Kansas City Chiefs Coordinator Search Continues

With the start of a new week we thought we'd update you on the Kansas City Chiefs offensive and defensive coordinator search.

The update: there is no update.

Not much is going on (at least publicly) with the Chiefs coordinator search but they're surely working on the process internally. Romeo Crennel indicated last week that he would be interviewing candidates this week and perhaps even the following week.

The coaching staff is making their way to Orlando this week, site of the East-West Shrine game. Many times these postseason all-star games like the East-West Shrine game and the Senior Bowl are similar to job fairs for out-of-work coaches looking to catch on with a team.

In other coaching staff moves, there's been a report that the Chiefs lost a couple of assistant coaches but that hasn't been confirmed anywhere so we'll keep an eye out for that.

Hey Joel. What are your thoughts on whether the Arrowgate

controversy might scare away potential coordinators. I’m personally concerned that Arrowhead will be seen as a toxic environment, but hope that those “in the know,” or at least those that know RAC, would feel otherwise.

I think it might already be looked at that way.
I’m personally concerned that Arrowhead will be seen as a toxic environment, is already a toxic wasteland of bile and feces, where coaches go to die.

Muir: “Help, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up?”
Pioli: “Congratulations, you are the new offensive coordinator.”

You have to wonder if any decent coaches are going to want to get wrapped up in

all of this drama that is encompassing Arrowhead recently…

I suppose it comes down to money, but with the Chiefs being labeled cheap in that regard, it would be hard to see them win out over other teams if the offers are similar. Especially if these coaches think that Scott Pioli might get fired in the coming months.

Who would come here to sit at the dysfunction table?

Everyone keeps rabble rabble rabbling about how serious these allegations are.

If they are that serious, you don’t think that a potential coach might think that an executive like Pioli under fire could be let go in today’s NFL?.

Which in turn might start another regime change that would have said coach looking for work in a few months when all the jobs are gone.

It’s not just the one little thing from Haley, or the comments by a few disgruntled employees, or the Babb article. It’s that these things keep coming. The list is now 3 items long. Regardless of the weight of any one thing, when/if we get up to 5 or 6 or … items, all of which will be over-talked about, they will all carry more weight, together. Then once you believe it because of its weight, you believe ALL the items, and there’s yer snowball.

But given the “toxic” work environment over at Arrowhead, it is no wonder we keep being forced to promote from within.

Nicknames I have coined:

Jamaal Charles = 'Haley's Comet'
Shaun Smith = 'Big Nasty'
Kelly Gregg = 'Old Gregg'

If we hire from withing, I'm seriously considering giving up next season already

The constant voids at important coaching spots on the staff have proven not to work. And if nobody comes in that can do a good job with Matt Cassel (until I’m proven otherwise, we’re stuck with him), what is the point of having hope this year? Unless we can become the 2000 Ravens on defense, I guess.

I second that

Clements from Green Bay would be a great hire.

OC would be a perfect next step for him. He could do wonders with all our talent coming back. That would set him up to eventually take over for RAC.

How long should you try? Until.

Steve Sarkisian

I know I know: a young college head coach? But I know Steve, we were one class apart at El Camino College. The man is a winner : high school and college as a player/coach. Look at what he is done at USC and Washington. USC scored MORE points when he became OC and Washington just scored 56 in their bowl game.

He wouldn't even entertain offers from St. Louis to be a HC

No way is he leaving UW. I’m a huge fan, I went to school with Chris Polk and have followed UW closely since Sarks arrival.

romeo's staff is just as if not more important than romeo

id love to know who is rumored to be leaving

i cant imagine losing the defensive staff, there are multiple guys coaching there in gibbs, thomas pleasent who id prefer not to lose. then on offense, id keep parmale personally, just because of how well the hb’s played despite losing their star at the position.(see battle, jackie) i guess you keep zorn

but the rest of the offensive staff, and our special teams coach, should all pretty much be shown the door, im hoping they are the ones rumored to leave

Falcons got Mike Nolan

For the people that thought there was a chance he was coming here as DC…I never saw it.

by kcsno56 on Jan 17, 2012 2:02 PM CST reply actions

This

there was no way nolan was coming here to run Romeo’s defense. Although Atlanta in a 3-4 is a bit of a head scratcher to me if he’s bringing that with.

Romeo is calling plays.

So anyone looking for a big name hire on that side are setting themselves up for disappointment. If they hire a DC at all (not a sure thing), it will likely be a promotion for Gibbs.

by Tarkus on Jan 17, 2012 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

I wouldn't mind our secondary coach get a promotion.

But then again I’d rather Crennel stay at D.C and hire a offense minded H.C who like to run the ball. Either way it still sucks because the offense will be getting changed again as we continue the cycle of hurting the team by that alone. I for one would like for our QB’s to learn a offense, then get to play that offense for several years.

Sounds like they're running a 4-3.

Nolan coached a four man front with the Jints in the mid-90’s, he’ll be fine. That team needed some new schematic blood anyway, on both sides of the ball.

Bring in Jim Caldwell

We’ve all seen what he can do when he has a competent offense. Not to mention what signing Caldwell would do to increase the chances of seeing Peyton Manning in a Chief’s uniform next year.

Do we really know what Jim can do?

Peyton Manning is the coach for that team when he ’s on the field.

Given he's had Manning all those years...

He’s surely done something right to be with the team for 10 seasons.
And to be perfectly honest the fact that it would make our chances of getting Manning (If he’s healthy) even slightly greater would be enough for me to want the Chiefs to sign him.

by RAC City Chiefs on Jan 17, 2012 3:30 PM CST up reply actions

It would be great to have Manning so don't get me wrong when I say no thanks.

Just think we need to look to the future with young talent, and not a QB who might or might not be 100%. IMO if the Colts are letting him go something has to be wrong or they now something no one else does. Peyton if healthy should have about 3 years left so I’d build around that not get rid of him. The situation for them was great if they hadn’t won any games they could’ve also had Luck.

could’ve also had Luck??

Pretty super sure they are taking Luck. Not disqualified by winning a few.

Another year with the Chiefs picking through the left overs to find coaches.

Woohoo we get someone who really isn’t the best option for the job because the options are limited. Will this ever change, will I ever see a chiefs team that doesn’t have to pick through coaches that got fired or take a guy that doesn’t fit our scheme of things……………….I’m starting to wonder.

I wouldnt say we're picking through leftovers on OC

None of the ones that are very good have been hired yet and we don’t need a full fledged amazing DC because our HC is one.

I want Marty back and Crennel can stick to the D.C job.

Why?

What exactly did Marty accomplish here that you’d rather go back to that then try something else? I think the rose colored glasses are definately on when it comes to that era because of how bad the Chiefs were in the late 70’s and 80’s. Sure we won a lot of games, but didn’t have squat for playoff success outside of Joe Montana.

You do remember that for most of the 90’s, especially the early and mid 90’s, the Raiders, Chargers (outside of one lightning in a bottle Super Bowl run) and Seahawks were supplying us with half our win total. What happened when we played out of the division? We went 50/50 or worse against the other 4 AFC teams we played almost each year.

Marty was a great coach, and credit should be given for winning the games on your schedule, but he wasn’t going to win a Super Bowl with the way things were going.

Most guys looking for jobs fit those categories.

Unless you promote someone from a lower position.

by Tarkus on Jan 17, 2012 3:17 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

DC probably ought to, whether it's Thomas or Gibbs.

Both men have decent or better resumes for the position, although I wouldn’t necessarily trust either of them on their own (i.e. with an offensive minded head coach).

Who in the hell gets promoted on offense? Muir’s retiring or backing down to OL…are we promoting Zorn or Carthon?
