Chiefs Reportedly Worked Out More Running Backs This Week
RB Jamaal Charles is out for the year so the Kansas City Chiefs are on the look out for running backs. Reports earlier this week had the Chiefs recently working out RB Sammy Morris and former Chiefs FB Mike Cox.
I'd heard that there were actually a few more running backs working out for KC this week and Aaron Wilson of Scout.com has the details.
In addition to Morris and Cox, the Chiefs worked out running backs Jalen Parmele, Dimitri Nance and Chris Jennings.
Parmele was originally drafted in the sixth round by the Miami Dolphins in 2008 and also played for the Baltimore Ravens. He wrote on his Twitter page that he worked out for KC and says he ran a 4.38 second 40-yard dash.
Nance comes from Arizona State and signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 2010. The Chiefs actually had some interest in him prior to that draft. He's also played for the Green Bay Packers.
Jennings spent time in the CFL before catching on with the Cleveland Browns in 2008. He later joined the New York Jets and, in the 2011 NFL preseason, had 81 yards in one game for the Jets.

I don't they will sign a RB right now.
I think for some reason they are satisfied with Battle. I do think Pioli is sniffing around because if somebody else gets injured they will need to add another back immediately.

I dislike Battle
as a player. Another guy that has had way too many chances and never capitalizes on them.
Interesting
Jennings sounds like a bad apple…Jennings allegedly assaulted a doorman on April 17, 2010 at a dance club. The following month, Jennings was not charged with assault as the doorman did not sign the complaint.
Jennings was arrested in Guernsey County, Ohio, on September 5, 2011, for driving 147 MPH, in a 65 MPH zone.
Jalen Parmele sounds great! 5’11 225 4.38 forty 41inch vertical. He killed it at Toledo. He was very good on ST with the Ravens…he even returned kicks.

That settles it
He’s a former Raven. He’s in.
If only we picked em up like Al Davis, he’d have been signed Sunday night cause he’s FAAAAAAAST.
Jones and McClain duo
I am contenct with bring back Cox as a Fb and running a power run game with Jones and McClain forget about speedy backs that fumble the ball and are fragile. give me the old school one, two punch like Okoye and Word :)
That is an interesting thought.
I still think a lot of this is in case of injury, but I would be more than happy to sign one of these guys and cut Battle if they want to have a closer look.

One problem with that idea.
Our OL isn’t built for that style of smash mouth. Way too light for that straight ahead blocking. We are built for speed.
Neither is Jones.
Our OL isn’t built for that style of smash mouth.
It was funny when the idiots on TV said we’re a power running team the other day. Just because a team leads the NFL in rushing doesn’t make them a power running team.
My middle name is Luck, so suck on this, Luck suckers.
Chiefs sinking on purpose?
wondering if anyone feels the same way i do that Chiefs dont really seem to care about improving thier team and are content with what they have win or lose.
from what ive gathered we lost a 2 probowl players in Berry and Charles and TE prospect in Moeaki along with 2 smashing defeats and the Chiefs have managed to do was bring back a few players that they cut prior to the regular season.
I can understand bring players up from the practice squad or resigning cut players cause they know the offense but thinking from fan view they brought in worse players, and further more players that were not even good enough to make the last 53 man cut.
along with no free agent signings or trades to improve the overall team or depth is basically showing me the Chiefs are ok with losses and blowouts, am i totally off base on thinking this way, because as it stands this team on paper has not gotten better, but worse.
LaRon McClain? Steve Breaston? Kelly Gregg?
All an upgrade. It’s no one’s fault (except Stevie Johnson) that our guys got injured.

You make a valid point
Pioli has not done much for our overall team depth.
But there is also not much left out there…he passed on his chance to grab good depth in FA. Probably under the assumption that Berry and Charles would stay healthy. But he really should not have assumed that.
I think we are ok at RB…I wouldn’t mind a different back like Parmele though.
Defense is where we need some good help. Safety I the big one.
But with all that being said I DO NOT think Pioli is sinking the ship. He has no reason to. His job is on the line with this team. We will see as the season progresses.

Right.
Not only that, his legacy is on the line. He doesn’t want all of the accolades he got in NE to disappear with people thinking he couldn’t survive without Bellicheck.
I dont want to mention Andrew Luck, but Pioli must know that his chances are good and this QB could be once and life time opportunity, Chiefs arent shy about not drafting a Franchise / Rookie QB in the last decade or so. In all honestly i dont even know why they drafted Stanzi, it would have served them better to pick up a bunk QB in FA and use the 5th round on defensive player.
I like the additions they made in offseason, FB, Slot WR, #2 WR and NT and Oline but it all just kind of stopped there, there was no depth and the fact the team is 0-2 which i can live with, its being blown out 89-10 what makes the 0-2 look even worse.
Coaching and QB can only do so much its a team game and 11 players have to work and that obviously isnt working with the core players we have now, and adding in players that Chiefs deemed unworthy prior to the regular season doesn’t seem to make any real sense for improving thier team.
Let it go dude.
If not just for a little while…say a day or 2.
Unfortunately it is very difficult to sign players off the street this time of year and have them be very productive.
First, it is difficult th catch up on the playbill , which is more often than not a team signs back players they had cut earlier, or signs them from a team with a similar system (like NE).
Secondly, usually people who are still available right now are available for a reason, they were not good enough to make their team. I actually like signing a younger guy because he may develop usually if a veteran used to be decent and is still on the street his skills are declining.

Exactly
It’s not like there are lots of immensely talented football players sitting out there unemployed.
Can we get off this "Suck4Luck" bullshit? Actually WANTING us to lose? Seriously...WTF???
i can agree on the younger talent. but the Chiefs know what they got with these resignings could it hurt to add some new veterian talent. they mentioned on ESPN radio that Chiefs have no real leaders or vets after the lose of Vrabel and Waters. who is the next oldest player with real leadership? Wiegman for offense and Gregg for defense?
What about Thomas Jones?
Don’t forget Tamba Hali leader by example type…

It may be difficult to sign players off the street
but RB is the easiest position to learn IMO. As for the safety, I think they need to bring in a vet who can recognize what an offense is doing without really knowing the playbook.
Men succeed when they realize that their failures are the preparation for their victories.
That Is The Good Thing About Losing A RB (Insofar As Losing Any Player Could Be Good)
You’re unlikely to find someone with superstar ability, but there’s a decent chance of finding someone who can be at least league-average (e.g. Ryan Grant, Arian Foster, LeGarrette Blount).
They are all good sized backs
Around 5’10 or 11 and around 225lbs a piece.
I would love if they picked up on Derrick Locke…he is badass. But it looks like they are looking at big backs who can take some hits.

it can be said that pioli may not have done enough...
Before the season started…but they are doing their jobs now…that list is probably the only guys at rb they know a lot about…and we did look at te and safety..not much out there in terms of upgrades. Its all on the coaches getting the most out of what we have now…

buy why shy away from Jones and McClain as featured backs. both work horse and handle the ball well with marginal speed. and McClain was a closer smash mouth football.
give me hard nose running at 3 to 4 yards a pop, will have first downs in 3 tries and march down the field and wear out defenses :)
that works when your winning by 2 tds...but if u are behind...you will get destroyed. and teams just load the box all day...
If you can balance your offense you can make big plays when the d doesn’t know what to expect..our problem is poor execution. Unprepared players and injuries. They just haven’t been ready to play.

Jones faded towards he end of last season
and he isn’t getting any younger. We need to add a back that can can take a lot of hits and not wear down. If nothing else, we neeed to find a replacement for Battle and will likely need to replace Jones sooner rather than later. The way our season looks right now, we may very well be drafting a QB in the 1st round next offseason and should start looking for ways to fill those needs at RB right now.
Power running doesn't really fit the Oline
When defenses can just stack the box against the run(like the second Raiders game, the Ravens playoff game, etc) we need a big play threat. Does Jones or McClain offer that? Nope, teams can put 9 in the box, 2 on Bowe and thats the game.

Thats why you throw to Dex on the flat and let him use the sideline as protection from not getting hammered.

Except any team will know that's coming
With 2 power backs pounding the ball, then Dex comes into the backfield no team is going to respect him up the middle and be ready to chase sideline to sideline…

If They're Working Out Mike Cox
I wonder if that means we’ll be seeing Le’Ron McClain getting pushed into the big back role ahead of Thomas Jones. Not that McClain’s very good in that role, but he’s shown himself to be more serviceable than Jones at this point of Jones’ career.
I'd much rather have McClain back there than Battle
I don’t see why Battle is stil on the roster. if any of the RBs they’re working out show promise, I’d dump Battle for a younger back that might have more potential. Any back we sign off the street would be just as eager to contribute on STs as Battle.
by Chiefs4Life on Sep 22, 2011 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions
I think battle is on the roster
because he is the best cheapest back up fullback.
by Bigcherokeechief on Sep 22, 2011 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions
Mike Cox is an even cheaper backup FB
since he’s not on the roster, you don’t have to pay him unless you need him. Yes, I realize having Battle might make it so we can react to an in-game injury at FB, but I haven’t actually seen him play much FB. We could just as easily go to an entirely one-back offense fo the rest of that game and bring in Cox for the next week. Battle is taking up a roster spot while adding little to the team in terms of current production and future potential.

Stop with the running backs already. How about finding a damn wide receiver that wont let the ball bounce off of his hands?

We need...
too bring in a ROCKSTAR receivers coach. Matt has throw 27 interceptions since coming to KC. 16 of those 27 have come off of pass catchers hands. We have also been high on the list the past three years for dropped balls. Matt may not be the most accurate guy BUT when are his receivers going to make a damn play for him? I listen to the radio feed every week. I constantly here Len Dawson talking about our receivers not gaining separation or making plays. This is obviously a need. We may have signed a guy and drafted another BUT it is still a huge need.

Urban DOES stink
Other than Breaston and Bowe (whom I just can’t bring myself to say is “elite”…let the argument commence!) we have no real threats.
Breaston's...
best year, he was third banana behind pro bowl receivers(Fitz and Boldin). They took the heat off of him leaving him wide open!

They need a RB with the great Jackie Battle available?
…how does this guy make the team every year and don’t tell me special teams because they are not that special.
Please just throw a rookie out there
There’s a chance we can find a player if we just give them a shot. No point in throwing TJ or McClain out there at this point. We have nothing to lose with giving a hungry rookie a shot.
That's just dumb.
McClain is in the prime of his career. He’s not some washed up vet.
My middle name is Luck, so suck on this, Luck suckers.
McClain + Battle
= more time for Cassel to run in circles, COMPLETELY confusing the defense! If we could add Benny Hill music, I think we have a pretty long running sitcom. It worked for Married with Children!
