If Brandon Carr and/or Dwayne Bowe both do not get an extension with the Chiefs do you see the Chiefs how do you see the Chiefs addressing both needs come draft time?

KC_Chiefs

Just getting a little tired of the regular mock draft talk, and wanted to factor in possibilities of how they all change if one or both key guys are not back with the Chiefs next season.

If both of them walk...

we have a shitty owner. The minimum they should do is sign one and then a tag and trade. I’m hoping the re-sign Carr and then tag Bowe. Otherwise we are moving backwards.

If they both walk, then i think they both decided they didn't want to be here.

I don’t really think it’ll happen that both walk. And this OP is just a hypothetical.

I would put CB as a priority if we lose Carr, which I believe is very likely

Kirkpatrick or Claiborne would be good fits where we are drafting. I like either one’s potential to fill in pretty quickly.

Although, maybe I’m underestimating the team’s feelings on Travis Daniels, who had filled in nicely in spot starts and dime packages. Maybe he is ready to step into a permanent role

I'm so overrated, I'm underrated.

If we lose Bowe, I will have lost all faith I had in Pioli.

Bowe can just be franchised and we don’t have to worry about him. As for Carr, I don’t understand why we’re holding it up. We have so much cap room that the only possible reason I could see for letting him walk is if he doesn’t want to play here (which I doubt), we’re trying to sign Manning (we’d probably still be able to fit Carr in), or some other team is willing to make him one of the top 5 paid corners in the league. Otherwise, we should be able to match anything any other team can offer and it would definitely be worth it.

Even if they are trying to make him a top ten paid CB

It would be hard to justify paying both him and Flowers as top ten CBs.

Not when your payroll is as low as ours

Clark said they spent like 120 million in cash for last league year. That was with a DJ and Charles extension, making Berry the highest paid S in the league, and taking a huge chunk of Cassel’s contact, like 11 million or something. A Bowe and Carr extension would not be as impactful as Hali and Flowers extension. We can give two big contracts every offseason and be fine, anything else is just Clark being cheap. If he feels he can pay only one o them it should be Carr, good CBs are harder to find then productive WRs. And then we should at least get picks or Bowe win the franchise tag. I don’t know, this offseason will be very telling.

by Crown Chief on Jan 13, 2012 3:22 AM CST up reply actions

Having a low payroll doesn't mean you over-invest in one position

Especially if they believe someone else can step in for a lot less cost, such as Daniels. I’m not as bully on Carr as some, as I see a barely above-average corner who took a step into top ten in a contract year. If he wants at most a higher end #2 CB contract, give it to him. If he wants Revis/Aso/Flowers money, let him walk

I'm so overrated, I'm underrated.

Agreed

However with the NFL becoming more and more a passing league, that can justify overspending on the secondary

I can't really fault that line of thinking.

Seriously?

You guys think Daniels could step in and do what Carr does? Daniels is horrible, and if Carr is so barely above average, why is he in the top 10 on some stats out of ALL the other CB’s out there. I’d almost rather have Carr than Flowers

I eat success for breakfast....with skim milk.

He said that "if they believe someone else can step in"

And used Daniels as one possibility.

The Chiefs talent evaluators would know if we had someone who could step in. Be it on the roster now, draft pick, or free agent.

Obviously if they don’t believe we have someone that could reasonably step in and do the job, you can ignore the rest of his comment.

I wouldn't worry about the delay

Free agency doesn’t start for another two months, plenty of time to get at least one deal done & franchise the other.

If one, or both of these contracts do not get done,

I have serious questions about how we plan to meet this salary cap floor when it is put into full effect. We are a team that has chosen the route of drafting and developing their own players, and not one who makes sizable splashes in free agency.

With that in mind, these two contracts are no-brainers. I understand the fear and anxiety because they are not done NOW, but I have faith that these will get done in time.

Let’s also consider that there are still some unknowns for the players, as well… Like, say who their defensive and offensive coordinators will be. I would want to know that if I were Carr / Bowe.

by Chris Sembower on Jan 13, 2012 1:48 AM CST reply actions

Just my two cents

This team has consistently stated over and over that they want to build the right 53 which include guys that are consistent and work hard all the time. Yes I know it’s an overused phrase but bare with me…

They have proven over the past couple of years that they will pay their own. We’ve resigned Johnson, Flowers, Hali, Charles,, Succop, Studebaker, and Greenwood to name a few. I have faith that if Carr and Bowe have truly bought in these deals will get done. If they haven’t fully bought in and try to break the bank then they will be elsewhere. None of the contracts we handed out were the max at any of the positions they play and really only Hali got paid top money at his position even though you could certainly make a case for Charles deserving to be among the highest paid RB’s.

This to me is not an either or situation

I don’t see how you can justify building through the draft, developing your own talent, and then letting it walk in it’s prime.
Both these guys are studs.

by PrairieSchooner on Jan 13, 2012 8:27 AM CST reply actions

hope they sign both

But if not, we have to draft CB IN round 1 or 2. If we loose bowe we don’t have to draft WR that early.

Which makes Carr more important

by chiefnation on Jan 13, 2012 8:54 AM CST via mobile reply actions

i think they keep both

They will sign Bowe, franchise Carr and then work on his deal

by stagdsp on Jan 13, 2012 9:48 AM CST via mobile reply actions

You gotta sign both

But if they can’t sign both. My best options..
1 sign carr tag bowe trade sign best wr in fa
2 sign bowe draft Harris
3 tag bowe trade and draft Floyd or Jeffery and draft Harris or sign best fa cb

Let Bowe walke and bring back Chris Chambers and Bobby Wade

Isn't the 30% rule in place for Carr?

I thought part of the new CBA was that he couldn’t be paid more than 30% over what he made the previous season. If it’s true it scares me because maybe all the teams can only pay Carr a certain amount and he knows that, maybe he’d just rather play somewhere else, like his hometown in Detroit.

I could be wrong though.
