I'm waiting to hear what James Hetfield has to say about it
If you ask me, nothing is more hard core than trying to shut down online downloads
Standing on the corner in a white Godfather hat. He drives a long black gangster Cadillac. He can steal a broads mind, man, in three or four minutes. It’s not how long you talk, brother, it’s what you put in it.
That means the rest of the world should be against it.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
I'm about to go crazier than a shithouse rat because reddit is down today
Can’t imagine what it would be like if reddit, arrowheadpride, and pretty much every other website I got to was effectively shutdown permanently.
This legislation is the epitome of chasing a fly with a bazooka. Congress is risking to destroy the Internet in a vain effort to prevent piracy. It makes no logical sense, even the supposed benefactors of this legislation will almost certainly lose in the long term.

Actually the Whitehouse is against it too.

Just because I haven't responded, doesn't mean you won the argument!
THIS
and the legislation came from a tea party Republican – Lamar Smith (R-TX).

The House legislation, not the Senate’s version. That came from Leahy, hardly a conservative. Both bills have (or had, at this point) bipartisan support so it’s not really a D/R issue.

Just like they were with NDAA
Then when Obama signs SOPA he can just say he won’t do anything bad he promises.

You're right, never seen a Republican do that
Love people that blame one side or the other, gives the argument legitimacy.
You were right with the title alone, didn’t need to add the rest.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
Are being sarcastic with "never seen a republican do that"?
As previously mentioned a republican introduced the bill and the Obama administration has voiced opposition to both bills (PIPA and SOPA). Though the bills do have a fair amount of support on both sides of the aisle.

To be fair.
The Obama administration only came out against the bills as they’re currently worded, and even then, only after it became so unpopular to support them. This is the same administration who were supposedly against the NDAA bill, which Obama went on to sign. Eff the lot of them!
Of course both sides have support
the RIAA and MPAA I’m sure are paying good money for that support.
Not trying to be stupid or anything,
but can someone very vaugely explain this to me? I guess I’m lost.

I believe PIPA (Protect IP Act) and SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) are the congress's attempts at stopping internet piracy...
however it could possibly stifle economic growth and limit online liberty. Bad stuff.

The federales want to stop online piracy by holding companies like youtube, google, etc responsible for piracy posted through their hosting
the problem is that something like youtube get 24 hours worth of posts every second. Screening all posting to ensure no illegally pirated material is onerous and would wreck their business model. They do pull any copyrighted material upon being informed by the copyright holder, so they do their part. But they can’t screen every video posted as it would be unenforceable and ultimately sink them.
Tebow might know Jesus, but Bill Muir is old enough to have actually babysat him in the manger.
Wikipedia is blacked out today too.
Personally, I think some of the search engines should have joined the blackout.
2012 Chiefs Draft Picks by Falcon58: G DeCastro 1st round, NT Ta'amu 2nd round or OT Adcock 2nd/3rd round, TE Egnew 3rd round, RB Ganaway 5th/6th, QB Case Keenum 5th/6th. Resign: Carr, Bowe, Orton, McClain, Gordon(in that order). Trade Dorsey for picks, promote Gordon to DT/DE.
If google et al. did blackout
That could cause some economic harm, depending upon how the blackout was implemented. It would be a pretty extreme measure and should only be reserved if the current black-outs fail to stop the legislation.

Wikipedia is open-source/non-profit
Google is not. Given the amount of advertising deals they are involved with, Google could not afford to blackout.
Nicknames I have coined:
Jamaal Charles = 'Haley's Comet'
Shaun Smith = 'Big Nasty'
Kelly Gregg = 'Old Gregg'
Google has "blacked out" its logo and links to an online petition protesting SOPA/PIPA.

TL:DR version >>
PIPA and SOPA give the government the power to shut down any website that they deem is participating in copyright infringement. That means anything deemed to infringe on a copyright, from a torrent of Thriller to a video of you singing “Party in the USA” on YouTube, could get the offending site shut down, at the discretion of the government.
An even worse implication of the proposed acts is that it sets a pretty dangerous precedent for censoring the internet. It might not seem like a big deal now, but setting that precedent now will lead to bad, bad things happening down the road.
by DanielH123 on Jan 18, 2012 10:51 AM CST reply actions 1 recs
Exactly. I keep seeing people make the argument that "obviously the intent isn't to shut down major websites over a small, user-generated infringment." Well if it's not about that, don't give the bill that kind of power.
Giving the government the power to censor the internet essentially at their discretion and then just trusting them never to do so is a terrible idea.

Haley did not make an accusation. He had a strong suspicion shared by many
Wearing a seat belt is not an accusation. It’s taking a precaution. Haley said he was taking precautions because he had strong suspicions shared by many, many others—— as reported by SI and the KC Star.
I think you're in the wrong comments section.

amen
It’s too easy for the government to sneak legislation through without the majority of Americans knowing about it. It scares me to think what the America my kids grow up in will be like with stuff like this getting through.
Especially when their is a media blackout on these bills.
I remember after it passed the senate and house, not one story about it on any of the major networks. The only people who were talking about it were small media outlets and Jon Stewart. It shows you that MSM is nothing more then a propaganda machine for the corporatocracy. George Carlin was so right…
