Saints Vs. 49ers: Divisional Round Starts In San Francisco

Photo

It's the divisional round of the playoffs. The New Orleans Saints go on the road to play the San Francisco 49ers. The game is at 3:30 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) and it's on FOX.

The Saints are the rare road favorite in the second round of the playoffs and most are expecting them to win. The 49ers defense is very, very solid and could make them earn it though.

Here's a link to SB Nation's story stream on the game where there will be a bunch of highlight videos.

This is your open thread. Who ya got?

Hard to decide who to root for here.

Love Drew Brees, but I also love the football the 49ers play.

The way the game is going right now,

it appears that who plays better defense today will win!

by angrydeafman on Jan 14, 2012 3:57 PM CST reply actions

Yep.

It will be whoever allows the fewest points that wins.

by Tarkus on Jan 14, 2012 4:07 PM CST up reply actions

Nope. Offense wins.

You have to score more points than the other team to win the game.

Always a fan, win or lose. Go Chiefs!

by GetRight on Jan 14, 2012 4:22 PM CST up reply actions

The defense might not let them score much today

For constantly playing Palko, Haley needs to be fired

by ArrowheadHunter on Jan 14, 2012 4:34 PM CST up reply actions

I predict the 49ers will score first, with a TD pass.

Aside from that, I’d like to see the 49ers win. One less team potentially looking for a QB if they win at least one playoff game.

Was Smith ever a cassell? He actually played in college, then as a young pro. The truth is almost every quarterback in the league is further along in their development as rookies than cassell was this year.

by blooptaabi on Jan 14, 2012 4:13 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

smith, 4 OC in the first 4 years of his pro (or was it 3?)

fans hated him. People said he lack an arm, decision, or any skill at all.

sounds familiar?

by Chiefshero on Jan 14, 2012 4:14 PM CST up reply actions

I just meant to say I wonder if being on the field as a leader of a team during one’s early development (I.e. college) is an absolute necessity for success at the pro level, IR if that’s something one can learn later on.

This is why I want the Chiefs defense intact while adding few more key players. Defense wins championship!

Peyton factor = Go 49ers!

Even if there is the slightest chance that Peyton is healthy and is released the 49ers would be one of a few teams that would potentially make more sense than the Chiefs… thus, we should want Alex Smith to do well in the playoffs. :)

Man, how good does Alex Smith feel right now?

After being picked 1st overall over Rodger, nobody thought he would become good QB let along a decent until the 2011 season.

See! You don't need a dominant QB to win in the playoffs.

The saying is holding up… Defense wins championships! And we almost have a dominant one :) Was really curious of how this would go today.

the key is to get cassel mad like the vikings game this year

so if you believe he can make that throw

Why don’t you want him in KC? I don’t think he can make that throw nor want him in KC

by jcrunninwild on Jan 14, 2012 6:03 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Because he's inconsistent.

He’s made great throws of all kinds, including “that” one. He just doesn’t do it enough. He could also be better with pocket presence, reading defenses and going through his progressions. He’s good at times doing all those things, but again, not with any kind of consistency.

by Tarkus on Jan 14, 2012 6:06 PM CST up reply actions

This.

There was too many “wtf was that?” with Cassel more than “Hell, Yeah!”

I would rather say the latter more often than the former when it comes to the KC Chiefs QB!

by angrydeafman on Jan 14, 2012 6:21 PM CST up reply actions

I usually go to NFL.com

I just click on certain game and it will take me to the game center and click on the highlight just below the scorebox. There’s usually numbers of highlights on the right side.

For example, I just went to NFL.com and clicked on today’s game on top of their page, clicked on highlights and about 9 highlights for the game were available. (There are post game videos as well…I just ignore them)

Hope this helps.

so apparently the 49ers proved you can win a playoff game with a good, not great, quarterback, a great defense, and great special teams against an explosive offensive team. this gives credability to pioli’s plan to create an elite defense and a good, not great, offense in the age of great qb play.

Instant classic. NFL network should have the replay on tues

One of the best playoff games I've ever seen

Was it wild? In the last 5 minutes of the game, Alex Smith led the Niners on TWO scoring drives. Never in a million years did I think I’d see that.

Todd Haley lost 7 of his last 15 games by 20 or more points. It was time for him to go.
