Kansas City Chiefs Sign G Darryl Harris
The Kansas City Chiefs last week signed six of their practice squad players to reserve/future contracts and on Tuesday signed G Darryl Harris.
Harris was on the Chiefs practice squad last season (and the year before that). He had quite a bit of time with the team in training camp a couple years ago when Brian Waters was down but hasn't seen any regular season time.
It'll be interesting to see what happens to Harris, and the guards specifically.
The Chiefs have Ryan Lilja and Jon Asamoah at guard while Rodney Hudson backed up last year. Hudson could be moving on to replace Casey Wiegmann as the center of the future so there could be a depth spot open on the interior offensive line.

Cool, got Hudson and Harris who can both play either guard or center.
Should give Pioli a lot of flexibility in the draft.

He's not the world's worst player either, just never seems to be healthy enough to get a shot at a starting job.
Why not try him at LG this spring and summer? He’s athletic and strong, but has never settled on one line position….

is Lilja a free agent?
I wouldn’t be surprised if they let him go and let Hudson stay at OG, where he played well. But that means Chiefs need to drafty an OT and a C. Good centers can usually be got later in the draft.
Nah, they could still draft/sign a guard. If Hudson got hurt, Harris moves over and the backup plays guard.

with the very strong possibility of Weigs retiring (hopefully), i can more easily see them retaining Lilja,
have Hudson start @ C and keep Harris as depth….this gives them a bit more flexibility in the draft.

I don't think so, but I'm not positive ...
Wiegs most likely retires, and I believe Hudson would be better at C position than OG (he’s a bit “light” for OG) … I’d love to see the Chiefs get David DeCastro (OG) in the first round and have the interior of the OLine locked down for years with DeCastro-Hudson-Asamoah

I would be fine with that but I could see Lilja being servicable for another year or two
and my bigger worry is Right Tackle. So it will depend on the T/G available at 11. You can also get pretty good guards with a 2nd or 3rd. Martin with 1st, best guard with 2nd. OLine is set. Although if we can sign one of the good free agents out there that would make things so much nicer.

draft Martin from Stanford in the first round
and then pick up Carl Nicks in free agency. He is a premiere guard in the NFL and still young. The Saints may be able to resign him, but i think with Brees and other being free agents that they may let him go. With those two on the line along with asamoah, albert and hudson we should be solid for years to come.

True
But with having one of the elite running backs in the game, and a lot of QB’s who aren’t very agile i think the Oline is a position group that we can’t afford to have anything but the best. a pretty good right tackle will only get you so far in this league unless you have a mobile QB. Just my opinion though. thats why i think we have to go tackle in the first round, or go after someone in free agency.
In Pioli We Trust
Barry Richardson blocked for Charles during his 6.4 ypc year.
Sure, a better right tackle would almost certainly produce even better results. But we’re not in an emergency situation right now, so I’d rather use that first rounder for something besides a luxury right tackle. Trade down if nothing else.

If Richardson isn't the worst starting right tackle in the NFL, that just means that there are some other REALLY shitty right tackles out there.
It doesn’t mean that Richardson isn’t terrible. I don’t want to spend a 1st on RT, but I definitely wouldn’t mind spending a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th on it.
I don’t care if the solution comes in free agency, the draft, a trade, or the in-house development of somebody like Mims (a longshot, to say the least). Richardson should not, under any circumstances, be our starting right tackle next year.

But in that year he was playing at a much higher level than he was this year. He may have been playing though some injuries we didn’t know about this year, but he regressed quite a bit. So if 2010 was the best we were going to see out of him then i think a new right tackle is more than a luxury, its a must.

Absolutely
We must do something at right tackle, and i think we will, i think we will draft a tackle with our first pick. Either way i think Pioli knows that he needs to produce, and produce quickly. Which leads me to believe he will be a bit looser with his wallet when free agency comes around. Hopefully he will go after one premier player for the Oline.
In Pioli We Trust
I disagree. I think the middle needs to be solidified first.
I am definitely worried about tackle depth. If Albert goes down, we’re screwed. But depth and guards and right tackles shouldn’t require first round picks.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Typically Tackles are in more demand than guards though.
So the good tackles tend to go fast, while guards can usually be found later in a draft. A good tackle can also help hide a bad guard to an extent. yes, our guards pull and zone block but they also don’t have to handle speed rushers from the outside. I would be fine going into next year with Lilja, Hudson, and Asamoah but I am not comfortable with B-Rich as a starter. RT is a much more pressing need than guard right now.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
I can't really argue with that. But we just disagree on Lilja.
I think he’s about at the end, and we need a quality backup for him if not a replacement. The middle of the line is more important than the edges, even if the tackles are usually more skilled.
When you gotta go in the lion's den, you don't go quiet. You go in loud, kick the door down and say WHERE IS THE SONUVABITCH. -B. Billick
I really think we will go after interior linemen in free agency
Like i said above Pioli knows that he needs to start producing here, so i think he will be a little looser and spend some of that cap room. Hopefully going after one linemen. then going after a tackle in the draft
In Pioli We Trust
That would be nice. It's just that in my football fantasies, I don't count on free agency.
It’s such a crap shoot. You can control who you go after in the draft much better. I mean, the guard we all want to target in FA is Nicks, but we’ve only got a 1/32 chance of getting him. The draft has several good guards, and we can choose where and if we draft them.
When you gotta go in the lion's den, you don't go quiet. You go in loud, kick the door down and say WHERE IS THE SONUVABITCH. -B. Billick
I think we will draft a guard
I just don’t think it will be one of their top priorities, i think they are going to look at a tackle first because in my opinion we could go another year with Lilja if we had to, but i don’t think the fans or organization wants to see another year with B Rich. plus you can always draft a guard in the 3rd or 4th round.

But i do think he realizes that it is a position that needs and upgrade immediately, and is more of a need than replacing Lilja.

Lilja is only 30.
He’ll be serviceable at least another year. I think they’ll draft a LGOTF, ala Asamoah and Hudson. Interior could be all kinds of studly a couple years from now.
Chiefs D held Raiders, Bears, Packers and Broncos to their lowest point outputs of the season. #RAC
"Serviceable" depends a lot on scheme and physique.
If his body is 100% and we stick with a (primarily) zone scheme, he’s adequate + for 2012. If we go with more of a man, or a power zone scheme…he’d better learn to snap the ball or seek employment elsewhere.
Not trying to dog on Lilja, he had an up-and-down ‘11 but he was our best lineman two years’ back. But I just dunno if we’re married to the zone system still, or not. And with a lineman who is 288, 290 pounds (or whatever), system means a lot in today’s NFL.

Straight up replacing Lilja is a bit of a luxury for this team right now
If they could bring in a sure thing FA to replace him, then sure…go for it. Chances are though, they’ll get a guard in the 3rd round who should back him up for a season and ideally be ready the following year as a starter.
There is no reason Barry Richardson should be starting on this team next year though. He needs to be replaced immediately by a FA or relatively high draft pick.
I think there are a couple pretty good Guard FA's this year
SD and NO both have really good guards that will be FA.
If Richturdson is starting for us next year, I will Tonya Harding the guy.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
If we go to a man-blocking scheme, how would you feel about him lining up at guard?
He gets toasted on the outside, but he could use his athleticism AND his power more effectively…

Actually...
The cheaper HDTV is the way to go with prices being what they are. If picture quality is at or near the same and the constant improvements in all the extras a $400 – $500 HDTV that needs to be replaced in two to three years will run you around $300 – $400 when you do replace it. Or you could go with the high end $1500 – $2000 HDTV that you will need to replace in five to six years for close to the same price the next time around.
And seeing as how there are only five or six panel makers for all the various TV manufacturers the chances that the panel on the cheapo HDTV is the same as on the high end HDTV are pretty good.
Great. Where the hell were you six months ago?

Why not take two tackles in this years draft?
I’m not bashing on Albert. I think he is doing a good job. After hearing what Muir said about him being good, but he will never make it to Canton, as a tackle, makes me want to see us draft Reiff in Rd 1. I say draft a tackle that will make it to there. Move Albert over to LG where I think he will excel. He will know what the LT faces and can help out a rookie. Then look to get RT in the draft or FA. I haven’t been too impressed with Lilga this year.
I would be surprised if Pioli did NOT double down on O line in this draft.
But stop right there with the Albert is a guard talk. No way any rookie moves him out of left tackle, much less Reiff. And you can’t count on drafting a HoF’er.
When you gotta go in the lion's den, you don't go quiet. You go in loud, kick the door down and say WHERE IS THE SONUVABITCH. -B. Billick
Agree with both
No rookie is going to supplant Albert immediately at LT, but I think they should draft a high-upside LT, someone who they think has the potential to be an upgrade – more like a value pick in 2nd or 3rd rather than using the 1st.
If all goes well, after a year of seasoning, you’d have a very good LT, a great LG. If not, hopefully the new tackle can be a good fit at RT. And failing that you’d have a backup tackle for depth.

He has been injury prone. The time I have seen him he has been very productive at center. The only measure of true success in the NFL is the Vince Lombardi trophy. Anything less is a rationalization.
more exciting than the game last night.

Well this may mean
Chiefs are going after Bowe , McClain , and Carr now . I could see some bigger name signings pretty soon. Hopefully

I like Daryl Harris.
Hopefully this is the year that he makes the teams and is a quality backup for us.

Does he have any more PS eligibility left?

I believe it is now or never.
I’m thinking he will end up being replaced by a draft pick…

I have heard how much they 'like' Harris for a while
…but if he was really any good somebody would have signed him off the PS
Of course
other teams wouldn’t have near as much info on him as the Chiefs. It’s not like there haven’t been other practice squad players who have gone on to be very good players.

Draft Martin in the first rd to play left tackle.
Move Albert to left guard, Hudson to center, Asamoah to RG and draft a RT in the second rd. An offensive line we can be proud of for years.
Martin will be gone by 11
I want Decastro or Burfict at 11. I’m leaning towards Decastro, hes the best OG to come out in a long time. Absolutely dominant on the ground game with great athleticism to pull and block in space. He will be a starter and a Pro Bowler from year one and we wont have to pay him 60 million until his 4 year contract runs out. 57 million is what NO other OG got and I’m sure thats what Nicks will want. Plug Decastro in at LG and sign Levi Brown in FA and you have a line that looks like Albert/Decastro/Hudon/Aso/Brown. We could also draft pure RT Bobbie Massie in the 3rd. I wish Ricky Wagner would have come out this year, hes another Gabe Carimi.
With a line like that, Charles runs for 2000 yards!
With Albert/Decastro/Hudson we could easily have one of the better left OLs in the league.
what about?
mike caputo center from nebraska might……not even have to use a draft pick on him? lots of playing time from the huskers

David Mims is the answer at RT (or LT) this season. Begin believing Chiefs Nation
Hey Chief Nation Fans, a quick reminder: David Mims was signed and developed to play this season. Bring in all of the draft picks you can, but pencil in Mims on the OL. This freak of nature only needed time to learn his craft (and NFL footwork). Because no one outside of the Chiefs have seen Mims since the pre-season, I’d venture to say his skill set has improved leaps and bounds (just ask Gaither and the 8 other OL brought into camp last year). This kid has worked to get to this level, now is the time for Mims to show he’s ready to start, and he is…. Go Chiefs
