Chiefs Depth Chart: The First 53-Man Roster Is Here

The Kansas City Chiefs have made all their roster moves to get down to 53 players on the roster. They waived 25 players and placed two on injured reserve shortly after the 5:00 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) deadline today. Here's a link to all the Chiefs roster cuts

Some of those players that were cut will be back tomorrow on the practice squad and, looking at the Chiefs current depth chart, I'd imagine other moves will be coming as well. Just as the Chiefs made 27 roster moves, every other team did as well which means a lot of players are now on the open market.

I've taken a look at the Chiefs last depth chart and erased the names of those who have been released. This is an unofficial depth chart but it gives you an idea of where they stand at certain positions:

I don’t think our starter at the position is on the roster yet.

You are only making 7 OL active on game day and here they are. Expect 2 (Lewis and MIms) to be added to the practice squad.
Unless you replace Richardson or someone else along the line — 7 is PERFECT!!

It turned out that his agent told him not to sign the contract until the new CBA was signed/in place.

A kick to the nads is an upgrade over Sabby Piscatelli.

As I said on another thread, I totally respect Pioli and Haley’s ability to do their jobs….they don’t tell me what financial strategies to use and I don’t tell them how to run the Chiefs.

(But I stil hate, hate hate Pisactelli’s presence on this club…I hope and pray that Coach Thomas can make a DB out of Jersey Shore yet).

I am reserving judgment

on the borderliners (Battle, Sabby, etc) until I see who other teams have cut and who we may grab.

I am sure people realize that this is certainly not the team we will go forward with and some holes will be plugged, but when I do not know.

Positive note, I am very happy for Keary Colbert and Amon Gordon, two guys who really defied major odds to make this team. Good for them and they obviously earned it because we aren’t much for charity cases.

Baltimore has a very good rookie Qb, and he is mobil, we sure could you him, Cassel is not the future of the Chiefs, look how long we kept Croyle, what we need to do is a “where are they now” and let us know who was responsible for recruiting these players who are no longer in the league and who are presently on the roster and shouldnt be.
We are currently hiring until positions filled, should it go on to say, no experience needed we will train, or will we ever change.

He’s definitely not. If he wins us 2 or 3 Super Bowls, I will change my stance on that.

However, he is a proven commodity, whether he is your type of QB or not. There is not a way that this happens.

Plus Flacco has won 3 road playoff games, and they’ve made the playoffs each year he’s been with the team. Taylor starts only if Flacco is hurt.

Who starts for the Colts if Manning goes down?

In the end, most teams in the league are pretty much screwed if their starting QB goes down.

by bh13 on Sep 3, 2011 7:16 PM CDT up reply actions

And that's where not doing a little research first bites me

I’m so used to the Colts having Manning and Sorgi, I didn’t even think to see who their current backup is.

Point remains though, most teams are in trouble if their starter goes down. Some will be in a better position than others obviously, but I’d say at least half the league if not more (without looking into teams depth charts at all) would be screwed if their starting QB went down for any length of time.

Is B. Waters even in playing shape?

I mean, the chances of him re-signing here are next to zero. I mean, if you believe what Haley talks about, when he says, “I want everyone to be on or near the same page conditioning-wise”.

Waters knows the system, but what has he been doing in terms of football readiness. Not just conditioning in his case, because we all realize that working out to be in football shape, and practicing football, are not one and the same….

On that note, I would love to see B. Waters come back and try one more time. But it is very unlikely he will land here.

that Haley talked so much about how good the competition was yet one guy made the team who was in camp for a week and had retired, another guy made it who hadn’t played since 2008 and was a college coach, and a third who has been in the league since 2004 but has only played about a full season worth of games.

Somebody who the Chiefs might look at. Played in Green Bay for a while, had 6 TDs one year. A 9 year veteran, but someone they might look at.

brandon bair made the team because the chiefs believe, optimistically, that he can be a DE in their base 3-4 defense. I hope he can become half as good as pittsburgh’s DE Aaron Smith. The tyson jackson experiment is nearing the end.

tucker

tucker got cut. tucker is better and has more upside than kerry colbert, who made the team. the colbert decision doesnt make sense. tucker is a good special teamer, too.

by michaelaglover on Sep 3, 2011 7:44 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

I agree

That was a head scratcher. Tucker did have some drops but his upside is alot more than Colbert who’s already shown what he’s got (let’s hope I’m wrong). other than that, no surprises except previosuly mentioned weak depth on OL, especially considering Lilja has some type of injury. The news on TMO is sad. His college rep came back to bite him. Let’s hope he’s not another brokie Croyle. His loss is going to hurt us big-time.

by Nicoloco on Sep 3, 2011 7:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Would Tucker

have even been on the active gameday roster? Probably not…keeping 6 WR plus DMC….at most 5 plus DMC would be active.

Haha I would agree but...

Haley has had some success with his wierd depth charts. (Bowe, DJ) So if putting Baldwin low on the depth chart helps his overall progress I guess I can live with seeing Urban for the first part of the year.

by ilchiefsfan on Sep 3, 2011 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions

also, “starting” on the Haley offense means you’re out there on the first play. doesn’t mean he won’t take you out on the second.

Doesn't look too bad to me.

8 DLineman seems a little much but all great 34’s have a constant rotation of lineman. All the people worrying about so few OLineman, i’m pretty sure we only kept 7 on the active roster last year too, at the most 8 but no more than that.

by RamX21 on Sep 3, 2011 7:47 PM CDT reply actions

You are correct

We basically kept a few extra DL instead of LBs….and an extra WR instead of OL.

by AZDiamond75 on Sep 3, 2011 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions

you assume there will be no injuries

If there is you deal with it at the time. I’ve never seen people so up in arms about backups. They’re backups, what do you want them to be as good as the starters, come on now.

by RamX21 on Sep 3, 2011 7:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I think they probably could have gone with 7 D-linemen

It’s possible they still could if someone else gets picked up. Either that or they just didn’t want to risk losing Bair which is fine by me. Gordon is this year’s Shaun Smith I think, playing inside and out.

by bh13 on Sep 3, 2011 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions

forget upgrade signings

Let’s just talk additions- if we sign 1 back up OL and another SILB, who do we cut- I think Piscatelli and Battle, but we also appear heavy at DE.

the tony m. injury is a big blow to the offense. but pioli knew he was an injury risk when he drafted him. i dont know why haley played tony in the GB game. i mean, the guy was coming off knee surgery in the offseason and started camp on the PUP list.

by michaelaglover on Sep 3, 2011 7:49 PM CDT reply actions

Pope and Becht are fine, but they won’t scare anyone. O’Connell has some athleticism, but I’m not sure we’ll ever see it. TE right now might be the poorest stocked spot on the roster.
