Go Matt Cassel 2012!
Scott Pioli and Romeo Crennel have made it clear in recent days that Matt Cassel will be the starting QB in 2012. I can't say that gets me very excited. Another year of 90 yard passing games, holding on to the ball too long, and freaking out in the pocket. Can someone please tell me what Matt Cassel does better than Kyle Orton? Would the Chiefs have won against Green Bay with Cassel starting? Maybe but, not likely. I know Cassel is under contract and Pioli will never admit a mistake. But, what does the team lose by bring in competition? We have the financial flexibility to sign a Kyle Orton to be the back up. The second part of this post is centered around Tim Tebow. I have to say every time the guy wins I like him a little more. Good role model, leader by example, and wins football games. Let me just say I have been a fan of the guy since his Florida days. The day I turned on Sportscenter and heard Tebow give the promise speech I instantly liked the guy. Then, when he won the National Championship that year that was the icing on the cake. You maybe asking where the are you going with this. Half the fans or more in America think Tim Tebow is a horrible QB. Well I hate to say it but, when was the last time Kansas City had a QB win a playoff game, throw for 300 yards, 2 Td's, and have a QB rating above 125? My guess is never but, I could be wrong. So if you had the choice would you pick Kyle Orton, Matt Cassel, or Tim Tebow to be the starting QB in 2012?

You actually
Believe what they are saying in the media???? Fact is nobody has a clue what will happen. I see this completely differently, they have not once said MATT IS OUR QB, not once. Their answer has been he is under contract and he has won for us in the past, that is by no means a resounding yes Matt is the starter next year. Pioli isnt going to tip his hand with the draft and free agency 3 months away.
Pioli went on and on about how he thought KCQB#7 is a good QB

While this is true...
He NEVER stated that Matt was our starting QB going forward.
Go Chiefs!!!!
i think what that implies
is that Orton would have to compete/beat out Matt to be the starter. Kyle could most likely get more $ and have a better chance to start else where, IMO.

RAC was on Sirius today with Schein and Gannon and said exactly that Matt Cassel is our starter. That he took us to the playoffs before, and hopes he can do it again. Doesn’t excite me at all, just putting the facts out there.

It has been a

you cannot talk about Tebow here, it's illegal by NFL contract law
he is already under contract to another team (Denver Broncos) and even a discussion about him can be construed as “tampering” which would cost the Chiefs at least one draft pick …

If Romeo want's to be....
the next ex.Chief’s next head coach he should by all means make Matt the starting QB from now on. However if he would like to stick around for a while I suggest he sign Orton right away.

I think we can still win the division with Cassel as QB
but it would be easier with Orton.

In other words , we should build a team around Cassel that will win in spite of Matt Cassel at QB?

by James Michael Simpson on Jan 12, 2012 2:22 PM CST reply actions
My take is Cassel is better than credited, and I think, believe it or not, that his upside
is higher than Orton’s. That being said, not sure if the team is behind Matt any more. Also, I kinda think Haley messed him up confidence wise. So it would be good to have a veteran to compete for the job, Stanzi too. Will it be Orton? Maybe, maybe not, but may the best man win. We have bigger problems than at QB on the O-line in my estimation and the QB class next year is looking pretty damn good, so a little patience. Yeah, I know it’s been 4 decades since our last Super Bowl and we all want the top of the line QB, but they are few and far between. At least Pioli came to town and brung somebody to be the QB. If you think back a few years when Cassel first got here he looked pretty damn good and the guys around him sucked. The team is better now than in a long time and I’m not ready to throw in the towel on Matt just yet. But he needs real competiiton and then he needs to win the job.
I agree with everything but..
the fact that Cassel has more upside than Orton. You made some great points about Haley killing Matt’s confidence and the city getting behind the Cassel trade. The man needs to earn the job in the offseason. Orton vs Cassel may the best man win!

I have always credited Cassel for being able to lead the 16-0 Patriots to an 11 win season.
In truth a 10-6 for Chiefs was actually a greater accomplishment. That said, we need a QB who can take a team on his shoulders and be the difference in 2 or 3 games a year. That is a small but very important difference between a very good QB and the QB we need in KC.
"You talkin' to me? You TALKIN' to me ?" - Travis Bickle
he beat 10 non playoff teams...
The best thing cassel did last year was not turn the ball over….thats it….in fact, his turnovers came against the better teams at the worst times…..anytime he played a good playoff caliber team he has gotten his ass kicked…..look it up….in 3 seasons, he beat ONE TEAM with a winning record..Pittsburgh in 09…i think they were 6-4 when we played them, they ended the season 9-7 and missed the playoffs…
Clark Hunt and Scott Pioli need to IMPRESS me in 2012....No Settling this year Chiefs Fans!!
Exactly the reason that I prefer we try and keep Orton and cut ties with Cassel.
Assuming cost would be similar.

Really
So when Orton moved the ball up and down the field on the Super Bowl Champion Packers, he proved he’s not a guy that can take you somewhere? I guess the fact that he controlled time of posession, which kept their offense off the field means nothing? I know you don’t like Orton, but if we gave up the picks it would take to get Luck or RG3 what kind of line do they have blocking for them? I bet Orton can perform better than either one with an improved line and maybe a stud TE.
you aren't drinking tonite are you?
The packers have the 31st ranked defense. Teams have moved the ball on them all year. How come no one ever mentions our defense in that game? That is who really played outstanding that day. As far as the line goes, we need a guard and a right tackle. Not exactly impossible , to find those positions in other ways besides the draft. We do have how many millions of dollars of cap room again?

Only in yards allowed. You like using really skewed stats a lot.
In points allowed, however, they rank 19th.
With an offense as potent as Green Bay’s, they score. Quickly. And often. That puts the ball right back in the opponent’s hands. The Packers don’t worry about a ball control / Time of Possession offense. They just overwhelm you with points. Like the Saints. And the Patriots.
So yes, their D is going to give up yards. But they’re not giving up tons of points. So no, they don’t have a terrible defense. Those teams all have pretty average / competent defenses that are asked to hold a lead almost all the time. That means opponents are going to be passing a lot and trying to make up ground quick. So of course they’re going to give up yards.
C’mon now. Think things through a bit.
Foxtrot Alpha November - Sierra Hotel Oscar Tango!
31st in yards allowed
and 19th in points allowed is hardly an average defense.
They are a below average defense, who have a high-powered offense in front of them so they don’t look as bad.
Pretty much the exact opposite of what the 49ers are doing.
Eh, 16th most points allowed is exactly middle of the pack out of 32 teams.
So 19th in points allowed is pretty average.
Especially since most opponents are playing from behind and having to keep the pedal down just to try to stay in the game.
Foxtrot Alpha November - Sierra Hotel Oscar Tango!
Have to agree
I would say 19 is pretty average and if not what would be considered average? 16 and everything else is either above or below heh

brow beating people?
This is coming from a guy who just ripped a dude for not having a long enough fan post. And now you are skewing stats, 19 is not average. That is 3 spots out of being average . Nevertheless, how is my point negated? The chiefs moved the ball on the 31st ranked defense in total yards. And didn’t score on the 19th ranked defense in points given up. The defense did shut down that GB offense and sadly that is being overlooked by Ortons solid , but far from elite day he had

You like to speak in absolutes.
We probably don’t have a QB on the roster who can win us a super bowl barring a huge stroke of luck.
Maybe Stanzi could wow us. I wouldn’t bet the deed to my house on it, though.
Maybe Cassel will find some huge turnaround in performance without Haley. I doubt it. But if that’s who we go into the 2012 season with, I guess I’ll hope for the best. Still won’t have a lot of expectations if that’s the case though.
Orton showed the mechanics that Cassel lacks. The offense was much more fluid with him in there just in three games. Over the course of a season (or several) – will his decision making ability be worse than Cassel’s? Maybe. Is making faster, but not always good, reads with the ability to throw much better really a big upgrade over what we’ve had? That’s what you get in Orton. It may be an upgrade. May not be.
It’s awfully presumptuous to just state things that are opinion, as fact. When you stop and honestly consider other opinions presented to you as viable, you can learn something. AP has changed a lot of my football related views over the last couple of years. You should try it.

3 team in 7 years is BS
That is such a cheap point to make. He was traded to Devnver because Denver was GIVING AWAY a francise QB that was disgruntaled. Orton was not traded because he was horrible or couldnt lead or make throws or read the deffense he was traded because there are maybe 3 or 4 teams in the league that would not trade thier starting QB for Custler given the chance. And Denver is Denver, hell just the fact that they traded Custler to Chicago makes the same point for the great decisions coming out of Denver on QBs sense horse face

I don't know about that my friend, it just seems that I see a bunch of censorship. Not
just here, but in life, too. Folks wanting to control others, kinda how the national socialism party started. Freedom and Liberty is the really good things about what this country stands for, even if they are being attacked incessantly from several different avenues. Part of my problem here is I am unaware, and most likely don’t really care, as who has censorship outside of the Thormans. I guess they could post the censors and monitors on the homepage so we know who is who and pay the appropriate attention to when someone decides to censor the happenings around here.
Eh, not at all the point. Missed entirely really.
Suggesting that someone posting a couple of off the cuff, unresearched random thoughts as a fanshot instead of a fanpost is not remotely censorship. Saying he shouldn’t post them at all and demanding it be removed would be asking for censorship.
You’re going way overboard when you start crying ‘OMG CENSORSHIP!’
I’m just asking someone consider using the fanpost spots for posts that actually bring up new ideas, contain well researched data and well written and well thought out presentations. And use fanshots for quick “hey here’s what I think. how bout you?” chat topics.
Not even remotely what you’re suggesting.
Foxtrot Alpha November - Sierra Hotel Oscar Tango!
You just posted a fan post asking people to consider the idea of moving Albert to C instead of G or RT
That’s one that hasn’t been discussed at great length around here.
There are dozens of discussions going on at any given moment about Orton or Cassel, Orton vs Cassel. Sign Orton and trade Cassel. Cut Cassel and mow Orton’s lawn. Kyle Cassel’s Ortonmatt. Etc, etc, etc.
And Tim Tebow is the most talked about athlete on the planet right now.
Kind of a noticeable difference.
But again, I’m just mean and overly demanding. Nobody should really consider anything I have to say.
Ever.
Foxtrot Alpha November - Sierra Hotel Oscar Tango!
What can I say, just trying to inject a little levity around here. Such serious
opinions we have, mostly based on others opinions when it comes to drafting an FA. Trying not to take myself to damn seriously, ya know? By the way I quit the caffiene about halfway to noon.
There is no such thing as an original idea.
But it doesn’t mean people can’t build on existing thoughts and opinions.
What TRS is asking for is simple courtesy. If your post is a quick, “Hey what do you guys think of this random topic”, then make it a chat fanshot. It’s short, to the point and lives with the other fanshots in fanshotland.
If what you are posting is an actual article that has research, is well thought out, and sticks to a topic, then it can live in Fanpostland.
The problem with posting a fanshot as a fanpost is that it will shove a legit, well thought out, most times in-depth post out of the list where someone may miss it.
I personally would rather read a well thought out fan post that I don’t even come close to agreeing with than another fanshot giving Tebow a reach around. Just my opinion, of course.
Civility and consideration are not censorship.
Somewhere along the line the term “politically correct” replaced the term “politeness” so it’s now seen as a negative thing. These days everyone thinks they have a right to be rude, obnoxious, even slanderous.

Question?
Who is going to get more votes Tebow or Cassel?
by James Michael Simpson on Jan 12, 2012 2:52 PM CST reply actions
Crennel wrote the book on how to beat Tebow.
Unfortunately, the Steelers didn’t read it. RAC does a great job of taking something away and making you beat the defense one way. Tebow is great at rolling left and finding gaps by side stepping the on coming rush. He can make a throw inside of the pocket, but he would prefer not to. It’s not his strong point and never will be. This does not make him incapable of doings so or improving. It will just never be his go-to game.
The Chiefs defense contained Tebow in the pocket all day without giving him running lanes. This only works with the D-lineman staying true to the two gap system, even if it means not getting upfield rushing the passer. He was willing to let the Broncos beat us with their running backs. He was not willing to let Tebow beat us rolling out of the pocket or taking advantage of running lanes created by rushing upfield. Combine that with a secondary that doesn’t let anything behind them, and you give yourself a respectable chance. A 6 of 22 for 60 yards, an int, and fumble kind of chance.

that Cassel, Palko, and Orton had. I believe Orton got sacked what, maybe twice at the most in three games? Shows he has better feel in the pocket.
Freaking dumb to not bring in someone else to challenge Cassel.
Any other Qb that had his production would have been yanked. He was miserable. We couldn’t get first downs, couldn’t move the ball. He was a huge reason we scored the lowest number of points in Chiefs’ franchise history. Just ridiculous to not try something else.

Kyle Orton has become the crush of many fans based on his performance against the undefeated Packers, not to discount that, and he’s shown what he’s capable of in the starting QB role. But his overall body of work since coming into the NFL in 2005 doesn’t impress me a whole lot more than Cassel, just that he brings a different edge in areas we are lacking. I know, probably not a popular opinion and, yes, he has better pocket presence and proved is more aware of his choices on the field. I’m not overlooking that. He provided a late season spark against the Packers, looked good against the Raiders and looked so-so against the Broncos.
To add a bit of perspective, look at the evidence presented to you. In 7 seasons how many times did Orton take his team to the playoffs? Once. You could make a case that he helped take the Bears to the playoffs his rookie year (2005) but was benched in the regular season for Rex Grossman and didn’t take a single snap in the postseason. When has he taken a team to the postseason since ? Cassel nearly made the playoffs in 2008 with 11 wins and missed the postseason due to double tiebreaker technicality but took the Chiefs to the postseason in 2010 (yes we all know he flopped). But twice out of 4 seasons as a starter was his team playoff contenders. Orton helped his team to the playoffs once as a starter (as rookie before being benched; he hasn’t stepped it up through the long haul since to take his team to the postseason). There are factors to consider in each case for the success of both players which brings up ONE SIMILARITY between the two – they’re both QBs who require the right personnel to coach them to the best of their particular skill level.
Therefore, the difference is that this Chiefs team is built for Cassel and they are carefully seeking out the right personnel to put around him to help him succeed the way Charlie Weiss did. Orton is not a favorite amongst the front office – they’ve made that obvious – therefore why would they try and rebuild around him at this point?
Again, I’m not bashing Orton nor am I pro Cassel nor am I providing my opinion of either. I’m merely pointing out the evidence at present, interpreting what it means and providing a rational perspective as to how the front office is looking at the QB situation.
Bottom line, the writing is on the walls and at this point it’s more clear than ever that Cassel is expected to be the starter (not to say things can change in a quick minute in the offseason). But it’s time to move past the thought of bringing change to the QB position and start focusing more on what the Chiefs’ next moves will be to improve our team (an OC who can work with Cassel, a stronger O line, an additional pass rusher, a pass catching TE – Moeaki could use a versatile counterpart, etc). Am I off base in what I am interpreting here? Maybe this should have been a separate post ha ha.
I fell asleep shortly after....

funny
I keep falling asleep at the multiple posts of everyone’s narrow reasons as to why Kyle Orton makes us great. Is he a better QB than Cassel? He has a slight edge. Does he fit the Chiefs long term? Not really. Does he make us a SB contender? I haven’t seen anything to show me that. That’s my point.

that came off bitter
I’m partially being sarcastic but seriously too many one line comments in support of Orton. Not an Orton hater but what does he give us specifically that truly brings “greatness” to KC?

Cassel / Orton
Everybody here needs to relax and take a deep breath. Anyone who thinks Cassel is the man for the job is wrong. Anyone who thinks Orton is the man is also wrong. Matt Cassel has proven to be a serviceable QB.. He doesn’t read defenses very well nor does he look off his recievers very well and it shows in his numbers. With KC he has never had a QB rating higher than 93 for a season, his completion % has never broken 60 for a season. His best year wih KC was 2010.. 58% CP, 93 rating 3116 yds passing.. As I said, serviceable at best. He will NOT get this team to a SB unless he has an offense loaded with talent as he had in NE and they didn’t make the playoffs in 08’.. Kyle Orton’s numbers aren’t even as good as Cassel’s career wise however he has the intangibles that make him a better QB than Cassel. He has a stronger arm, scans the field better, reads defenses better. His numbers in Denver weren’t bad at all. His play in the last three games this year were better than 90% of Matt Cassels games since being with the Chiefs. Just observing the play between these two QB’s tells you that Orton looks and plays more like a QB than Cassel does. Orton is fluid, Cassel is not. If it were up to me I would keep them both for this coming year. Let the best man win the starting job, dump palko and take a real close look at Stanzi. This kid has alot of promise and I would start getting him more involved.
