eating a roster spot that could go to someone who offers more to the team.

by Chiefs4Life on Jan 19, 2012 1:40 PM CST up reply actions

I doubt that.

But you’ve made your point. You don’t like him.

by Tarkus on Jan 19, 2012 2:01 PM CST up reply actions

Not to belabor the point

It’s not that I don’t like him (after all, I don’t know him). I just haven’t seen anything from him that makes me think he offers much to the team.

by Chiefs4Life on Jan 19, 2012 2:09 PM CST up reply actions

Options

Bush, Snelling, or Tolbert top the list of FAs that might not get re-signed or tagged. From the draft, I don’t see us using higher than a 5th round pick and targeting Ballard from Miss. State. or bolden from Mississippi.

by Chiefs4Life on Jan 19, 2012 1:20 PM CST reply actions

Bush or Tolbert would be the best signings

Since they’re good AND we’d be taking them away from division opponents. Of the two, I’d rather have MIchael Bush.

by Wait and See on Jan 19, 2012 1:21 PM CST reply actions

I like Bernard Pierce..

6-0..218lbs of out Temple.. roughly 3rd Rd Pick. rushed for 1481 yards this year. Power with nimble…

by cyberry on Jan 19, 2012 1:52 PM CST reply actions

But if Orson Charles is still there...

I would take Charles in 3rd..and go after Vic Ballard ..Miss State in the 4th..In all fairness Charles is only 6-2..(not 6-3..so I’ve read)..so he might drop..

by cyberry on Jan 19, 2012 2:23 PM CST up reply actions

He might be

If so, I’d consider Chris Polk (RB – Washington), Nick Toon (WR – Wisoncsin) or even Weeden (QB – Ok. State) ahead of Pierce (although I wouldn’t be upset if Pioli thought Pierce was better than the above players.

by Chiefs4Life on Jan 19, 2012 2:27 PM CST up reply actions

Would not take Richardson

Not cuz he isn’t a beast, but most RBs decline after 3 or 4 years. JC and Bush would be a deadly combo…then draft another RB. I have a feeling we will be drafting a RB, TE, and QB every year.

by AZDiamond75 on Jan 19, 2012 1:57 PM CST reply actions

I wouldn't worry about a quick decline

considering that he’d be sharing carries. I wouldn’t be upset with the Richardson pick, but I’d rather take a trade down & have an extra pick in the 2nd or 3rd. The problem with taking a RB that early is that you’d be marginalizing McCluster’s role.

by jmcgoblue on Jan 19, 2012 2:08 PM CST up reply actions

Trent doesn't have a lot of tread on his tires coming out of college

Only one year starting, timeshare with Ingram before as a backup, then in the Nfl would share with JC I think that could have him last longer then the norm for running backs.

Much rather trade back and draft him and only if Decastro isnt there.

by AZDiamond75 on Jan 19, 2012 4:25 PM CST up reply actions

Trent Richardson.

Jamaal Charles is a 195 pound running back coming off a major knee injury who has never carried in ball more than 230 times in a season as a pro. If Trent Richardson falls to them he would be the best player available. Thomas Jones is at the end of his career and Jamaal Charles is coming off a serious injury. Running backs slide in the draft, but Richardson is a special talent and too good for Kansas City to pass on. In 2011, Richardson had 24 total touchdowns (21 rushing, three receiving). He also ran for 1,679 yards, averaging 5.9 yards per carry. Richardson caught 29 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns as well.

by OJ In Nevada on Jan 19, 2012 2:08 PM CST reply actions

Trent Richardson is a good back comings out of college

But can our offensive line block for him, remember JC found holes when there were none even before he got injuried with our line and jones not doing much of nothing, teams were loading the box and there was negative yardage, and Richardson is a different kind of back , north, south if the line does not open holes he will just be a good back with about 3yd per carry avg waiting for that one time he could break one, and we are back to the question of QB.
With Brees,Brady,Eli,Cam,and all the other elite QB,s who can put up 35 to 40 point a game.
I agree with the people that say the game is changing pass first , run second, It all starts with our two lines, opening holes, offense and stopping the run and a good pass rush for our defense

by antony555 on Jan 19, 2012 11:32 PM CST up reply actions

Lot of good running backs this year.

Fit what we do, I really like Doug Martin from Boise State and wouldn’t mind him in the 3rd or 4th.

If we draft Richardson that would be awesome but after giving Charles a big contract I dont know of we’d be so quick to pay for another one.

Me and Matt Cassel just - you up, dog!

by ChiefWarPaint on Jan 19, 2012 2:21 PM CST reply actions

Is this really a need?

Jamaal will get the lions share, DexMex and (hopefully) LeRon will get a handfull, there really isn’t a need to spend even a midround draft pick on one.

by craig in calgary on Jan 19, 2012 2:27 PM CST reply actions

One or all of them may not make it through 16 games

but they have a better shot at it if they have someone else carrying some of the load.

I’ll bet Pioli pulls the trigger on a back in the 3rd round or later.

I was once fired from a job two days after I waited on Matt Cassel and his wife Lauren Killian. Totally my AP moment to remember. Unfortunately also one of my stupidest moments.

by Chiefs_swagger on Jan 19, 2012 2:37 PM CST up reply actions

He did mess his knee up, that tends to effect running backs like JC.

Dam when are we going to get a coach, Iny just fired their coach and who knows?

How many more, teams will need a championship caliber OC?, we certainly do
Who is able to call plays and get the ball down the field in chunks at a time so these high powered offenses we play don’t just blow us out in the first quarter like 28 to 0 or maybe 35 to 3, all by air, even Smith for the niners was a first round pick it may have taken him a while and the right coach, where are they now one game from the Super bowl first year with the new coach, and the last time we played the niners was year before last and Vernon Davis was talking trash and we blew them out and he was crying not because of joy,but because he got his butt handed to him and his team!, just one year later look at them now got that Simple minded coach out Mr. Chicago bear and look at them now.
This should be the Chiefs, What is POPO waiting on the NFL is only so big, is he going to Canada are something, we talk of the Players but what are they going to do, coach themselves, all the BS about the non-football side of the Chiefs nothing is coming to us from the front office, is he trying to cover his ass or something, Dam if they don’t like working for the Chiefs organization than quit and get another job so this so called GM can get back to work!!!!!!!!
