Update on #Haleywatch: considering job with Jets, QB coach with Zona, and could join Marty in Tampa if he gets that job.

Whoa, Haley could join Marty? Talk about worlds colliding.

That does sound pretty good.

Reese’s Cups…. mmmm…

2012 Chiefs Draft Picks by Falcon58: G DeCastro 1st round, NT Ta'amu 2nd round or OT Adcock 2nd/3rd round, TE Egnew 3rd round, RB Ganaway 5th/6th, QB Case Keenum 5th/6th. Resign: Carr, Bowe, Orton, McClain, Gordon(in that order). Trade Dorsey for picks, promote Gordon to DT/DE.

I'm sure this has been addressed here

before by someone. I haven’t read it yet, but what I’ve been thinking is if Marty accepts the Tampa job what does that say about us? We know Clark talked to him before hiring Pioli. It’s always came through the media that Schottenheimer’s wanted to stay out of a front office/coaching job because he’s “retired”. Why he would coach in the UFL kinda flies in the face of that notion though. If he passed on KC and takes the Tampa job I’m not sure what to think. There’s always a possibility he was never offered a job here, or maybe this year he’s more inclined to take a job in order to save his son’s career.

He wants to win a Super Bowl

Newest reports are that he’s fired up about coaching in the NFL again. Reports also say his son Brian wouldn’t be on his staff as he wants to blaze his own path. I would absolutely love a Marty/Haley pairing in TB!

by MattHoover on Jan 13, 2012 10:31 AM CST up reply actions

That's what the fuck I'm talking about

He doesn’t want to come to KC because he wants to win a Super Bowl? He thinks Tampa has a better shot? He picked the Glaser’s over the Hunt’s? Uh, what?

#82 - Pay The Man & Play The Man

by KansasCityShuffle on Jan 13, 2012 10:34 AM CST up reply actions

That has nothing to do with it

Coming back to KC would be a huge mistake both for him and for the Chiefs. The expectations and attitudes of all involved would be totally out of wack. Imagine getting divorced in your 40s and then trying to rekindle a relationship with an old college girlfriend. It would be doomed to failure.

by cheapham on Jan 13, 2012 10:49 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

He would be set up to fail in KC, because of the expectations. In TB, just getting to the playoffs would make him a hero. Anything beyond that would be gravy.

by Tarkus on Jan 13, 2012 12:35 PM CST up reply actions

Or Pioli and Clark picked Crennel over Marty.

Ah, I missed that part.

Then, I’d guess Clark picked him over Pioli since Pioli was the spicy meatball at the time, and then Pioli picked Haley over Marty because they were familiar with each other.

Did Marty want back in back then?

That was before the ‘09 season. I don’t remember him being seriously talked about anywhere.

it's been reported that weis had nothing to do with Cassel in 2010, it was all Haley...

So I guess Haley can polish a turd for so long…

It was also reported by whats Wright

That a reason Weis left was because Haley was getting all the cred for Cassel’s turnaround. when it was really Weis doing the turd work

by The Man with the Master Plan on Jan 13, 2012 11:29 AM CST up reply actions

You have that backwards...

Wright reported what SFLChief stated that Weis said Cassel couldn’t function in Haley’s offense so Weis told Haley to do it himself. Haley said fine and Cassel was excelling and Weis began taking credit for something he had no hand in. This really pissed Hakey off and ultimately ended in Weis leaving.

by jsChiefs23 on Jan 13, 2012 11:56 AM CST up reply actions

If this is true the thank God Haley's gone.

Who cares who gets the credit?

Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family.

by Rev. Slappy on Jan 13, 2012 1:40 PM CST up reply actions

If that were true (that Haley, not Weis, was responsible for Cassel’s “success”) wouldn’t you want Haley to still be here?

"Hater" is a term used by weak-minded people in the face of legitimate criticism.

by JComp11 on Jan 13, 2012 2:57 PM CST up reply actions

I think it goes both ways.

If Haley was responsible for Cassel’s success than yes you would like him to still be here. If problems started arising because of who took the credit than I would say no you wouldn’t want Haley here if your head coach is bickering about who takes the credit.

by jsChiefs23 on Jan 13, 2012 3:10 PM CST up reply actions

As head coach the only thing you should ever care about is if you win or not.

If Haley was actually upset that he wasn’t getting the credit for Cassel’s play last year then….I don’t know what to say about that. It’s inane and petty and childish and stupid.

He was the head fucking coach. If the team plays well he’s going to get the credit for it.

So what about 2009 and 2011?

Did Haley not work with Cassel those years?

by Tarkus on Jan 13, 2012 12:36 PM CST up reply actions

who knows? I guess he could only polish the turd for so long...

in all seriousness though I think that Haley will do wonders working with Shotty and having Freeman as a QB with Winslow and Blount, they need to upgrade at WR though…

Somehow I Doubt It

I’m sorry, but the guy showed no ability to run an offense while he was here. He was pretty damned awful at it. in fact. If I had to bet on it, I’d say that Haley doesn’t end up as a coordinator anywhere this year. So far we’ve heard he’s going to the Cardinals…they don’t hire him (and Whisenhunt knows the guy and has worked with him). Then we hear he might be going to the Jets and we hear about him being co-coordinator with Sparano (who gets hired by the Jets, without Haley), now we’re hearing it’s the Bucs. I’m betting he doesn’t get hired there as an OC either. Actually, I’m starting to suspect that the only person talking about getting hired onto all of these jobs is Todd Haley…dropping stories into the ears of all the people he met while working for ESPN. If he resurfaces as a coach, I’d be willing to bet position coach is the best deal he’ll get starting out.

And the stories about how Haley supposedly was the one who turned Cassel around? Not buying it…at all. Cassel stunk in 2009 and 2011 (when Haley was in control of the offense) and was good in 2008 and 2010 (when Haley wasn’t running the offense). I think that’s a large enough sample size to conclude that Haley’s rep as an offensive mastermind was overblown.

by UCrawford on Jan 13, 2012 1:18 PM CST up reply actions

agreed

Interesting how the performance of a mediocre QB can say so much about the quality of a coach. I think Haley’s best shot at gainful employment in 2012 will be as a position coach. IMO the most substantiated credit he can really hang his hat on is his work with WR’s over the years. If I’m an owner, GM or HC, I don’t want to risk the mental state of my QB with a guy who may or may not be a fully qualified tyrant.

Agreed About His Work As WR Coach

He did a good job with Larry Fitzgerald by all accounts, and Fitzgerald apparently credits him with a lot. There’s just a big difference between that and OC, though. The offense in Arizona performed pretty much the same with him as it did without him (indicating to me that Whisenhunt had a big hand in the offense) and I thought he was a terrible playcaller and in-game strategist while he was in KC. It wasn’t just he made a few bad calls…every coach does that. It’s that he made a lot of mind-bogglingly stupid calls…on lineups, strategy, and staff.

I think he’s been Peter Principled as a good position coach who’s probably in over his head when it comes to managing large groups of people.

by UCrawford on Jan 13, 2012 3:35 PM CST up reply actions

Now THAT would be cool...

An all former Chiefs head coaching staff? Marty at HC, Todd at OC, Herm at DC….

And I LIKE Tampa Bay anyway… hee hee hee…. At least I’ve seen one favorite team win a Super Bowl in my lifetime…

I'm guessing Herm is holding out for a HC job or likes his soft TV job.

I’m surprised that you never hear his name circulated during the annual carousel. I still think he would be a terrific defensive coach for somebody. I just think he’s a crap HC.

He was thrown in an environment here were he was destined to fail without the support of the front office, and a very lazy group of players he had to be a hardass to. He’ll be very successful somewhere.

In after two days wasn’t the same as Crennel putting him in three weeks being with the receivers… he wasn’t against putting Orton in… see the Chicago game.

pointless argument at this point

Perceptions are set, and what really happen will soon purge from even those who where involved.

Teams management didn’t gel, and work as a team, so one guy was booted. Lets hope the new guys gel as a team instead of tear down the team.

Orton should have started the Chicago game

Haley was either being spiteful because he knew he was gone anyway, or he just made a really poor decision (which started with him bringing Palko in from AZ).

It very possible both were going at it in this way over some “Philosophical Difference”

by Bigcherokeechief on Jan 13, 2012 11:42 AM CST up reply actions

fact is we like the simple story, because it allows us to hate Haley and move

on, while not wanting to throw the rest of management out.

And since we might not ever know what actually went on, it doesn’t matter really.

But I could see a off season dispute gong lil something like this

End of last year, Haley wanting to get rid of Cassel. Pioli saying why would you get rid of a 10 and 6 QB.. but agreeing to take a QB in the draft, During the draft instead of listenign to what Haley wants drafts Stanzi because he come highly recomended by a good friend, and its even possible that Haley was shooting for Dalton, or someone like that. So this causes more friction.. Then the coach ask the GM to try and pull in a veterian, but is told he will have to stick with palko.. And more friction, by this time the coach knows the GM wants him gone.. But a maraculous turn around stalls the GM’s plan, then it resumes ad the team starts losing, and accelerates after losing cassel.. by this team the friction between gm and HC is red hot, … HC plays palko over stanzi believing stanzi to be worse, and doesn’t bow to pressure because he is going to be fire anyway and decides he will go out his way.

IM NOT SAYING THAT IS HOW IT WENT DOWN, BECAUSE I DON’T KNOW..

But from some of the rumors I’ve heard this senerio is not complete out of bounds either.

by Bigcherokeechief on Jan 13, 2012 12:02 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think so

Haley can’t work with any coach with an ego….so that includes them all.

Haley will bump heads with Rex

He may be ok with Wisenhunt since they dud it before.

Haley and Marty?? What the..? Marty is known for raising up young and up and coming coaches…..not egotistical hot headed losers.

Very interesting

If Haley’s eaten his helping of humble pie, working with Schottenheimer could be a good polishing experience for him. Could make him the HC in waiting there. Good for them both if they can make the most of it.

Marty actually gets the job before we start assigning Tamba Bay all of the Chiefs old Head Coaches in positional jobs…

Come on…

Or if you do it, do it right.

GM
Carl Peterson
Coach
Marty Schottenheimer
OC
Dick Vermeil
WR
Todd Haley

DC
Gunther Cunningham
DB
Herman Edwards…

I mean really, might as well do it big.

Though perhaps we can actually let the guy get the job… which if they were going to hire him, they probably would have pulled the trigger already IMO.

Meh...
