Week Three Match-Up: San Diego Chargers
Welcome to another weekly breakdown! This week we face a division rival in the Chargers. You can see all the Chargers thoughts on Bolts From The Blue. The Chargers start out 1-1 having a tough week this past Sunday against the Patriots.
I'm pretty worried because we seem to always have trouble against the Chargers. We are also down Berry, Charles, and Moeaki. If Cassel doesn't step it up I'm looking at another blowout on the road. I'll take a look at the passing, rushing, special teams, coaching, and the x-factor. I'll try to be unbiased as possible.
Chiefs QB: Matt Cassel
Chargers QB: Philip Rivers
There is no doubt who the better QB by miles is here. The Chargers are ranked 4th in the NFL for passing yards per game. The Chiefs are ranked 32nd in passing yards per game. The only real bright spot for the Chiefs in the passing game is Bowe and even then he will most likely be in double coverage. We aren't sure of the status of Baldwin yet but I'm not sure if it will help. The Chiefs have Flowers but against the Chargers tall WR's I'm not sure if he will stand a chance. The Chargers have given up 438 yards through the air in 2 games--most came from Brady. The Chiefs have given up 523 yards through the air in 2 games.
When The Chiefs Pass: Chargers
When The Chargers Pass: Chargers
Chiefs Running Backs: Jamaal Charles, Thomas Jones, Dexter McCluster
Chargers Running Backs: Ryan Mathews, Mike Tolbert, Jacob Hester
The Chiefs are without their star player Charles. Thomas Jones still has stuff in his tank but he isn't the runner he once was. McCluster with space can be dangerous but he still isn't Charles. Tolbert is extremely hard to take down for anyone. Mathews if healthy is a good young running back. Hester hasn't been used that much this season so far but the Chiefs can't sleep on him. The Chargers are 22nd in rushing yards per game. The Chiefs are 7th in rushing yards per game. The Chargers in 2 games have allowed 253 yards on the ground. The Chiefs in 2 games have allowed 252 yards on the ground.
When The Chiefs Run: Tie
When The Chargers Run: Tie
Chiefs Special Teams: Ryan Succop, Dustin Colquitt, PR/KR Javier Arenas, Dexter McCluster
Chargers Special Teams: Nick Novak, Mike Scifres, PR/KR Richard Goodman
Our punters have the same average punting distance thus far with the same amount of balls in the 20. However, the Chiefs have punted a lot more. Novak comes in to replace an injured Kaeding. Succop seems to have a drop off from last year. Our punt and kickoff returns seem to be close for a push.
Special Teams: Tie
Chiefs Coaches: Todd Haley, Bill Muir, Romeo Crennel
Chargers Coaches: Norv Turner, Clarence Shelmon, Greg Manusky
Norv isn't the best coach in the world but at least his team is prepared. I'm not sure if Clarence calls in the places or Norv does most of the playcalling. Manusky is a pretty good defensive coordinator but Romeo takes that match-up. Until Haley has a good game plan and we execute I'm calling the other teams coaching better.
Coaching: Chargers
The Chargers are most likely going to take that tough lost against the Patriots out on us. They are at home and have good confidence. The Chiefs are on the road for the second straight week with little no momentum. The Chiefs have had some bad injuries thus far but I'm not sure if they can overcome. The Chiefs might be playing hard to prove people wrong but in the end will it be enough?
X - Factor: Chargers
I'll be really shocked if the Chiefs keep the game close this week. I've seen stranger things happen in the NFL so I won't completely give up home. The Chargers have one of the best passing games in the NFL. If We couldn't stop Fitzpatrick or Stafford I doubt we will be able to stop Rivers.
Winner: Chargers

Considering McNabb failed to even put up 40 yards against SD
I think it would be safe to say “all of it came from Brady,” lol.
Good write up! I’m holding out hope, San Diego has looked pretty suspect. I have a feeling what happened against NE was a bit of overachieving, because they were hapless in week 1 against a very rough Minnesota team.

Thanks
Yeah, McNabb just epic failed week one.

Is that the Italian spelling of Chiefs?
Ciao, Ciefs?
you guys in the newsroom
really,… I mean really youre going to try to sugar coat this debacle? Tell me we have a prayer. Other than Divine intervention I see a 2-14 team. I’m not a suck for Luck guy but thats a credible scenario right now
I dont Agree with the running game
They have matthews an up and coming star : pending health issues. And Tolbert whom of which is a beometh of a man. we have aging TJ and small lilltle Dex Mex, McClain is maybe on par to Tolbert. Thier ability out plays our running game. Need more reasoning?: Berry is out; we ( Romeo) will be foucsed on a TE who hasnt gotten athat many catches and he will have a great night. come second half after San Deigos TE and WR blow up the score boards the running game will eat the clock.
MAYBE just MAYBE the holding penalties against Tamba Hali will be called and give us an edge for Justin Houstin to make his next step in the chiefs LB corps.. maybe
"Stay Classy Kansas City"
Chargers have allowed quite a few yards on the ground
and we are still a run first team. We will see.

I'll put it this way.
I would be SHOCKED to see Seattle win its next game. Same with Indy.
I would not be shocked if Kansas won. A little surprised, sure, but SD is playing like a team that’s just waiting to lay one tremendous egg.

Yeah
and I wouldn’t mind if Chargers laid that egg against the Chiefs :P

i'll be shocked if we put up 10 against them
We couldn’t put 10 up against either the Lions or Bills

point spread
anyone curious about what the point spread will be with this game. first week was respectable, second week they either under estimated lions or over estimated the chiefs to bounce back and got 9.5 spread largest lions have had in like a decade. 4 straight games losing by nearly 30 points or more. are we gonna see 25.5 + spread for chargers lol. i have never seen anything more than 15.5 on proline for NFL. any thoughts on what the spread might be?

That was on Monday morning. Most places has the Chargers 13 to 15 point favorites. We will see if that changes with injury reports coming out and what not.

madden 12
anyone here playing madden 12? i traded away matt cassel and got earl thomas from seattle and a 3rd round pick. think we should do that in real life, young fast FS had 6 picks last season and seatle needs a QB :)
Seattle won't ruin its chances at Luck.
Why do you think Pete Carroll loves Tarvaris Jackson so much? He gives the appearance of having an NFL caliber QB with all the performance of a UFL caliber QB! Seattle would be fined by the league for tampering with draft order if they tried starting anyone worse.

good stuff as always, 85 ... though I wonder if there's another X-Factor to consider here?
namely … will the Chiefs be able to adapt to the weather conditions in San Diego?
again, advantage Chargers

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
49-0
If we can only muster 10 total points against the Bills and Lions….then we won’t sniff the end zone in SD. I say Succop misses another FG or two and we continue to self-destruct. I’m not a “Suck for Luck” guy(and I think tanking a season on purpose for a draft pick is a ridiculous thought), but I just don’t see it any other way.
Always a fan, win or lose. Go Chiefs!
i see atleast 51
Rivers is pissed at the last game and those turnovers, he comes out gunning
52-6
Cassel: 12 for 28 for 180 yards, sacked 6 times with 2 INT and a fumble
Dexter: fumbles once
1st QTR 17-0
2nd QTR 10-3
3rd QTR 14-3
4th QTR 10-0
Chiefs tailgates in SD?
My dad, brother, and I are meeting up with a couple of my uncles and going to the game in SD this Sunday. I have already been told to stop by KC Barbeque Saturday night, but I was wondering if there will be any sponsored KC tailgates before the game. I heard there was at least one last year.
wouldn't be surprised ... see if you can get hold of Bajah ... erm, BJ Kissel
