Chiefs Depth Chart: The First 53-Man Roster Is Here
The Kansas City Chiefs have made all their roster moves to get down to 53 players on the roster. They waived 25 players and placed two on injured reserve shortly after the 5:00 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) deadline today. Here's a link to all the Chiefs roster cuts.
Some of those players that were cut will be back tomorrow on the practice squad and, looking at the Chiefs current depth chart, I'd imagine other moves will be coming as well. Just as the Chiefs made 27 roster moves, every other team did as well which means a lot of players are now on the open market.
I've taken a look at the Chiefs last depth chart and erased the names of those who have been released. This is an unofficial depth chart but it gives you an idea of where they stand at certain positions:
WR: Jerheme Urban, Steve Breaston, Jonathan Baldwin
LT: Branden Albert, Jared Gaither
LG: Ryan Lilja
C: Casey Wiegmann, Rodney Hudson
RG: Jon Asamoah
RT: Barry Richardson
TE: Leonard Pope, Jake O'Connell, Anthony Becht
WR: Dwayne Bowe, Dexter McCluster, Terrance Copper, Keary Colbert
QB: Matt Cassel, Tyler Palko, Ricky Stanzi
FB: Le'Ron McClain
RB: Thomas Jones, Jamaal Charles, Jackie Battle
DEFENSE
LDE: Tyson Jackson, Allen Bailey, Amon Gordon
NT: Kelly Gregg, Jerrell Powe
RDE: Glenn Dorsey, Wallace Gilberry, Brandon Bair
LOLB: Andy Studebaker, Cameron Sheffield, Justin Houston
LILB: Jovan Belcher
RILB: Derrick Johnson, Demorrio Williams, Cory Greenwood
ROLB: Tamba Hali
LCB: Brandon Flowers, Travis Daniels
RCB: Brandon Carr, Javier Arenas, Jalil Brown
SS: Eric Berry, Donald Washington
FS: Kendrick Lewis, Jon McGraw, Sabby PIscitelli
SPECIAL TEAMS
P: Dustin Colquitt, Ryan Succop
K: Ryan Succop
LS: Thomas Gafford
PR: Javier Arenas, Dexter McCluster, Steve Breaston, Jerheme Urban, Donald Washington
KR: Javier Arenas, Dexter McCluster, Steve Breaston, Donald Washington

Unless Gaither is healthy enough to start at RT..
I don’t think our starter at the position is on the roster yet.
Brich is destined to become a swing T.

Last year we had 8
Albert, Waters, Weigmann, Lilja, Richardson, Niswanger, O’Callaghan, Asamoah
The year I worked at Arrowhead for my first job ever, the Chiefs were 8-0 at home. I think that the Kansas City Chiefs should pay me to go to the games so they always win

I love Gaither and Hudson as backups right now
But I’d like it a lot more if Gaither, Lilja and Wiegmann didn’t all have concerns right now.

What is Gaither's concern?

My guess is that Piscatelli and/or Battle could be cut
to sign another tackle or guard. They will also have a couple on the practice squad they can bring up when needed. This roster isn’t done yet.
Agreed.
Leave them now & cut them when we sign the cut guys

puzzled!
I don’t see keeping Piscatelli over depth at O-Line.
Battle has been lingering at #3 for a while, but he’s WAY too valuable there, considering how strong he is in so many other areas…

These are GREAT OL moves...
You are only making 7 OL active on game day and here they are. Expect 2 (Lewis and MIms) to be added to the practice squad.
Unless you replace Richardson or someone else along the line — 7 is PERFECT!!

I could see up to 3 on PS, from our own cuts anyway
I think Ingersoll has a chance to stick, along with Lewis and Mims.

I agree
But that would make 8(!) WRs
The year I worked at Arrowhead for my first job ever, the Chiefs were 8-0 at home. I think that the Kansas City Chiefs should pay me to go to the games so they always win
Only really need two RBs
McClain can carry the ball too. I don’t see any carries for Battle
Predictions:
KC will be a Superbowl favorite in 2012
Battle is there for ST
There’s no way they only go with 2RBs. WIth as much as we run, I don’t think they’d do it. Though I suppose it is possible!

The only thing was
that he couldn’t contain the run or wrap up on tackles….he could get caught out of position.
He looks lost with that much space to cover on the outside
Put him inside and have him take on blockers, keeping DJ free. He is also an upgrade in pass defense over Belcher.

Personally I saw more from Jackson this preseason than Gilberry
Don’t remember much from Dorsey either to be honest. To be fair, I was watching Jackson a bit closer than the others.
Gilberry didn't get many snaps at all
Jackson looked a lot better(well the whole defense did) when STude was out and Houston(or Sheff) was in and the edge got set better.

I remember him being late all too well
I was one trying to keep people from making a big deal of it, not worrying too much even after his first day where he got gassed.
He’s got some work to do in some areas for sure, but the threat he brings just makes me hope he takes the job from Studie soon.
Everyone was throwing a fit about how he was prolly drugged up or that he was already a bust
It turned out that his agent told him not to sign the contract until the new CBA was signed/in place.
I agree, having that pass rusher on the opposite of Hali would due huge things for this defense. Houston has surprised me in his ability to drop and hold the edge so far, hopefully he keeps improving and takes the job by force

The year I worked at Arrowhead for my first job ever, the Chiefs were 8-0 at home. I think that the Kansas City Chiefs should pay me to go to the games so they always win
I think
it was because Haley wanted to see Bailey in game situations…he knows what Gilberry will give him.
I hope that's why
Though I would have thought (hoped?) that with all the work Gilberry put in to be an every down player, Haley would have given him the reps to test it out

I wonder if gilberry is trade bait for a team looking for a quality 4-3 DE
Who has shown a nack for getting after the QB. He could be valuable.
You don't give up pass rushers
unless there is a contract issue and you can get 3 draft picks.
With the rookie scale now, teams won't part with draft picks
as easily as before.
I didn't even think of that.
I can’t think of anything else they have that I would want..except for Shaun Smith. :p
I'm sure Shaun Smith would love to have Gilberry there (no sarcasm)

Positions open, Full time needed
FS, NT, RT, DE.
With the tough schedule, ahead, we should be high on the draft list, could we please fill these holes on our team next year, preseason shows where the need is now draft right and fill the fr kn holes !

Jackson cut yet…this is his make or break year…tough to grade him last year with the injury…maybe the 8 DL kept is a message to him.
Positions open Full time needed
Baltimore has a very good rookie Qb, and he is mobil, we sure could you him, Cassel is not the future of the Chiefs, look how long we kept Croyle, what we need to do is a “where are they now” and let us know who was responsible for recruiting these players who are no longer in the league and who are presently on the roster and shouldnt be.
We are currently hiring until positions filled, should it go on to say, no experience needed we will train, or will we ever change.
Tyrod Taylor?
Yeah, Baltimore isn’t letting him go.

I’m confused. Are you saying we should trade for Tyrod Taylor because he will be a hall of famer?
The year I worked at Arrowhead for my first job ever, the Chiefs were 8-0 at home. I think that the Kansas City Chiefs should pay me to go to the games so they always win
no
im saying because Cassel made the pro-bowl 1 time does not make him a HOF player he is not the answer and he needs to go ! Taylor rookie Qb, has better skills than Cassel and by seasons end watch who will be the ravens starting Qb
No way Tyrod takes over for Flacco without a major injury to Flacco
Tyrod is not ready to start in the NFL, he is a major product.. yet you want to trade the farm for him?

Who said anything about Cassel being a Hall of Famer?
He’s definitely not. If he wins us 2 or 3 Super Bowls, I will change my stance on that.
However, he is a proven commodity, whether he is your type of QB or not. There is not a way that this happens.
Plus Flacco has won 3 road playoff games, and they’ve made the playoffs each year he’s been with the team. Taylor starts only if Flacco is hurt.
The year I worked at Arrowhead for my first job ever, the Chiefs were 8-0 at home. I think that the Kansas City Chiefs should pay me to go to the games so they always win
As of now, either Palko or Stanzi
That answer may be different this time tomorrow. But it definitely won’t be Tyrod Taylor.

Who starts for the Colts if Manning goes down?
In the end, most teams in the league are pretty much screwed if their starting QB goes down.
And that's where not doing a little research first bites me
I’m so used to the Colts having Manning and Sorgi, I didn’t even think to see who their current backup is.
Point remains though, most teams are in trouble if their starter goes down. Some will be in a better position than others obviously, but I’d say at least half the league if not more (without looking into teams depth charts at all) would be screwed if their starting QB went down for any length of time.
Except when Brady went down a few years back...
Then that one kid from USC stepped in and took them to the playoffs, IIRC.
I forget. What was his name again…?

We will be making some moves for sure...
Its just that I’m not holding my breath on players that couldn’t even make other teams 53. There will be some gems out there but I’m not expecting anyone to come in and light the NFL on fire. With that said we need another OG And OT. Possibly another TE if there’s anyone decent out there. An ILB, and I know we can’t possibly be keeping Sabby. I mean cmon. I’m no scout and I can even tell he doesn’t belong in the NFL. I’m also interested to see which QBs got dropped out there cuz Palko isn’t a 2nd stringer
by Chiefs08Matt on Sep 3, 2011 6:17 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
my guess
the backup o-line is listed at the tightend position, we will be using our tightends as blockers more so then pass catchers
That doesn't help in case of injury
Pope is tall but he’s no offensive guard. I’m more concerned about if someone goes down with injury rather than a goal line formation.
The year I worked at Arrowhead for my first job ever, the Chiefs were 8-0 at home. I think that the Kansas City Chiefs should pay me to go to the games so they always win
I think....
sarcasm was in the TE being OL back since the TE ’s kept are not known for the pass catching ability
Everyone, the O-Line depth problem has an easy solution..... Rudy Niswanger was released by the Lions earlier today
BOOM! Problem solved.
I was joking, but he does have experience starting at RG and C
If he can’t make the Lions who have one of the worst O-lines in the league, do we really want him on the Chiefs roster?

so for use that means next week on Saturday. Basically… after game 1 is over on Sunday.. the following Monday will be the day most teams can sign vets without guaranteeing their salary for the year.

Is B. Waters even in playing shape?
I mean, the chances of him re-signing here are next to zero. I mean, if you believe what Haley talks about, when he says, “I want everyone to be on or near the same page conditioning-wise”.
Waters knows the system, but what has he been doing in terms of football readiness. Not just conditioning in his case, because we all realize that working out to be in football shape, and practicing football, are not one and the same….
On that note, I would love to see B. Waters come back and try one more time. But it is very unlikely he will land here.

Always wondered what they made that stuff out of
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.
Stop hitting on me
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.
Does it anybody find it funny
that Haley talked so much about how good the competition was yet one guy made the team who was in camp for a week and had retired, another guy made it who hadn’t played since 2008 and was a college coach, and a third who has been in the league since 2004 but has only played about a full season worth of games.
I'd call it sad and not funny
Doesn’t say much for the guys they beat out to make the roster

The Eagles cut TE Donald Lee
Somebody who the Chiefs might look at. Played in Green Bay for a while, had 6 TDs one year. A 9 year veteran, but someone they might look at.
The year I worked at Arrowhead for my first job ever, the Chiefs were 8-0 at home. I think that the Kansas City Chiefs should pay me to go to the games so they always win
Def
and I would think KC would be attractive with no other quality TEs. I think we get help at G/C, ILB, TE, and possibly switch out a safety….I think we are SOL at Tackle.
Donald Lee would/could be an upgrade over Pope.
Better pass catcher, equal blocker…

Donnie Avery is released
Theres a guy Id love to see us pick up. Injury risk but the upside is worth it.

brandon bair
brandon bair made the team because the chiefs believe, optimistically, that he can be a DE in their base 3-4 defense. I hope he can become half as good as pittsburgh’s DE Aaron Smith. The tyson jackson experiment is nearing the end.
There is a good chance of that
he is big and old for being a rookie.
I guess I'm just not seeing it
To my untrained eye, Jackson is really starting to come along. Sure there’s still some rough edges, but even the best players have off games.
Oh dear, that would be awesome.
he can become half as good as pittsburgh’s DE Aaron Smith

WHY the HELL
did Urban make the team over Verran Tucker? Urban isnt even better than me setting in my lazyboy. Also gotta get mcgraw the hell outta here too!
Urban has great hands and is eons better then Tucker.
If you said Tucker over Copper you would have an argument since they contribute in the same ways.
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."
I think Haley
went for veteran and hands over potential…too many drops for Tucker and Horne.
McGraw is one of the best tacklers on the team
I don’t necessarily want him out there a lot, but he’s a guy I feel comfortable with knowing that if he’s got a guy lined up, he’s going down.
Thank you
I’ve been thinking that about McGraw for a long time. But I was thinking i’d be flagged majorly for saying it.

tucker
tucker got cut. tucker is better and has more upside than kerry colbert, who made the team. the colbert decision doesnt make sense. tucker is a good special teamer, too.

I agree
That was a head scratcher. Tucker did have some drops but his upside is alot more than Colbert who’s already shown what he’s got (let’s hope I’m wrong). other than that, no surprises except previosuly mentioned weak depth on OL, especially considering Lilja has some type of injury. The news on TMO is sad. His college rep came back to bite him. Let’s hope he’s not another brokie Croyle. His loss is going to hurt us big-time.
Would Tucker
have even been on the active gameday roster? Probably not…keeping 6 WR plus DMC….at most 5 plus DMC would be active.
Colbert can do what Urban does and is leagues better than urban. we dont need both of those guys. we need to sign
Brandon Tate or Donnie Avery and cut Urban
I do NOT
want Urban opposite dbowe, he has no skills, he cant make big time catches and he cant run after the catch, why the hell is he out there starting. I call bullshit
Haha I would agree but...
Haley has had some success with his wierd depth charts. (Bowe, DJ) So if putting Baldwin low on the depth chart helps his overall progress I guess I can live with seeing Urban for the first part of the year.
agreed
also, “starting” on the Haley offense means you’re out there on the first play. doesn’t mean he won’t take you out on the second.

Doesn't look too bad to me.
8 DLineman seems a little much but all great 34’s have a constant rotation of lineman. All the people worrying about so few OLineman, i’m pretty sure we only kept 7 on the active roster last year too, at the most 8 but no more than that.
You are correct
We basically kept a few extra DL instead of LBs….and an extra WR instead of OL.
8, but that was praying every week we had no injury

you assume there will be no injuries
If there is you deal with it at the time. I’ve never seen people so up in arms about backups. They’re backups, what do you want them to be as good as the starters, come on now.
I think they probably could have gone with 7 D-linemen
It’s possible they still could if someone else gets picked up. Either that or they just didn’t want to risk losing Bair which is fine by me. Gordon is this year’s Shaun Smith I think, playing inside and out.
forget upgrade signings
Let’s just talk additions- if we sign 1 back up OL and another SILB, who do we cut- I think Piscatelli and Battle, but we also appear heavy at DE.

tony
the tony m. injury is a big blow to the offense. but pioli knew he was an injury risk when he drafted him. i dont know why haley played tony in the GB game. i mean, the guy was coming off knee surgery in the offseason and started camp on the PUP list.
If the injury happened
that easy it would have happened in the first game…I don’t blame Haley…he had this plan from the beginnng of preseason and kept to it.
TE has to be a priority position in the next draft
Pope and Becht are fine, but they won’t scare anyone. O’Connell has some athleticism, but I’m not sure we’ll ever see it. TE right now might be the poorest stocked spot on the roster.
Can teams select players from the waiver wire now?

I say we pick up LJ
Since his ass got cut from Miami. We could use another bruising powerback. Right?
Hahahhaha. 2.7 back out of a job. Fitting.
