How to stop getting blown out and look like a real NFL team.....

So first up, the obvious. Secure the football! After such a successful campaign last year showed that our Chiefs know not only the importance of this but also how to actually do it, it is time for this coaching staff to make this the number one focus going forward! I was really looking forward to the growth of the defense this year and even with the loss of Berry, I believe this defense will grow and improve if the offense would stop putting them in bad spots so often. We all know how hard it is to win in this league when you give your opponent extra opportunies and this team in particular simply can't do it and expect to win.

Secondly. It may not be flashy or even very exciting to watch but the Chiefs need to rush the ball at least 40 times a game going forward. The loss of Charles and his big play potential is devastating but running back is the one postion on this team with actual depth and they have got to take advantage of it! With the exception of Bowe(sometimes) this team is devoid of big play talent at receiver but Bowe, Breaston, Urban and Baldwin when he returns, are big guys who have shown the capacity to be good downfield blockers. With Pope and Behct at TE, this team needs to line up in a two back set most of the time with two wide and one tight and pound the ball! If I were designing a game plan for this week or any really, it would be very heavily concentrated on useing McClain as either a lead blocker or primary carrier on 80% of our offensive plays. The result of this kind of approach will wear at defenses, set up the play action pass, which seems to help Matt as when he comes out of the fake he pops up and throws at his first target, eleminating the need for him to go through many progressions, which as we have all seen, he is frankly terrible at.

And finally speaking of the passing game, or lack there of....we know our QB doesn't have a cannon and isn't very accurate beyond 20 yards so quit forcing it. Lean on the run game and give him a ton of screens to McCluster, the occasional 10 to 15 yard slant and keep it simple. Now. Are we gonna win a ton of games this way? Probably not. But with some of the high powered offenses we have coming up on the schedule this year, the priority should be playing keep away and protecting our defense from defending the short field. Hold onto the ball, run the ball, play for field position with our special teams and grind it out. Running the ball like that shortens the game and keeps the other guys gunslinger on the bench. It may feel like a return to Martyball around here for a while but at least for me it is preferable to watching this team getting blown off the field week after week.

To sum up...with the awful injury situation, the shaky play at QB and receiver and the tough schedule, I say survival mode for this season is the best play. Worry about trying to keep up with the high flying, pass heavy direction of the league next year when our injured players return, free agency and the draft have hopefully brought some more talent to the team and we possibly have a new QB. Just my two cents. Happy to hear from anyone who agrees or not.
