all I am saying is TALENT isn't really the issue, IMHO

current performance is, which In my opinion, is a problem of confidence, coaching, etc

by stagdsp on Sep 20, 2011 1:58 PM CDT up reply actions

agree

they have potential i think . But they’re sure taking their time to reach it . But ur right it very well could be coaches , and getting blown out 2 weeks in a row cant be good for confidence.

by chiefsman! on Sep 20, 2011 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions

We have do have some talent and I think you will see

Pioli lock those players up. However, we have some players that I think we as fans over value cuz we want and/or hoped they were better then they actually are.

The 3 players that come to mind are

1) Albert – We wanted him to be the answer cuz he was a top 15 pick and needed the answer since the drop off after Roaf left. He’s average and will always be average as a LT. Now, put him a LG, a position he played in every game but 2 in college, and he isn’t average…he’s probably a Pro Bowler with his size and quickness.

2) Dorsey – He’s and average 34 DE. He gets dominated on a regualr basis so much so that we really aren’t using our 34 base D. People are talking about coaching. He has the same coach as he did in 2009 and 2010…you know what is different…he’s playing against better competition and it is showing.

3) TJ – He’ll never live up to the #3 pick in the draft. He handles double teams better then any other DE we have, and can hold his own…but he will never make other people around him better.

by AZDiamond75 on Sep 20, 2011 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Notice I said handles

double teams better then any other DE we have. He still gets pushed off the LOS, and doesn’t shed his blocker quck enough.

by AZDiamond75 on Sep 20, 2011 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Shedding his blocker seems to be an issue.

As for push, he has mega-push, but most of the time, he’s not in up-field mode, imo.

by hmills110 on Sep 20, 2011 7:01 PM CDT up reply actions

In 2009 Dorsey didn't have Crennel

And an average LT is fine especially for a LG that made a transition, a lot of teams can’t make that claim and you don’t need an elite LT to get to a SB anyways.

Me and Matt Cassel just - you up, dog!

by ChiefWarPaint on Sep 20, 2011 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions

You are correct about 2009

still Dorsey had the same coach in 2010.

I agree you don’t need an elite LT or OL if you have an elite QB. However, having an elite OL makes all the offensive weapons better. The RB is better as he has bigger running lanes. The QB is better because he has more time and more WRs can be sent out into patterns. The WRs are better because they have more time to get open.

I’m a big fan of putting people in positions where they can be successful. If Albert can be an elite LG, why put him at T where he is average? Our interior line would get much more of a push with Albert then Lilija. Short yardage would probably be easier to make and our undersized C would get some needed help.

by AZDiamond75 on Sep 20, 2011 2:48 PM CDT up reply actions

You don't even need an elite QB

Just one that can be calm and can actually keep his eyes downfield and find somebody open.

But I agree, utilization of talent must become better if we’ll ever get over the hump.

Me and Matt Cassel just - you up, dog!

by ChiefWarPaint on Sep 20, 2011 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions

In today's league, you need guys who get open quickly, else defenses can dial up the pressures at will.

Colbert and maybe Breaston might be the best at getting open quickly. But both of ’em are better in the slot, with trees on the outside, imo.

It's a lack of confidence alright..

but more the players lack of confidence in the QB than anything else. There may be some side -effect confidence loss in the staffs ability to gameplan around the QB’s ineffectiveness. (for this they should have kept Gailey, he’s a genius working with scrap heap type players)

by Chiefsfansince85 on Sep 20, 2011 4:32 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not so sure about that

but, the QB and coach are the easy scapegoats, so I’m not surprised that people are calling for both of their heads

by stagdsp on Sep 20, 2011 4:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Look at Indy

That team has talent, albeit somewhat aged. The only thing that changed for them was they went from a QB that gave them confidence they were never out of a game, to a QB that none of them wanted or believe in. I see a parallel to what we have happening. No confidence in Matt to move the ball, and no confidence that his ineptitude will be hidden by scheme.

by Chiefsfansince85 on Sep 20, 2011 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't want to argue

and I certainly don’t want to compare Cassel to Manning, that’s just unfair :)

I think the confidence problems are due to:

  • a lack of preparation (bad offseason program)
  • devastating injuries to arguably the 3 best players on the team not named Hali
  • the alarming and untimely turnovers and penalties

2 of those 3 are directly related to coaching, NOT the players on the field
the other is just bad luck

by stagdsp on Sep 20, 2011 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions

That sounds like

more of a comparison to Collins than Manning that Chiefsfan is saying

Men succeed when they realize that their failures are the preparation for their victories.

by KingChief on Sep 20, 2011 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah it was more of a situational comparison of on the field

confidence levels than it was to ability. Manning (as much as I loathe the egghead) is really only comparable to probably Brady, Rodgers, Brees, and maybe Phyllis Rivers.

I do buy lack of preparation for the Bills game meltdown, but cmon two games in a row ? I dont’ think you can chalk all of that up to poor prep. Well I guess if they just sat around during the offseason and sang campfire songs while all the rest of the teams actually worked on football.. could be possible. Haley is unconventional, I wonder if we should ask the guys what his favorite song was…

by Chiefsfansince85 on Sep 20, 2011 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Cassel to Manning is not a comparison.

It is a Contrast. MAnning has the ability to motivate, command, demand and produce results. Face it, Cassel is a good , solid average QB. A great #2 to play behind someone like Brady, Manning, Rogers, etc. If team surrounded him with elite tools and weapons he is capable of producing wins. By himself,,,, not so much.

I hope they'd be at least

willing to make some changes in game (give another QB a couple of series) if things turn ugly. At least switch it up a little this time around.

Maybe even the ole Bears 46?

Trying to think of a way to eliminate or mitigate the SS from the D. Surely we can figure something out. hehehe

a career journeyman/perennial roster castoff is “wowing” us more than our #1 picks up front.

They mostly were swapping him in for #92/#97.

Mostly in nickel. Which means he’s pinning his ears back, more. What’s nice, though, is he’s tougher to run past than Gilberry, Bailey, or TJAX appear to be.

by hmills110 on Sep 20, 2011 7:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Our DL isn't that bad

They stop the run well enough, wish they could get to the QB better but they could be a lot worse.

Me and Matt Cassel just - you up, dog!

by ChiefWarPaint on Sep 20, 2011 2:39 PM CDT up reply actions

They stop the run well enough?

We had the worst run D the last half of 2010. We are 25th out of 32 in rushing yards per game. Teams that want to run against us, do so at will.

by AZDiamond75 on Sep 20, 2011 2:54 PM CDT up reply actions

You do realize that a Run D is more then just the line right?

A better indicator for line play is how much teams averaged, and they only average 3.7 yards a carry which was good enough for 12th in the league.

Me and Matt Cassel just - you up, dog!

by ChiefWarPaint on Sep 20, 2011 5:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah Run D is on the front 7

but it all starts with the DL. I saw the 3.7 yards/att., and a stat that might bring that yard/att. down is short yardage rushing situations where we are 28th in the NFL in first given up on rushes. You could give me a stat, I could give you one. Bottom line, if a team needs yards against us can they get it…yeah…pretty easily. This conversation between you and I was kind of my point of an earlier post. Our DL is over valued…we are average to below average.

by AZDiamond75 on Sep 20, 2011 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly and average to below average isn't awful

And that’s my whole point.

Me and Matt Cassel just - you up, dog!

by ChiefWarPaint on Sep 20, 2011 6:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Then it's

a perspective thing…to me average to below average is awful and unacceptable. I will always say there is nothing more demoralizing then when a team runs the ball down your throat….and there is nothing that can get a team energized like a elite front 7 with a dominant DL. If you don’t believe that then you never watched

It's those draws against the nickel front (Gilberry and Bailey) that are pretty devastating.

We’ve been in nickel and dime most of these first two games, with Dorsey, Jackson, and Gregg on the bench. Very frustrating for me.

I was always more nervous about Jamaal.

McCluster’s quicker and more compact. Harder to stand him up and break him like a wishbone. Kind of like Marcus Allen in terms of body control in tight spots.

The only thing different is no JC

They need to go ahead and start playing Powe instead of having him inactive and if Cassel is still doing the same crap at halftime he needs to head to the bench and Palko needs to play since Haley won’t activate Stanzi

my thoughts

the “big changes” that are needed are NOT depth-chart related…

they need to change how they prepare and practice, how they handle adversity, and they need to find some confidence

Yes, and the depth chart bears little relation to actual position groupings we see in a game.

They show the starting lineup headshots at the start of the 1st series on defense, and WHOOPS! the Chiefs already have the whole d-line swapped-out. About the only thing you can count on is Carr and Flowers.

Arenas Should Start @ FS

I would start Arenas @ FS and move K Lewis to SS, and would bring Jon McGraw in during Nickel down. Although Jon brings leaderishp to the unit while he’s on the field, he’s just to slow to cover the WR in the slot and the TE. Arenas did play some safety during his years @ Alabama. Arenas has the speed to run with the WR in the slot.
This week, we face Rivers and Gates, and I don’t think we match up will with SD WR & TE, plus Tolbert is catching the ball coming out of the backfield. Tolbert caught 8 passes for 73yrd against NE last Sunday. We need to find away to get pressure on Rivers up the middle, while covering Tolbert and Hester coming out of the backfield.

We Need TE and DL

I’m sorry but Leonard Pope and Anthony Becht doesn’t put fear into other team defense. I mention last year we should pick up Colin Pete TE from Alabama. Pete is a four tool TE. Remember he blocked for Ingram when won the Hesiman Trophy. He made several big catch during Alabama National Championship. Pete lack the speed, but who care as long as he can block and make catch to move the chain is the key. Pete is way better than Pope and Becht. I know Pete isn’t playing football right, but just give a chance.
If not Colin Pete, what about Preston Dial another Alabama Crimson Tide who was Pete backup. What do we have to loss !!!
