Giants Vs. Packers Open Thread
The New York Giants and the Green Bay Packers play in the NFC divisional round and believe it or not I'm not picking the Packers to win.
I think New York can do it. I think they pressure Aaron Rodgers, create a turnover or two and score enough points to beat the Packers. It's a big underdog pick but, like four years ago against New England, I think the Giants can win in a big upset.
Who ya got for the game?

I guess anyone that wants him will have to hope Philbin doesn’t go anywhere, otherwise Clemets probably just moves up the ladder in GB.

You go back last year when I was saying Cassel's numbers were an artifact of the run game and he was a bottom 10 QB in the NFL, and look at the comments.
A good number of Chiefs fans thought he was a top 15 QB ahead of Manning.

Unless my HD is broken I don't know how conclusive that was.
My TV showed the ball hitting the ground and popping out before any part of his body was conclusively down. It’s one of those plays though where you know he’s down even if the evidence isn’t there and the refs don’t seem to be able to call it as per the rule which states the video has to show it and they aren’t allowed to think for themselves.

I think we should find out by trading Cassel to AZ for a draft pick.
As bad as Cassel has been, he's probably shown enough to have some trade value.
Especially this offseason where there won’t be enough Qbs to go around. Maybe to his old USC coach?

And a real late score made the game look closer than it really was. But yeah, better red zone offense would have resulted in a blowout.

zero
a FA QB isn’t going to sign with a team and then that team is going to turn around and trade him. He’ll sign on with the highest bidder. If a team wants him, they will outbid other teams to sign him and not give up a draft pick
Not only that
But it’d be worth fucking our chances at free agents when they see we sign people to trade them giving them no choice where they go when they could have signed somewhere they desired.

I always say that the key to elite offenses is getting as many guys as you can to play at a high level at the same
The Packers to start the season probably had 14 guys playing at a high level on offense there was simply no way they could keep that up and over the the last 6 weeks or so injuries and just players coming back down to earth is why the big drop off in the packers offense .
Still great but but instead of that 14 playing great its now down to maybe 6-7.
My fox channel just went with a creepy voice you hear on horror movies
lets just say I laughed so hard
Even with instant replay the MF can't get it right.
That was a fumble. The refs are for GB. I wan’t GB to win but thats BS when they don’t get the calls right.

by GenericBrand on Jan 15, 2012 5:21 PM CST up reply actions
I think
it will be 49rs vs Pats, but Giants vs Pats as you suggest would be a great superbowl.
giants vs pats is boring.
I like underdogs (9ers)
Uh
rematch for Superbowl XLII? You must be insane.
brady to TE, Elli to WR
Blah. Same show, I rather see something strange.
Strange?
49rs its going to be alex smith to vernon davis and run by gore and hunter.
Giants D against the Patriots O would be a great matchup, not to mention it will be much more personal matchup since Giants were the only ones to stop Brady that year, and would be very interesting to see how insanely Brady will play that game.
I still think the Niners are pretenders.
And I can’t see Alex Smith playing another 6 minutes like he did yesterday, ever again.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"

Alex Smith
has played that well consistently throughout the season though. Harbaughs really helped him limit his mistakes.
This is what happens

13-3 records, won against the saints
they be pretending
The Saints kept them in the game.
They had one of the easiest schedules in the league, play in the worst division in football(and its not even close) and if it isn’t for three first quarter turnovers they probably arent even in that game yesterday.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
by GenericBrand on Jan 15, 2012 5:31 PM CST up reply actions
so you're going to call them pretenders for playing good D?
ok..
I guess the chiefs been pretending all year
Also worst redzone efficiency in the league
And other then the Tampa game nothing they did this year was all that impressive.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
by GenericBrand on Jan 15, 2012 5:32 PM CST up reply actions
so I guess you were in favor of broncos going to the playoffs instead of the chiefs
because you know…our red zone sucked all year
If we made the playoffs we wouldnt be pretenders?
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
by GenericBrand on Jan 15, 2012 5:35 PM CST up reply actions
Hey hey hey
we are no pretenders… especially our D kept us in so many games while Cassel and Palko were starting for us. That is an admirable feat in itself.
Where exactly did I say that?
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
by GenericBrand on Jan 15, 2012 5:41 PM CST up reply actions
'if it isn’t for three first quarter turnovers they probably arent even in that game yesterday.'
yes they had 3 TO because the 9ers forced them to have have 3 TO
let me guess, having good D means pretending
So turnovers = good D?
Tell that to Packer fans.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
by GenericBrand on Jan 15, 2012 6:31 PM CST up reply actions
did you watch the game or are you just BSing?
yes the 49ers D was so bad that brees wouldn’t march up and down like he normally does
/sarcasm
472 yards, 32 points and one of those turnovers inside the 10 yard line.
Yep. Amazing defense there. You don’t think that game ends differently if Roby isn’t an idiot and Pierre Thomas doesn’t get horribly injured?
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
by GenericBrand on Jan 15, 2012 6:38 PM CST up reply actions
yes you're correct because turnovers magically come out of nowhere
nope defense not needed.
All the 9ers had to do was leave a saints player open and they will magically fall down and fumble the ball.
do you pray to tebow?
Depends how you look at it I guess.
I saw a Saints team that could’ve run away with it if they dont shoot themselves in the foot. Alex Smith was impressive in the last few minutes of the game but I just don’t seem him duplicating that again.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
by GenericBrand on Jan 15, 2012 6:40 PM CST up reply actions
yes because
some guy poking the ball away from your arms
good coverage
stopping the run
and pressuring the QB
all equals
bad defense
How did the defense make Roby cough up a punt return?
Nevermind. We’ll see next week I guess.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
by GenericBrand on Jan 15, 2012 6:48 PM CST up reply actions
so you're in favor of tebow going to the playoffs?
seriously if you win, does it matter if you’re a pretender or not?
if the goal is to prevent all pretenders from going to the playoffs,
might as well ban the chiefs from playing next year cause we won’t be the pats, packers, giants, or saints
according to generic, the packers didn't deserve to win the Sb
even though they had the higher score
Not sure how you're jumping to these conclusions.
If the Niners make the Super Bowl then I’ll gladly eat crow. Im just saying they’ve done absolutely nothing all that impressive this year.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
by GenericBrand on Jan 15, 2012 5:40 PM CST up reply actions

Not really.
You don’t get the wild discrepancy in records in MLB that you do in the NFL. .400 is about mediocre in football. In baseball, .400 means you’re horrible.
6 wins is mediocre?
Since 2005: Royals win% = .4100, Chiefs win% = .4095

by averagegatsby on Jan 15, 2012 6:49 PM CST up reply actions
That's .375
The Colts finished with a .125 winning percentage. When was the last time a MLB team finished anywhere close to that?
.400 is 6.4, you can't have .4 wins.
apples to oranges. if you take out the extremes due to sample size winning percentages level out.
Without doing the math, I would imagine if you took the average winning percentage of playoff teams in MLB and the NFL they would roughly be the same.
Since 2005: Royals win% = .4100, Chiefs win% = .4095
alot isn't a word.
by averagegatsby on Jan 15, 2012 6:56 PM CST up reply actions
But that wasn't my point.
the point was that Chiefs fans have no ground to stand on, because the Chiefs are bad too.

by averagegatsby on Jan 15, 2012 7:01 PM CST up reply actions
I'm not saying they haven't been.
I’m just saying their records aren’t a good comparison, because .410 is a lot worse in baseball than it is in football.
but as you increase the sample size the winning percent becomes more meaningful

Anyways, I get to watch em alot I had the league pass. Were inconsistent alot until they got healthy and hit that stretch. Seahawks and both Redskins game were terrible, but every teams got those games. They’ve come up big in big games this year, no? Not sure how you watching them more than me justifies them being over-rated?
U mean the cowboy games? Yea bc thats such a great team…giants r playing well right now, but all I’m saying is that they’re being hyped up right now by ppl who haven t watched them much …if they beat San Fran next week I’ll finally agree but I doubt that will happen so pls stop jumping on their bandwagon, packers playing terrible had more to do with them than the giants, giants only get credit for taking advantage of it
by Chiefs86 on Jan 15, 2012 6:54 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Whos jumping on the bandwagon? I'm saying THEY won, not the Packers lost
The whole points of being a good team is taking advantage of other teams mistakes man. The DL dominated, rushed his throws which could’ve contributed to some of those drops. We’re just gonna agree to disagree. Swearin they dropped 10-20 balls and the game was close or something.
Ive seen almost every game this year.
They suffered from inconsistency on both sides of the ball because of injuries. Early on in the secondary on defense then in the pass rush and on offense they had almost no running game all year because of injuries. Now they’re the healthiest they’ve been all year and are on a roll.

Brady would be so focused for that game… i wonder how intense Brady would be and how hard he would be on his teammates during the pats practices before the superbowl…
Yep I take Brady in that rematch
I respect the Pats because they are a true consistent winner and Brady is a legend
When you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.
Jamaal above all. #25 ftw.

Well I went 3 and 1 against the spread this weekend... Yay me, for not actually gambling
Since 2005: Royals win% = .4100, Chiefs win% = .4095
alot isn't a word.
Meh
I went 2-2. Saints didn’t do me justice
Jamaal Charles is here to kick ass and chew bubble gum; and he's all outta bubble gum.

the Saints had covered 9 in a row...
The odds of them covering 10 in a row was something like 1 in 500K
Since 2005: Royals win% = .4100, Chiefs win% = .4095
alot isn't a word.

Not when the first 9 were already out of the way.
If you flip a coin and come up with heads 9 straight times, tails still only has a 50% chance on the 10th (all else being equal).
What are the odds you'll get heads 8 times in a row then get tails the 9th time?

Toms gonna be angry next week.
The last time they played Baltimore at home in the playoffs he got bitch slapped.
"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"
I think we dont need an elite QB to win a SB
Just a really great defense and a good not great QB and a good duo in the backfield, look the teams in the final four: Ravens, elite defense, good not great QB, good running game; Giants, great defense, great duo in the backfield, altough they have a great QB but they are where they are ’cause their defense; Niners, good not great QB, good running game, great defense; and the exception, the Patriots, Elite QB, not good running game, bad defense.
Yep
3 out of the 4 teams have good defenses.

One high powered offense left.
How’s that idea about Franchise QBs being all you need to win working out now? Seems to me that the teams with the best defenses are winning play-off games. Alex Smith and the 49ers proving me right week after week.

14-3 right.
People think we need to trade away our draft for RG3 because it takes a good QB to win. I’ve been saying improve the o-line and add quality depth and we can win with Cassel/ Orton / Stanzi just like the 49ers are doing with A.Smith. IMHO A.Smith isn’t as good a QB as Cassel or Orton. We can win with a ball control offense and a good defense with Orton or Cassel. I’ll go even further IMO the 49ers will win it all.

Alex Smith was a #1 draft pick who played college ball and has had 8 different coordinators.
Cassel just sucks. Next excuse.

Harbaugh has found Alex Smiths potential. Matt Cassel has found his celiling, before he left New England.
He is rich thanks to, Randy Moss…uh huh
IMO the coaching staff knows what they have with A.Smith and their more or less doing what Weis did with Cassel.
They’re a ball control offense with a very good defense, and A.Smith is nothing more than a Game manager.

I don't even consider A.Smith a good QB.
It’s all about the coaching and the system in San Fran not how great A.Smith is. The 49ers defense and running game is what wins most of the games for them.

Dont know if is better than orton, but it's clearly better than cassel...... i dont see Cassel as a game manager, i see him as a bakcup QBetter than cassel...... i don
IMO A.Smith is just as much a Back up as either Cassel or Orton.
Yeah I would like a better situation at QB, but IMO Cassel could’ve won that many game at San Fran under that system, which is run the ball, control the clock and play good defense.

Alex smith was a 1st round draft choice who has conquered eight years of different coordinators
He is NOT matt cassel, he is WAY better.
LOL please.
Way better huh, I believe your wrong.

He's better because of the coaching staff, just like Cassel was with Weis.
Give him a shitty O.C and Coach and he goes right back to where he was, a below average QB.

Cassel wasn't even all that good with Weis
At least Smith shows some ability against good defenses

27 TDs 7 INTs isn't good ok.
Funny how people have forgotten what he did do considering all the changes in scheme and coaching staff.

Then next year
It will be two high powered offenses all over again, just the nature of the sport once you think you’ve got it figured out it turns itself on its head.

Cassel hasnt had the same oc ether.
get your facts straight. Its funny how these playoffs are unfolding.
IMO changing coaching staffs year after year is whats setting this team back, Lets just hope we've finally found the right guy for the H.C job and we find a good O.C that sticks.
