Todd Haley Visiting The New York Jets

Photo

The Kansas City Chiefs fired Todd Haley on December 13th and we haven't heard much from him since then. He issued a statement after he was let go, appeared on ESPN's Audibles show and also did a spot on Yahoo! Sports Radio earlier this week.

We've been wondering where he'll end up and the most talked about spot for him is the Arizona Cardinals. Reports say there's some interest between the two but that's it -- just some interest. No contract offers or anything like that (yet) from Arizona.

And now ESPN's Adam Schefter has some legit news on Haley -- he's visiting the New York Jets. Schefter reports Haley is visiting New York today and the Jets could (not will -- could) pair him with Tony Sparano as the offensive coordinator and Haley as the assistant head coach, replacing Brian Schottenheimer.

Haley, of course, was in New York back in the late '90s when Bill Parcells was there.

Thoughts on Haley potentially landing in New York?

Or he needs players that make him look good

because he has an inability to adjust his “system” to the talent he has. He’s overrated as an OC but from what 610 was saying this morning, Sparano would be OC and he would be an assistant and assistant HC.

That Jets team is just going to implode.

Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.

I doubt it

Ryan, Haley, and Sparano are all good coaches.

Haley + Sparano >>>> Schotty

Nicknames I have coined:

Jamaal Charles = 'Haley's Comet'
Shaun Smith = 'Big Nasty'
Kelly Gregg = 'Old Gregg'

I would say Ryan is a good defensive mind, not sure if he is a good HC with the way their team is going.

Sparano is a good OC but I don’t think Haley is. He was given a system already in place with a HOF QB and a potential HOF WR plus 2 other good WR (Breaston and Boldin). He took over playcalling mid-season after Whisenhunt had everything in place. Then he did nothing more than call the plays already made in a system already made. He’s no Norv Turner, Chan Gailey, Charlie Weis, etc. Until he proves it on his own somewhere, he is overrated.

Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.

Hell yeah!

It would only be a matter of time before Haley loses it and bitch slaps Rex Ryan on the sideline. I’m all for it.

Todd and Rex

In a catchweight fight in the octagon on the 50 yard line!

When will the Chiefs be a winning franchise again?

Oh God Yes.

I was very “meh…” about Todd going to the Jets until you brought that up. Now I desperately want it to happen.

You're all over it this morning, Joel

Nothing against Haley, but I’m not sure what teaming both him and Sparano together will do for the team. I can see one or the other, but this seems like a classic case of too many chefs in the soup. Maybe they’re trying to give Rex more free time to run his mouth.

I gotta agree with this...

I think Todd is a good coach. I liked him when he was here, and defended him even until he was fired. Once some stuff started coming up about how he was handling things with Pioli it made sense that it wasn’t just one guy. Those two were at a stalemate with each other. You can’t blame one without blaming the other.
I think with our injuries it was just more than he could handle. Sure his personality is grating on people, but I think he’s a good coach. And I think with the right players he’d be a very good OC. I wish him the best.

Yeah...not sure why all the Haley hate.

It didn’t work out here. So? Life of an NFL coach.

He’ll land on his feet, and do just fine.

My earliest Chiefs memories are watching guys named Dawson, Podolak, Taylor, Thomas, Bell, and Buchanan. So, yeah...I'm kind of an old fart.

I second that one

So? Rex Ryan was fine as the Ravens' DC.

It was only when he became the Jets’ head coach that his mouth became an issue.

When was the last time the Chiefs made it to one of those?

Two and 1993, respectively. How irrelevant are both of those questions to what I just said?

Very.

I didn’t say he was the world’s most god-awful head coach of all time and had no idea what he was doing. I said his mouth is an issue. And it is. He loves writing checks his team can’t cash and giving everyone on the planet bulletin board material to use against them.

You know what? Bill Belichick’s tendency to occasionally tape other teams practices is an issue. Marty Shottenheimer’s seeming inability to win the big one is an issue. Andy Reid’s clock management is an issue. The amount of time Mike Tomlin has to spend filming 20+ new episodes of House, M.D. every year is an issue. Even great coaches have flaws. Now, I happen to think that all those men are better coaches than Rex Ryan, but that’s beside the point.

Here’s the point: Hue Jackson’s mouth was a bit of an issue when he was the guy in Oakland. It wouldn’t be here.

If House needs a ratings boost maybe Tomlin could bring some players along for cameos now that the Steelers are in the offseason.

I think most Chiefs fans still respect Haley, and what he did here, and understand that if he gets his antics under control can be a damn good coach, so I personally at least wish him the best of luck in helping other players realize their talents

by Topchief1 on Jan 11, 2012 8:19 AM CST reply actions

Good idea

He will get those receivers set straight. Watch out Holmes!

by kc_okerix on Jan 11, 2012 8:24 AM CST reply actions

No, SMART move

He and Sparano will bring the type of discipline these pseudostars need. I can just imagine Haley in Santonio’s face right now!

Haley will be a good fit for NY, and He is likely to bring some locker room displine for once.

did and Haley on the sideline… Holmes would have run straight to the locker room screaming like a little bitch!

Mark Sanchez = Matt Cassel in average-at-bestness, so he has some experience.

by JaySoy on Jan 11, 2012 10:19 AM CST reply actions

I'm not sure it's a great fit.

I’d bet Todd Haley thinks it’s a great fit, because he’d be heading to work for Scott Pioli’s complete opposite in Rex Ryan. Unlike with Pioli, Haley would never butt heads with the Jet’s management over his beard or how he dresses or what he says, either on the sideline or to the media.

That being said, one of the biggest mistakes Haley made as coach of the Chiefs was never ending up with a clear-cut situation at offensive coordinator, and his “too many cooks in the kitchen” approach this year with he, Zorn, and Muir was a disaster. I think this proposed arrangement with he, Sparano, and Ryan sounds similarly problematic.

If I were him, I’d look into getting a job with a team that will make him the sole offensive coordinator.

not sure why they think

Haley can co-exist with another coach. Also not sure why you would want two OC…doesn’t make sense

hate to break it to haley haters

but he will get a job somewhere along with his best friend sparano, i dont think rex is the best guy to work with for todd, but it will happen somewhere, and he will succeed. haley is a heck of an offensive coach, say what you want, but ill go with the word of keyshawn johnson and others who actually played for him when he was a position coach
