Chiefs Working Out A Familiar Name

The Kansas City Chiefs have an open roster spot with the season-ending injury to RB Jamaal Charles, which means they're going to be signing someone, possibly as soon as today.

The Chiefs reportedly worked out defensive lineman Gerard Warren last week so he's a name to remember but they also reportedly plan to work out a familiar name -- FB Mike CoxThis according to The Patriot-News

Cox went to Georgia Tech, where he was coached by Chan Gailey, and signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Chiefs in 2008. He was on the roster until NFL roster cuts earlier this year appearing in 39 games over the last three years.

The conspiracy theorist in me says bringing Cox back could mean more running back time for FB Le'Ron McClain, who was signed in the offseason. With Charles' injury, the Chiefs could use another running back and McClain had some success in Baltimore during his one season as a feature back.

We'll see what the Chiefs decide to do with this open roster spot.

McClain will get more RB carries

Cox will be a full-time FB. Cox blocking for McClain on a 4th and 1. Hope they convert those.

Agreed.

There are a couple guys out there with different skill sets that may be useful, but this is definitely a Chiefs kinda move.

Possibly

Depends on if they plan on featuring McClain a good bit with Charles out. Need someone to lead block for him.

I’m still for letting Dex take over Charles’ carries with Jones and McClain sharing kind of a secondary role behind him. Assuming we can get Dex to stop fumbling. May be a lot to assume though.

Mike Cox?!

I would sign Sharper or Warren…but that is me.

I'd definitely be down for giving Sharper a look.

But if he’s still not signed at this point, you have to wonder if he’s failing physicals or has some other kind of issue. He was too good pretty recently for people to just not be interested.

Maybe just maybe he hasn't signed with any of the 32 teams in the league yet

And he said he wanted to stay in New Orleans as recently as July and they cut him loose.

Look beyond just our team for a second. Nobody has signed the guy yet and he was great a few seasons ago. Plus he had microfracture sugery and missed a big chunk of last season.

So maybe just maybe he isn’t physically cutting it. By any team’s standards right now.

So unless its a team he wants to play for, I doubt he is coming.

by Bigcherokeechief on Sep 20, 2011 9:35 AM CDT up reply actions

Gave him a look, yup.

Haven’t signed him.

Which just supports my point. He’s 36, had microfracture surgery and nobody’s signed him yet, well past the time when salaries would be guaranteed for the year.

I hate to say this about the guy, especially since I defended him so much,

but I don’t see how we win when Cassel can’t get us first downs on third and whatever. If he doesn’t improve and fast he’s the biggest liability on the team.

Cassel still looks uncomfortable and awkward in the regular pro set offense taking a 5 step drop

At this point, why not go shotgun and see what we can do?

Give him a better chance to see the field and a bit more time as well. Can still keep in two backs and 2 WR if they want to go that route, just less moving parts for our QB.

by TRSChief on Sep 20, 2011 9:23 AM CDT up reply actions

I've seen the Packers, Saints, and Chargers all go shotgun as much if not more than they go under center lately.

I wonder if the NFL is moving to a spread offense? Makes sense to me. Worked for Thiggy, kind of.

I'm a fan of the pro style E-P offense.

But you have to have the personnel to do it. Apparently we don’t right now.

So adapt and overcome. The times Cassel has looked his best was in shotgun and hurry up situations where he just sort of developed a rhythm. E-P style is more calculated and methodical by its very nature and I just don’t think he’s ever really going to fit that scheme.

The Chiefs and I have mutually agreed on this decision and although I look forward to continuing my career, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Kansas City.

That's what was great about Chan

He switched things up and was able to play to peoples strengths depending on who was on the field.

I wonder if the receivers are running them incorrectly. I remember Haley talking about Bobby Wade I think it was, at a press conference or something, for not running the route past the marker. It seems like the wideouts were consistently doing that Sunday.

Maybe the roster moves the Chiefs have to make now, coupled with the fact that Cassel hasn’t been able to convert third downs, leading to me thinking we need a change there, or something.

I’m trying to recollect any rookie for any team ever that looked as bad as Cassel has looked the last four regular season games. Nothing coming to mind. I’ve been a Cassel apologist for up to after the first game of this season. No upside to the guy. Hoped there was. There isn’t. Stanzi at least would have the excuse of being a rookie. He might actually have upside.

It’s not like he’s got perennial back problems or a banged up knee or something that’s going to always nag and potentially ruin a career.
