Latest Chiefs Depth Chart With NFL Roster Cuts Coming

Earlier this week, the Kansas City Chiefs had 89 players on the roster but had to cut down to 80 players on Tuesday. Aug. 30. They're at 80 players now and, by Saturday afternoon, they'll need to get down to 53 players.

That's a whopping 27 players that will be waived, released, traded or put on IR by 5:00 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) on Saturday afternoon.

We can guess on quite a few of those guys already. The Chiefs signed double-digit undrafted free agents this year and, more than likely, just a couple of them will make the roster. There are also a few veterans that will get released whether it be because they're not worth the money or their backup is simply better.

The Chiefs can create an eight-man practice squad as well but to place players on the practice squad you first have to release them, expose them to the waiver wire system and hope they don't get picked up by another team, and then re-sign them to the practice squad. Even then, those players are available to be signed by other teams so practice squad guys are really never safe.

It's going to be an interesting 36 hours here. If you've watched HBO's Hard Knocks before, you know this is an incredibly nerve-wracking time for more than half the roster.

I've posted the latest depth chart after the jump. What cuts are we going to see tomorrow afternoon?

The OL

almost makes me sick every time I look at who we have, and what our depth looks like.

by Hey Tex on Sep 2, 2011 10:07 AM CDT reply actions

I hate to say it

but I’m right there with you on this one. B.Rich should be cut.

by jcru on Sep 2, 2011 10:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Why cut B-Rich if you have no one to replace him with?

I know he’s struggled big time but he was average/below average last year which is better than the guys behind Gaither.

by Joel Thorman on Sep 2, 2011 10:12 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

I know

he should be could, in an ideal world, but there is no option B. I do think he lost his starting job though, to Gaither, and now maybe they’ll take getting another Tackle and Center a priority from this point on.

by jcru on Sep 2, 2011 10:14 AM CDT up reply actions

exactly

he’s struggled without TE help this preseason… but WORST case scenario, they will keep a TE in to help him more during the regular season, and he’ll be AT LEAST as good as he was last year… leading the league in rushing, and allowing less sacks than much of the rest of the league

by stagdsp on Sep 2, 2011 10:17 AM CDT up reply actions

Hopefully

We can find someone after cuts. Should be someone that is an upgrade out there

by KCNorm on Sep 2, 2011 10:40 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I would think so as well

but I think there are a lot of teams out there that are looking for good tackles and there just aren’t enough to go around. I don’t remember if there were any viable FAs available during that brief FA period, it was so crazy.

Just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys.

by KCnDC on Sep 2, 2011 11:22 AM CDT up reply actions

IMO he was left on island for many plays in pre-season.

He will see much more help in regular season. IMO that is reason to sign monster TE like Becht and draft and sign FA FBs. They know our OTs need help in our scheme. I just wish our OTs were better at pass protection. It hurts veratility to have so much manpower directed away from being targets. Means our WRs will see a lot of double teams and limit us to lots of underneath stuff again.

..and

I might add, he’s an excellent run blocker

by Chief_Elmo on Sep 2, 2011 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Waters was better, C.Wiegmann is literally on his last legs

Ryan Lilja has been out.

Would have liked to see more upgrades on the line, the draft and free agency really didn’t show this was a priority.

by jcru on Sep 2, 2011 10:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Asamoah could easily be better than Waters this year

Hudson was a great pick, and will really payoff down the road
Gaither is looking promising as well

once Lilja is healthy, I think the Line will be just fine…

by stagdsp on Sep 2, 2011 10:16 AM CDT up reply actions

You definitely see the glass as half full

could be, still waiting to see the hype on Asamoah. Gaither needs to stay healthy, same with Lilja. Lilja just represents staying on par with last year, not really an upgrade.

I really hope you are right, and not my view.

by jcru on Sep 2, 2011 10:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Somebody will pick him up in a week or two

when they don’t have to fully guarantee his contract.

He looked pretty dang good to me. I think his biggest issue is ultra fast OLBs… but he should be good against DE’s. He is an upgrade over Richardson.

You mean he has now given up a sack as the LT and 1 sack as the RT

In less than a full game’s worth of playing time. If Albert did that, give up 2 sacks in less than a full game, some “fans” would demand he be cut, moved to his “natural position”, tarred and feathered.

by dablueguy on Sep 2, 2011 10:25 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm waiting for a sign from the Chiefs

That they will consider starting, what is clearly the most talented OL: Albert, Lilja, Weigmann, Asamoah, Gaither.

B-Rich has regressed, that’s no bueno.

by kcsno56 on Sep 2, 2011 10:45 AM CDT up reply actions

Convinced that Albert’s the better option at LT?

Albert isn't moving now.

There is almost no chance.

It would take an offseason to move him to RT. He could do it, but they aren’t going to make the switch in one week.

by kcsno56 on Sep 2, 2011 10:47 AM CDT up reply actions

At this point, I'd agree.

Especially now that Gaither seems to finally be getting real reps at right tackle. That being said, if Gaither plays really well and stays healthy I wouldn’t be shocked if they swapped him with Albert next year.

"[Jamaal Charles] probably fights crime in his spare time while inhaling carbon emissions, exhaling oxygen, and crapping oil. That’s how awesome he is. Not just good for the Chiefs, but America."

by MtHammer on Sep 2, 2011 11:29 AM CDT up reply actions

LT and RT are basically the same position

All the plays COULD be run to the other side, and the LT SHOULD know what he would be doing if the play call were flipped.

I don’t get why people act like moving to RT would be so hard for Albert.

The only difference is that if he’s on the right side, the QB can see if he misses his block in pass protection. Hence putting the better tackle on the left.

by graviton on Sep 2, 2011 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I don’t get why people act like moving to RT would be so hard for Albert.

by MNchiefsfan on Sep 2, 2011 8:58 PM CDT up reply actions

This is completely incorrect

I am not saying Albert can’t play RT, he certainly can, but there is a huge footwork difference.

It’s something he could learn, but not in one week.

by kcsno56 on Sep 3, 2011 1:03 AM CDT up reply actions

I really don't know if he has really regressed.

I think they are just not giving him help every pass play like in the season last year. He has always been a terrible pass protector.

by HIV 2 Elway on Sep 2, 2011 10:22 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't agree

When you look at what his position #5/6 WR (depending on classification of other players) is actually giving you, he is the best at what he is asked to do.

The position is going to play no more than 4 or 5 plays on offense, and will be out special teams packages.

There is more value to the spot on ST’s than in the regular offense, barring an injury. Copper is simply the superior ST’s player.

Ideally, this conversation wouldn’t be happening, b/c we would’ve brought in someone like Steve Smith as a legit option at WR and pushed everyone else down a spot.

by kcsno56 on Sep 2, 2011 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Copper is a better ST player

And neither guy would see hardly any action at WR barring an injury.

ST’s outweighs WR production at that position.

by kcsno56 on Sep 2, 2011 10:33 AM CDT up reply actions

I have to disagree.

Tucker was all over ST’s last season. The potential and good ST play will push Tucker over Copper.

Just not quite in Copper’s class.

Maybe this year but you also have to look at the long run

We’ve seen what Copper’s upside is at WR, nothing. Tucker is still young and has promise

That's been his problem his whole career.

Didn’t we have the vid with Haley talling Jamal, that’s my football, you better protect it if you want to play, since the first week of the first Todd Haley camp? Camp #3 just ended.

Say what you want, but you can be as talented as they come, but if you turn over the ball, someone like Parcells (and Haley, aka mini-Parcells) won’t play you, they don’t care what your name is. A.P. couldn’t play on a Parcells/Haley team, they would be too scared of a turnover.

This will cost J.C. a lot of cash in the long run.

by jcru on Sep 2, 2011 10:23 AM CDT up reply actions

The threat of the fumble

is keeping Thomas Jones employed. People literally scream in agony during games “why are they giving TJ the ball here??” And the reason is simple, because he isn’t going to fumble the ball. People think TJ is the change up back, but in Haley’s mind it’s JC that is the change up. And all the moaning and crying and carrying on on game day, proves it.

by jcru on Sep 2, 2011 10:33 AM CDT up reply actions

He did indeed.

Jones had 3 fumbles last season. Charles had 2.

I am a little concerned about Stanzi not playing last night.

I sure hope the wanted to see as much of Palko as possible so they could see they need to cut him, and not that they did not want anymore tape of Stanzi because Pioli is going to try and hide him on the practice squad. I don’t think he would clear waivers.

by saskwatch on Sep 2, 2011 10:28 AM CDT reply actions

Stanzi is the #3

That wasn’t going to change last night.

They needed to decide if Palko can be the #2 or if he needs to be replaced.

OR, if you think he’s already on the team, they needed to get him ready as the #2. When you carry 3 QB’s, you don’t worry much about getting the #3 ready, especially when he’s a developmental guy.

by kcsno56 on Sep 2, 2011 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions

First 15 cuts:

Harr, Ingersol, B. Greenwood, Patterson, Gantt, Horne, Markhausen, Gordon, Ayodele, Kamara, Cole, Demond Washington, Piscitelli, Price, Walters.

I’d be very surprised if more than 1 guy in this group makes the 53. I’d surprised if more than 2 make the PS. After these, the choices get tougher. And then there are everyone else’s cuts. I can see us picking up three guys out of waivers at least, heavily leaning towards OL and QB here.

by kcsno56 on Sep 2, 2011 10:38 AM CDT up reply actions

Well the issue is that unlike in preseason

We won’t have mass substitutions of garbage. The good players and vets will make up for the drop off that occurs when one piece needs to be replaced for a short while. The lack of depth on here is way overblown. Guys are backups for a reason, it’s because they aren’t good enough to be starting

Completely. I’m not saying it’s panic time, but we do have inferior depth to, at the very least, the other teams we played this pre-season.

I think they do get cut and then we sign a FA or two. They put two on the PS. If Moeaki is hurt then they keep Pope. I don’t think he makes it if Moeaki is fine. With the full backs blocking two RB sets they will rotate the TE and only have two active at the game. Pope doesn’t show the fire to make it.

Well there are a lot of players

it gets confusing I think… that’s why I am not gonig to make a cut list.

its funny

How my argument all preseason was how bad were playing and how its going to carry over to the regular season. Why isn’t everyone saying ohh its just preseason don’t worry, now look at everyone, now were worried, well don’t be shocked when we get thumped by buffalo.

by KCman66 on Sep 2, 2011 10:44 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

Agreed, but if they lose to Buffalo it is going to get wild around here.

The views expressed by craig in calgary do not necessarily represent the views of all Canadians.

If we lose to Buffalo

We’re looking at a 5 win season…so it’ll mostly just be depressing around here.

by kcsno56 on Sep 2, 2011 10:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Sure

It’s clearly the easiest game on a brutal schedule, we lose it, and we may be lucky to get to 5 wins.

It’s not that it’s impossible to win 10 games after losing to Buffalo, it’s just highly unlikely.

If we were opening up @ NE a loss wouldn’t mean near as much.

by kcsno56 on Sep 2, 2011 11:18 AM CDT up reply actions

I see the Chiefs losing the first game...

Then getting their act together, and start to play like a competent/good team. So I don’t think a ten win season after a Buffalo loss is that unlikely.

by kcgiant06 on Sep 2, 2011 11:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Why isn’t everyone saying ohh its just preseason don’t worry

Because that’s not what this thread is about? For the record, I still don’t put any stock in preseason wins/losses, and I doubt I ever will.

Anyway, can I officially put you down for, “Chiefs get thumped by Buffalo in week 1?”

too bad

Week 1 I bet they all start… Now that will change, but not week 1 IMO

i honestly think Breaston should start

Until Baldwin comes back and then Dex stays at slot. It would still be a huge upgrade from last year especially considering how most of us wanted Breaston as the number 2 before we drafted Baldwin

by JC25FoMVP on Sep 2, 2011 11:00 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I guess Breaston could start

I just don’t think he will IMO. I think Haley rewards people have been there and even though he is a Breaston guy, Breaston is still new… I could be wrong.

Breaston pre season

I think

They will Cut Battle

And use 7 wr + Dex until baldwin is ready to be on the field. They will use that time to see what Colbert can do, and weather they want to keep him or Cooper.

by Bigcherokeechief on Sep 2, 2011 11:16 AM CDT up reply actions

I like Belcher on early downs.

The only thing he really struggles with is pass coverage in the middle of the field. He’s great against the run and well above average in pass rushing.

How many DL would they usually keep?

I know it has been asked before but I don’t remember and I would like to see Bair make the 53.

This is one thing I hate

There are going to be a lot of people cut and then other teams will pick up the guys that were cut. The typical response is, well why do you want him he was cut so clearly he is awful.

I hate that response. There can be many reasons behind why the guy was cut, none that connects to how they will preform on a new team. Let it play out if we get some guys that were cut from another team w/o saying “well something must be wrong b/c he was cut”

lance briggs wants a trade

I would give a 2nd round pick up to have a top 10 linebacker core

I don't know.

I’m not one of those who feels that linebacker is a huge need, but I guess I wouldn’t get terribly upset if Pioli made that trade.

Oh, I'd be absolutely shocked if we made the trade.

I’m just saying I trust Pioli enough that, if he made it, I wouldn’t condemn it as a terrible move.

Quick edit

I wrote the cut down time was 3:00 CT but it’s actually 5:00 CT. That’s my bad.

by Joel Thorman on Sep 2, 2011 11:15 AM CDT reply actions

I hate Richardson too

But I don’t think he will be cut. We just don’t have any depth at that position. Remember a couple of years ago when they kept Damion MacIntosh up until the final cut? Then we had to scramble and give a draft pick away to the Dolphins for Ndukwe and Callahan?

That right side was terrible all season. This situation isn’t all that different. Gaither may beat him out, but they don’t want to start the season like that again. That right side was a revolving door for the first half of the season. I hated nobody on this team more than Damien MacIntosh this past decade, but I even missed him. We were awful on the right side all year. I say we keep him around a bit longer and see if Gaither gets his job, and look for and develop more depth through free agency and the draft.

by BA on Sep 2, 2011 11:15 AM CDT reply actions

I think even if they keep Richardson

We have a problem, keeping all tackles healthy.

by Bigcherokeechief on Sep 2, 2011 11:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Richardson is probably a top 5 backup tackle in the league.

He’s too valuable to let go. He’s a borderline starting quality player who is extremely good in run blocking who can play both sides of the line. Guys like that aren’t a dime a dozen.

The trade was actually for Ndukwe and Andy Alleman

O’Callaghan was a FA signing after being cut by the Patriots, but I see your point.

The year I worked at Arrowhead for my first job ever, the Chiefs were 8-0 at home. I think that the Kansas City Chiefs should pay me to go to the games so they always win

by hazychance on Sep 2, 2011 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions

It sucks because

The 26th and 27th players you cut are probably guys that could contribute.

Good thing is that some teams cuts will be better then who we currently have…so Pioli needs to be on his toes and swoop in like an owl at night.

"Nobody scares us," Dion Gales said. "Where I’m from, it ain’t how big or small a man is, it’s the size of the fight in them.

I think they took the wrong approach with Barry Richardson and Andy Studebaker.

We had three questionable starters on this team headed into the offseason in Studebaker, Belcher and Richardson. All three are young, all three are developing players and all three are at the point where their development curve is either going to go up or flatline.

I loved the move that they made to bring in Siler to compete with Belcher even though it didn’t work out perfectly because of the unexpected injury. The key was the thought process behind it. Bring in a guy who’s on par(or nearly on par) with the guy that’s a questionable starter and let the competition help with both players development and in turn improve the starter and depth at that position. But for some reason they didn’t do that with BRich or Studebaker. Both Stude and Richardson were basically handed the starting job and you can tell and not in a good way.

There’s no specific RT competition behind Richardson although if Gaither works out he could be slotted there(played alot of snaps there last night but clearly struggled with the footwork reversal). Richardson’s play this year has dropped off and I think it’s because of the lack of competition.

Studebaker is an awful early down SOLB. I know alot of people around here like him and he’s easy to cheer for because he’s a good character/high effort guy but he’s terrible in any running situation. Even worse is the additional playing time seems to be negatively affeting what he was actually good at before which was third down passing situations. This is where Haley’s attitude about veterans and Crennels attitude about wanting guys who do things right is going to cost us. Being high effort and doing everything technically right is great but it doesn’t necesarily make for good results. There’s two younger guys on the roster who are clearly already better then him but they won’t get the opportunity to show it. The only thing saving that side of the field from being a big gaping hole for oppsing teams running games is the best open field tackling CB in the game and the best young SS in the game.

I’m hoping the staff at least brings in a veteran player to compete at SOLB to take some snaps away from Andy and split time with him or we need to unleash Sheffield and Houston and let them learn on the fly like we’ve done with other players.

What’s even more concerning about the SOLB situation is the development of the guy in front of that spot. TJax was starting to come on but having a weakness at SOLB is forcing him to compensate and go outside of his duties to make up for that weakness. That’s affecting his play and his consistency which we can’t afford because we need all three guys on that dline to be effective to have any chance at a good defense this year.

our new RT is gaither not B rich

Mims makes the roster, not a practice squad player he will get snagged other wise by some team

i think everyone is mistaken

remember last yr?? we had one of the best olines in the league!! look at the stats: cassel was sacked like 14 times, and we had the best running game in the league. that doesnt happen with a bad oline, no even with an average oline. we had an above average line and this yr we’re going to be even better. with the addition of asamoah replacin waters, and the eventual addition of gaithers in the lineup, being in lt or rt. its gonna be an elite oline!! so stop complaining, and believe in our coaches and gm. i believe the chiefs could win between 9-11 games, and that should be enough to get in the playoffs. we’ll see
