That’s who you re-sign, in that order of priority. The rest……who cares? Gordon, Belcher, Gilberry, Battle, Gregg maybe if you can’t find better replacements.

Amon Gordon was pretty stout

He’d certainly be worth keeping around in the D-Line rotation.

I agree. He was like last year's version of Shaun Smith, minus the mouth

I hope we can find another guy like that this year as well. (and obviously resign Gordon)

He shouldn't have put on that weight.

It didn’t help him win a starting job thanks to the emergence of TJax and Bailey, and it definitely made him a less effective pass rushing specialist.

He rolled the dice and lost big on that one.

T-Jax, Dorsey, Gregg, and Bailey were all better than him last year.

I agree, BUT

I do agree – he was stout. BUT, you keep him motivated by only giving him a 1yr contract. Make him prove this wasn’t a fluke.
Also, we still don’t know what we have in Gerrel Powe (sp??)… we may not ‘need’ the depth he provides.

Please quit telling me Derrick Johnson is a great LB. He's a great athlete, yes. Be he CANNOT play the run to save his life. Sorry. End of story. Bad feet, and among the worst angles of pursuit out there. He's a CB trapped in a LB body.

Agreed...

As long as he can accept a backup roll. That is sometimes easier for guys going to a new team, than staying with the same team and being demoted.

He’ll also need to accept a backup’s contract.

I'm curious to see

what Maneri could do with more playing time. Admittedly, I was upset when we claimed a former TE with limited playing time and came from the Patriots, but the guy really impressed me when he got on the field. I felt he played exceptionally well in the Steelers game with what he asked to do— playing a bit of RT, TE, a weird slot-like position and in the backfield in shotgun formations. That’s an unusual amount of versatility for an extra lineman.

Your eyes tell you more than any statistics can.

by kc_radrh8r on Jan 11, 2012 3:09 PM CST up reply actions

Maneri is an end of the roster guy.

A guy we like b/c he caught a couple passes.

He’s the guy that should’ve been cut when we let Gaither go. I’m ok if he makes the roster as the last OT, and yeah, I guess he gives you a little versatility, but I hope he is never counted on for more than that.

by kcsno56 on Jan 11, 2012 3:16 PM CST up reply actions

by tomahawk44 on Jan 11, 2012 11:09 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

I guess I don't see what Gilberry brings to the table that makes us need him.

He was outplayed by a rook last year and is just terrible against the run.

I’d honestly rather have T-Jax in there on obvious passing downs. He’s not as good a pass rusher, but it’s like this…

Gilberry > T-Jax rushing the passer, and
T-Jax >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Gilberry against the run and eating double teams

Yeah Gilberry could be a guy who does well when he is singled like with Dorsey next to him

But with the extra attention paid to him this year, it could have hurt.

The added weight was likely the thing though, didn’t look as explosive out there

by BAMFSpecialOps on Jan 12, 2012 6:36 AM CST up reply actions

As much as I'd hate to see him go, I wouldn't be surprised to see Wally walk.

I think they’re just looking for a guy who is a tad bigger like bailey who can sub in on two gapping plays when need be. The DE’s and OLB’s seem to really run this scheme up front for us. I used to be on the “NT at any cost!” bandwagon, but honestly after seeing how much success we’ve been having in our sub sets, and how much time we’re actually in it, we may honestly be ok there for the moment if we can get Gordon back for depth and get Powe playing on game days. I wouldn’t even mind seeing another DE drafted this year just to keep developing them. Those guys and our OLBs are really our 3 down players, moving inside on pass downs and staying outside on run downs. Gotta stack the cupboard.

I also want to see us get very serious about DB depth this year. I know it’s one of our strongest suits, but especially at safety we’re really thin. So much of the NFL passing game takes it’s cues from the safety these days. We need guys who will not be exploited every time they step onto the field like sabby. The safety play this year, just like it did during the Mike Brown era, created a stupid amount of big plays for opposing O’s last year. That’s gotta stop.

My rankings:

Top Priorities:

1. CB Brandon Carr (UFA)
2. WR Dwayne Bowe (UFA)
3. QB Kyle Orton (UFA)
4. FB Le’Ron McClain (UFA)

Should re-sign, but do not overpay:

1. LB Jovan Belcher (RFA)
2. TE Leonard Pope (UFA)
3. DL Amon Gordon (UFA)
4. DE Wallace Gilberry (UFA)
5. RB Jackie Battle (UFA)
6. OT Barry Richardson (UFA)
7. TE Jake O’Connell (RFA)
8. DB Travis Daniels (UFA)

Not at all a priority, but bring them back if you want:

1. S Reshard Langford (ERFA)
2. WR Jerheme Urban (UFA)
3. OT Ryan O’Callaghan (UFA)

Do not bring back under any circumstances:

1. QB Tyler Palko (ERFA)
2. S Sabby Piscitelli (UFA)

Should probably retire (but let them go even if they don’t):

1. TE Anthony Becht (UFA)
2. DL Kelly Gregg (UFA)
3. RB Thomas Jones (UFA)
4. S Jon McGraw (UFA)
5. C Casey Wiegmann (UFA)

McGraw should retire?

I think this year proved just how important he is as a depth player. At 32 and still able to be an effective depth guy and veteran leader there’s no reason to cut him or for him to retire.

"Give them nothing! But take from them everything!"

by GenericBrand on Jan 11, 2012 11:31 AM CST up reply actions

Eh, that's fair.

Bump him up to “Bring back if you want,” then. I don’t have any real objection to that. I’m fine with McGraw as a special teamer and a team leader. But we need better depth at safety. McGraw should not be the top back-up next year.

I also stuck him in there because I thought he was pondering retirement last year. I could be wrong about that, though. Either way, he’s slow as hell and not getting any younger.

by MtHammer on Jan 11, 2012 11:35 AM CST up reply actions

He's slow in pass coverage, I'll agree.

He’s still a really good player against the run though and has good instincts. He should definitely not be the top depth player but the last safety on the roster before Langford and Washington. Also would be great to draft a mid round safety that can play the role he plays so that he can learn from McGraw before he retires.

by GenericBrand on Jan 11, 2012 11:39 AM CST up reply actions

I can agree with just about everything...

Though if Kelly Greeg and Jon McGraw thought that they had it in them to play one more year I’d put them in the not at all a priority, but bring them back if you want list.

by ravenhawk on Jan 11, 2012 11:32 AM CST up reply actions   1 recs

That's legit. I do think Gregg will probably retire.

But if he doesn’t, he was still pretty mediocre at NT this year. Being another year older isn’t going to help him any. I won’t be furious if the Chiefs bring him back as depth or anything, but under no circumstances should he be plans A, B, and C for starting nose tackle like he was this year.

See above for my further thoughts on McGraw.

That should have been a big if...

I think that Gregg is probably done and will retire… The only reason why I would want him around is to mentor Powe another year. I’m not sure how far Powe has made it, but hopefully with a full offseason we will see lots of Power coming from him!

Why are people so quick to dump BRich.

Sure he’s not much of a starting RT but as a backup he’s immediately one of the better depth swing tackles in the league. Let’s not pull another Wade Smith.

by GenericBrand on Jan 11, 2012 11:30 AM CST reply actions   1 recs

I agree, I would like to see him at guard

I think it would help with his jittery false start habit. I think he is scared of getting beat on the outside so he always jumps the gun. I think if he was inside at guard he would settle down more and maybe he would get angry again and start hitting coaches and beating up defences. I miss that B Rich.

by Grayt1 on Jan 11, 2012 11:54 AM CST up reply actions

Bingo.

Smith actually went on to be a pretty solid player with Houston, also. I don’t think Barry is quite as good, but I see no reason to get rid of a player like him. Youth + Depth + some experience. I’ll take that in a backup ANY day.

by Chris Sembower on Jan 11, 2012 11:40 AM CST up reply actions

Smith has been solid in Houston

but they overpaid for him. Richardson might be worth bringing back for depth as a backup swing tackle, but I sure as hell wouldn’t give him starter money.

But I wasn’t opposed to carrying both on the active roster this year and I won’t be opposed to it (assuming Bannon develops) next year. They really aren’t the same player. Bannon is more of a pass catching FB/TE and McClain is more of a bruising (though well-rounded) FB/HB.

I actually kind of like the idea of putting in Bannon as the FB and McClain as the HB in short yardage situations.

I would like Gordon, Belcher, and Gilberry back as well, they wouldn’t be expensive. Gordon was solid, Gilberry has a pass rush threat, and Belcher is a good run stopper and still a young player who can improve, I think he gets a bad rep because he plays next to DJ who is excellent.

Calais Campbell would be a good free agent pickup for us

A 3-4 DE from the cardinals that can generate pressure and also even blocked a few important fieldgoal kicks this past season. Signing him could allow us to trade Dorsey to a 4-3 team which would honestly be a more better fit for him.

- Tag Bowe (listen to offers) or give him one year to prove he deserves a big contract (and see how Baldwin progresses in year 2)
- Sign Carr
- Sign Orton (trade Cassel and draft a mid round QB)
- Sign McClain to a 2-3 year deal (sounds like he likes it in KC)
- Trade Dorsey
- And the rest… whatever
- Have a good draft (Oline, NT, depth at RB, TE, Secondary, and maybe ILB)
- Profit

Langford

Don’t understand why people hate on him so much. Is he a good S? No. But that’s just his position listing. He’s a Special Teams player, and has been a pretty good one for us. Losing him hurts our Special Teams which hurts us in the field position game. Until we show we can drive down the field at will, guys like Langford are very important.

Pretty good list

I think Gregg goes into the noway as Gordon can play NT and Powe needs to play. I would sign BR just for depth. May not be a better option at swing OT…..and Sabby showed me something against Denver. The one thing he has is speed. If Romeo and Thomas can work on his angles….he could be a nice player to cover the TE. I’d keep him as our 4th safety….McGraw has the technique, but is slow and injury prone.

The bottom thrid of the roster will turn over with draft picks and FA….so I see about 15 roster moves this year.

Nope.

He can exit stage left.

Gordon and Belcher

are important for depth. I am hoping Siler can win that second ILB spot, but a team lacking depth shouldnt let go of a starter that has been mostly solid. Bowe and Carr without thought

Gotta re sign Belch unless they have a good replacement plan.

The rest I can mostly agree with though.

I'm not sure Dorsey is still on the team at the beginning of 2012 season.

That’s why I didn’t include him. Gordon can do that job.

Pioli's got work to do.

Need to sign Carr, Bowe, McClain, Belcher, Gilberry and/or Gordon for sure.

I’d like to see Battle, Orton and Gregg back, but they are secondary, IMO.

The rest are just roster fodder.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a third round tender on Belcher.

Just so we can see if anyone is willing to pick it up

Pioli needs to get Carr or Bowe re-signed... then start figuring out how to replace the other.

We're not going to pay them more than they are worth to us.

Unfortunately, someone else will. Particularly Carr. Wait and see. We’ll get one of them signed, probably not the one we want.

I'm not saying you are wrong and one walks

I’m saying with where this team is at in payroll and cap space there is no excuse not to sign both.

It would take offers that make either paid as top 10 players at their positions, and I don’t think that will happen.

Top 15 or 20? Maybe, but KC should be willing to pay that.

I don’t know why Carr wouldn’t be worth that to us. We don’t use our CB’s as #1 and #2, we are right side and left side, and Carr is extremely valuable.

agree here

Carr is extremely vital to a defense with Tim Tebow in the division. He allows us to successfully press cover the first two options. We have so much cap space not bringing back two vital players to your team is just inexcusable and a huge failure by Pioli

re: good posts... here's mine

What should we do?
1. CB Brandon Carr… there’s no justifiable reason to mess with this team’s defensive chemistry… he was arguably better than Flowers this year.
2. franchise and possibly trade WR Dwayne Bowe… He won’t be here after next year anyways so let’s get something for him while we can (Same thinking went into Jared Allen trade)… Some teams will give up too much for him. I know the Cleveland media talk him up alot because that’s where I live but his crucial drops are the nail in the coffin for me. He still is one the best blocking WRs in the league, however, which goes real well with JC when he comes back.
3. Resign QB Kyle Orton and let him and Stanzi compete next year. Cassel should be traded if possible or kept as the second/third QB if we have to. I’d consider waiving him if we could find a legitimate third QB. Orton’s not really a great starter, either but he’s head and shoulders above Cassel. It’s depressing that we won’t be able to draft Andrew Luck.
4. Resign or let FB Le’Ron McClain walk. He wasn’t very productive for us but he was a leader. I would think some cheaper youth might be served here. He is a banger which we will be lacking once TJ retires or isn’t resigned (please God don’t let Chiefs resign him!)
5. resign Jovan Belcher, which should be easy considering he’s an RFA. He has improved quite a bit and is a good run defender. DO NOT LET THIS GUY GO until somebody clearly beats him out. We need him for depth at least and I don’t honestly see anyone we currently have beating him out.
2. Keep TE Leonard Pope for depth and because Moeaki is injury-prone.
3. DL Amon Gordon… I’d keep him for depth and I’d bring back Shaun Smith, too, if he’s free again.
4. DE Wallace Gilberry’s time is up. Very underwhelming year. Better served by letting younger guys play.
5. RB Jackie Battle… he can stay or go, doesn’t really matter but he is a good special teams player.
6. OT Barry Richardson should not be starting in the NFL, much like Matt Cassel. Depth only. He should’ve been fired before Gaither for sure.
7. TE Jake O’Connell… who cares really? At least he’s still youngish and could devlop but he mostly looks like crap so far.
8. DB Travis Daniels semmed pretty serviceable for depth to me.
9. S Reshard Langford seemed serviceable at times for depth.
10. WR Jerheme Urban’s time is up. Need an upgrade here. He’s a waste of a roster spot. Older and never that good to begin with.
11. OT Ryan O’Callaghan… I really don’t care whether they keep this guy… another Patriots fourth-stringer the Chiefs brought in in desperation.
12. QB Tyler Palko… This is one area where Chiefs fans are actually unanimous and I don’t think I even need to write it here.
13. S Sabby Piscitelli seemed to improve so I’d keep him for depth.
14. TE Anthony Becht can go… Ridiculously past-his-prime player who is slow… This was a desperation pick-up.
15. DL Kelly Gregg… If they can get another year out of him, I’d say do it. Defense played pretty well with him manning a key spot and I’m not sure if Powe is ready for prime-time yet.
16. RB Thomas Jones should retire and if not he should be fired.
17. S Jon McGraw … goodbye… experience can only buy you so much at his age.
18. C Casey Wiegmann… Ciao, man, it’s been a nice career. Time for youth to step up and play. We need to draft a good center or OG or both depending on what position Hudson is playing next year.

Our biggest issues are QB and RT by far. Pioli screwed the pooch by not addressing BRichardson last year, his biggest faux pas so far excluding the Matt Cassel giveaway (which I seem to remember the much-hated Whitlock lampooning quite a bit). Our QB options for the offseason appear to be dismal so we may be stuck with Cassel on the roster. If that is the case, then we desperately need Orton to resign. I’d be interested in taking a look at Matt Moore if he came loose from Miami as well and if Manning becomes availabel somehow, there’s no reason we shouldn’t make a strong play for him. He would be the best solution to our problems if healthy and there’s no way Pioli would ignore right tackle with him in the fold. I know it seems like a pipe dream but so did Joe Montana for us. With Manning and JC healthy, there would be no reason we couldn’t make a Superbowl or two. Our D is obviously leaps and bounds above Indy’s and our WRs aren’t slouched and you can bet Manning would whip them into shape real quick and not put up with the drops. Look at a player like Reggie Wayne with and without Manning. A good QB makes a HUGE difference! If we make this move, then Orton becomes moot because we won’t need him and he won’t want to be here. The odds of him resigning are probably low in the first place because he doesn’t want to steal Cassel’s job like his job was stolen in Denver.

Oh, last but not least, we should trade Dorsey to a 4-3 team and we could use him as part of package to get Manning if need be.
