Rounding Up The Kansas City Chiefs Free Agents

Photo

It was free agency day around here yesterday as we went through all of the Kansas City Chiefs 22 free-agents-to-be and determined who the Chiefs must keep, who they should keep if it makes sense and who shouldn't be a priority.

Here's the list I came up with (click on the link for the analysis):

Must keep: LB Jovan Belcher (RFA), CB Brandon Carr and WR Dwayne Bowe

Keep if it makes sense: S Reshard Langford (ERFA), QB Kyle Orton, RB Jackie Battle, FB Le'Ron McClain, TE Leonard Pope, DE Wallace Gilberry, DL Amon Gordon, DT Kelly Gregg, CB Travis Daniels and S Jon McGraw.

Not a priority: QB Tyler Palko (ERFA), TE Jake O'Connell (RFA), RB Thomas Jones, WR Jerheme Urban, TE Anthony Becht, OT Ryan O'Callaghan, OT Barry Richardson, C Casey Wiegmann and S Sabby Piscitelli.

I think most of the disagreement I've seen comes from folks switching up the must keep and keep if it makes sense groups. Others thought O'Callaghan or Richardson should be on the keep if it makes sense list.

So out of the 22 free agents, how many do you think will be back next year? Remember there will be surprise cuts, guys signed in free agency and of course the draft.

And the surprise keep will be…………………..

Sabby Piscitelli. I will not be surprised if he sticks around another year.

I see no reason why Barry Richardson shouldn't be brought back

He’d be a great swing tackle until Mims and/or Maneri develop. That doesn’t mean an alternative couldn’t be found.

by Dagda on Jan 19, 2012 8:30 AM CST reply actions

I don't see Maneri developing into a starter

but, I kinda like him as the extra TE/OT for short yardage

We have different definitions of the term "great swing tackle"

A former starter with good experience at both LOT and ROT?

Richardson can get you through a stretch of games at both positions. You can’t have 1st round draft choices backing up every position. Let’s be real, here, please.

by Dagda on Jan 19, 2012 12:55 PM CST up reply actions

true

Richardson is a beast at runblocking. Solid third tackle option for short yardage. Remember when we went 10-6? Nobody complained about him then.

Lots of people were complaining about him then

People were constantly complaining about him. Hell, offensive tackle was one of the most popular choices for the Chiefs in mock drafts last year.

And here’s a hint, nobody wanted to take a tackle in order to bench Branden Albert.

I'll green that

but I won’t put Orton in the “most important signing” of the off-season. I think KC needs him to make the QB competition much more competitive, and I think Orton would win it, obviously.

But I really want to see Carr signed; that kind of CB tandem is so rare. Plus, we must keep Bowe. He’s a beast and can, hopefully, get past the critical drops.

I'll take the over

9 (hopefully 10): Belcher, Carr, Bowe, Battle, McClain, Gilberry, Gordon, McGraw, Richardson, and (here’s the hopefully) Orton.

Belcher was decent this year. Unless we draft an ILB in the high rights, I see a solid Belcher v Siler training camp battle for the starting role.

Battle was serviceable. I’m hoping he’s third on the depth chart behand an FA or draftee. I also think they value his ST play.

Gilberry, Gordon, McGraw, and Richardson are depth players.

by 7chiefs7 on Jan 19, 2012 8:40 AM CST up reply actions

I agree with most of yours.

I’d like us to keep Len Pope. He’s a good blocker and can occasionally shock everyone by catching a pass. But, like Battle, he should be 3rd on the depth chart behind a FA or draftee.

If we don’t trade Dorsey, Gilberry is probably expendable. Especially if they draft another DE, which, based on what we’ve seen from Pioli, they probably will.

Also, we should only keep Richardson as a swing tackle, and we get a FA or a mid-high rd draft pick to take over at RT.

The Eagles are already stacked with recievers who didn't quit on them last year. Plus Maclin's definitely a legit #1.

If I were them, I’d only tag him if I thought I could get a good trade for him.

by Falcon58 on Jan 19, 2012 8:59 AM CST reply actions

What are the cap numbers like?

Just curious. If we do have plenty of space, then I don’t see why keeping both Carr and Bowe would be so out of the question.

Bowe will be wanting (and should get) top dollar.

Carr is a different issue. I don’t think he’ll ask for more than Flowers ($50.6/6yrs, $20 guaranteed). I think he knows Flowers is better and deserves more money. If I’m right about that, then I don’t think it’s out of the question to keep them both.

by 7chiefs7 on Jan 19, 2012 9:05 AM CST up reply actions

Bowe and Carr co-existing?

It’s not about whether we have cap space or not. It’s about whether or not we franchise one or the other. If we franchise Bowe, I think we keep Carr. If we franchise Carr, I’m not sure if Bowe would be willing to stay put and settle for a long term contract in KC or test FA elsewhere to see if he could land a larger contract with a better team. That said, I believe if he tests FA the Chiefs have the ability to match other contracts but I think the Chiefs would let him go in this situation.

Carr knows he has a good thing going on defense with a healthy Brandon Flowers and Eric Berry in the backfield with Kendrick Lewis providing additional depth at the Safety position. I see him staying one way or the other.

by JMagsKC1 on Jan 19, 2012 9:21 AM CST up reply actions

This is sort of what I'm saying

Carr probably (or at least probably should) like the situation here for the reasons you just said. I don’t think he’ll ask for more money than Flowers, so I don’t think the franchise tag needs to be used on Carr.

If that’s the case, then the tag can be used on Bowe. This way we keep them both.

by 7chiefs7 on Jan 19, 2012 9:30 AM CST up reply actions

Exactly

And the tag costs roughly the same to use on either Bowe or Carr, but the tag would give Carr more money in one season than he would likely receive via a long term contract. Therefore, makes more sense to use the franchise tag on Bowe if the plan is to sign him big money to a long term contract anyway next season.

by JMagsKC1 on Jan 19, 2012 9:59 AM CST up reply actions

The only way we keep them both for 2012 is if one is signed and the other is franchised.

But even then, that’s not a guarantee. It’s an issue of money, but not the way you think. It’s an issue of how much money could Carr demand on the free agent market. You say “Carr won’t ask for a bunch of money.” I say, “Bullshit”. He’s a football player looking for financial security for himself and his family (he said as much on the radio last week). If he makes it to FA and can test the market, someone will probably through some money at him (Detroit?) and it will be more than the Chiefs are willing to spend. I think the problem here with Carr is that we had the opportunity to get a deal done much cheaper than it will now be. Carr would rather test free agency right now than commit to a contract. And I don’t blame him. If Pioli wanted to lock this guy up, he should have done it early this year. Now he’ll pay for it, one way or another.

Now, is he worth #1 CB money? Not to us, but probably to somebody. Remember, his stats aren’t that much different than Flowers’ stats. They really aren’t. Right now, he’s the best #2 CB in football (IMHO) and he’s going to get paid by someone to be a #1.

So Pioli should focus on Bowe if he really wants to sign one of these guys and then franchise Carr and listen to trade offers if they get made. Either of these guys would be worth a tag-and-trade deal. Especially if it’s two for one. This is actually a great position for the Chiefs to be in. They’ve got talent other teams might want, which allows them to stockpile picks and get more and more talent in the draft. Plus they have the cap space to sign a few key free agents. Of course a tag-and-trade is only acceptable this year if we get it done before the Draft.

The monkey wrench in all of this could be that he doesn’t want Bowe and wants to try for one of the FA WRs to replace Bowe with a Colston or one of the Jackson’s. Then he might very well go for a long term deal with Carr and make sure this defense maintains solidity. Either way, I foresee one of these players not being in a Chiefs uni next year. Personally, I’d rather have Carr than Bowe.

2012 Chiefs Draft Picks by Falcon58: G DeCastro 1st round, NT Ta'amu 2nd round or OT Adcock 2nd/3rd round, TE Egnew 3rd round, RB Ganaway 5th/6th, QB Case Keenum 5th/6th. Resign: Carr, Bowe, Orton, McClain, Gordon(in that order). Trade Dorsey for picks, promote Gordon to DT/DE.

But what if he knows what some of us suspect?

That Carr is actually better than Flowers? 6’0" 200 lb. corners that can play like that are pretty darn rare.

He tests FA and gets #1 money offers, it’s time to franchise him. Better yet, offer him top money right the frank now.

TE Position

Though not likely to happen, if Joel Dreessen (TE HOU) was able to test FA waters and didn’t immediately re-sign with the Texans, I wouldn’t mind having him join the Chiefs squad. He doesn’t have the same size as Pope but he’s still a big TE with more upside in terms of talent compared to someone like Pope and is still large enough to create mismatches against opposing defenses. We’d look better at the TE position with Moeaki, Dreessen and Pope than we do now with Moeaki, Pope, O’Connel and Becht (the latter two wouldn’t make sense if we grabbed a guy like Dreessen imo).

Though rumors coming out of Houston make it sound like he’ll most likely re-sign with the Texans. Just making a point that TE would be a nice position to see an upgrade.

+1 back at you on the wife comment!

Yeah, Dreessen from what I’ve seen is underrated and not as transparent across the league playing on the other side of Owen Daniels. But when utilized in the right way he’s shown that his upside is greater than the picture his career stats show. I think someone like him as Moeaki’s counterpart would bring an additional component as a threat to opposing defenses.

they won’t make it to training camp on time…or at all…

Clark Hunt & Pioli, get some KING KONG BALLS and move up to draft a QB in the 1st RD of the 2012 NFL Draft: RG3 or Luck.

Free agents

Here are some free agents I would like the Chiefs to look at for increased competition and depth at QB, running back, wide receiver, and tight end from that list.

QB- Vince Young (guy would be exciting), Jason Campbell, Shaun Hill, and Brady Quinn

HB (thunder added to lighting)- Ryan Grant, Earnest Graham, Mike Tolbert

Tight End- Fred Davis, Martellius Bennett, John Carlson, John Dreesen

Wide Out- Laurent Robinson, Mario Manningham, Steve Smith (Eagles), Robert Meachem

-1 on Vince Young = locker room cancer...let someone else try to re-develop his attitude and career

QB – I would be fine with Jason Campbell to compete with Matt Cassel though he would likely be more expensive than Orton and I’m not all that high on him either, but probably an upgrade. Shaun Hill or Brady Quinn (Crennel’s guy) would be solid backups…at least Hill has shown he is capable of handling the starting role when needed.

RB – If Ryan Grant can be acquired cheaply then I agree. Otherwise, I would take Mike Tolbert over the other two.

TE – Fred Davis would be an awesome acquisition if Washington lets him go, though he’s a restricted FA so it will be interesting to see how that works out. Martellus Bennett will definitely test FA waters; he’s got the size and speed but inconsistent at best – maybe what he needs is another team, or maybe it is what it is. I’d be happier signing Dreessen over the others (see my posts below).

WR – Laurent Robinson or Mario Manningham if Dwayne Bowe leaves. Would be cool to keep Bowe and have a guy like Robinson at Flanker or Slot in rotation with Jon Baldwin and Steve Breaston (or would you need Breaston? Doesn’t matter, won’t happen).

Breaston

I like him but the free agent class of wide outs this year is so much better than last year. It makes you wish they didn’t get Steve. At the same time if Bowe leaves it’s a good list of possible replacements.

Breaston is money

and has the surest hands in the league. The LEAGUE.

It is time to anoint the Stanzi. He is The One.

I see as many as 8-11 of the 22 listed returning in 2012.

We may see a draft class of 7 or 8 making roster. We may see an UDFA making roster. We may see 3-5 FA signees. that addition of 11 to 14 new faces means 11 to 14 will be gone from the 22. That allows for 8-11 to stay as a starter, package contributor or as depth.

Like to see return as starter, contributor or depth:
Belcher, Carr, Bowe, Orton, McClain, Gordon, O’Callahan, Battle , Daniels, Becht, Urban.

Need to upgrade positions:
DE in base 3-4, NT in base 3-4, ILB, QB, Speed and depth at SS, FS, CB, RB Compliment, TE, OT, OG/C depth.

The key to success will be to not just replace these positions but to actually upgrade the production from these positions as well as special teams. (A blocked field goal may have kept us out of playoffs.)

Becht is pretty good at tackling our RB

Two guys I don't care to see back are Pope and O'Connell.

We should see at least one aquisition at TE thru Draft or FA. By default Bect most likely stays.

That's not fair. He did pretty well with the chili on the hot dog.

2012 Chiefs Draft Picks by Falcon58: G DeCastro 1st round, NT Ta'amu 2nd round or OT Adcock 2nd/3rd round, TE Egnew 3rd round, RB Ganaway 5th/6th, QB Case Keenum 5th/6th. Resign: Carr, Bowe, Orton, McClain, Gordon(in that order). Trade Dorsey for picks, promote Gordon to DT/DE.

Found this today

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1013164-nfl-free-agency-rumors-possible-moves-for-the-50-free-agents-in-2012/

don’t know how insightful this guy is, but he says Chiefs sign Carr and lose Bowe. He also says Chiefs sign Jermichael Finley. I am too lazy to see if this guy is truly insightful, but I am assuming he gets paid for this stuff and I just waste my lunchtime.

If you found it on Bleacher Report chances are it’s all crap.

"Hater" is a term used by weak-minded people in the face of legitimate criticism.

I like

McGraw
Gilberry
Richardson (back up T, starting G)

by Brad-KC on Jan 19, 2012 11:15 AM CST reply actions

Please move McGraw to not priority

Or sign him as asst. def backs coach. It’ll be cheaper & not affect salary cap
