There is a lot of serious and well thought argument concerning the Chief's tanking the season and drafting the QB position. Here is my take:
The Chiefs have not had even a decent QB since Dawson. (I don’t count Montana).
High round QB’s are risky, yes, but there have been some notable exceptions that have changed franchises.
Peyton Manning is an example. The Colts were similar to the Chiefs in that they had history, albeit in Baltimore. After they moved to Indy they sucked for years. They sucked for Manning’s first few years.
I am sure the Colt fans were skeptical that a quarterback could help a mediocre team. For crying out loud they had sooo many holes to fill. The surrounding cast was not the greatest (Peyton got hammered in the beginning). Management did their job and surrounded him with the players to make a difference. The result is recent history.
I want some of that history. There has been no time since 1970 I can honestly say the Chiefs had a chance to be the best. I want to experience that again. Andrew Luck would give me HOPE. Hope that the organization can surround him with complementary players who could elevate the franchise into an elite program. A program that the media cannot ignore. (heck, Peyton did it in Indy) Hope that his strong leadership skills will elevate others to perform at their highest level.
In conclusion, someone posted Pioli’s track record for drafting low round QB’s. Dudes, he is 1 for 8. Those odds are not good for me. I am not an advocate for tanking the season. But I will have to say that my motto is: IF THEY SUCK I WANT LUCK.
