Kansas City Chiefs Finish The Season In Last Place

The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos on Sunday but Tim Tebow and Co. are still AFC West champs. The Oakland Raiders lost to the San Diego Chargers which means the Broncos win the division. They used the third tiebreaker -- common opponents -- to determine the division winner.

This is an odd feeling. The Chiefs just beat the Broncos an hour ago yet Denver is now celebrating a division title. (That's what you get for counting on Oakland.)

I found myself wanting the Broncos to miss the playoffs so I'm disappointed by the result of the season. The Chiefs are, officially, a last place team (which is nice for scheduling purposes next year). But it's still a depressing result.

1. Denver Broncos (8-8)

2. San Diego Chargers (8-8)

3. Oakland Raiders (8-8)

4. Kansas City Chiefs (7-9)

Well I predicted we would go 7-9 this season...

Though I thought that we would be good enough for 2nd… though Denver would be in last place, and San Diego just behind us.

Only thing I got right was the record…

Go Chiefs!!!!

I thought at the beginning of this year that 9-7 would win the division

turns out 8-8 would’ve been enough for us.

Tebow might know Jesus, but Bill Muir is old enough to have actually babysat him in the manger.

most people were saying

Before the season we would be lucky to be 7-9 or 8-8. And that was before we lost 4 major starters. So I would say 7-9 could be considered a decent season considering everything that happened this year

And also

Despite everything, we’re two blocked FG’s from being the division winner…

as long as the three big-name OT are gone. DeCastro, based on his play this year, looks to be an absolute stud at guard. A DeCastro, Hudson, Asamoah interior should be solid for the next ten years.

If we had made 1 of those 2 blocked field goals last week, we'd be in the playoffs.

We didn’t even get to knock out Denver, so it really would have just been better for us to lose and secure top 10 in the draft. Now we’ll be top 15.

Hopefully the win will bring some momentum going into the offseason. Keep Romeo as coach and bring in a competent OC with a new QB. Orton isn’t the answer.

I think if he’s got a week, he can draw up ten to twenty winners…which is why we usually look good in the first and second quarters.

The knock on Flynn coming out of college was his lack of PT in a pro-style offense, and his weak arm. A boffo game with the kind of weapons GB has? Against a Lions D that evidently was scared of playing like men?

I don't think we are a negative fanbase, think it was just a rough year

and we have a lot of holes on this team. The defense is solid but needs a NT really bad. The offense has some playmakers but needs upgrades at OLine and QB. We also need depth all over.

We Can Be

There are a few teams in the NFL whose fans deserve to be as pessimistic as they want. The Browns, Chiefs, and Lions. None of these teams have been to, much less won, a Super Bowl since before 1971. The only other teams to not have a Super Bowl appearance are expansion teams, which are still relatively young. Every other team in the NFL has reached the big show. We’ve been abused as fans for decades now, so please excuse us if we get a little snippy. It’s been a rough 40 years.

Best case scenario happened if you ask me.

Raiders wasted two premium picks on nothing. Denver is stuck with Tebow for the near future, which should set the team back about 5 years and Norv and all his aging talent mightve bought themselves another year. Win win win.

Would’ve involved OAK going to the playoffs and winning a game.

So we draft who? I know its early and combine tends to mix things up a bit but

If it were my decision, I would do everything possible to trade up and draft RG3.

I can see us drafting an Olineman( Riley Reiff -Iowa/ Jonathan Martin-STanford/ David Decastro – Stanford) or Trent Richardson. Otherwise we trade back for more picks, but still fill those positions.

They can build a team with FA too, but they really haven’t shown a history of that

Flynn = a less athletic Cassel

Cassel made his bones throwing to Randy Moss, Wes Welker for a season. Flynn has made his throwing to Nelson, Finley etc.

No thanks, I’ll stick with our caretakers we currently have. Let’s draft the young passer of the future, if we can.

by ChiefWarPaint on Jan 1, 2012 9:07 PM CST up reply actions

To you Flynn haters...

aaaaaaaaaaghk!

You’re wrong. The only thing stopping this guy from starting in the NFL is some dude named Rodgers. And btw, Cassel didn’t work out. Get over it.

Orton has proven that argument quite substantially. Even on today’s crappy passing day for Orton, he still finished with 180 yards… only 10 yards shy of Cassel’s average for the season.

And whoever wrote that post about Flynn being less athletic than Cassel: BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! Based on WHAT research?

Personally, I like what Orton brings to the table. With that being said, bring in Flynn and let’s see who can lead the team. Think about it, half of Flynn’s old LSU teammates are already here.

Hi, J_r0kk. I'm the one who aksed about Flynn, athleticism, Cassel, etc.

Guess we need to be introduced. I checked out your profile, and see you hail from Cajun country. That explains the Flynn love; you’d actually know more about him than I would then.

1) I’m not a Flynn hater. If the man’s destined to be a star—and he could be, remember, Len Dawson was a backup before arriving in KC—he will be and someone will give him the chance.
2) I’m not wowed by a player putting up Tecmo stats with a loaded offense. Flynn may be a starter in waiting, but his numbers today came from an insanely good opportunity against an opponent who couldn’t stop Flynn OR Flynn’s teammates. So did Cassel’s big money year in NE…he just had another fourteen games to show it in that one year. Both men showed their skill in loaded offenses as backups to the league’s best passer (at that time). That’s all I was saying.
3) Don’t misread me, I’m over Cassel. I got over Cassel in training camp when I saw ZERO improvement. My acceptance of Cassel’s mediocrity, in fact, is possibly biasing me against Matt Flynn.
4) The athleticism comment comes from the Athlon Pro Sports 2007 Draft scouting report (yes, I still have the magazine). I cannot web-link it but the mag sits in my spare bedroom.
5) I too dig Orton as a skilled placeholder QB…if hell freezes and he becomes more, I’m all for it. But I want to see this team snag a real, young passer to groom, preferably in the draft.

Give me some good info on Flynn…strengths? Weaknesses? And out of curiosity, is LSU’s passer worth a rookie FA contract or not?

"I’ve got to play well enough," he said, "so we can make it to the playoffs."

Sup Sal...

I’ll answer your questions as you have them numbered. (Love the name btw. I was a huge Saleaumua fan from back in the day).

1) The guy has always played behind superstar QBs. At LSU he had to watch JaMarcus Russell lead the team until he was drafted by the Raiders. Although “doughboy” Russell was a complete bust in the pros, he was a force to be reckoned with in college. In his first full year as a starting QB at the college level, he led LSU to the national championship. Even in college, without much seasoning, the guy was a winner.

Then, of course, in the pros he follows another superstar in Aaron Rodgers. IMO though, I think it’s the best thing that could have ever happened to Flynn. For four years he’s been able to sit behind Rodgers and study the defense as Rodgers sees it. Today was his day to show everyone what he’s made of.

2) I understand what you’re saying about the Madden stats. Looking back though, I’m really not that impressed with the stats Cassel put up in his year with NE. They weren’t much better than Tyler Thigpens even though he was surrounded with all that talent (he only averaged 230 yds/game passing and 89.4 QB rating vs. Thigpen’s 186 yds/game passing and 76.0 QB rating). TD:INT were almost even between the two QBs that season. I think they thought they had something special in Cassel, but they were wrong.

3) You and me both. I think Cassel has regressed since the 2010 season. More often than not, Cassel has gone for his first option in passing situations (whether his receivers are locked up like Fort Knox or not) and he has repeatedly failed to work his progressions in the routes being run. He is the prototypical “primary receiver or dump off” option QB. There is no middle ground with him. I have seen him pass on so many wide open receivers this year because he simply misread the development of the patterns being run. It’s actually quite a shame. I would have thought a $63 million investment would have paid better dividends. Cassel has proven to be a serviceable back up.

4) Here’s a scouting report I dug up from his combine:
http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles?id=367#tabs:tab-analysis
Give it a read and you will get a better understanding of this guy.

5) I agree with the “draft and develop a QB” mentality. But c’mon. We’re talking about the Chiefs. We haven’t done that since… since… since… hahahahahaha. Either way, I look at it like this: If you can’t get Luck, you’re throwing darts in the dark. Just wait until your guy becomes available. Don’t try to force it.

As far as your last question, I would imagine you’re talking about Jarett Lee? I like the kid and I believe he’s a transfer from Harvard so he’s obviously got some intellegence. After college he will probably be a very good insurance salesman.

I hope this insight helped a little.

Not Jarrett, the other one. Jefferson?

Read a report talking up his measurables, wondered about his intellect. Lee is all intellect and no measurables.

I appreciate the run-over—and the scouting report on Flynn. It actually HAS changed my mind somewhat…you know what, he has potential. His physical skills sound better than I’d first understood.

If we were hiring the coach from the Packers, Philbin, I could see a run for Flynn. But he’s not a Parcells/Belichick “system guy,” which leads me to suspect we’d pass over him for Cassel (again) or Orton (again). Especially since, like you said, we don’t exactly draft our passers in KC.

But he is a much better caretaker QB than Cassel is, that’s for sure. And you and I can bet money we don’t have all night long, but you KNOW Pioli isn’t going to sacrifice the picks we’d need to spend to get Griffin.
