No Surprises On Chiefs First Practice Squad Of The Year
I was out and about doing exciting wedding planning things with Ms. Primetime so I haven't given any thoughts on the Kansas City Chiefs first practice squad of the year. The team announced eight players to the practice squad yesterday including FB Shane Bannon, LB Justin Cole, G Darryl Harris, WR Jeremy Horne, DB Quinten Lawrence, OL Butch Lewis, OL David Mims and NT Anthony Toribio.
Basically, no surprises. The Chiefs were able to get these guys signed and announce the practice squad within a few hours because they had been with the team and were all still in Kansas City.
On the list of practice squad guys, I can see several eventually getting some time on the 53-man roster. There's very little depth at inside linebacker so Cole could be called back up at some point. Same goes for Harris and the guard position. Lewis and Mims could also be candidates to eventually hit the active roster if anything happens to OT Brandon Albert, OT Jared Gaither or OT Barry Richardson.
If the Chiefs do bring any of these guys up to the active roster, the player will have to stay there for three weeks. So it's a strategic move figuring out who you bring up from the practice squad. It can't be just one game replacements.
I'm fairly happy with the Chiefs practice squad right now. It will definitely change as time goes on, and other guys are signed.

I'm happy with this PS group, too.
Especially seeing Harris and Lewis on the squad—that makes me feel a little better about our offensive line depth. It wouldn’t be too hard to sit one of our 25 defensive linemen or one of our 11 safeties (numbers slightly eggagerated, of course) and promote the better of these two to the line, if necessary…

11 safeties are needed
Outside of Copper there might not be another WR on ST’S so that explains the deep secondary.
Also 7 OL on the 53 is 1 below the norm for Haley in Kc

Exactly...for me, knowing we can drop one safety (ahem--Piscatelli?) and snag one of our own young guys is valuable.
That’d up us to the 8 that Haley and Muir typically carry. I’d imagine they’re waiting to see if they need an 8th lineman, which of the extra positions to drop from without hurting a side of the ball like special teams, and which of these two gets their mind the rightest.
Both linemen are 6’4 or so, and run about 310, and can play 3 or 4 OL positions.

These guys aren't Pro Bowlers but they know the system and have some skills to refine.

preferred Ingersoll
Mike Ingersoll getting playing time in the last pre-season game during the 2 minute drill was impressive. He showed a lot of good technique & I thought he had a shot with this team.
I would have preferred his 4 years at NC & his play during the games over Mims on the PS. I would have more confidence with INGERSOLL Coming into a regular season game then Mims at this point.

I liked Ingersoll, but liked Lewis better.
Did Ingersoll play any C in training camp or college? Harris does, which is probably a deciding factor between the two of them.
Lewis can do anything but C.

My thing is, how many o-line spots can he play in the NFL?
If he was a college tackle and NFL guard…my guess is KC felt he was an inside guy only. Still could make his was back on the roster/PS in one form or another.

Not necesarily a PS comment
But if he were healthy wouldn’t Brad Cottam be a pretty smart signing right about now?

wonder
Is He still pursueing football?

I'm not sure.
I would imagine that would depend on his health as well. I can’t remember if there was any news about him after he wasn’t picked up. If he had got looks from other teams etc or if his health was the end of his career.

It'd be nice to bring him back on, if he's still keeping up with the game.
He knows the system and its expectations. Boy, until that neck injury, he’d been having a really solid game too—starting to put all his skills together.
