What The Chiefs Are Saying About Kyle Orton
The Kansas City Chiefs brass has making the rounds this week talking with the radio stations in town along with some local TV and the question we've heard the most is asking what the Chiefs will do with Kyle Orton and Matt Cassel.
The talking point seems to be that Orton, an unrestricted free agent, is not on the team anymore. And moving forward he will choose where he wants to go.
"Kyle did a very good job for us in those three games and no one who watched those three [games] can dispute that," Romeo Crennel told Kevin Kietzmann on 810 WHB's Between The Lines this week.
"Now he will have a choice in his free agency of choosing where he wants to go and so what we are going to do is evaluate personnel here over the next couple of weeks and prioritize our list of free agents who we would like to pursue and then go from there.
"Right now I am not able to tell you if Kyle...where Kyle is on that list. I can't tell you whether he is at the top of the list. I am not saying he is at the bottom of the list, but he will be on that list somewhere and then we'll make a decision after we compile the list."
But he's on the list....somewhere. Whether that's high or low, we don't know. But that Crennel says he's on the list indicates the Chiefs have at least some level of interest in retaining him.

Tough to read their thoughts
but it sounds like they’re just keeping all options open. If they’re able to keep Orton, great. If not, they don’t want to leave Cassel feeling like he’s worthless. My guess is, they won’t give us any hints on this until free agency starts and offers roll in for Orton.
I believe in the Chiefs' Way. Someday, we will set the standard for how to be a championship team!

If I have to endure
another season with the joke that is Matt Cassel running our offense. Fuck it pisses me off just thinking that our Defense may be great and we have that Noodle armed fuck throwing the ball and running the plays. And I don’t care if he is a good guy, he has no pocket presence, cannot make down field reads and throws like a high school kid. Please Pioli, Crennel etc.. open your damn eyes

GUESS THAT MAKES YOU PRETTY FOOTBALL KNOWLEDGABLE. ORTON IS A PRETTY GOOD QB, BUT I THINK YOU HAVE TO PUT A LOT ON THE ACTUAL PLAY CALLING. IF YOU’LL NOTICE, AFTER HALEY WAS FIRED, THE PLAY CALLING SEEMED TO CHANGE, HENCE, BETTER LUCK WITH THE BALL, AND I DIDN’T NOTICE MUCH OF A CHANGE IN THE RED ZONE, EITHER, WHICH SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM ALL THE WAY AROUND. I believe that Romeo in his heart wants Orton to be his OB, at least for now..
The big ? is will Pioli do what it takes to make it so….Can he really say to himself, " I need to cut ties with Matt" and………… Does Orton want to keep playing in KC?
Koolta: A die hard chiefs fan
Why wouldn't he?
He was 2-1 with them and should’ve been 3-0. Other than money there should be 0 reasons for him to go somewhere else.
by Kcbiggyblue on Jan 12, 2012 8:40 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
His reason to go somewhere else would be to start.
As long as Cassel is on this team…I can’t even imagine them not starting him. Orton will likely sign with a team that will guarantee him the starting job. And I just don’t see the Chiefs being one of those teams.
My earliest Chiefs memories are watching guys named Dawson, Podolak, Taylor, Thomas, Bell, and Buchanan. So, yeah...I'm kind of an old fart.
Agreed, he wants to be the guy long term.
And like I said, Pioli has not really given up on Cassel yet… And Orton knows this. He said it himself " This is Matt’s team"….. But he should ask himself, Should this be Matt’s team?
Koolta: A die hard chiefs fan
"Should this be Matt’s team?"
You mean the same question we’re all asking?
Pioli continuing to gamble on Cassel could ultimately cost him his job here. I would personally hate to tie my success to Cassel. But, that’s just me.
My earliest Chiefs memories are watching guys named Dawson, Podolak, Taylor, Thomas, Bell, and Buchanan. So, yeah...I'm kind of an old fart.
if pioli will allow for open competition between orton and cassel if im orton i sign with kc
kc is orton best shot at being a starter. if i’m kyle i put it on the line with pioli. i say scott here’s the deal i will sign with kc, as long as u allow and honor your word on having full and complete open competition for the qb spot. orton will beat out cassel for the job if that happens.

He not going to want to start, where even a hint of QB controversy is in play. basically, he said Trade Matt Cassel or release him, then I will consider your team.

Kyle Orton is the human embodiment of the qb controversy concept.
The sun rises in the east, everybody dies and Kyle Orton will be involved in a qb controversy wherever he goes. He’s just good enough to get the job. but never good enough to keep it….whether it’s his fault or not.

What NFL team would "guarantee" a starting job
to a free agent signing? That sounds unlikely.
Kyle, while saying the right things, is probably evaluating which teams he thinks would have interest and the QB’s on the roster he would have to compete with for the starting job. After that evaluation, it’s difficult to make a list of those teams where KC wouldn’t be at or near the very top.

Because he wants a long term deal(Orton)..And I think Pioli is having a hard time in wanting to give him one..
Pioli has not given up 100% yet on Cassel.
Koolta: A die hard chiefs fan
I don't see why he would want to leave either
A lot of people say that there are QB needy teams out there, but I don’t really see that. Indy is going to take Luck and Cleveland/Washington/Miami/Seattle will likely trade up to get RG3.
I don’t think he’d want to go to Cleveland because they are very bad and have a young QB that they hope will pan out. Orton was already part of that in Denver and I highly doubt that he enjoyed that experience.
Miami has Matt Moore who just came off a career year. Orton has a better shot at taking Cassel’s job than Moore’s job right now.
Washington and Seattle might give Orton a shot. Two things to remember though. First, Matt Flynn is out there right now and someone is going to take a shot at him before Orton. I’m basing this on the past few years with backups being hot commodities (Cassel and Kolb). Secondly, Either of these teams might also take a chance on a QB in the draft.
KC has Cassel who looked awful when he was in this year. I think Orton might have the best chance to start in KC. No matter where he goes, there will be a QB controversy. Since he can’t avoid it, why not stay in KC where he has a good shot at taking the starting roll and beating Denver twice a year and then laughing in Tebow’s face after those games?
Agreed with all this...
I also don’t see why Orton would really worry about Cassel still being on the roster. Clearly Orton is the better option and its not like Cassel has a huge price tag for the next two year. The only reason I see Pioli not wanting to sign a long term deal with Orton is that he wants a young QB to take the reigns. If that is the case I can’t really fault him for that logic but I think he wants to win now. Let’s be honest Pioli doesn’t care who the QB is as long as we are winning. This him admitting a mistake is something the media dreams up. He made the best choice at the time with Cassel (Remember Thigpen, Huard, and Croyle were on the team when he got here). I promise you he would make the trade again in a heartbeat. There is a reason he front loaded his contract from the beginning.

Even is Indy lets Manning go, he won't come here unless we make big improvements on the offensive line.
And I would not blame him for that one bit…..
Koolta: A die hard chiefs fan
True
Maybe he’d want to bring Saturday with him. Trading a 39 yr old C for a 36 yr old C doesn’t seem like much of an upgrade, but the familiarity those two have with each other may sway him. Put Hudson in at G to replace Lilja, draft an OT in the first or second, then we’re set.
Predictions:
I'm going to stop predicting positive things
Manning isn't going to happen
Jim Irsay said explicitly that under no condition will he trade Manning. The only way he’s not on that team is if he is released because he is medically unable to perform.
So in the case that he is released, he’s not going to be a suitable pick-up for another team.
I would either give up on the idea of Manning, or set your expectations of him coming here down around the 1% range… or lower.

I listened to an interview
with a beat reporter who knows the Colts well and he said only way Manning comes free is if he asks for a trade or waiver. I kinda think what Archie said the first time is what Manning feels so this is not an impossible thing to happen. I tedn to think Peyton might ask for this if he’s healthy. Of course, if they tell him one more year to start while Luck waits in the wings, then he won;t come free until after next season.
i would give it a better than 50% chance manning comes to kc
the colts won’t want to pay all that dough they owe manning and then spend more dough on luck, its about 50 mill tied up in the qb spot. the other motive i have is that irsay came out and said he and manning were going to sit down and jointly decide what to do with peyton manning. i say there a legit shot he plays in kc this year.

I think Orton should be our QB and gives our team the best chance to win
But is anyone else curious to see what Cassel can do without Haley and all circus that was his offense and offensive staff? Almost all of us were excited when he was traded for. He had some crazy games in NE and a few good ones here. This was the first year he had a real QB coach. He’s had 5 OC in 4 years (1 in NE). Haley always meddled in the offense here, enough to cause a rift with Weis. They also couldn’t get plays in on time this entire year until Haley was gone. Nearly every snap they were walking up to the LOS with 5-10 seconds to snap the ball. Haley’s offense also never seemed to have any kind of flow or organization to it and half the time it seemed like no one knew what they were supposed to be doing.
Not apologizing for Cassel. I would rather have Orton but it would be interesting to see if it is more Cassel or more Haley that caused the problems. Cassel showed in NE that he could wing the ball. Haley showed in AZ that he could run an offense that was already in place and with a HOF QB.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
At this point in time you are Correct sir.. Orton does give us the best chance to win.
Koolta: A die hard chiefs fan
In 3 years I think it shows that Cassel needs to be protected and can't be counted to throw a team on his back and win
Both Orton and Stanzi (from what I saw in college) are better pure passers. Orton can be a legitimate starter in this league and given good receivers I think he can do really good things. Cassel may need great receivers though.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
honestly
I think our (KC’s) receiving core is pretty good… as long as we resign Bowe.
Max: Two days ago, I saw a vehicle that would haul that tanker. You want to get out of here? You talk to me.
If we resign Bowe and Balwin takes a step forward
then I think we may have one of the best in the league.
Weapon wise I think our QB will have a lot to work with. If Moeaki and Charles both come back at full strength and stay healthy, plus Bowe, Baldwin, and Breaston. Thats good.
Our biggest problems are OLine and QB, in that order. Plus, give me a FB that can catch and I would be a happy guy.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
Depends on what we do with our offense.
McClain is a great blocking fullback who can run the ball as well. Haley didn’t know how to use a fullback though. Most of the time when we saw McClain he was on the sideline. If our next OC knows how to use a FB then I would love to keep him. He’s also not a great passcatcher. He’s never caught over 21 passes in a year. Not that I want my FB to be the leading receiver but I want both my backs to be good receivers that the QB can fall back on. I think McClain is an adequate receiver, much better than Bannon showed in the preseason.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
From what I remember
McClain was a very good receiver as well. the san diego catch where he got rocked and held on comes to mind
Gotta love a good pass rush.
I've seen enough of Cassel
I wasn’t happy when we picked him up. The only part of the deal I liked was Vrabel. All Cassel showed in NE is that he can step into a perennial SB contender and keep a well-oiled machine moving (although they were 16-0 before he stepped in, so really he took them back 5 wins).
Cassel is a one of the best backup QBs in the league. He’s a poor starting QB. Hopefully we sign Orton, he starts, and Cassel sits on the bench until a QB needy teams overpays for him or Orton gets hurt.
Bottom line..
We need a OB with the ability to go out and just plan win a game for us when nessasary, Not just MANAGE a game, but carry a team to victory. My ? is does anyone in Chiefs Nation feel Cassel has shown any ability to do just that since he has been in KC?
Koolta: A die hard chiefs fan
I don't see how anyone could say that he has shown that ability
As it seems with you, this the thing I can’t stand about Cassel. I don’t think it’s hard to find a QB that can go into a game with a solid run game and defense and “manage-out” a win. It is hard to find a QB that can throw the team on his back when the run game and/or defense aren’t playing well or are outmatched.
Orton might not be that guy either, but I do have much more faith in his ability to throw the team on his back than Cassel. A prerequisite to doing this is throwing the ball downfield, which Orton can do and Cassel can’t.
Cassel has only proven in 2.6 seasons that he
is mediocre, at best. Orton is not the long term solution but gives us a better chance to win by at least being an average skills quarterback who sometimes has flashes. Probably our best chance of getting a franchise quarterback is through the draft while someone (such as Orton) is the caretaker quarterback whom the youngster learns from. We just don’t know enough about Stanzi to know if he is “that guy” but I am guessing probably not. Can we get a franchise quarterback where we sit in the draft? Probably not without some movement. Sooooooo………….Orton or “free agency”? Looks like Orton.
"The Hammer"
Do you think Orton could be like Trent Green and come in and hold the job down for 5-6 years though.
I do. I think he could be a very good QB for 5-6 years, especially if we get a good OLine. Then do the draft a QB every year philosophy and find one stud over that time.
We have a lot of potential here to be something really good, if we can just fix our OLine and upgrade at QB.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
So now its Haley's fault...
That Matt Cassel continuously threw the ball behind his receivers? Sorry but I don’t buy it… Cassel is a good backup, and we need someone to take over the reigns of QB for the next 3 or more years until we can develop our QB of the Future.
Go Chiefs!!!!
No, not saying it's Haley's fault and I have been one of Cassel's bigger critics on here.
He consistantly throws the ball behind or high. I keep waiting for him to get a receiver killed because they have to jump and stretch to get a ball or stop and reach behind them. While he does that more often than I think a QB should, he isn’t complete junk and has had some (although few) good games for us. At times he has looked legit and accurate, usually on 2-minute drills or hurry up/no-huddle.
Coaches, systems, and continuity can make a big difference in what players succeed. My question is mostly a hypothetical in the same sense as the following. Would Alex Smith have had a good year prior to this if he didn’t have a new HC every 2 years and OC every year? Would Orton have had a different career if he had any sort of receivers to work with or if started on a better team.
So, generally I am asking, could any QB have succeeded in the system and dysfuntion that Haley had here on our offense for the last 3 years? No QB coach for two years. 4 OC in 3 years here. This year his OLine had no real coach since he was the OC. Plays couldn’t get in on time. The offense had no identity. B Rich played on our O-Line.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
I agree a little
so the best thing would be to have those two compete. Only problem with that is I don’t think orton will come here if he’s competing with Cassel… it’s a loyalty thing.
Don't they share the same agent
could that have any influence on his decision to come back.
Never argue with an Idiot...... they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
sometimes I wonder how they would do that chalk outline, if you pushed someone into a tree chipper.

Going by Crennels statement...
“… I can’t tell you whether he is at the top of the list. I am not saying he is at the bottom of the list, but he will be on that list somewhere and then we’ll make a decision after we compile the list.”
The part that negates him being on the bottom of the list is this “I am not saying he is at the bottom of the list”. This negates him being on the bottom of the list and places Orton in the Middle to Top of the list.
Joel stated:
But he’s on the list….somewhere. Whether that’s high or low, we don’t know. But that Crennel says he’s on the list indicates the Chiefs have at least some level of interest in retaining him.
So we can eliminate the low part. I think that for retention he is top 5 of our free agents. Including all free agents in the league he probably drops to right around the middle of the list.
Go Chiefs!!!!
Seattle, Miami, Washington, Cleveland, Jacksonville could all be interested in Orton
Unless they’ve given up on Cassel completely, which is doubtful, I don’t think they’ll work too hard at re-signing Orton. It’s a bit of a nightmare to have two average QBs on the roster anyway…if one has a bad game everybody is screaming for the other guy, the coach will always be second-guessed. Personally I’d cut/trade Cassel & re-sign Orton, but even that’s a tough call considering he only played three games for us (thanks again Todd)
Predictions:
I'm going to stop predicting positive things
Two good QB's needed
I agree this has the potential to be messy, but you have to have a better backup than the Palko-level QB. I don’t think many people will argue that Cassel isn’t a major step up from Palko. If they don’t make a move on a franchise QB prospect in the draft or FA, then keep both Cassel and Orton. We are good enough on D that our QB just needs to be a great offensive manager that is careful with the ball. And who knows, if we improve the O-line significantly, Kyle may surprise us. Like a lot of people have said, he hasn’t had this level of talent to throw to…ever. Feels great to say that!
Palko shouldn't
be wearing a KC Chiefs uniform….EVER.

I think it's safe to roll with Stanzi as our backup
There is absolutely no way that Palko is a better NFL QB than Stanzi…the only reason Palko was ahead of him is because he was Todd’s Guy.
Predictions:
I'm going to stop predicting positive things
I could see maybe Seattle and Jacksonville
being of some interest to Kyle. He may think he could beat out Tavaris Jackson in Seattle, and that the division is winnable. He may think he could easily beat out Gabbert, but the franchise is in a bit of flux with the new owner, and the division is tougher year in and out. But Miami has Moore coming off a good year, harder to win the job, but great city to be in. Washington has Grossman, I think, and Beck. Not sure he wants part of the Grossman/Orton ordeal again. Cleveland has McCoy, who they probably lean towards based on “franchise” hopes… probably looking at a back-up role.
But KC? He has to think he could win the job here, and he has some obvious familiarity with the offense and players. I think KC does make a reasonable offer to Kyle, in the 3-year range. Just a guess.

"I can't tell you if he..."
That tells me all I need to know. That first slip tells me he’s not on the list. Regardless of what they say later. Not that realistic Chiefs fans haven’t already accepted that KCQB#7 will be our starter once again next season.
WHAT THE HELL DO THEY SEE IN THIS GUY?!?!?

If it was unclear, looking at the quote from the interview, the first thing he says is “I can’t tell you if he (Orton, is on the list)…”, which is telling. It’s a slip, but it’s telling. KCQB#7, Old Happy Feet himself, will be our starting QB for the next year, maybe two.
So like Scott said yesterday, better give him the best possible Oline so the RB’s can run and he’ll have time to try to make a few reads, rather than throwing check downs.

This would be a good time to make the switch to Orton
It’s not like we have a lot of momentum going forward when it comes to Cassel’s E-P experience. An OC can be hired whose offensive philosophy meshes well with Orton’s skillset. That is assuming Pioli isn’t completely set on the E-P.
He'll be overpaid somewhere. The Chiefs do a lot of things... overpay will never be one of them.
On second though, the Chiefs don’t do much of nothing. But they still won’t overpay.

Cassel is light years better than Croyle, Huard, and Thigpen….granted thats not saying much…We won’t over pay for a backup QB when we have already overpaid for one. Flynn won’t be the next Rodgers….

Oh did he?
Did he get us to a playoff game?
It wasn’t Jamaal Charles, Dwayne Bowe, and the defense? It was Matt Cassel. Just like Dilfer took the Ravens to the Super Bowl.

He did...
They all helped but do you think Croyle would have gotten us there? Did you see the Chargers game with Croyle in it that year?

Matt Flynn will want starter money
and a multi-year deal. For a guy with two career starts. Just say no.
It is time to anoint the Stanzi. He is The One.

Many feel like the QB controversy in Cleveland was the source of Crennel's undoing there
I imagine he’d like to avoid that kind of situation again…
this just means we get another year of Cassel
IMO Pioli is too conservative to trade up for RG3 which means he’ll do the unsexy thing if he goes for a QB at all, and take a guy like Ryan Tannehill in the second or third round and let him sit behind Cassel and Stanzi. No point in fantasizing about a super star QB… EVER

Pioli already said he would trade up
Which means he wont, he also talked about drafting O line, so I’ve rulled that out of the first round too.

If we don't keep Orton
Than it better mean we are trading up to get RG3. If we roll with Cassel into next season, I’m going to toss some shit.

better put on your latex gloves
Very disappointed in our Mr Pioli at the press conference.

^^^ what he said
everyone may as well prepare themselves cause Cassel will more then likely be our starter going into next season
I fear you are correct
all signs point to it.

I just hope
that after a full season and now a full offseason of workouts that maybe Stanzi will show some major improvement and go into next season as the backup or maybe even compete in preseason for the starting job, probably just wishful thinking though
Well I think we might take someone like Nick Foles around the 4th round
prot typical size weight for a QB, who knows.

I'm up for that.
If Gabbert can play decent with a terrible offense other than MJD, Stanzi will definitely haev success with the Chief’s (healthy) offense. Which means we need O linemen and TEs.
There were a lot of rookie QBs given the starting job from the get-go this season. I don’t see how Stanzi could do any worst seeing how well he did in college at Iowa. Hell, it’s impossible to be worse than Palko!
Max: Two days ago, I saw a vehicle that would haul that tanker. You want to get out of here? You talk to me.
I think we will see
Flynn going to Settle.

agree
or Washington, unless either team is willing to part with a bunch of draft picks to go get RG3, cause we all know Washington isnt afraid to overpay for players
I don't see why people keep sayin this means we will see another year of Cassel
It just looks to me as if Pioli and Crennel are bringing all of the possibilities to our attention.
I think Thomas Jones would have better success in Bodybuilder competitions than he is havin right now in the NFL!

Do they want Orton back? Yep. Will they say much about how much? Nope.
…just in case he goes elsewhere you don’t want to give the impression to Cassel you were trying to replace him.
Good news is, at least I don't see Cassel throwing a tantrum like Cutler did.
That would just be embarrassing.
Foxtrot Alpha November - Sierra Hotel Oscar Tango!
Agreed. Matty Nice is a team player
and has never felt entitled to the starting job. He’ll compete hard for it.

I understand wanting a Franchise QB
However Cassell and Orton have almost identical stats and record as a starter. Fans in Chicago/Denver wanted Orton out as much if not more than we want Cassell out.
He only had a small sampling here, I can’t see how you justify one over the other. When cassell had a run game and a good TE he looked good.
I don’t think Cassell is going to lead us to the promise land but I surely don’t think Orton can either.
I would be shocked if Cassell isn’t the opening day starter next year.
I can agree to an extent...
I think Orton’s biggest advatage over Cassel is his ability to sell the PA pass. I also saw him calling out blitzs something I rarely see Cassel do. I think with Charles in the back field his PA selling ability could put this team over the top.

Really? Do you have eyes?
Everybody that watches games can see the HUGE difference in cassell and orton!
I couldnt see much difference in palko and cassell thats how bad cassell really is!
Orton looked like a stud after seeing cassell play so long here.
we all can find stats but, we all have eyes also and eyes dont lie.

Why do you keep pointing out similar stats, but
you keep ignoring the widely divergent situations? While Cassel and Orton were fashioning their similar stats, Cassel was doing it with the #1 running game in the league, while Orton was doing it with virtually NO running game. I would say that those similar stats indicate a clear superiority of Orton over Cassel.
I love my wife.
I don't know how many of you guys remember Elvi Grbac...
He was the starting chiefs QB back about twenty years ago and his back up then was Rich Gannon. Elvis got hurt in a game and old Marty ( Schottenheimer) was the coach then, well he put in Gannon and he did a better job then Grbac and won the games he started. Well, we made the playoff riding a hot streak with Gannon. but since alot of coaches feel if a starting player gets hurt that he should not lose his starting job. All the chiefs fans back then wanted Gannon to get the QB job but old Marty stuck buy his guns and said when healthy, Grbac will be the starter. Needle to say Grbac got his starting job back and we lost the game. My point is, if you got a guy under center and your team starts playing better, why stop the flow? Because of loyalty? Because it’s not fair to replace an injured starter? The bottom line are the WINS. And I believe in my heart if we would of stayed with Gannon, we would have won. Now fast foward to 2011..Does this sound familar anyone?
Koolta: A die hard chiefs fan
Kool TA i remember that and it does
Gannon went on to Oakland taking them to Super Bowl. Grabac left us for Ravens only to take big contract suck then he retired when he couldn’t live up to expectations he quit on Baltimore. Cassel is decent but he just not developed enough to be starting in this league. Orton makes better throw, better decision maker, and has better feel for the game.
