RAC Press Conference: QB & DC
I know the press conference was discussed (a lot!) yesterday. I just now was able to go back and watch the whole thing. Two things caught my attention:
1) 22:00 - When asked about who was going to be the quarterback, there is laughter, smiles, a Pioli joke, and nearly 15 seconds before RAC starts to answer the question. I like Cassel more than most here, but it sure didn't seem to me that they think "Cassel is the starter" is a foregone conclusion--as some of the doomsday comments might have led someone to believe. In fact, if they had publically seemed any less certain about Cassel I think that would have been a bad thing.
2) 10:45 - When asked about the possibility of being defensive coordinator himself, towards the end of his answer, he said they'll determine if it's best for him to do it or name someone else. Saying "name" only confirms my suspicion that they're almost definitely going to make someone already here the DC. My guess is Gary Gibbs.

What teams do you think will make the strongest bid for Orton?
Our strongest competition will come from teams who need a new starter and arent’ drafting Luck or RGIII. Who are those teams? Some of you know the rest of the league better than I do.
I'd say
Indy, Cleveland, Washington, Miami, KC, Seattle, and possibly even NYJ may be on the market.
You can bet that Luck, Griffin, Manning, and Flynn will fill four of those spots unless Indy keeps both Luck and Manning.

I think Indy is going to keep both based on owner's comments
So…
Indy: Manning/Luck
Cleveland (possibly Wash): RGIII
1. Washington (possibly Cleveland if they don’t draft RGIII): ?
2. Miami: ?
3. Seattle: ???
4. NYJ: possibly
So those 3 or 4 teams with Flynn going to one of them. It only takes 1 but that’s not a huge amount of competition.
I'd think KC would be more attractive to him
than the mess that is the Ratskins. Maybe the Chiefs can trade Cassel to the Rat.

There are a few things that give me hope about our next DC, not even knowing who it is
Romeo been around for a while, and is probably not going to place a complete imbecile at that role. Also, our defense really is more based around solid technique than it is innovative playcalls, or anything like that. Not that RAC doesn’t get creative, and not that our scheme isn’t important. But I just don’t think the playcalling will change THAT much regardless who Romeo asks to be DC.
if rhymes were valiums, i'd be comfortably numb
